Mitoch.ndrial DNA（mt DNA） variation h.s been implicated in many common complex diseases, but inconsistent and contradicting results are common. h.re we introduce a novel mutational load h.poth.sis, wh.ch.also considers th. collective effect of mainly rare variants, utilising th. Mut Pred *** apply th.s new meth.dology to investigate th. possible role of mt DNA in two cardiovascular disease（CVD） ph.notypes（h.pertension and h.perglycaemia）, with.n a two-population coh.rt（n = 363; mean age 45 ± 9 yrs）. Very few studies h.ve looked at African mt DNA variation in th. context of complex disease, and none using complete sequence data in a well-ph.notyped coh.rt. As such. our study will also extend our knowledge of African mt DNA variation, with.complete sequences of South.rn Africans being especially under-represented. Th. coh.rt sh.wed prevalence rates for h.pertension（58.6%） and prediabetes（44.8%）. We could not identify a statistically significant role for mt DNA variation in association with.h.pertension or h.perglycaemia in our coh.rt. h.wever, we are of th. opinion th.t th. meth.d described will find wide application in th. field, being especially useful for coh.rts from multiple locations or with.a variety of mt DNA lineages, wh.re th. traditional h.plogroup association meth.d h.s been particularly likely to generate spurious results in th. context of association with.common complex disease.

Unbalanced biotransformation metabolism and oxidative stress status: implications for deficient fatty acid oxidation

Th. concept of accumulating xenobiotics with.n th. h.man body as a h.alth.risk is well known. h.wever, th.se compounds can also be endo-genous, as in th. case of inborn errors of me-tabolism, and lead to some of th. same symp-toms as seen in xenobiotic intoxication. Bio-transformation of both.exogenous and endo-genous toxic compounds is an important function of th. liver, and th. critical balance between th.se systems is of fundamental importance for cellular h.alth. We propose a novel model, to describe th. critical balance between Ph.se I and Ph.se II biotransformation and h.w a disturbance in th.s balance will increase th. oxidative stress status, with.resulting path.logical consequences. We furth.r used deficient fatty acid oxidation to verify th. proposed model, as deficient fatty acid oxidation is associated with.th. accumulation of ch.racteristic metabolites. Th.se accumulating metabolites undergo both.Ph.se I and Ph.se II biotransformation reactions, with.resulting depletion of biotransformation substrates and co-factors. Depletion of th.se important biomolecules is capable of disturbing th. balance between Ph.se I and Ph.se II reactions, and disturbance of th.s balance will increase oxidative stress status. Th. value of th. proposed model is illustrated by its application to a clinical case investigated in our laboratory. In th.s case th. possibility of deficient fatty acid oxidation only became evident once th. critical balance between Ph.se I and Ph.se II biotransformation was restored with.oral replenish.ent of biotransformation substrates. In addition to bio-ch.mical improvement, th.re was also significant clinical improvement. Th. significance of th.s model lies with.n th. treatment possibilities, as th. assessment of biotransformation metabolism and oxidative stress status can lead to th. development of nutritional treatment strategies to correct imbalances. Th.s in turn may reduce th. ch.nces of, or delay th. onset of certain disease states.

Rangeland Degradation Impacts on Vegetation Cover, Soil Properties and Ecosystem Functioning in an Arid and Semi-Arid Climate, South.Africa

Th. negative effect of soil erosion and soil compaction is well documented for th. purpose of optimum rangeland functioning, wh.le th. impact of rangeland degradation on effective soil depth.is seldom quantified. Th. aim of th.s study was to quantify th. response of vegetation cover and soil properties, particularly effective soil depth.and soil texture to rangeland degradation. Forty-one farms were sampled in th. arid and semi-arid climate of South.Africa. With.n th.se farms, data was collected over a vegetation degradation gradient. Results sh.wed a significant decline in relative basal cover (94% ± 15% to 39% ± 17%) and soil depth.(90% ± 14% to 73% ± 24%) as rangeland degraded. Soil texture ch.nges over th. degradation gradients vary for different h.mogeneous vegetation types. Indications regarding th. loss of a functioning rangeland ecosystem were also demonstrated, using objective long-term relations between rangeland conditions and grazing capacity. Th. study h.gh.igh.s th. importance of sustainable rangeland management practices to reduce th. loss in effective soil depth.and to ensure th. sustainable utilization of th. rangeland ecosystem. Th.se results can probably extrapolate to oth.r arid and semi-arid rangelands worldwide.

目的探讨婴儿期虐待与反社会人格障碍的关系。方法采用长程纵向研究方法，从婴儿期入组76例样本，到成年早期有效样本56例。婴儿期虐待信息通过官方儿童保护机构的客观记录获得，家访1h.确认。成年早期用DSM—IV半定式临床诊断访谈工具评估反社会人格障碍、物质滥用、和抑郁障碍。多重填补和分层回归分析纵向数据。结果33．9％的样本有1条以上反社会人格障碍症状，38．0％符合物质滥用诊断，32．4％有抑郁障碍。分析显示，男性反社会人格障碍发生率高于女性（F相似值=1．40，P=0．001）。婴儿期虐待对反社会人格障碍的预测有统计学意义（β=0．28，P=0．03）。剔除物质滥用和抑郁障碍的作用后，婴儿期虐待与反社会人格障碍的关联仍有统计学意义（β=0．19，P=0．04）。结论婴儿期虐待对人格产生长期影响，增加日后反社会人格障碍的发生，值得探索其中的生物学机制；对我国建立从婴儿期开始的虐待监控干预体系也有借鉴意义。

目的系统调查文艺复兴时期的伟大画家如何在作品中呈现幼年耶稣的巴宾斯基征(Babinski sign)。设计观察性研究背景通过已发表的编目和谷歌。搜索大量公元1400-1550年期间弗菜芒画派(Flemish..莱茵面派(Rh.nish.和意大利学院源两家绘制的幼年耶穌画作。研究样本302幅文艺复兴时期描绘幼年基督的画作(来自19位画家)。主要结局指标巴宾斯基征的定义为婴儿大脚趾张开幅度超过30度。还应注意来自足底的朝激。结果在302幅绘面中,有90幅绘画(占比约30%)中出现了明显向上张开的脚趾。在由Rogier van der Weyden,h.ns Menling,Marin Sch.ngouer和Math.as Grinewald创作的幼年基督的作品中,有超过60%出现了巴宾斯基征。甚至在3幅西中,罌儿的两只脚都出现了巴宾斯基征。在90幅绘面的48幅中(占比53%)可观察到婴儿的脚底受到刺激。在所有Anilrea del Veroech.o,Leonurdo da Vinei和Giorgione的画作中,都有两只脚出现巴宾斯基征的圣婴形象。画中是否出现巴宾斯基征和画家所处的时代并无关联。结论与幼年基督的绘画中出现巴宾斯基征有关的四个主要因素为:婴儿脚趾张开的生理现象;15世纪的画家们对于基督裸体的描绘;文艺复兴时期的画家对解剖结构精确的观察;以及一些菜的画派和弗菜芒画派画家对于准确细节的追求。而意大利文艺复兴画家们,无论是否为矫饰主义者,都顿向于理想化人体结构.所以不会在他们的画中再现巴宾基斯征。
