We read with interest the study by Cho et al.1 regarding the features of subclinical varicocele in a pediatric and young adult single-center *** of 98 patients identified,the majority had a rightsided subclinical varicocele(69%,n=25),usually with a contralateral clinical *** asymmetry(>20%volume difference of the affected side by testicular atrophy index formula)was assessed in nine patients with unilateral subclinical varicocele without contralateral varicocele,either clinical or ***,of 17 patients with a mean follow-up of 32 months,3(17.6%)progressed to clinical varicocele without asymmetric testicular volume,as most remained subclinical or had subsequent resolution by *** authors concluded that subclinical varicoceles appeared unlikely to progress to a clinical disease,to affect testicular volume,or to lead to surgery.

AIM: To determine the complications and incidence of the first and second access-related vascular injuries induced by videolaparoscopic cholecistectomy. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed vascular injuries in 200 consecutive patients who underwent videolaparoscopic cholecistectomy from 2003 to 2005. One hundred and one patients with placement of radial expanding trocars were assigned into group A and 99 patients with placement of pyramidal tipped trocars into group B. All the patients were submitted to open access according to Hasson for the first trocar. RESULTS: Bleeding did not occur at the intraoperative cannula-site in group A. However, it occurred at the intraoperative cannula-site of 7 patients (7.1%) in group B, with a statistically significant difference (P no mortality was registered. More vascular lesions were found in group B. COnCLUSIOn: The advantage of Hasson technique is that peritoneal cavity access is gained under direct vision, preventing most severe injuries. The open technique with radial expanding trocars is recommended for secure access to the abdominal cavity in videolaparoscopy. Great care should be taken to avoid major complications and understanding the abdominal wall anatomy is important for reducing bleeding during or after s placement of trocars.

Background Biliary sphincter disorders after liver transplantation(LT)are poorly *** aim to describe the presence and outcome of patients with papillary stenosis(PS)and functional biliary sphincter disorders(FBSDs)after LT according to the updated Rome IV *** We reviewed all endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatographies(ERCPs)performed in LT recipients between January 2003 and December *** on clinical and endoscopic findings was obtained from electronic health records and endoscopy *** and clinical findings were collected at the time of ERCP and 1 month after *** Among the 1,307 LT recipients,336 underwent 849 ***(1.0%)patients met the updated Rome IV criteria for PS[former sphincter of Oddi dysfunction(SOD)type I]and 14 patients(1.0%)met the Rome IV criteria for FBSD(former SOD type II).Biliary sphincterotomy was performed in 13 PS and 10 FBSD *** month after sphincterotomy,bilirubin,gamma-glutamyl transferase and alkaline phosphatase levels decreased in 85%,61%,and 92%of those in the PS group(P¼0.019,0.087,and 0.003,respectively)and in 50%,70%,and 80%of those in the FBSD group(P¼0.721,0.013,and 0.093,respectively).All the 14 patients initially suspected of having a FBSD turned out to have a different diagnosis during the *** PS after LT is uncommon and occurs in only 1%of LT *** data do not support the presence of an FBSD after *** is a safe and effective procedure in LT recipients with PS.

The magnetic properties of the antiferromagnetic cores in ferritin are of importance in the construction and improvement of ferritin-based magnetic resonance imaging systems and their application to environmental *** this study,we carry out integrated magnetic and transmission electron microscopy analyses of horse spleen ferritin(HoSF)to understand the relationships between the magnetic behavior of HoSF and temperature,applied field and grain-size *** R-value from the Wohlfarth-Cisowski test for the investigated sample at 5 K was 0.46,indicating very weak magnetostatic interactions among the nanoparticles of *** nanoparticles of HoSF show superparamagnetic properties at room temperature,while below the blocking temperature of Tb≈12 K it has a net magnetic moment that comes from the uncompensated spins of the nanoparticle surface or *** thermal relaxation process of HoSF follows the néel-Arrhenius *** low-temperature AC susceptibility data,we calculated the effective magnetic anisotropy energy Ea=(5.52±0.16)×10-21 J;the effective magnetic anisotropy energy constant Keff=(4.65±0.14)×10 4 J/m3 and the pre-exponential frequency factor f0 =(4.52±2.93)×1011 *** values are useful in understanding the magnetic behavior of the antiferromagnetic nanoparticles and their potential application in biomedical technology.

The activity of various biofertilizers on rice production (Sabanero A95) was evaluated in Palizada, Campeche, Mexico, in the wet season of 2009 (year one) and 2011 (year two). On year one, arbuscular mycorrhiza InIFAP? (Rhizophagus intraradices), Azospirillum brasilense plus arbuscular micorrhiza Rhizophagus sp., and chemical fertilizer (92, -92, -60 kg·ha-1) were evaluated, while on year two marine algae extracts, a consortium of growth promoting bacteria (Pseudomonas spp.) and a control (not fertilized) were evaluated. The results showed that there were no significant differences on grain yield among treatments during the year one. The average grain yield was 2,800 kg·ha-1. As for the year two, the highest grain yield was observed on plots fertilized with chemical fertilizer (3333 kg·ha-1), followed by plots treated with mycorrhiza InIFAP? (3000 kg·ha-1). The economic analysis for rice production in both years showed that the use of arbuscular mycorrhiza decreases the cost of production by 18.5% and 16.3%, which suggests that microbial inoculants might be good substitutes of chemical fertilizers in rice production.

Microbial metabolites produced during fermentation migrate into the coffee and can influence the decrease in seed viability and coffee *** study evaluated the effects of physiological changes in seed viability on the sensory quality of the beverage using starter cultures through self-induced anaerobic fermentation(SIAF)in Coffea arabica *** natural and pulped *** yeasts were monitored by real-time polymerase chain reaction(qPCR).High-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC)detected citric,malic,and succinic acids in all fermented ***,lactic acid was mainly identified in those coffees processed by the SIAF *** compounds(40)were detected by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS).Alterations in physiological quality were identified,with decreased embryonic viability and cell membrane damage by tetrazolium and electrical conductivity *** fermented coffees obtained scores above 80 *** Torulospora delbrueckii yeast got the best score(86.50)in pulped coffee,and the Candida parapsilosis yeast received the highest score(85.90)in the natural coffee using the SIAF *** coffees were characterized by aromas and flavors of citrus,caramel,honey,chocolate,and *** coffee fermentation process with yeast inoculation affected the coffee bean viability but not the beverage’s sensory quality,indicating that the use of yeast starters by SIAF favors the production of specialty coffees with differentiated sensory characteristics.

In recent years the development of chitosan (CH) based materials as useful adsorbent polymeric matrices is an expanding field in the area of adsorption science. Even though CH has been successfully used for dye removal from aqueous solutions due to its low cost, no considerations have been made about, for example, the effect of changing the pH of chitosan hydrogelor about the dehydrating effect of Ethanol (EtOH) treatment of chitosan film on the dyes removal from water. Consequently in our laboratory we carried out a study focusing the attention, mainly, on the potential use of CH films under different conditions, such as reducing the intrinsic pH, increasing the hydrophobic character by means of ethanol treatment and neutralization of CH films to improve their absorption power. Textile anionic dyes named Direct Red 83:1, Direct Yellow 86 and Direct Blue 78 have been studied with the aim of reducing the contact time of CH film in waste water improving the bleaching efficiency. neutralized acid CH film and longtime dehydrated one result to be the better films in dye removal from water. Also the reduction of the CH solution acidity during the film preparation determines the decreasing of the contact time improving the results. The effect of initial dye concentration has been examined and the amount of dye adsorption in function of time t, qt (mg/cm2), for each analyzed film has been evaluated comparing the long term effect with the decoloration rate. A linear form of pseudo-first-order Lagergren model has been used and described. The best condition for removing all examined dyes from various dye solutions appears to be the dehydration of a novel projected CH film obtained by means of the film immersion in EtOH for 4 days. Also CH films prepared by well-known literature procedure and neutralized with naOH treatment appear having an excellent behavior, however the film treatment requires a large quantity of water and time.

An experiment was designed to determine the influence of fibre and betaine on the development of the intestine, liver and pancreas of broilers from hatch to 14 d of age. A total of 250-day-old Cobb 500 male broilers were allocated to 16 cages with 15 broilers each. Treatments were arranged in a 2 x 4 factorial design, consisting of 2 feed formulations(low and high fibre diets) and 4 levels of betaine(0,1, 3 or 5 kg/t). At hatch, 10 birds in total were euthanised, and samples of the liver, pancreas, yolk sac and intestine were collected for reference of the analysed parameters before the start of the *** d 4.9 and 14, 5 birds per cage(10 birds per treatment) were selected, euthanised and treated as the same as the birds at hatch. Villus height and width and crypt depth were determined on the duodenum samples, and absorptive area was calculated. The number of enterocytes in mitosis at the villus was determined by a positive reaction to antibody for Ki67 protein, and fused villus was evaluated visually. The relative weight of the yolk sac reduced(P ntestine and liver reached a maximum(P nd d 4 and the pancreas at d 9. Birds fed the high fibre diet had greater feed intake, lower relative weight of the pancreas and higher villus(P n birds fed the low fibre diet. Villus width increased(P nd this was associated with fused villus. Betaine inclusion reduced(P ncreased(P nd absorptive area, and reduced(P number of enterocytes with positive reaction for the antibody *** inclusion reduced the width and increased the absorptive area and the villus height of the duodenum of birds up to 14 d of age. The higher fibre diet increased feed intake and villus height, yet reduced pancreas relative weight, while not affecting body weight gain. This response was possibly due to a dilution effect of the fibre, reducing nutrient absorption
