Age structure of a lizard along an elevational gradient reveals nonlinear lifespan patterns with altitude

Lifespan is one of the main components of life *** lifespans can be expected in marginal ***,in the case of ectotherms,lifespan typically increases with altitude,even though temperature-one of the main factors to determine ectotherms'life history-declines with *** pattern can be explained by the fact that a shorter activity time favors *** this study,we analyzed how lifespan and other life-history traits of the lizard Psammodromus algirus vary along a 2,200 m elevational gradient in Sierra Nevada(SE Spain).Populations at inter-mediate altitudes(1,200-1,700 m),corresponding to the optimal habitat for this species,had the shortest lifespans,whereas populations inhabiting marginal habitats(at both low and at high altitudes)lived ***,this lizard did not follow the typical pattern of ectotherms,as it also lived longer at the lower limit of its distribution,nor did it show a longer lifespan in areas with optimal *** results might be explained by a complex combination of different gradients along the mountain,namely that activity time decreases with altitude whereas food availability *** could explain why lifespan was maximum at both high(limited activity time)and low(limited food availability)altitudes,resulting in similar lifespans in areas with contrasting environmental *** findings also indicated that reproductive investment and body condition increase with elevation,suggesting that alpine populations are locally adapted.

The basin of the former Lake Texcoco is located in the heart of one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world:mexico City （mAmC）.However,although the lake is a drying vessel of more than 90%,of their geophysical characteristics has not been completely urbanized,making it the ultimate outdoor space for the overcrowded population of the north-east;but at the same time,it is a considerable source of contamination for periphery-urban area by the large dust storms that are *** the amount of toxic substances that flow through their channels of *** reverse the harmful effects on human health and prevent pollution reaching the aquifer,the National Water Commission （NWC） has established the Lake Texcoco Ecological Park （LTEP）.The purpose of this study was to have a bio-geochemical diagnosis of the LTEP like background information to develop its comprehensive management ***,to know the sources of contamination,identify and quantify contaminants in rivers,sediment and soil were analyzed 27 factors LTEP physicochemical under NOm-001-SEmARNAT-1996,there were 11 vertical electrical soundings,33 CT Electrical *** sources of pollution produced by human activities （industrial,urban and agricultural） and two sources of mixed origin （natural-anthropogenic） hypersaline water,salinization of soils and sediment were *** parameters measured far exceed the maximum permissible limits established in *** found an effect of soil washing in the crevices of saline soils,being more pronounced at south of the polygon PELT.

Cover crops have long been proposed as an alternative soil management for minimizing erosion rates in olive stands while providing additional ecosystem ***,the trade-off between these benefits and the competition for water with the trees makes the definition of optimal management practices a challenging task in semiarid *** work presents an improved version of OliveCan,a process-based simulation model of olive orchards that now can simulate the main impacts of cover crops on the water and carbon balances of olive *** simple in its formulation,the new model components were developed to deal with different cover crop management *** are presented for simulation runs of a traditional olive orchard in the conditions of southern Spain,evaluating the effects of different widths for the strip occupied by the cover crop(Fcc)and two contrasting mowing *** revealed that high Fccresulted in lower olive yields,but only when mowing was applied at the end of *** this regard,late mowing and high Fccwas associated with lower soil water content from spring to summer,coinciding with olive flowering and the earlier stages of fruit *** also negatively correlated with surface runoff irrespective of the mowing *** the other hand,net ecosystem productivity(NEP)was substantially affected by both Fccand mowing *** simulations under future climate scenarios comparing the same management alternatives are also presented,showing substantial yield reductions by the end of the century and minor or negligible changes in NEP and seasonal runoff.

Evaluation of the Ex-PRESS~ P-50 implant under scleral flap in combined cataract and glaucoma surgery

AIm： To evaluate the efficacy and safety of glaucoma drainage device Ex-PRESS~ P-50 for combined cataract surgery and glaucoma.·mETHODS： Patients having cataract and open angle glaucoma or patients with open advanced glaucoma which needed two or more antiglaucoma medications were included. Combined cataract surgery and glaucoma with Ex-PRESS~ P-50 model placed under scleral flap was performed.·RESULTS： Out of 40 eyes of 40 patients（55% male and45% female） completed the study during one-year follow-up. The mean of age was 76.6 ±11.02 y. The intraocular pressure（IOP） decreased significantly during the 12-month follow-up from 23.5 mm Hg to 16.8 mm Hg（Wilcoxon signed ranks test, P 〈0.001）. A 59.5% of patients did not need any topical treatment, 10.8% of them needed one active principle, 27% needed two active principles, and 2.7% of them needed three active principles for successful IOP control（〈21 mm Hg）.·CONCLUSION：Combinedsurgeryofphacoemulsification with Ex PRESS~ P-50 lowers IOP from the preoperative baseline and reduces significantly the number of antiglaucoma active principles for IOP control after the operation.

Prognostic models based on survival data frequently make use of the Cox proportional hazards model. Developing reliable Cox models with few events relative to the number of predictors can be challenging, even in low-dimensional datasets, with a much larger number of observations than variables. In such a setting we examined the performance of methods used to estimate a Cox model, including （i） full model using all available predictors and estimated by standard techniques, （ii） backward elimination （BE）, （iii） ridge regression, （iv） least absolute shrinkage and selection operator （lasso）, and （v） elastic net. Based on a prospective cohort of patients with manifest coronary artery disease （CAD）, we performed a simulation study to compare the predictive accuracy, calibration, and discrimination of these approaches, Candidate predictors for incident cardiovascular events we used included clinical variables, biomarkers, and a selection of genetic variants associated with CAD. The penalized methods, i.e., ridge, lasso, and elastic net, showed a comparable performance, in terms of predictive accuracy, calibration, and discrimination, and outperformed BE and the full model. Excessive shrinkage was observed in some cases for the penalized methods, mostly on the simulation scenarios having the lowest ratio of a number of events to the number of variables. We conclude that in similar settings, these three penalized methods can be used interchangeably. The full model and backward elimination are not recommended in rare event scenarios.

Biosphere reserves are protected areas whose purpose is to combine conservation and sustainable ***,their effectiveness has not been tested sufficiently,especially from an ecological and genetic ap*** this sense,the Peromyscus genus represents an excellent bioindicator to address these questions,due to its short life and high evolutionary rate and *** conservation managers,genetic structure can increase the rate of loss of genetic diversity because alleles exclusive of a subpopulation are more likely to disappear as a consequence of genetic drift in comparison with a panmictic *** we analyzed the abundance,movement distances,morphology/morphometry and genetic structure of 3 populations of mexican deer mouse(Peromyscus mexicanus)located in different protected zones of La Tigra National Park(Honduras).Our results are consistent among the 3 approaches and showed the highest values of abundance,morphometry and genetic diversity in the population located at the core zone,whereas non-statistically significant differences were found between buffer and transition zone populations,suggesting suitable effectiveness of conservation management in the core zone but a lack of ecological buffering function of the other *** addition,the low movement distances and high genetic structure among the studied populations provide evidence of poor conservation management in the buffer and transition ***,we discuss the utility of the novel methodology used in this work,combining morphometry,abundance and genetics,in testing the effectiveness of conservation strategies in biosphere reserves,and the value of the Peromyscus genus as a bioindicator.

Symptoms of Tar Spot Complex (TSC) in corn appear in the form of black spots surrounded by a chlorotic halo known as fish-eye. The crop with these symptoms was found at San Pablo Autopan, Estado de mexico. The stromal region of foliar lesions was cut longitudinally, showing perithecia, asci and ascospores typical of Phyllachora maydis. The results were confirmed by PCR-ITS with ITS 1 and ITS4 initiators, cloned by pJET, before being sequenced and compared against NCBI’s data base. Phyllachora identity was confirmed. This is the first report where TSC pathogen has been detected under conditions that had not been previously reported, for instance, at 2600 meters above the sea level.

Improving outcomes in pancreatic cancer: Key points in perioperative management

This review focused in the perioperative management of patients with pancreatic cancer in order to improve the outcome of the disease. We consider that the most controversial points in pancreatic cancer management are jaundice management, vascular resection and neo-adjuvant therapy. Preoperative biliary drainage is recommended only in patients with severe jaundice, as it can lead to infectious cholangitis, pancreatitis and delay in resection, which can lead to tumor progression. The development of a phase III clinical trial is mandatory to clarify the role of neo-adjuvant radiochemotherapy in pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Venous resection does not adversely affect postoperative mortality and morbidity, therefore, the need for venous resection should not be a contraindication to surgical resection in selected patients. The data on arterial resection alone, or combined with vascular resection at the time of pancreatectomy are more heterogeneous, thus, patient age and comorbidity should be evaluated before a decision on operability is made. In patients undergoing R0 resection, arterial resection can also be performed.

Effect of the interfacial electric field on the HER on Pt(111)modified with iron adatoms in alkaline media

The study of the hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)aimed to reach a deeper understanding of the parameters that control the rate of this reaction is of great importance given the technical relevance of hydrogen production as an energy vector in the so-called hydrogen *** previous works,laser-induced temperature jump(LITJ)experiments on Pt(111)modified with Ni(OH)_(2)in alkaline media have revealed the importance of the interfacial electric field in the rate of the *** was hypothesised that small amounts of Ni(OH)_(2)cause a decrease of the electric field because of a negative shift of the pzfc toward the onset of the hydrogen *** this work,to test the validity of this hypothesis,the study has been extended to Pt(111)surfaces modified with Fe(OH)_(2).The modified surfaces have been studied voltammetrically,and the voltammetric charges have been *** voltammograms show a peak in the hydrogen evolution region that suggest the transformation in the adlayer from Fe(II)to Fe(0).In agreement with the coulometric analysis,the voltammetric features in the OH adsorption region would be related with the oxidation to the+3 valence *** results obtained with LITJ method reflect the existence of a strong interaction of the Fe oxophilic species with the water molecules,shifting the potential of maximum entropy away from the onset of the ***,the most catalytic surface is the one with the lowest Fe coverage.
