BACKGROUND The prevalence of heart failure(HF)increases with age,and it is one of the leading causes of hospitalization and death in older ***,there are little data on in-hospital mortality in patients with HF≥75 years in *** A retrospective analysis of the Spanish Minimum Basic Data Set was performed,including all HF episodes discharged from public hospitals in Spain between 2016 and *** was performed using the International Classification of Diseases,10th ***≥75 years with HF as the principal diagnosis were *** calculated:(1)the crude in-hospital mortality rate and its distribution according to age and sex;(2)the risk-standardized in-hospital mortality ratio;and(3)the association between in-hospital mortality and the availability of an intensive cardiac care unit(ICCU)in the *** We included 354,792 HF episodes of patients over 75 *** mean age was 85.2±5.5 years,and 59.2%of patients were *** most frequent comorbidities were renal failure(46.1%),diabetes mellitus(35.5%),valvular disease(33.9%),cardiorespiratory failure(29.8%),and hypertension(26.9%).In-hospital mortality was 12.7%,and increased with age[odds ratio(OR)=1.07,95%CI:1.07–1.07,P<0.001]and was lower in women(OR=0.96,95%CI:0.92–0.97,P<0.001).The main predictors of mortality were the presence of cardiogenic shock(OR=19.5,95%CI:16.8–22.7,P<0.001),stroke(OR=3.5,95%CI:3.0–4.0,P<0.001)and advanced cancer(OR=2.6,95%CI:2.5–2.8,P<0.001).In hospitals with ICCU,the in-hospital risk-adjusted mortality tended to be lower(OR=0.85,95%CI:0.72–1.00,P=0.053).CONCLUSIONS In-hospital mortality in patients with HF≥75 years between 2016 and 2019 was 12.7%,higher in males and elderly *** main predictors of mortality were cardiogenic shock,stroke,and advanced *** was a trend toward lower mortality in centers with an ICCU.

Novel suturing technique,based on physical principles,achieves a breaking point double that obtained by conventional techniques

Dear Editor, The synthesis of tetrapyrroles, including chlorophylls, is central for chloroplast function. The metabolic pathway of tetrapyrrole biosynthesis in Arabidopsis is initiated with the formation of amino levulinic acid （ALA）, which is con- verted by a series of common reactions to protoporphy- tin IX （Proto IX）（Tanaka et al., 2011）. Then the pathway diverges into two branches： the synthesis of heme/bilin and chlorophylls. The insertion of Mg2＋ into Proto IX, cata- lyzed by Mg-chelatase, is the first committed reaction of the chlorophyll branch and is considered a key step for the regulation of the whole pathway. Mg-chelatase is a het- erotrimeric enzyme composed of subunits CHLI, CHLD, and CHLH, the reaction mechanism of which has been estab- lished. It is a two-step process consisting in the Mg-ATP- dependent activation of the enzyme, which implies the formation of a ternary complex of subunits CHLI and CHLD with ATP-Mg2＋, and Mg2＋ chelation, which is catalyzed by CHLH driven by ATP hydrolysis, CHLI providing ATPase activity to the complex （Tanaka et al., 2011）. In Arabidopsis, CHLH and CHLD are encoded by single genes, whereas two genes, CHLI-I and CHLI-2, encode the two isoforms of CHLI.

Effects of Hedera helix L. removal on the understory early regeneration in an oak temperate forest in Mexico City

Background Hedera helix L. is an invasive weed species introduced in several regions of the world, so it is relevant to study its effects on the plant community and the changes occurring after its eradication. We established invaded(with/without removal of H. helix) and non-invaded(with/without removal of the understory) plots to compare some community attributes in an oak forest in Mexico City and monitored them every 2 months for 1 year, taking soil samples to compare some edaphic variables between the plots. If invasive species negatively affect natural regeneration, seedlings of native species would be less abundant in plots invaded by H. helix than in the non-invaded ones. As invasive species modify the soil microbiota through exudates and often allelochemicals, soil chemical variables would differ between invaded and non-invaded *** The abundance of native species was lower in the invaded plots, but the richness and diversity of species were not statistically different. The composition of the two invaded plots was similar to each other and more alike to that of the non-invaded plots. The species composition of the invaded plots was associated with soil potassium and phosphorus concentrations, whereas that of the non-invaded plots was more associated with soil nitrogen *** Following the removal of H. helix, several native species were registered, leading to a similar species composition as in the non-invaded plots, suggesting that some vegetation recovery can be expected following *** removal in 1 year.

Rare earth elements and yttrium in ferromanganese deposits from the South China Sea:distribution,composition and resource considerations

Ferromanganese nodules and crusts contain relatively high concentration of rare earth elements（REE） and yttrium（REY）,with a growing interest in exploitation as an alternative to land-based REY *** the basis of comprehensive geochemical approach,the abundance and distribution of REY in the ferromanganese nodules from the South China Sea are *** results indicate that the REY contents in ferromanganese deposits show a clear geographic *** REY contents range from 69.1×10^-6 to 2 919.4×10^-6,with an average value of 1 459.5×10^-***,the enrichment rate of Ce content is high,accounting for almost 60% of the total *** REE enrichment is controlled mainly by the sorption of ferromanganese oxides and clay minerals in the nodules and ***,the total REY are higher in ferromanganese deposits of hydrogenous origin than of diagenetic ***,Light REE（LREE） and heavy REE（HREE） oxides of the ferromanganese deposits in the study area can be classified into four grades： non-enriched type,weakly enriched type,enriched type,and extremely enriched *** to the classification criteria of rare earth resources,the Xisha and Zhongsha platform-central deep basin areas show a great potential for these rare earth metals.

Highly graphitized carbon nanosheets with embedded Ni nanocrystals as anode for Li-ion batteries

A C/Ni composite was prepared via thermal decomposition of a nickel oleate complex at 700℃,yielding disperse Ni nanocrystals with an average size of 20 nm,encapsulated by carbon nanosheets as deduced from transmission electron microscopy(TEM)images and confirmed from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS).Furthermore,the X-ray diffraction pattern revealed a good ordering of the carbon layers,forced by the Ni encapsulation to adopt a bending *** the close interaction between the graphitized framework and the metallic nanoparticles we have studied the properties of the composite as an anode for Li-ion *** with other nanostructured synthetic carbons,this carbon composite has a low voltage hysteresis and a modest irreversible capacity value,properties that play a significant role in its behaviour as electrodes in full cell *** moderate rate values,0.25 C,the electrode delivers an average capacity value around 723 mAh·g^−1 on cycling,among the highest values so far reported for this carbon *** higher rate values,1 C,the average capacity values delivered by the cell on cycling decrease,around 205 mAh·g^−1,but it maintains good capacity retention,a coulombic efficiency close to 100%after the first cycles and recovery of the capacity values when the rate is restored from 3 to 0.1 C.

Drug-induced liver injury(DILI) has become a major topic in the field of Hepatology and Gastroenterology. DILI can be clinically divided into three phenotypes: hepatocytic, cholestatic and mixed. Although the clinical manifestations of DILI are variable and the pathogenesis complicated, recent insights using improved preclinical models, have allowed a better understanding of the mechanisms that trigger liver damage. In this review, we will discuss the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying DILI. The toxicity of the drug eventually induces hepatocellular damage through multiple molecular pathways, including direct hepatic toxicity and innate and adaptive immune responses. Drugs or their metabolites, such as the common analgesic, acetaminophen, can cause direct hepatic toxicity through accumulation of reactive oxygen species and mitochondrial dysfunction. The innate and adaptive immune responses play also a very important role in the occurrence of idiosyncratic DILI. Furthermore, we examine common forms of hepatocyte death and their association with the activation of specific signaling pathways.
