Spices are defined as any aromatic condiment of plant origin used to alter the flavor and aroma of foods. Besides flavor and aroma, many spices have antioxidant activity, mainly related to the presence in cloves of phenolic compounds, such as flavonoids, terpenoids and eugenol. In turn, the most common uses of gum arabic are in the form of powder for addition to soft drink syrups, cuisine and baked goods, specifically to stabilize the texture of products, increase the viscosity of liquids and promote the leavening of baked products (e.g., cakes). Both eugenol, extracted from cloves, and gum arabic, extracted from the hardened sap of two species of the Acacia tree, are dietary constituents routinely consumed virtually throughout the world. Both of them are also widely used medicinally to inhibit oxidative stress and genotoxicity. The prevention arm of the study included groups: Ia, IIa, IIIa, Iva, V, VI, VII, VIII. Once a week for 20 weeks, the controls received saline s.c. while the experimental groups received DMH at 20 mg/kg s.c. During the same period and for an additional 9 weeks, the animals received either water, 10% GA, eUG, or 10% GA + eUG by gavage. The treatment arm of the study included groups Ib, IIb, IIIb e IVb, IX, X, XI, XII). Once a week for 20 weeks, the controls received saline s.c. while the experimental groups received DMH at 20 mg/kg s.c. During the subsequent 9 weeks, the animals received either water, 10% GA, eUG or 10% GA + eUG by gavage. The novelty of this study is the investigation of their use alone and together for the prevention and treatment of experimental colorectal carcinogenesis induced by dimethylhydrazine. Our results show that the combined use of 10% gum arabic and eugenol was effective, with antioxidant action in the colon, as well as reducing oxidative stress in all colon segments and preventing and treating genotoxicity in all colon segments. Feeding on clean food?Potential effects of electric organ discharges by Torpedo spp.(Torpediniformes:Torpedinidae)on their trophically transmitted parasites

Members of the Torpedinidae(torpedoes)and Hypnidae(coffin ray)use electric organ discharges(eOD)to stun or kill their prey before consumption.We investigated whether eOD could also negatively affect the helminth larvae infecting these preys through a surrogate model:we applied electric discharges to individuals of blue whiting,Micromesistius poutassou,that harbored live larvae of Anisakis.Larval mortality throughout a 6-h period was significantly higher in the treatment group,suggesting that eODs could significantly hamper helminth recruitment.We then tested whether torpedinids and hypnids(“strong-eOD”families)harbored species-poor helminth(cestode)assemblages compared with“weak-eOD”Torpediniformes(Narcidae and Narkidae)and other Batoidea.Based on comparisons on estimated species diversity and mean species richness of tapeworms at host individual level we found that(i)Torpediniformes had the lowest tapeworm diversity of all Batoidea orders;(ii)Torpedo spp.consistently had the lowest mean cestode richness at host individual level,and this could not be related to other host factors influencing cestode diversity in chondrichthyans,that is body size,trophic level or dietary breath.However,a preliminary comparison between“strong-eOD”and“weak-eOD”Torpediniformes did not detect clear differences of cestode richness.Thus,evidence supporting an unambiguous contribution of eODs to depauperate cestode assemblages requires further research.

Diffusion dynamics and characterization of attogram masses in optically trapped single nanoparticles using laser-induced plasma imaging

In the present work,a wavelength-selected plasma imaging analysis system is presented and used to track photons emitted from single-trapped nanoparticles in air at atmospheric pressure.The isolated nanoentities were atomized and excited into plasma state using single nanosecond laser pulses.The use of appropriate wavelength filters alongside time-optimized acquisition settings enabled the detection of molecular and atomic emissions in the plasma.The photon detection efficiency of the imaging line resulted in a signal>400 times larger than the simultaneously-acquired dispersive spectroscopy data.The increase in sensitivity outlined the evolution of diverse physicochemical processes at the single particle scale which included heat and momentum transfer from the plasma into the particle as wells as chemical reactions.The imaging detection of excited fragments evidenced different diffusion kinetics and time frames for atoms and molecules and their influence upon both the spectroscopic emission readout and fabrication processes using the plasma as a reactor.Moreover,the origin of molecular species,whether naturally-occurring or derived from a chemical reaction in the plasma,could also be studied on the basis of compositional gradients found on the images.Limits of detection for the inspected species ranged from tens to hundreds attograms,thus leading to an exceptional sensing principle for single nanoentities that may impact several areas of science and technology.

Do biometric payment systems work during the COVID-19 pandemic?Insights from the Spanish users’viewpoint

Technological developments are changing how users pay for goods and services.In the context of the COVID-19(coronavirus disease 2019)pandemic,new payment systems have been established to reduce contact between buyer and seller.In addition to the pandemic,the future is payment processing is also uncertain due to the new eU security regulations of the Payment Services Directive(PSD2).Biometric payments one option that would guarantee the security of transactions and reduce the risk of conta-gion.This research analyses the intention to recommend the use of the mobile phone as a tool for collecting payments in a shop using iris reading as a biometric measure of the buyer.The moderating effect of the fear of contagion in the proposed relationships was also analysed.An online survey was carried out,which yielded a sample of 368 respondents.The results indicate that the main antecedents of intention to use,which precedes intention to recommend,are perceived trust,habit,personal innovativeness and comfort of use.Additionally,the moderating effect of COVID-19 was checked among users with a higher perception of risk.The results obtained have interesting implications for purchase management among manufacturers and retailers.

Meso-Archean to Mid-Paleozoic Granitoids in Oulad Dlim Massif(the Pericratonic Terrane of the Reguibat Shield,West African Craton,Morocco):Petrology,Geochemistry,Geochronology and Geological Implications

The Oulad Dlim Massif,adjacent to the Reguibat Shield in South Morocco was considered up to now as part of the Variscan belt(Mauritanides)with a polyphase geologic history and a complex geodynamic evolution implicating oceans closures and accretion of exotic terranes(Avalonian and Meguman)during the Variscan-Alleghanian orogeny.The use of modern technology to characterize the petrology,the geochemistry and the geochronology of the lithological units forming this region,combined to field surveys has led to an updated geological architecture and different geological history.The Oulad Dlim Massif is mainly a deformed Archean terrane,as recorded by its eastern and western sectors,dominated in its central part by a bimodal felsic-mafic magmatism forming the ediacaran sector.The study of these magmatic complexes supports strongly the intracontinental origin of this bimodal magmatism vs.the oceanic origin published before in literature.The exploration of this massif conducted also to the identification of a Silurian-Devonian sector in the western part.Therefore,up to date,different magmatic events lasting from the Meso-Archean to the Cretaceous are recorded in the Oulad Dlim Massif rocks,among them different generations of granitoids are reported.New data on granitoids from the ediacaran sector are presented in this paper.This recent data demonstrates that Oulad Dlim Massif has been affected by the main ediacaran–Cambrian extensional event widely documented in other structural domains of Morocco and other parts of North Gondwana.Additionally,the study of the Silurian-Devonian sector rocks highlighted the presence of a Caledonian tectonic event challenging the ideas about the paleogeography of this part of northwestern Africa and its geological evolution during the Paleozoic.However,despite the significant contribution of this extensive survey and the abundance of data on the Oulad Dlim Massif,more studies are required to reconstruct the puzzle at plate tectonic scale.

Virtual Staining,Segmentation,and Classification of Blood Smears for Label-Free Hematology Analysis

Objective and Impact Statement.We present a fully automated hematological analysis framework based on single-channel(single-wavelength),label-free deep-ultraviolet(UV)microscopy that serves as a fast,cost-effective alternative to conventional hematology analyzers.Introduction.Hematological analysis is essential for the diagnosis and monitoring of several diseases but requires complex systems operated by trained personnel,costly chemical reagents,and lengthy protocols.Label-free techniques eliminate the need for staining or additional preprocessing and can lead to faster analysis and a simpler workflow.In this work,we leverage the unique capabilities of deep-UV microscopy as a label-free,molecular imaging technique to develop a deep learning-based pipeline that enables virtual staining,segmentation,classification,and counting of white blood cells(WBCs)in single-channel images of peripheral blood smears.Methods.We train independent deep networks to virtually stain and segment grayscale images of smears.The segmented images are then used to train a classifier to yield a quantitative five-part WBC differential.Results.Our virtual staining scheme accurately recapitulates the appearance of cells under conventional Giemsa staining,the gold standard in hematology.The trained cellular and nuclear segmentation networks achieve high accuracy,and the classifier can achieve a quantitative five-part differential on unseen test data.Conclusion.This proposed automated hematology analysis framework could greatly simplify and improve current complete blood count and blood smear analysis and lead to the development of a simple,fast,and low-cost,point-of-care hematology analyzer.

A perspective on potassic and ultrapotassic rocks:Constraints on the Paleoproterozoic late to post-collisional event in the São francisco paleocontinent

The late-to post-collisional stage in orogenic systems is characterized by the coeval existence of bimodal potassic to ultrapotassic magmatic activity related to partial melting of an enriched lithospheric mantle together with crustal derived melts.In this paper,we present new whole rock geochemical analyses combined with zircon and titanite U–Pb and zircon Hf isotopic data from potassic to ultrapotassic rocks from six plutons that occur within the Archean Itacambira-Monte Azul block(BIMA),to discuss their petrogenesis and the tectonic implications for the São francisco paleocontinent.The new U–Pb ages range from ca.2.06 Ga to 1.98 Ga and reveal long-lasting potassic magmatism within the BIMA,which is within the late-to-post-collisional stage of the São francisco paleocontinent evolution.The ultrapotassic rocks are compatible with a fluid-related metasomatized mantle source enriched by previous subduction events,whereas the potassic rocks are bimodal and have a transitional shoshonitic to A-type affinity.These rocks have a hybrid nature,possible related to the mixing between the mafic potassic/ultrapotassic rocks and high temperature crustal melts of the Archean continental crust.Our results also show an increase of within-plate signature towards the younger potassic magmas.The participation of an important Archean crustal component in the genesis of these rocks is highlighted by the common and occasionally abundant occurrence of Archean inherited zircons.The Hf isotopic record shows that most of the zircon inheritance has dominantly subchondriticεHf(t)values,which fits a crustal reworking derivation from a similar eo-to Paleoarchean precursor crust.However,the presence of juvenile 2.36 Ga zircon inheritance in an ultrapotassic sample reveal the existence of a hidden reservoir that is somewhat similar to the described for the Mineiro Belt in southern São francisco paleocontinent.

Parkinson’s disease (P D) is a com plex neu rodegenerative disorder for which ra re and common genetic variants contribute to disease risk,onset,and progression.The genetic contribution to PD can be classified mainly in,first,rare DNA variants that are highly penetrant and therefore causal,which are typically associated with monogenic PD;and second,more common risk polymorphic variants,which individually exert a small increase in the risk of the disease,which are usually identified in the most prevalent and apparently sporadic PD (Blauwendraat et al.,2020).

Kidney stone matrix proteins:Role in stone formation

Stone formation is induced by an increased level of urine crystallization promoters and reduced levels of its inhibitors.Crystallization inhibitors include citrate,magnesium,zinc,and organic compounds such as glycosaminoglycans.In the urine,there are various proteins,such as uromodulin(Tamm-Horsfall protein),calgranulin,osteopontin,bikunin,and nephrocalcin,that are present in the stone matrix.The presence of several carboxyl groups in these macromolecules reduces calcium oxalate monohydrate crystal adhesion to the urinary epithelium and could potentially protect against lithiasis.Proteins are the most abundant component of kidney stone matrix,and their presence may reflect the process of stone formation.Many recent studies have explored the proteomics of urinary stones.Among the stone matrix proteins,the most frequently identified were uromodulin,S100 proteins(calgranulins A and B),osteopontin,and several other proteins typically engaged in inflammation and immune response.The normal level and structure of these macromolecules may constitute protection against calcium salt formation.Paradoxically,most of them may act as both promoters and inhibitors depending on circumstances.Many of these proteins have other functions in modulating oxidative stress,immune function,and inflammation that could also influence stone formation.Yet,the role of these kidney stone matrix proteins needs to be established through more studies comparing urinary stone proteomics between stone formers and non-stone formers.

Background:emerging research supports the idea that exercise positively affects neurodevelopment.However,the mechanisms linking exercise with brain health are largely unknown.We aimed to investigate the effect of exercise on(a)blood biomarkers selected based on previous evidence(brainderived neurotrophic factor,β-hydroxybutyrate(BHB),cathepsin B(CTSB),kynurenine,fibroblast growth factor 21(FGF21),soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1(sVCAM-1));and(b)a panel of 92 neurology-related proteins(discovery analysis).We also investigated whether changes in these biomarkers mediate the effects of exercise on brain health(hippocampal structure and function,cognitive performance,and mental health).Methods:We randomized 81 overweight/obese children(10.1±1.1 years,41%girls)into 2 groups:either 20 weeks of aerobic plus resistance exercise or control.Candidate biomarkers were assessed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(eLISA)for kynurenine,FGF21,and CTSB;colorimetry forβ-hydroxybutyrate;and XMap for brain-derived neurotrophic factor and soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1.The92 neurology-related proteins were analyzed by an antibody-based proteomic analysis.Results:Our intervention had no significant effect on candidate biomarkers(all p>0.05).In the discovery analysis,a reduction in circulating macrophage scavenger receptor type-I was observed(standardized differences between groups=-0.3,p=0.001).This effect was validated using eLISA methods(standardized difference=-0.3,p=0.01).None of the biomarkers mediated the effects of exercise on brain health.Conclusions:Our study does not support a chronic effect of exercise on candidate biomarkers.We observed that while chronic exercise reduced the levels of macrophage scavenger receptor type-Ⅰ,it did not mediate the effects of exercise on brain health.Future studies should explore the implications of this novel biomarker for overall health.
