This study analyzes the stable isotopic ratio(δ18 O)and the synoptic characteristics of a precipitation event that occurred in the southernmost state of Brazil,Rio Grande do Sul,a region sensitive to explosive cyclogenesis in years with enhanced tropic-pole interactions.The main objective was to evaluate the influence of tropical and Antarctic climate systems on the event.Cavity ring-down spectroscopy was used for the water isotopic analysis,and NCeP CFSv2 data were employed for the synoptic analysis of rainfall over a 48-h period.An Amazonian isotopic signature on precipitated water was identified.A strong,low-level meridional flow from the Amazon Basin,combined with the development of a frontal system,resulted in intense cyclogenesis that generated an explosive cyclone.

Ferromanganese nodules and crusts contain relatively high concentration of rare earth elements（Ree） and yttrium（ReY）,with a growing interest in exploitation as an alternative to land-based ReY resources.On the basis of comprehensive geochemical approach,the abundance and distribution of ReY in the ferromanganese nodules from the South China Sea are analyzed.The results indicate that the ReY contents in ferromanganese deposits show a clear geographic regularity.Total ReY contents range from 69.1×10^-6 to 2 919.4×10^-6,with an average value of 1 459.5×10^-6.especially,the enrichment rate of Ce content is high,accounting for almost 60% of the total ReY.This Ree enrichment is controlled mainly by the sorption of ferromanganese oxides and clay minerals in the nodules and crusts.Moreover,the total ReY are higher in ferromanganese deposits of hydrogenous origin than of diagenetic origin.Finally,Light Ree（LRee） and heavy Ree（HRee） oxides of the ferromanganese deposits in the study area can be classified into four grades： non-enriched type,weakly enriched type,enriched type,and extremely enriched type.According to the classification criteria of rare earth resources,the Xisha and Zhongsha platform-central deep basin areas show a great potential for these rare earth metals.

The leaching kinetics in cyanide media of the silver contained in the Dos Carlos waste tailings at the City of Pachuca de Soto, Hidalgo State, Mexico were carried out. The used material contained the following chemical composition: 56 10-6of Ag, 0.6 10 6of Au and 70.43%(by weight) of SiO2; 7.032%(by weight) of Al2O3; 2.69%(by weight) of Fe; 0.46%(by weight) of Mn; 3.98%(by weight) of K2O; 3.34%(by weight) of CaO; 2.50%(by weight) of Na2O; 0.04%(by weight) of Zn; 0.026%(by weight) of Pb. The mineralogical phases present were the following: Silica, albite, argentite, berlinite, orthoclase, potassium jarosite, and natrojarosite. In the leaching kinetics in cyanide media, and under the studied conditions,the effect of the CN concentration on the reaction rate has no effect on the whole process of alkaline cyanidation, of which the reaction order is n 0. Temperature has an effect on the cyanidation rate of the reaction, with an activation energy of 47.9 KJ/mol. At the same time, when the particle size decreases there is an increase in the reaction rate, which is inversely proportional to the particle diameter; when increasing the NaOH concentration there is an increase in the reaction rate Kexp, with a reaction order(n) of 0.215 under the studied ranges.

Plant nonspecific lipid transfer proteins (nsLTPs) are widely distributed through plant kingdom and are characterized by the presence of a central hydrophobic cavity, suitable for binding various hydrophobic molecules. Despite extensive research on nsLTP in different plant species, mostly angiosperm, and the great diversity of physiological processes in which they seem to be involved, their exact functions still remain unclear. Also, very limited experimental data are available on nsLTP in gymnosperm. In this study, we report for the first time on the molecular cloning of nsLTP, from Pinus sylvestris L.(PsLTP1, GenBank accession JN980402.1) and the expression pattern of PsLTP1 during ontogenesis and in response to environmental stress conditions. Total RNA from roots of 7-day old pine seedlings was used to isolate the cDNA clone, corresponding to Scots pine lipid transfer protein. The open reading frame of PsLTP1 consists of 372 bp encoding a protein of 123 amino acids. Amino acid sequence alignment revealed that mature PsLTP1 shares high level of similarity with nsLTP from other conifers and with well-studied nsLTPs from angiosperms. The PsLTP1 contains a 27-amino-acid N-terminal signal sequence and presents all the features of a plant nsLTP. Amino acid comparison analysis and 3D structure prediction showed that PsLTP1 is a type 1 nsLTP. The results of the expression analysis of Scots pine PsLTP1 gene revealed that its transcripts accumulate in actively growing tissues. Furthermore, transcription of PsLTP1 was upregulated in response to cold and salt treatments, and downregulated during acidic, osmotic and water stresses.

This article looks at a didactic experience at the undergraduate level in civil engineering, specifically, teaching a mathematics course through smartphones. The objective was to teach a course of an engineering degree primarily using this technology, in order to promote among the students their skills and competencies to develop and present a theme. It should be mentioned that every student in this case study used his/her knowledge at unusual hours, that is, 1 a.m. or 2 a.m., sharing their work with me or asking me for academic help to solve a specific problem. This adaptation process in teaching practice is not easy and may not be achieved in a short period of time. The principal idea to highlight is that planning activities with new technologies cannot be carried out spontaneously and must be based on an educational model. Another important thing in this type of courses is the assessment of the teacher, priority of education administrators. Based on a questionnaire distributed to the students upon conclusion of the course, a statistic and probabilities analysis was carried out, showing surprising results regarding the questions—Did you like the course? What did you not like about the course? And What would you change about the course?

Ulcerative colitis is a global health problem,affecting millions of individuals worldwide.As an inflammatory condition localised in the large intestine,rectal delivery of immunosuppressive therapies such as tacrolimus is a promising strategy to maximise drug concentration at the site of action whilst minimising systemic side effects.Here,for the first time,self-supporting 3D-printed tacrolimus suppositories were prepared without the aid of moulds using a pharmaceutical semi-solid extrusion(SSe)3D printer.The suppositories were printed vertically in three different sizes using combinations of two lipid pharmaceutical excipients(Gelucire 44/14 or Gelucire 48/16)and coconut oil.Although both suppository formulations had the appropriate viscosity characteristics for printing,the Gel 44 formulation required less energy and force for extrusion compared to the Gel 48 system.The Gel 44 disintegrated more rapidly but released tacrolimus more slowly than the Gel 48 suppositories.Although the tacrolimus release profiles were significantly different,both suppository systems released more than 80% drug within 120 min.DSC and XRD analysis was inconclusive in determining the solid-state properties of the drug in the suppositories.In summary,this article reports on the fabrication of 3D printed selfsupporting suppositories to deliver personalised doses of a narrow therapeutic index drug,with potential benefits for patients with ulcerative colitis.

A C/Ni composite was prepared via thermal decomposition of a nickel oleate complex at 700℃,yielding disperse Ni nanocrystals with an average size of 20 nm,encapsulated by carbon nanosheets as deduced from transmission electron microscopy(TeM)images and confirmed from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS).Furthermore,the X-ray diffraction pattern revealed a good ordering of the carbon layers,forced by the Ni encapsulation to adopt a bending structure.Considering the close interaction between the graphitized framework and the metallic nanoparticles we have studied the properties of the composite as an anode for Li-ion batteries.Compared with other nanostructured synthetic carbons,this carbon composite has a low voltage hysteresis and a modest irreversible capacity value,properties that play a significant role in its behaviour as electrodes in full cell configuration.At moderate rate values,0.25 C,the electrode delivers an average capacity value around 723 mAh·g^−1 on cycling,among the highest values so far reported for this carbon type.At higher rate values,1 C,the average capacity values delivered by the cell on cycling decrease,around 205 mAh·g^−1,but it maintains good capacity retention,a coulombic efficiency close to 100%after the first cycles and recovery of the capacity values when the rate is restored from 3 to 0.1 C.

Background:To settle the fundamentals of a numerical procedure that relates retinal ganglion-cell density and threshold sensitivity in the visual field.The sensitivity of a generated retina and visual pathways to virtual stimuli are simulated,and the conditions required to reproduce glaucoma-type defects both in the optic-nerve head(ONH)and visual fields are explored.Methods:A definition of selected structural elements of the optic pathways is a requisite to a translation of clinical knowledge to computer programs for visual field exploration.The program is able to generate a database of normalized visual fields.The relationship between the number of extant receptive fields and threshold sensitivity is plotted for background sensitivity and corresponding automated perimetry.A solution in two planes to the 3D distribution of axons in the ONH is proposed.Visual fields with induced damage in the optic disc are comparable in pattern and quantity to glaucomatous records.Results:The two-level simulation of the ONH facilitates the analysis of optic-cup/retinal defects.We can generate the virtual optic pathways tailored to the age and morphology of the patient’s eye,and it is possible to reproduce glaucomatous damage by“reverse engineering”engineering.The virtual cortical model renders a quantitative relationship between visual defect and neural damage.Conclusions:A two-level computing of the retina/optic nerve facilitates the analysis of neuroretinal defects and can be incorporated to automatic perimeters to facilitate visual field analysis.

Prolonged activation of adenosine A1 receptor likely leads to damage of dopaminergic neurons and subsequent development of neurodegenerative diseases.However,the pathogenesis underlying long-term adenosine A1 receptor activation-induced neurodegeneration remains unclear.In this study,rats were intraperitoneally injected with 5 mg/kg of the adenosine A1 receptor agonist N6-cyclopentyladenosine(CPA)for five weeks.The mobility of rats was evaluated by forced swimming test,while their cognitive capabilities were evaluated by Y-maze test.expression of sortilin,α-synuclein,p-JUN,and c-JUN proteins in the substantia nigra were detected by western blot analysis.In addition,immunofluorescence staining of sortilin andα-synuclein was performed to detect expression in the substantia nigra.The results showed that,compared with adenosine A1 receptor antagonist 8-cyclopentyl-1,3-dipropylxanthine(5 mg/kg)+CPA co-treated rats,motor and memory abilities were reduced,surface expression of sortin andα-synuclein in dopaminergic neurons was reduced,and total sortilin and totalα-synuclein were increased in CPA-treated rats.MN9D cells were incubated with 500 nM CPA alone or in combination with 10μM SP600125(JNK inhibitor)for 48 hours.Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis of sortilin andα-synuclein mRNA levels in MN9D cells revealed upregulated sortilin expression in MN9D cells cultured with CPA alone,but the combination of CPA and SP600125 could inhibit this expression.Predictions made using Jasper,PROMO,and Alibaba online databases identified a highly conserved sequence in the sortilin promoter that was predicted to bind JUN in both humans and rodents.A luciferase reporter assay of sortilin promoter plasmid-transfected HeK293T cells confirmed this prediction.After sortilin expression was inhibited by sh-SORT1,expression of p-JUN and c-JUN was detected by western blot analysis.Long-term adenosine A1 receptor activation levels upregulatedα-synuclein expression at the post-transcriptional level by affecting sortilin ex
