Beyond habitat structure: Landscape heterogeneity explains the monito del monte (Dromiciops gliroides) occurrence and behavior at habitats dominated by exotic trees

Habitat structure determines species occurrence and behavior.However,human activities are altering natural habitat structure,potentially hampering native species due to the loss of nesting cavities,shelter or movement pathways.The South American temperate rainforest is experiencing an accelerated loss and degradation,compromising the persistence of many native species,and particularly of the monito del monte(Dromiciops gliroides Thomas,1894),an arboreal marsupial that plays a key role as seed disperser.Aiming to compare 2 contrasting habitats(a native forest and a transformed habitat composed of abandoned eucalyptus plantations and native understory vegetation),we assessed D.gliroides’occurrence using camera traps and measured several structural features(e.***.shrub and bamboo cover,deadwood presence,moss abundance)at 100 camera ***plementarily,we used radio telemetry to assess its spatial ecology,aiming to depict a more complete scenario.Moss abundance was the only significant variable explaining D.gliroides occurrence between habitats,and no structural variable explained its occurrence at the transformed habitat.There were no differences in home range,core area or inter-individual overlapping.In the transformed habitats,tracked individuals used native and eucalyptus-associated vegetation types according to their abundance.Diurnal locations(and,hence,nesting sites)were located exclusively in native vegetation.The landscape heterogeneity resulting from the vicinity of native and eucalyptus-associated vegetation likely explains D.gliroides occurrence better than the habitat structure itself,as it may be use eucalyptus-associated vegetation for feeding purposes but depend on native vegetation for nesting.

Hummingbird species have closely evolved with the plants they feed on,which is confirmed by their often tight ecological relationships in natural settings.Hummingbird-plant interactions are of interest for research areas such as ecology,evolution,and even agriculture,as they usually inform on the conservation status of interacting species assemblages,and its disappearance may precede the population extinction of the species involved in the interaction.In Chile,there are nine hummingbird species,which interact with a large and diverse number of angiosperm species in forest,desert,and mountain range environments.The motivation to perform this review is to systematize the available information regarding the flowering plants visited by hummingbird species in Chile,to present some basic plant-hummingbird pollination network metrics,and on this basis to identify the components of the plant-hummingbird relationships in need of further research.A plant-hummingbird metanetwork revealed a low connectance value,low niche overlap,and strong modularity among species.However,the fact that most species present a strong allopatric distribution across Chile,suggests that network structure results mostly from the history of colonization rather than from ecological organization.Nowadays,the main threats to Chilean hummingbirds are anthropogenic disturbance and climate change,which disrupt hummingbird-plant interactions,leading to unpredictable ecological consequences at the community level.Long periods of drought may reduce the resource base for hummingbirds,with dramatic consequences for the maintenance of bird and plant populations.

Although urethral strictures have been known since antiquity,the surgical management of urethral strictures has undergone a great(re)evolution over the last six decades,both in the perception of the disease and in the surgical repair techniques,always presenting itself as a challenge for the surgeon and patient.Reconstruction of urethral stricture disease involving a combination of grafts and flaps consists of a group of complex procedures with specific clinical indications.The knowledge of these procedures by reconstructive urologists is both necessary and relevant.A thorough understanding of the anatomy,including blood supply,is a crucial proviso for the correct evaluation and successful management of urethral stricture disease.We discuss the main techniques and indications in combined graft and flap urethroplasties.

Structure,stability,catalytic activity,and polarizabilities of small iridium clusters

At the second order Douglas–Kroll–Hess（DKH2） level, the B3 PW91 functional in conjunction with the relativistic all-electron basis set of valence triple zeta quality plus polarization functions are employed to compute bond lengths, dissociation energies, vertical ionization potentials, and the highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy gaps of the small iridium clusters（Irn, n≤8）. These results are compared with the experimental and theoretical data available in the literature. Our results confirm the theoretical predictions made by Feng et al. about the catalytic activities of the Ir4 and Ir6 clusters. From the optimized geometries, DKH2 calculations of static electric mean dipole polarizabilities and polarizability anisotropies are also carried out. It is the first time that the polarizabilities of small iridium clusters have been studied. For n≤4, the mean dipole polarizabilities per atom present an odd–even oscillatory behavior,whereas from Ir5 to Ir8, they decrease with the cluster size increasing. The dependence of the polarizability anisotropy on the structure symmetry of the iridium cluster is verified.

Dipole (hyper)polarizabilities of neutral silver clusters

At the Douglas-Kroll-Hess （DKI4） level, the B3PW91 functional along with the all-eleclron relativistic basis sets of valence triple and quadruple zeta qualities are used to determine the structure, stability, and electronic properties of the small silver clusters （Agn, n ≤ 7）. The results presented in this study are in good agreement with the experimental data and theoretical values obtained at a higher level of theory from the literature. Static polarizability and hyperpolarizability are also reported. It is verified that the mean dipole polarizability per atom exhibits an odd-even oscillation and that the polarizability anisotropy is directly related to the cluster shape. In this article, the first study of hyperpolarizabilities of small silver clusters is presented. except for the monomer, the second hyperpolarizabilities of the silver clusters are significantly larger than those of the copper clusters.

Virtual Staining,Segmentation,and Classification of Blood Smears for Label-Free Hematology Analysis

Objective and Impact Statement.We present a fully automated hematological analysis framework based on single-channel(single-wavelength),label-free deep-ultraviolet(UV)microscopy that serves as a fast,cost-effective alternative to conventional hematology analyzers.Introduction.Hematological analysis is essential for the diagnosis and monitoring of several diseases but requires complex systems operated by trained personnel,costly chemical reagents,and lengthy protocols.Label-free techniques eliminate the need for staining or additional preprocessing and can lead to faster analysis and a simpler workflow.In this work,we leverage the unique capabilities of deep-UV microscopy as a label-free,molecular imaging technique to develop a deep learning-based pipeline that enables virtual staining,segmentation,classification,and counting of white blood cells(WBCs)in single-channel images of peripheral blood smears.Methods.We train independent deep networks to virtually stain and segment grayscale images of smears.The segmented images are then used to train a classifier to yield a quantitative five-part WBC differential.Results.Our virtual staining scheme accurately recapitulates the appearance of cells under conventional Giemsa staining,the gold standard in hematology.The trained cellular and nuclear segmentation networks achieve high accuracy,and the classifier can achieve a quantitative five-part differential on unseen test data.Conclusion.This proposed automated hematology analysis framework could greatly simplify and improve current complete blood count and blood smear analysis and lead to the development of a simple,fast,and low-cost,point-of-care hematology analyzer.

Does wetland watershed land use influence amphibian larval development? A relevant effect of agriculture on biota

Agriculture practices have been widely proposed as the major cause of amphibian population decline. However, the majority of these results have been based on laboratory experiments. The present study was conducted to test the repercussion of wetland sediment provenance on amphibian larval development.Bufo bufo larvae were used in two dif ferent treatments in an outdoor experiment, the ?rst one using sediment from one wetland surrounded by intensive agricultural practices, and the second using sediment with no record of agrochemical uses. A negative ef fect was observed in the agricultural treatment, from subcellular to individual level. The results showed that the sediment from agricultural practices watershed generates a reduction in survival. Furthermore, individuals that developed under this treatment showed a lower total length and a delay in the time necessary to complete metamorphosis; these features are connected with recruitment success. In the same way, biochemical analysis showed high values of lipid peroxidation in metamorphs developing in sediments from an agricultural area. Finally, the results obtained highlight the importance of considering the sediments, not only the water, as origin treatment, allowing us to understand the consequences on amphibian populations that inhabit areas af fected by intensive agriculture.

Plants respond to pathogenic cues with a transcriptional reprog-ramming that leads to de novo production of defense-related pro-teins and a huge variety of secondary metabolites(e.g.,phyto-alexins,phenolics,etc.).Activation of these host defenses,which contribute to halt the intruder as part of the resistance,im-plies an increased demand for metabolic energy and carbon skel-etons derived from primary metabolism(Bolton,2009).

Nuclear accidents have led to the release to the environment of radioactive isotopes,mainly radioactive cesium(Cs^(+)),contaminating large areas of soil for very long periods of time(Burger and Lichtscheidl,2018).These contaminated soils contain^(134)Cs^(+)and^(137)Cs^(+)radioisotopes that are readily accumulated into plants and that,through the food chain,are transferred to animals and humans,causing important health problems(Burger and Lichtscheidl,2018).

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome is a severe cardio pulmonary disease transmitted to humans by sylvan rodents found in natural and rural environments.Disease transmission is closely linked to the ecology of animal reservoirs and abiotic factors such as habitat characteristics,season or climatic conditions.The main goals of this research were:to determine the biotic and abiotic factors affecting richness and abundance of rodent species at different spatial scales,to evaluate different methodologies for studying population of small rodents,and to describe and analyze an ecologically-based rodent management experience in a highly touristic area.A 4-year study of small rodent ecology was conducted between April 2007 and August 2011 in the most relevant habitats of el Palmar National Park,Argentina.Management involved a wide range of control and prevention measures,including poisoning,culling and habitat modification.A total of 172 individuals of 5 species were captured with a trapping effort of 13860 traps-nights(1.24 individuals/100 traps-nights).Five rodent species were captured,including 2 hantavirus-host species,Oligoryzomys nigripes and Akodon azarae.Oligoryzomys nigripes,host of a hantavirus that is pathogenic in humans,was the most abundant species and the only one found in all the studied habitats.Our results are inconsistent with the dilution effect hypothesis.The present study demonstrates that sylvan rodent species,including the hantavirus-host species,have distinct local habitat selection and temporal variation patterns in abundance,which may influence the risk of human exposure to hantavirus and may have practical implications for disease transmission as well as for reservoir management.
