ENSO impacts on litter stocks and water holding capacity in secondary forests in eastern Amazonia

Among the impacts of climate change,there is the intensification of phenomena such as the El Niño South-ern Oscillation(ENSO)responsible for El Niño and La Niñ***,understanding their effects on the functional pro-cesses of forests is ***,this study evaluated the effects of ENSO on litter stock and water holding capac-ity(WHC)in a successional forest in eastern *** occurred in periods with the most rainfall in El Niño(2019)and least in La Niña(2021)*** permanent plots were used to sample *** effects were evident for WHC,higher during El Niñ***,this influence was not clear for litter,as only in the rainy season effects were *** was a positive correlation of WHC with precipitation and humidity,while litter stocks were negatively correlated with temperature and wind *** the subject of this study requires long-term assessments,preliminary results suggests that,depending on the intensity of ENSO,forest functional processes can be strongly impacted and *** conclusion reinforces warnings by the scientific community about the impacts of climate change on the maintenance of litter stocks,decomposition and,consequently,the biogeochemical cycle and essential ecosystem services for the maintenance of Amazonia *** need to develop long-term research to understand the effects of climatic change on litter stocks and water holding capacity is highlighted,especially in Amazonia.

Comparative Analysis of Gas Emissions from a Vehicle Running on Ethanol and Natural Gas Fuel

It is known that the transport sector has a fundamental importance in the modem society, as the economic development is directly linked to mobility. Over the years, the transport became linked to different environmental problems, which can be detached greenhouse gases emissions in the atmosphere, where in recent decades can be perceived the intensification and targeting of efforts in research and development of new technologies to reduce the levels of greenhouse gases emissions in the atmosphere. In this context, it can be highlighted the modem systems of electronic engine management, new automotive catalysts and the use of renewable fuels which contribute to reducing the environmental impact. This research had, as its purpose, the analysis of fuels characteristics used for testing, comparative analysis of gas emissions from a motor vehicle running on ethanol or natural gas fuels according to NBR 6601 and conducting tests to estimate the maximum catalytic efficiency. For the implementation of trial, a flex vehicle was installed in a chassis dynamometer equipped with a gas analyzer, in order that before the completion of the urban driving cycle, were determined the content of hydrocarbons corrected, carbon monoxide corrected, carbon dioxide and oxygen present in gas emissions from the engine. The research concluded that： the performance analysis for characterization of fuel showed consistent with ANP specifications; after tests performances, it can be stated that natural gas fuel was the fuel which had the highest content of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide corrected, while ethanol had the highest amount of carbon dioxide and oxygen residue present in gas emissions; before a comparative analysis, the vehicle catalyst showed the best performance for reducing the content of hydrocarbon corrected present in exhaustion gases when it worked with natural gas fuel and showed maximum efficiency of 100% to reduce the content of carbon monoxide corrected for both fuels. Impacts of land use and land cover changes on hydrological processes and sediment yield determined using the SWAT model

Land use and land cover (LULC) changes strongly affect local hydrology and sediment *** current study focused on a basin in the Brazilian Amazon and had the following three objectives:(1) to perform an effective diagnosis of flow and sediment yield,(2) to evaluate the impacts of LULC changes over the last 40 years on the hydro-sedimentological variables,and (3) to investigate the impacts of the possible trends or breaking points in the flow,surface runoff,and sediment yield *** Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model validation showed that the simulated results were consistent with the data measured in the dynamic reproduction of flow ***,changes in LULC altered surface runoff,sediment yield,and flow according to the Mann-Kendall and Pettitt non-parametric *** was also observed that the sub-basins in which pastureland is predominant are more susceptible to increased surface runoff and sediment *** to trend and homogeneity tests,these sub-basins had break points in the time series of these *** the other hand,in the sub-basins whose land cover is predominantly forest,the time series is homogeneous and *** current study highlighted the impacts that 40 years of LULC changes in an Amazonian basin had on hydro-sedimentological variables,which,in turn,can play an important role in changing the hydrological cycle,consequently these changes can also impact diverse human activities in the region,such as agribusiness,livestock,energy production,food security,and public water ***,it is concluded that the SWAT model is a good estimator of hydro-sedimentological processes in Amazonian basins and can be used by decision makers in the management of water and environmental resources.

Increasing continental suspended sediment influx to coral reefs is an example of land-sea coupling that requires the identification of sources,magnitude of transport,and controlling *** Brazil,a small coastal basin(Macae River) was identified as a source of suspended sediment to a coral reef on the coast of Cape Armacao dos *** suspended sediment loads were measured at the basin as were fluxes within the estuary and towards the coast during eight tidal *** load and yield from this basin were typical of small coastal basins,showing high to moderate slopes and transitional land ***,the magnitude of the river loads was lower than the sediment transport within the estuary,indicating that the estuary amplifies river fluxes and sustains the transference of suspended sediment alongshore to the coral ***,the estuary displays both suspended particle retention and export capacity and,therefore,fluxes to the coast and the coral reef occur as episodic events.

Out of Sight, Out of Mind, Right? Not in COVID-19 Shock or Anaerobic and Exhaustive Shock versus Septic Shock Dilemma That Means to Live or Die. Emergency Attention and a Necessity of Trials

Background: COVID-19 brought challenges that did not end after a two-year pandemic. From more straightforward changes in habits to studying to understand the enigmatic parasite-host relationship, we can better manage the patient infected with SARS-CoV-2 even with a vaccine full of doubts and antivirals that do not correctly cover the viral period. SARS-CoV-2 brought the chronic inflammation now called “The Long COVID-19 Syndrome” (LCS), something still little talked about, but we already see deaths due to non-identification of this inflammatory syndrome that can lead to shock. Theory: LCS Shock is due to a long period of metabolic stress, reflecting the shift from inflammation to oxidative stress and innate immunity, and does not respond to antimicrobials, as its main component is inflammatory, although there may be conjoined bacterial translocation. Thus, we are losing patients to a new syndrome confused with sepsis and septic shock. While septic shock (SS) responds to antimicrobials, Inflammatory Shock (ISc) does not respond to antimicrobials alone, requiring high doses of corticosteroids. Review: This study shows that we need to differentiate SS and ISC, as the treatment is different. The review shows that Lactate, LDH and the presence of new/recent cardiac changes and bradycardia in the face of a status where there should be tachycardia as the usual response can differ ISC from SS. Maybe the main responsible for high LDH is Warburg Effect. Conclusion: We have a dilemma that requires clinical studies that routinely match high doses of corticosteroids (until there is something better to be done) and bring laboratory and imaging differences to diagnose SS vs ISc better.

The Dog as a Risk Factor in Transmission of Visceral Leishmaniasis: A Review

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a serious public health problem in Brazil and worldwide. despite the euthanasia of dogs serologically positive, such action has not solved the endemic in Brazil. A risk area for VL involves the presence of the vector, the occurrence of canines and the record of human cases. The factors that have favored the persistence and spread of VL in Brazil are related to the predatory action of man on the environment, to the migratory movements and rural exodus, and a close coexistence of man and animals. Thus considering the epidemiological chain of VL, one fact seems clear: we do not know yet the true extent of the participation of the dog in the infectious cycle of VL. The clinical disease is an important indicator of the extent of the problem in an endemic area. The immunological events are complex and involve resistance and susceptibility to canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL). One aspect in CVL is that many symptomatic dogs underwent xenodiagnosis not infect the vector. In such cases the pattern recognition receptors CD11b+, TLR2+, and NO present higher values for dogs with results in immunohistochemistry of skin and xenodiagnosis negative (IMH-/XENO-) than dogs with immunohistochemistry in skin and xenodiagnosis positive (IMH+/XENO+), suggesting that innate immunity modulates the competence of the dog to infect the vector. The organic response in CVL varies from individual to individual and within the same individual, with a strong evidence of being organ-specific. Only 20% of asymptomatic dogs have parasites in the skin and 15% are able to recover from clinical signs and eliminate the parasites spontaneously. In this review, we analyze the epidemiology of visceral leishmaniasis and clinical, immunological and pathological conditions that can contribute to understanding the role of dogs in transmission of visceral leishmaniasis.

Pollen of Bauhinia *** Phanera Lour.(Leguminosae-Caesalpinioideae)from the Brazilian Caatinga

A study of pollen morphology, in species of the genera Bauhinia and Phanera (Leguminosae-Caesalpinioideae) which occur in the Brazilian caatinga, is presented. The pollen was examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. Samples were prepared by the KOH method;non-treated pollen grains were examined by scanning electron microscopy. Pollen grains in Bauhinia species (11) are colpate, but porate in B. cheilantha and B. subclavata. All four species of Phanera present colporate pollen grains;P. outimouta is the only to have syncolporate pollen grains. Species of both genera present heteromorphism in the number of apertures. Excepting P. outimouta whose pollen grains are psilate, all species in the two genera present supratectal processes (gemmae/clavae), however the exine in the two genera are dif- ferent–semitectate, reticulate in Bauhinia species, and tectate, rugulate (or psilate) in Phanera ones. Pollen characters support the segregation of Phanera from Bauhinia.

Aquatic Macrophytes detritus Quality and Sulfate Availability Shape the Methane Production Pattern in a Dystrophic Coastal Lagoon

Aquatic macrophytes usually show high productivity rate, especially in shallow environments, and may constitute the main source of organic matter to these ecosystems. The coastal lagoons are shallow environments that typically present a broad colonization by aquatic macrophytes. The organic matter derived from aquatic macrophytes consists of detritus and root exudates, from live plants. Methanogens are microorganisms that use labile organic matter (e.g. acetate) in the metabolism, releasing methane (CH4) as an end product. Assessing the influence of aquatic macrophytes on methanogenesis is fundamental to understanding the carbon cycle in shallow environments, such as coastal lagoons. A peculiarity of coastal lagoons that may also influence the methanogenesis is its proximity to the sea, providing the entrance of sulfate in the environment. The methanogenesis can be inhibited by the sulfate reduction when there is sulfate availability sulfate. In this context, we aimed to analyze the methane production in an aquatic macrophyte stand and in the limnetic region of a coastal lagoon, assessing the influence of quantity and quality of organic carbon and sulfate availability on methane production in the sediment profile. We observe that the presence of aquatic macrophytes benefits the methanogenesis, not only by detritus accumulation, but particularly by the release of root exudates from the living plants. The variation in quantity and quality of organic carbon is the main factor that controls the range and shape of the methane production curves. The availability of sulfate presents probably a secondary role, being important when the organic matter is not sufficient for the occurrence of methanogenesis and sulfate reduction simultaneously.

Impact of a Non-<i>Saccharomyces</i>Yeast Isolated in the Equatorial Region in the Acceptance of Wine Aroma

The aim of this work was to isolate and identify the yeasts prevalent in fresh grapes cultivated in the “São francisco Valley” region (Brazil), as well as evaluating the cell growth of these indigenous yeasts during the fermentation of grape musts and their contribution to the improvement of wine aroma. The Chenin Blanc grape must fermented by H. opuntiae presented higher acceptance means at the three points analyzed (6.74, 6.78 and 7.30) and in the fermentation carried out by the yeasts H. opuntiae and S. cerevisiae, the highest mean acceptance (7.22) was observed after 120 hours, with no statistical difference from the sample fermented by H. opuntiae alone. Since these samples that showed higher acceptance means also receiving higher scores for purchasing intention, corresponding to the concepts of “definitely would buy” and “probably would buy”. The present study suggests that the fermentations of grape musts carried out by the yeast H. opuntiae and mixed cultures of H. opuntiae and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, positively influenced the sensory qualities of the wines and showed greater potential to increase the aroma of the musts and to develop specific wine styles.
