Background Hedera helix *** an invasive weed species introduced in several regions of the world,so it is relevant to study its effects on the plant community and the changes occurring after its *** established invaded(with/without removal of ***)and non-invaded(with/without removal of the understory)plots to compare some community attributes in an oak forest in Mexico City and monitored them every 2 months for 1 year,taking soil samples to compare some edaphic variables between the *** invasive species negatively affect natural regenera-tion,seedlings of native species would be less abundant in plots invaded by *** than in the non-invaded *** invasive species modify the soil microbiota through exudates and often allelochemicals,soil chemical variables would differ between invaded and non-invaded *** The abundance of native species was lower in the invaded plots,but the richness and diversity of species were not statistically *** composition of the two invaded plots was similar to each other and more alike to that of the non-invaded *** species composition of the invaded plots was associated with soil potassium and phosphorus concentrations,whereas that of the non-invaded plots was more associated with soil nitrogen *** Following the removal of ***,several native species were registered,leading to a similar species composition as in the non-invaded plots,suggesting that some vegetation recovery can be expected following *** removal in 1 year.

Drug-induced liver injury(DILI) has become a major topic in the field of Hepatology and Gastroenterology. DILI can be clinically divided into three phenotypes: hepatocytic, cholestatic and mixed. Although the clinical manifestations of DILI are variable and the pathogenesis complicated, recent insights using improved preclinical models, have allowed a better understanding of the mechanisms that trigger liver damage. In this review, we will discuss the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying DILI. The toxicity of the drug eventually induces hepatocellular damage through multiple molecular pathways, including direct hepatic toxicity and innate and adaptive immune responses. Drugs or their metabolites, such as the common analgesic, acetaminophen, can cause direct hepatic toxicity through accumulation of reactive oxygen species and mitochondrial dysfunction. The innate and adaptive immune responses play also a very important role in the occurrence of idiosyncratic DILI. Furthermore, we examine common forms of hepatocyte death and their association with the activation of specific signaling pathways.

Characterization of a Collection of Brassica carinata Genotypes for in vitro Culture Response and Mode of Shoot Regeneration

Brassica carinata, a natural alloploid formed between B. oleracea and B. nigra, is a potential oil crop for the Mediterranean area in which genetic transformation could help to breeding. In vitro culture and shoot regeneration are key factors in developing an efficient transformation method in the genus Brassica. However, the studies for in vitro culture and shoot regeneration in B. carinata are limited to only a few genotypes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro culture response and shoot regeneration in a collection of B. carinata accessions to identify promising genotypes with high shoot regeneration for genetic transformation experiments. Cotyledonary explants from 51 genotypes were cultured in vitro and callus formation and swelling as well as the mode of shoot regeneration evaluated. A highly positive response to in vitro culture, i.e. callus formation or swelling, was observed in all the genotypes tested. Tissue blackening occurred only in eleven genotypes. Parameters like callus formation and swelling, and number of shoots per explant were highly variable among genotypes. Fourteen genotypes regenerated only via callus formation, whereas only one regenerated only via swelling. Most genotypes showed a higher percentage of callus formation than swelling. The average number of shoots regenerating per explant among genotypes was the most variable factor measured. Six genotypes regenerated more than 6 shoots per explant via callus phase. These genotypes have been identified as having a high regeneration potential and can be used in genetic transformation via Agrobacterium.

Duodenal diverticula are a relatively common condition. They are asymptomatic, unless they become complicated, with perforation being the rarest but most severe complication. Surgical treatment is the most frequently performed approach. We report the case of a patient with a perforated duodenal diverticulum, which was diagnosed early and treated conservatively with antibiotics and percutaneous drainage of secondary retroperitoneal abscesses. We suggest this method could be an acceptable option for the management of similar cases, provided that the patient is in good general condition and without septic signs.

Laparoscopic approach in gastrointestinal emergencies

This review focuses on the laparoscopic approach to gastrointestinal emergencies and its more recent indications. Laparoscopic surgery has a specific place in elective procedures, but that does not apply in emergency situations. In specific emergencies, there is a huge range of indications and different techniques to apply, and not all of them are equally settle. We consider that the most controversial points in minimally invasive procedures are indications in emergency situations due to technical difficulties. Some pathologies, such as oesophageal emergencies, obstruction due to colon cancer, abdominal hernias or incarcerated postsurgical hernias, are nearly always resolved by conventional surgery, that is, an open approach due to limited intraabdominal cavity space or due to the vulnerability of the bowel. These technical problems have been solved in many diseases, such as for perforated peptic ulcer or acute appendectomy for which a laparoscopic approach has become a wellknown and globally supported procedure. On the other hand, endoscopic procedures have acquired further indications, relegating surgical solutions to a second place; this happens in cholangitis or pancreatic abscess drainage. This endoluminal approach avoids the need for laparoscopic development in these diseases. nevertheless, new instruments and new technologies could extend the laparoscopic approach to a broader array of potentials procedures. There remains, however, a long way to go.

AIM To demonstrate the non-inferiority(15% non-inferiority limit) of monotherapy with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate(TDF) vs the combination of lamivudine(LAM) plus adefovir dipivoxil(ADV) in the maintenance of virologic response in patients with chronic hepatitis B(CHB) and prior failure with *** This study was a Phase IV prospective, randomized, open, controlled study with 2 parallel groups(TDF and LAM+ADV) of adult patients with hepatitis B e antigen(HBe Ag)-negative CHB, prior failure with LAM, on treatment with LAM+ADV for at least 6 mo, without prior resistance to ADV and with an undetectable viral load at the start of the study, in 14 Spanish hospitals. The follow-up time for each patient was 48 wk after randomization, with quarterly visits in which the viral load, biochemical and serological parameters, adverse effects, adherence to treatment and consumption of hospital resources were *** Forty-six patients were evaluated [median age: 55.4 years(30.2-75.2); 84.8% male], including 22 patients with TDF and 24 with LAM+ADV. During study development, hepatitis B virus DnA(HBV-DnA) remained undetectable, all patients remained HBe Ag negative, and hepatitis B surface antigen(HBs Ag) positive. Translational pancreatic cancer research:a comparative study on patient-derived xenograft models

AIM To assess the viability of orthotopic and heterotopic patient-derived pancreatic cancer xenografts implanted into nude *** This study presents a prospective experimental analytical follow-up of the development of tumours in mice upon implantation of human pancreatic adenocarcinoma samples. Specimens were obtained surgically from patients with a pathological diagnosis of pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Tumour samples from pancreatic cancer patients were transplanted into nude mice in three different locations(intraperitoneal, subcutaneous and pancreatic). Histological analysis(haematoxylin-eosin and Masson's trichrome staining) and immunohistochemical assessment of apoptosis(TUnEL), proliferation(Ki-67), angiogenesis(CD31) and fibrogenesis(α-SMA) were performed. When a tumour xenograft reached the target size, it was reimplanted in a new nude mouse. Three sequential tumour xenograft generations were generated(F1, F2 and F3).RESULTS The overall tumour engraftment rate was 61.1%. The subcutaneous model was most effective in terms of tissue growth(69.9%), followed by intraperitoneal(57.6%) and pancreatic(55%) models. Tumour development was faster in the subcutaneous model(17.7 ± 2.6 wk) compared with the pancreatic(23.1 ± 2.3 wk) and intraperitoneal(25.0 ± 2.7 wk) models(P = 0.064). There was a progressive increase in the tumour engraftment rate over successive generations for all three models(F1 28.1% vs F2 71.4% vs F3 80.9%, P no significant differences in tumour xenograft differentiation and cell proliferation between human samples and the three experimental models among the sequential generations of tumour xenografts. However, a progressive decrease in fibrosis, fibrogenesis, tumour vascularisation and apoptosis was observed in the three experimental models compared with the human samples.
