Tropical alpine ecosystems exhibit outstanding plant diversity and endemism while being particularly sensitive to the impacts of climate *** understanding spatiotemporal changes in plant species composition,richness and community structure along tropical alpine altitudinal gradients is of primary importance,both the functional and historical/biogeographic dimensions of vegetation diversity remain largely *** used Generalized Linear Models and multivariate analyses to assess changes in species,growth forms,and biogeographic groups richness and abundance,in response to habitat variables along an elevation gradient in seven summits(3800 to 4600 m asl)in the Venezuelan Andes,studied using the standardized approach of the GLORIA-Andes monitoring *** habitat variables assessed were soil temperature(-10 cm),soil organic matter,slope inclination,and substrate *** found 113 species,representing72 genera,32 families,13 growth forms,and seven biogeographic origins,that included 25%of endemic *** observed richer vegetation,both in terms of species and growth forms,in summits with higher soil temperatures and higher sOM content,as well as higher biogeographic origin richness with increasing soil *** presence of holarctic elements increased toward higher elevations,while the occurrence of austral antarctic elements increased toward lower *** results indicate that biogeographic and functional approaches to vegetation diversity capture well the effect of abiotic filtering on community structuring in these tropical alpine *** findings constitute an important baseline for monitoring vegetation dynamics linked to climate change in the Venezuelan Andes by highlighting the functional and historical perspective on vegetation analyses,in contrast with more traditional approaches,based only on taxonomic species diversity.

Investigation of Galactic open cluster remnants： the case of NGC 7193

Galactic open clusters （OCs） that survive the early gas-expulsion phase are gradually de- stroyed over time by the action of disruptive dynamical processes. Their final evolutionary stages are characterized by a poorly populated concentration of stars called an open cluster remnant （OCR）. This study is devoted to assessing the real physical nature of the OCR candidate NGC 7193. GMOs/Gemini spectroscopy of 53 stars in the inner target region were obtained to derive radial velocities and at- mospheric parameters. We also employed photometric and proper motion data. The analysis method consists of the following steps：（i） analysis of the statistical resemblance between the cluster and a set of field samples with respect to the sequences defined in color-magnitude diagrams （CMDs）; （ii） a 5-dimensional iterative exclusion routine was employed to identify outliers from kinematical and posi- tional data; （iii） isochrone fitting to thes× （j - Ks） CMD of the remaining stars and the dispersion of spectral types along empirical sequences in the （j - H） × （H - Ks） diagram were checked. A group of stars was identified for which the mean heliocentric distance is compatible with that obtained via isochrone fitting and whose metallicities are compatible with each other. Fifteen of the member stars observed spectroscopically were identified together with another 19 probable members. Our results indi- cate that NGC 7193 is a genuine OCR, of a once very populous OC, for which the following parameters were derived： d = 501±46 pc, t = 2.5±1.2 Gyr, （[Fe/H]） = -0.17±0.23 and E（B-V） = 0.05±0.05. Its luminosity and mass functions show depletion of low mass stars, confirming the OCR is in a dynam- ically evolved state.

Growth of Niobium Thin Films on si substrates by Pulsed Nd:YAG Laser Deposition

The growth of Nb thin films on si（100） substrates by different laser fluences （4-15 j/cm2） was reported, The pulsed Nd：YAG laser deposition （PLD） under influence of laser fluence on ablation rate and deposition rate was discussed. X-ray diffraction （XRD） investigations of the deposited films showed an amorphous structure. The droplet density on the film surface observed by scanning electron microscopy （sEM） analyses was extremely low. It was experimentally proved that the droplets on the film surface originated from liquid phase on the target surface, Profilometric measurements of the deposited Nb films revealed a substantial asymmetry in the film thickness related to the plume deflection effect. The measured electrical resistivity of the Nb film was higher than that of high purity Nb bulk. The present investigations of ablation and deposition process of Nb thin films are related to its potential application in superconducting radio-frequency （sRF） cavities.

The study of the hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)aimed to reach a deeper understanding of the parameters that control the rate of this reaction is of great importance given the technical relevance of hydrogen production as an energy vector in the so-called hydrogen *** previous works,laser-induced temperature jump(LITj)experiments on Pt(111)modified with Ni(OH)_(2)in alkaline media have revealed the importance of the interfacial electric field in the rate of the *** was hypothesised that small amounts of Ni(OH)_(2)cause a decrease of the electric field because of a negative shift of the pzfc toward the onset of the hydrogen *** this work,to test the validity of this hypothesis,the study has been extended to Pt(111)surfaces modified with Fe(OH)_(2).The modified surfaces have been studied voltammetrically,and the voltammetric charges have been *** voltammograms show a peak in the hydrogen evolution region that suggest the transformation in the adlayer from Fe(II)to Fe(0).In agreement with the coulometric analysis,the voltammetric features in the OH adsorption region would be related with the oxidation to the+3 valence *** results obtained with LITj method reflect the existence of a strong interaction of the Fe oxophilic species with the water molecules,shifting the potential of maximum entropy away from the onset of the ***,the most catalytic surface is the one with the lowest Fe coverage.

Aims While the influence of mistletoe-host interactions on each other’s evolution is well-recognized,the role of interactions between mis-tletoes and its mutualistic pollinators and seed dispersers mediated by host species is relatively *** Here,we examine the effects of host species(Mexican hawthorn Crataegus mexicana DC,black cherry Prunus serotina Ehrh.,leather-leaf Mexican oak Quercus crassipes Bonpl.)on flower morphology,nectar production,pollinator visitation rate and female reproduct-ive fitness in hemiparasitic Mexican mistletoe Psittacanthus caly-culatus(DC.)***(Loranthaceae)populations at three different *** first measured the lengths of corolla,style,stamen,exerted stamen and anther,the length and width of the ovary and nectar availability for mistletoe flowers in natural ***,we evaluated flower visitation and measured(length and width)and weighed the fruits and its seeds of mistletoes growing on each of the three host ***,we evaluated the effects of host species,location and flower traits on fruit or seed size variation(both as proxies of reproductive fitness).Important Findings We found mistletoes growing on natural hosts *** and *** produced larger flowers,fruits and seeds than mistle-toes on cultivated ***,these differences varied across *** amount of available nectar and hummingbird vis-itation rates in flowers of mistletoes on *** was higher at the three sites than in flowers of mistletoes on *** or *** effects of host species,study site and floral trait covariates affected significantly all fitness measures,indicating that mistletoes’reproductive fitness is affected differently depending on the host species and their site of *** host-associated differ-ences in reproduction might have implications for interactions with mutualistic vectors.

Knowledge regarding the influence of individual traits on interaction patterns in nature can help understand the topological role of individuals within a network of intrapopulation *** tested hypotheses on the relationships between individuals'positions within networks(specialization and centrality)of 4 populations of the mouse opossum Gracilinanus agilis and their traits(i.e.,body length,body condition,tail length relative to body length,sex,reproductive condition,and botfly parasitism)and also seasonal effects in the Brazilian *** with lower body length,better body condition,and relatively shorter tail were more specialized(i.e.,less connected within the network).Individuals were also more specialized and less connected during the warm-wet *** relationship between individuals'position in the network and body traits,however,was independent of *** propose that specialization may arise not only as a result of preferred feed-ing strategies by more capable individuals(i.e.,those with better body condition and potentially prone to defend and access high-quality food resources)but alsobecause of morphological ***/younger individuals(consequently with less experience in foraging)and short-tailed individuals(less skilled to explore the vertical strata of the vegetation)would feed only on a subset of the available food resources and consequently become more ***,individuals are more specialized during the warm-wet season because of high competition(population-dense period)and higher ecological opportunities(resource-rich period).Therefore,our study reveals the relevance of individual traits inshaping interactionpatternsandspecialization inpopulations.

There is evidence supporting the hypothesis that inflammation participates in providing conditions that lead to *** unresolved inflammation due to any failure in the precise control of the immune response can continue to perturb the cellular microenvironment, thereby leading to alterations in cancer-related genes and posttranslational modification in crucial cellular proteins involved in the cell cycle,DNA repair and *** addition,there are data indicating that inflammatory cells and immunomodulatory mediators present in the tumor microenvironment influence tumor progression and ***,tumor-infiltrating leukocytes have been considered to be manifestations of an intrinsic defence mechanism against developing ***,increasing evidence indicates that leukocyte infiltration can promote tumor phenotypes, such as angiogenesis,growth and *** may be due to inflammatory cells that probably can influence cancer promotion by secreting cytokines,growth factors,chemokines and proteases,which stimulate proliferation and invasiveness of cancer ***-quently,events and molecules implicated in this cross talk between the tumor microenvironment and inflam- matory process may emerge as attractive targets in anticancer therapeutic interventions with significant clinical impact.

The prostate of weaned pups is altered by maternal malnutrition during lactation in rats

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of maternal malnutrition during lactation on prostate growth and estradiol serum concentration in the prostate of pups. At delivery,nine Wistar rats were separated into three groups：control group （C） with free access to a standard laboratory diet containing 22% protein;protein-energyrestricted group （PER） with free access to an isoenergy and protein-restricted diet containing 8% protein;and energyrestricted group （ER） receiving standard laboratory diet in restricted quantities,which were calculated according to the mean ingestion of the PER group. All pups were killed at weaning. PER and ER groups presented a significant reduction in estradiol serum concentration （C = 73.8±4.6,PER=48.7±3.2,ER = 59.7±5.5 pg mL^-1,P〈0.01）,total prostatic acini （C = 24 190.0±716.5,PER = 20 290.0±631.4,ER=19 550.0±759.1 μm^2;P〈0.01）,lumen of the prostatic acini （C = 5 590.0±165.4,PER = 3 776.0±251.3,ER = 4 658.0±198.1 μm^2;P〈0.01） and epithelial area of the prostate dorsal lobe （C=18 120.0±391.4,PER=16 520.0±799.2,ER = 14 890.0±589.8 μm^2;P〈0.01）.Testosterone concentration was significantly increased only in the PER group when compared with the C group （C = 0.09±0.01,PER = 0.44±0.04,ER=0.15±0.03 ng mL^-1,P〈0.001）. An adequate nutritional state in early life is important for normal growth of the prostate gland,which seem to be related to serum levels of estradiol.
