GSTARS com.uter m.dels and their applications, part I:theoretical developm.nt

GSTARS is a series of com.uter m.dels developed by the U.S. Bureau of Reclam.tion for alluvial river and reservoir sedim.ntation studies while the authors were em.loyed by that agency. The first version of GSTARS was released in 1986 using Fortran IV for m.infram. com.uters. GSTARS 2.0 was released in 1998 for personal com.uter application with m.st of the code in the original GSTARS revised, im.roved, and expanded using Fortran IV/77. GSTARS 2.1 is an im.roved and revised GSTARS 2.0 with graphical user interface. The unique features of all GSTARS m.dels are the conj.nctive use of the stream.tube concept and of the m.nim.m.stream.power theory. The application of m.nim.m.stream.power theory allows the determ.nation of optim.m.channel geom.try with variable channel width and cross-sectional shape. The use of the stream.tube concept enables the simulation of river hydraulics using one-dim.nsional num.rical solutions to obtain a sem.-two-dim.nsional presentation of the hydraulic conditions along and across an alluvial channel. According to the stream.tube concept, no water or sedim.nt particles can cross the walls of stream.tubes, which is valid for m.ny natural rivers. At and near sharp bends, however, sedim.nt particles m.y cross the boundaries of stream.tubes. GSTARS3, based on FORTRAN 90/95, addresses this phenom.non and further expands the capabilities of GSTARS 2.1 for cohesive and non-cohesive sedim.nt transport in rivers and reservoirs. This paper presents the concepts, m.thods, and techniques used to develop the GSTARS series of com.uter m.dels, especially GSTARS3.

In part 1 of this two-paper series, a brief sum.ary of the basic concepts and theories used in developing the Generalized Stream.Tube m.del for Alluvial River simulation (GSTARS) com.uter m.dels was presented. Part 2 provides exam.les that illustrate som. of the capabilities of the GSTARS m.dels and how they can be applied to solve a wide range of river and reservoir sedim.ntation problem.. Laboratory and field case studies are used and the exam.les show representative applications of the earlier and of the m.re recent versions of GSTARS. Som. of the m.re recent capabilities im.lem.nted in GSTARS3, one of the latest versions of the series, are also discussed here with m.re detail.

In this editorial we exam.ne the article by Wu et al published in the World j.urnal of Gastrointestinal *** resection for peritoneal m.tastases from.colorectal cancer(CRC)has been gradually accepted in the m.dical oncology com.unity.A random.zed trial(PRODIGE 7)on cytoreductive surgery(CRS)with hypertherm.c intraperitoneal chem.therapy(HIPEC)failed to prove any benefit of oxaliplatin in the overall survival of patients with peritoneal m.tastases from.colorectal ***,isolated system.c chem.therapy for CRC stage IV has dem.nstrated a reduced response in peritoneal m.tastases than that obtained in other m.tastatic sites such as the *** tool is required in those patients to achieve m.re local control of the *** groups in peritoneal surgery continue to use HIPEC in their procedures,using other agents than oxaliplatin for peritoneal cavity infusion,such as m.tom.cin *** patients present with com.lex surgical issues to m.nage,and consequently a large burden of com.lications has to be ***,identifying patients who will benefit from.CRS with or without HIPEC would be of great interest.

Shear velocity criterion for incipient m.tion of sedim.nt

The prediction of incipient m.tion has had great im.ortance to the theory of sedim.nt transport. The m.st com.only used m.thods are based on the concept of critical shear stress and em.loy an approach similar, or identical, to the Shields diagram. An alternative m.thod that uses the m.vability num.er, defined as the ratio of the shear velocity to the particle＇s settling velocity, was em.loyed in this study. A large am.unt of experim.ntal data were used to develop an em.irical incipient m.tion criterion based on the m.vability num.er. It is shown that this approach can provide a simple and accurate m.thod of com.uting the threshold condition for sedim.nt m.tion.

Com.ost Input Effect on Dryland Wheat and Forage Yields and Soil Quality

Organic agricultural system. rely on organic am.ndm.nts to achieve crop fertility requirem.nts, and weed control m.st be achieved without synthetic herbicides. Our obj.ctive was to determ.ne the crop yield and soil quality as affected by a transition from.grass to dryland organic agriculture in the Central Great Plains of North Am.rica. This study evaluated three beef feedlot com.ost(BFC)treatm.nts in 2010–2015 following biennial application rates: 0(control), 22.9, and 108.7 t ha^(-1) on two dryland organic cropping system.: a wheat(Triticum.aestivum.-fallow(WF) rotation harvested for grain and a triticale(Triticosecale)/pea(Pisum.sativum.-fallow(T/P-F) rotation harvested for forage. The triticale + pea biom.ss responded positively to the 108.7-t ha^(-1) BFC treatm.nt,but not the 22.9-t ha^(-1) BFC treatm.nt. The wheat biom.ss was not affected by BFC addition, but biom.ss N content *** feedlot com.ost input did not increase wheat grain yields, but had a positive effect on wheat grain Zn content. Soil total C and N contents increased with the rate of 108.7 t ha^(-1) BFC after three applications, but not with 22.9 t ha^(-1) BFC. Soil enzym. activities associated with N and C cycling responded positively to the 108.7-t ha^(-1) BFC treatm.nt. Saturated salts were high in the soil receiving 108.7 t ha^(-1) of BFC, but did not affect crop yields. These results showed that BFC was effective in enhancing forage yields, wheat grain quality, and soil C and N, as well as specific m.crobial enzym.s im.ortant for nutrient cycling. However, the large rates of BFC necessary to elicit these positive responses did not increase grain yields, and resulted in an excessive buildup of soil P.
