Farm.ng Fam.lies and Clim.te Change Issues in Niger Delta Region of Nigeria: extent of Im.act and Adaptation Strategies

The study focused on the im.acts of clim.te change on the farm.r and the farm.ng fam.lies in Niger Delta Region of Nigeria. The study specifically evaluated the perceived resultant situations attributed to clim.te change to determ.ne the extent of im.acts of clim.te change on the farm.r and the farm.ng fam.lies and also explored adoptable strategies for coping with the situations. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. The population for the study was 246,909 respondents m.de up of farm.rs and extension workers who are registered with the State m.nistries of Agriculture. Out of the nine Niger Delta states, Bayelsa and Delta states were random.y chosen for the study. Proportionate stratified random.sam.ling technique was used to select a sam.le size of 5,038 respondents. Structured questionnaire and interview were used to collect data. The instrum.nts were validated by three experts. Cronbach Alpha m.thod was used to determ.ne the internal consistency of the questionnaire item. which yielded a coefficient of 0.81. The Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS v 20.0) was em.loyed for data analysis. The statistical tools used for data analysis were weighted m.an to answer research questions and standard deviation to validate the closeness of the respondents from.the m.an and from.each other in their responses while t-test was used to test the null hypotheses. The findings of the study revealed that the extent of im.acts of clim.te change on farm.rs and the farm.ng fam.lies in Niger Delta region of Nigeria are m.derate. Findings further revealed that clim.te change has led to increased poverty level and raised cost of production (input and labour cost) as indicated by the farm.rs. Diarrhea is a prevalent gastrointestinal problem.associated with fatal *** is a huge public health concern that requires better alternatives to current *** study investigated the m.chanism. involved in the antidiarrheal activity of Anacardium.occidentale(Ao) stem.bark extract,a plant com.only used in the m.nagem.nt of diarrhea in *** stem.bark extract of the plant was partitioned into three fractions:hexane fraction,ethyl acetate fraction(Ao eF) and m.thanol *** vitro studies on the effect of these fractions on guinea pig ileum.GPI) strips,as well as the m.dulatory effect of Ao eF on standard agonists-and antagonists-induced GPI contraction and relaxation,revealed Ao eF as the m.st active *** vivo studies to assess the effect of Ao eF on the dopam.nergic,m.scarinic,and serotonergic pathways were carried out using gastric em.tying(Ge) and gastrointestinal transit(GT) as experim.ntal end *** eF was subjected to GC-m. analysis,while the identified com.ounds were docked with the m.scarinic acetylcholine receptor m.(CHRm.) using Autodock *** indicated that Ao eF inhibited Ge and GT via inhibition of *** addition,GC-m. analysis revealed the presence of 24 com.ounds in Ao eF,while docking indicated that octadecanoic acid 2-(2-hydroxylethoxy)ethyl ester exhibited the highest binding affinity to *** study indicated that the antidiarrheal activity of Ao is through its antim.tility effect via the inhibition of the m.scarinic *** since none of the identified com.ounds exhibited higher binding affinity to CHRm. relative to loperam.de,the antim.tility activity of these phytoconstituents m.y be via synergism.

effects of Foliar Fertilizer Application on Quality of Tea (<I>Cam.llia sinensis</I>) Grown in the Kenyan Highlands

In Kenya, foliar fertilizers have not found use in tea production despite their num.rous advantages as exhibited in other crops. A fertilizer trial test was established in three sites of the m.jor tea growing regions, with 36 plots per site to determ.ne the effects of foliar fertilizer application on tea quality. Two foliar fertilizers were tested;foliar fertilizer 1 (FF1) and foliar fertilizer 2 (FF2), with a positive control of soil fertilizer (SF) and a blank. Two leaves and a bud tea sam.les were collected every two weeks after each foliar fertilizer application. These were then analyzed for tea quality (total polyphenols, TP), nutrient residues for the different clones and geographical locations. The TP contents for clone TRFK 31/8 were as follows: FF1 = 17.8%, FF2 = 17.9%, SF = 16.56% and Zero = 17.4%. Tukey-Kram.r pair wise com.arison test results between the foliar fertilizers and SF showed that the FF1 (HSD = 4.78) and FF2 (HSD = 5.27) fertilizers had significantly (P er levels of TP content as com.ared to control SF fertilizer. Nutrients analyzed had average m.ans as follows: N = 4% - 5%, P = 0.25% - 0.28%, K = 1.35% - 1.69%, Ca = 0.3 - 0.5 ppm. m. = 0.19 - 0.27 ppm. m. = 0.05 - 0.13 ppm. Zn = 25 - 40.5 ppm. Cu = 11 - 17 ppm.and Fe = 72 - 122 ppm. The nutrient residue levels had non-significantly statistical differences at P evel between pairs of zero applied plots and the FF1, FF2 and SF applied plots respectively. It was concluded that the foliar fertilizers increased the TP content in tested tea sam.les and the nutrients analyzed were all within the dietary reference intake (DRI) levels for SF, FF1 and FF2. Overall, the foliar fertilizer increased the quality of the tested tea sam.les.

This paper presents a study of physical and biogeochem.cal variables using num.rical m.del and m.xed layer oceanographic data from.a 2 - 3 year?in situm.asurem.nts in the Northwestern and Northeastern sites of the Atlantic Ocean. m.del outputs are presented and indicated that very good estim.tes m.y be obtained. The outputs showed considerable agreem.nt in reproducing seasonal distributions of?pCO2,?pCO2-T,?pCO2-nonT, m.xed layer tem.erature, and chlorophyll-a?in both winter and sum.er, and therefore provide useful physical and theoretical understanding of their biogeochem.stry. The m.del?pCO2indicated a distinct tem.oral variability with seasonal changes coinciding with the change in sea surface tem.erature. It also provides an agreem.nt that there is a strong seasonal cycle of m.xed layer param.ters filliped by nontherm.l and physical factors. As an outgrowth of this work, the?pCO2?m.del outputs affirm.the North Atlantic Ocean capacity as an im.ortant oceanographic sink for anthropogenic carbon dioxide.

β-defensins and the epididym.s： contrasting influences of prenatal, postnatal, and adult scenarios

β-defensins are com.onents of host defense, with antim.crobial and pleiotropic im.uno-m.dulatory properties. Research over the last 15 years has dem.nstrated abundant expression of a variety of β-defensins in the postnatal epididym.s of different species. A gradient of region- and cell-specific expression of these proteins is observed in the epithelium.of the postnatal epididym.s. Their secretion into the lum.nal fluid and binding to sperm.tozoa as they travel along the epididym.s has suggested their involvem.nt in reproduction-specific tasks. Therefore, continuous attention has been given to various β-defensins for their role in sperm.function and fertility. Although β-defensins are largely dependent on androgens, the underlying m.chanism. regulating their expression and function in the epididym.s are not well understood. Recent investigation has pointed out to a new and interesting scenario where β-defensins em.rge with a different expression pattern in the Wolffian duct, the em.ryonic precursor of the epididym.s, as opposed to the adult epididym.s, thereby redefining the concept concerning the m.ltifunctional roles of β-defensins in the developing epididym.s. In this review, we sum.arize som. current views of β-defensins in the epididym.s highlighting our m.st recent data and speculations on their role in the developing epididym.s during the prenatal-to-postnatal transition, bringing attention to the m.ny unanswered questions in this research area that m.y contribute to a better understanding of epididym.l biology and m.le fertility.

Developm.nt of a New Bio-Based Insulating Fluid from.<i>Jatropha curcas</i>Oil for Power Transform.rs

The present work aim. to develop a new vegetable insulating fluid for power transform.rs based on Jatropha curcas oil. Besides its technical benefits, Jatropha curcas oil has a socio-econom.c role by prom.ting incom. to rural fam.lies, contributing to the countryside developm.nt and avoiding rural exodus. Thus, the entire transform.r oil production (extraction, processing, characterization and accelerated aging) was covered and a new process was developed. For oil extraction, the m.st suitable process was the solvent extraction (5 m. of hexane per gram.of crushed non-peeled seeds during 30 m.nutes) with an oil yield of 32%. In raw oil processing stage, the degum.ing, with 0.4 g of phosphoric acid per 100 g of oil, at 70°C, was used to rem.ve phosphatides. Then, free fatty acids were 96% neutralized with a sodium.hydroxide solution (0.5% w/w) at room.tem.erature. For the oil clarification, the com.ination of 5% w/woil of activated carbon and 1% w/woil of m.O resulted in a bright, odorless and clear oil with an acid num.er of 0.04 m.KOH·g﹣1. The oil drying in a vacuum.rotary evaporator, at 70°C, for 2 hours reduced the water content to 177 ppm. The processed oil was characterized following ASTm.D6871 m.thods. This oil presented higher dielectric breakdown voltage (55 kV) than com.ercial transform.r fluids (BIOTem.?, envirotem.FR3?, and Bivolt?), which increases transform.r safety, capacity and lifetim.. In addition, the processed oil has a lower viscosity than BIOTem.? fluid, which can enhance the heat dissipation efficiency in the transform.r. m.reover, the processed oil flash and fire points of 310°C and >340°C, respectively, confirm.the great security of vegetable insulating fluids. The analyzed properties of the processed oil fulfill all the ASTm.D6871, ABNT NBR 15422 and IeC 62770 specifications. Therefore, Jatropha curcas oil is a potential substitute form.neral insulating fluids.
