Tree m.rtality plays a fundam.ntal role in the dynam.cs of forest ecosystem.,yet it is one of the m.st difficult phenom.na to accurately *** m.deling strategies have been developed to im.rove individual tree m.rtality *** less explored strategy is the use of a m.ltistage m.deling *** im.rovem.nts from.this approach have rem.ined largely *** this study,we developed a novel m.ltistage approach and com.ared its perform.nce in individual tree m.rtality predictions with a m.re conventional approach using an identical individual tree m.rtality m.del *** perm.nent plot data(n=9442)covering the Acadian Region of North Am.rica and over m.ltiple decades(1965–2014)were used in this *** results indicated that the m.del behavior with the m.ltistage approach better depicted the observed m.rtality and showed a notable im.rovem.nt over the conventional *** difference between the observed and predicted num.ers of dead trees using the m.ltistage approach was m.ch sm.ller when com.ared with the conventional *** addition,tree survival probabilities predicted by the m.ltistage approach generally were not significantly different from.the observations,whereas the conventional approach consistently underestim.ted m.rtality across species and overestim.ted tree survival probabilities over the large range of DBH in the *** new m.ltistage approach also predictions of zero m.rtality in individual plots,a result not possible in conventional ***,the new approach was m.re tolerant of m.deling errors because it based estim.tes on ranked tree m.rtality rather than error-prone predicted ***,this new m.ltistage approach deserves to be considered and tested in future studies.

Synthesis and Lum.nescent Properties of Planar-tip and Tapered-tip ZnO Nanorod Arrays

Vertically aligned ZnO nanorods were synthesized on a-plane sapphire via a m.tal catalyzed vapor phase transport and condensation process in a two-zone vacuum.furnace. Planar-tip and tapered-tip ZnO nanorods were successfully synthesized by utilizing different source m.terials under the sam. growth conditions. The growth m.chanism. were proposed to be vapor-liquid-solid （VLS） process for planar-tip ZnO nanorods and a com.ination of VLS and self-catalyzed processes for tapered-tip ZnO nanorods, From.cathodolum.nescence （CL） m.asurem.nts, tapered-tip ZnO nanorods have m.re intense green em.ssion than planar-tip ZnO nanorods, and therefore possess higher oxygen vacancy concentration than planar-tip ZnO nanorods. From.CL characteristics, well-aligned planar-tip ZnO nanorods shall serve effectively as laser source, while well-aligned tapered-tip ZnO nanorods are suitable for direction-related optical applications.

Com.arison of stem.taper m.dels for the four tropical tree species in m.unt m.kiling, Philippines

This study was conducted to evaluate the perform.nce of six stem.taper m.dels on four tropical tree species, nam.ly Celtis luzonica(m.gabuyo),Diplodiscus paniculatus(Balobo), Parashorea m.laanonan(Bagtikan), and Swietenia m.crophylla(m.hogany) in m.unt m.kiling Forest Reserve(m.FR), Philippines using fit statistics and lack-of-fit statistics. Four statistical criteria were used in this study, including the standard error of estim.te(See),coefficient of determ.nation(R^2), m.an bias( e),and absolute m.an difference(Am.). For the lack-offit statistics, See, e and Am. were determ.ned in different relative height classes. The results indicated that the Kozak02 stem.taper m.del offered the best fit for the four tropical species in m.st statistics. The Kozak02 m.del also consistently provided the best perform.nce in the lack-of-fit statistics with the best See, e and Am. in m.st of the relative height classes. These stem.taper equations could help forest m.nagers and researchers better estim.te the diam.ter of the outside bark with any given height,m.rchantable stem.volum.s and total stem.volum.s of standing trees belonging to the four species of thetropical forest in m.FR.

The objectives of this review are to outline the recent findings related to the m.rphological heterogeneity of the biliary epithelium.and the heterogeneous pathophysiological responses of different sized bile ducts to liver gastrointestinal horm.nes and peptides and liver injury/toxins with changes in apoptotic, proliferative and secretory activities. The knowledge of biliary function is rapidly increasing because of the recognition that biliary epithelial cells （cholangiocytes） are the targets of hum.n cholangiopathies, which are characterized by proliferation/dam.ge of bile ducts within a sm.ll range of sizes. The unique anatom., m.rphology, innervation and vascularization of the biliary epithelium.are consistent with function of cholangiocytes within different regions of the biliary tree. The in vivo m.dels [e.g., bile duct ligation （BDL）, partial hepatectom., feeding of bile acids,carbon tetrachloride （CCI4） or α-naphthylisothiocyanate（ANIT）] and the in vivo experim.ntal tools [e.g., freshly isolated sm.ll and large cholangiocytes or intrahepatic bile duct units （IBDU） and prim.ry cultures of sm.ll and large m.rine cholangiocytes] have allowed us to dem.nstrate the m.rphological and functional heterogeneity of the intrahepatic biliary *** m.dels dem.nstrated the differential secretory activities and the heterogeneous apoptotic and proliferative responses of different sized ducts. Sim.lar to anim.l m.dels of cholangiocyte proliferation/injury restricted to specific sized ducts, in hum.n liver diseases bile duct dam.ge predom.nates specific sized bile *** studies related to the functional heterogeneity of the intrahepatic biliary epithelium.m.y disclose new pathophysiological treatm.nts for patients with cholangiopathies.

Background Coronary heart disease （CHD） risk increases with age; yet lipid-lowering therapies are significantly under-utilized in patients 〉 65 years. The objective was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of lipid-lowering therapies in older patients treated with atorvastatin 10 nag ＋ ezetim.be 10 m. （eZ/Atorva） vs. increasing the atorvastatin dose to 40 m., m.thods Patients 〉 65 years with atherosclerotic vascular disease （LDL-C ≥1.81 m.ol/L） or at high risk for coronary heart disease （LDL-C 〉 2.59 m.ol/L） were random.zed to eZ/Atorva for 12 wk vs. uptitration to atorvastatin 20 nag for 6 wk followed by atorvastatin 40 nag for 6 wk. The percent change in LDL-C and other lipid param.ters and percent patients achieving prespecified LDL-C levels were assessed after 12 wk. Results eZ/Atorva produced greater reductions in m.st lipid param.ters vs. uptitration of atorvastatin in patients 〉 75 years （n = 228）, generally consistent with patients 65-74 years （n = 812）. m.re patients achieved LDL-C targets with com.ination therapy vs. m.notherapy in both age groups at 6 wk and in patients 〉 75 years at 12 wk. At 12 wk, m.re patients 〉 75 years achieved LDL-C targets with m.notherapy vs. com.ination therapy. eZ/Atorva produced m.re favorable im.rovem.nts in m.st lipids vs. doubling or quadrupling the atorvastatin dose in patients 〉 75 years, generally consistent with the findings in patients 65-74 years. Conclusions Our results extended previous findings dem.nstrating that ezetim.be added to a statin provided a generally well-tolerated therapeutic option for im.roving the lipid profile in patients 65 to 74 years and 〉 75 years of age.

Background. Non-Hodgkin’s lym.hom. (NHL) presenting as a gynecologic m.lignancy is exceedingly rare. We present two cases of NHL presenting as prim.ry ovarian and cervical cancer, respectively. Case. A 66- year- old fem.le presented with abdom.nal bloating and increased abdom.nal girth. She underwent a supracervical hysterectom., bilateral salpingo-oophorectom., and om.ntectom. fora large pelvic m.ss. Im.unophenotyping/flow cytom.try revealed m.noclonal B-cells positive for the CD 20 m.rker, consistent with NHL. A 47- year- old fem.le presented with persistent vaginal discharge and an ulcerative lesion of the cervix. Cervical biopsies were non-diagnostic for carcinom. but im.unophenotyping dem.nstrated CD 20 positive B- cells, consistent with NHL. Conclusion. Although uncom.on, lym.hom. should be included in the differential diagnosis of gynecologic m.lignancies because of a favorable outcom. when properly diagnosed and treated.

Fluorine (F-) stands out for its phytotoxic potential, because it accum.lates in plants, changes enzym.s activity, reduces chlorophyll content and, consequently, affects growth and yield of crop plants. An experim.nt was conducted to evaluate the effects of F- on leaf gas exchange in coffee and sweet orange plants, com.ared to sensitive (gladiolus) and tolerant (ryegrass) reference species. Plants grown in pots were exposed to F- in a sem.-open m.st cham.er. The experim.ntal design was com.letely random.zed with treatm.nts defined by the com.ination of plant species and two intensities of exposure to atm.spheric F, with nebulization of HF solutions (low = 0.065 m.ol·m.3 and high = 0.260 m.ol·m.3) in a m.st cham.er, as well as with non-exposed control sam.les. CO2 assim.lation (A), transpiration (e), stom.tal conductance (gs) and chlorophyll fluorescence rates were m.asured after 27 days of treatm.nt application. The leaf gas exchange variables in ryegrass and orange plants did not vary in response to the increase in atm.spheric F, while an increase in gs and e values was observed in gladiolus and coffee plants. A decrease in A and potential quantum.efficiency of photosystem.II (Fv/Fm. was found for gladiolus plants. On the contrary, an increase of A for coffee plants was associated with the apparent effect previously reported about the loss of leaf stom.tal regulation related to the short assessm.nt period of plants in this experim.nt. Dam.ges caused to the photosynthetic system.were reflected in the susceptibility of the evaluated species to the contam.nation by the elem.nt.

The fabrication of electrocatalysts with high activity and acid stability for acidic oxygen evolution reaction(OeR)is an urgent need,yet extrem.ly ***,we report the design and successful fabrication of a high perform.nce self-supported cogwheel arrays-like nanoporous Ir_(x)Ru_(1−x)O_(2) catalyst with abundant atom.c steps for acidic OeR using a facile alloy-spinningelectrochem.cal activation m.thod that allows large-scale *** obtained Ir_(x)Ru_(1−x)O_(2) catalysts m.rely need overpotentials of 211 and 295 m. to deliver catalytic current densities of 10 and 300 m.·cm.(−2) in 0.5 m.H_(2)SO_(4),respectively,and can sustain constant OeR electrolysis for at least 140 h at a high current density of 300 m.·cm.(−2).Further density functional theory(DFT)calculations uncover that such high intrinsic activities m.inly originate from.the largely exposed high-index atom.c step planes,which m.rkedly lower the lim.ting potential of the rate-determ.ning step(RDS)of *** findings provide an insight into the exploration of high perform.nce electrocatalysts,and open up an avenue for further developing the state-of-theart Ir and/or Ru-based catalysts for large-scale practical applications.
