Ornamental fl.w.rs commonly grown in ttrban gardens and parks can be of value to fl.w.r-visiting insects. However, there is huge variation in the number of insects attracted among plant varieties. In this study, we quantified the insect attractiveness of 79 varieties in full bloom being grown in a public urban garden that is popular due to its beautiful fl.w.rs and other attractions. The results showed very clearly that most varieties （77%, n = 61） were either poorly attractive or completely unattractive to insect fl.w.r visitors. Several varieties （19%, n = 15） were moderately attractive, but very few （4%, n = 3） were highly attractive. Closer examination of Dahlia varieties showed that ＂open＂ fl.w.red forms were approximately 20 times more attractive than ＂closed＂ fl.w.red forms. These results strongly suggest that there is a great potential for making urban parks and gardens considerably more bee- and insect-friendly by selecting appropriate varieties.

The feed additive ractopamine hydrochloride was fortified at four concentrations into batch vials containing soils that differed in both biological activity and organic matter（OM）.Sampling of the liquid layer for 14 days demonstrated that ractopamine rapidly dissipated from the liquid layer. less than 20% of the fortified dose remained in the liquid layer after 4 hr,and recoveries of dosed ractopamine ranged from 8 to 18% in the liquid layer at 336 hr. Sorption to soil.w.s the major fate for ractopamine in soil.w.ter systems, i.e., 42%–51% of the dose at14 days. The major portion of the sorbed fraction was comprised of non-extractables; a smaller fraction of the sorbed dose was extracted into water and acetone, portions which would be potentially mobile in the environment. Partitioning coefficients for all soils suggested strong sorption of ractopamine to soil.w.ich is governed by hydrophobic interactions and cation exchange complexes within the soil OM. Ractopamine degradation was observed, but to mostly non-polar compounds which had a higher potential than ractopamine to sorb to soil. The formation of volatiles was also suggested. Therefore, despite rapid and extensive soil sorption,these studies indicated a portion of ractopamine, present in manures used to fertilize soils,may be mobile in the environment via water-borne events.

The present study focuses on the relationship of hardness with grain size for commercially pure titanium （CpTi） and ultra fine grained titanium （UFG-Ti） produced by equal channel angular process （ECAP） of Cp-Ti）.Vickers and Knoop indentations of UFG-Ti at different loads was ～2.5 times harder than those of *** diffraction （XRD） analysis showed peak broadening in UFG-Ti due to reduced grain size and micro-lattice *** electron microscopy （SEM） revealed that ECAP had reduced the grain size of Cp-Ti by ～10 *** statistics showed UFG-Ti with l.w.r dispersion in hardness values compare to Cp-Ti indicating a more uniform microstructure.

BACKGROUND The increased prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)among patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes suggests a causal link between these diseases,potentially involving the effect of hyperglycemia to disrupt intestinal barrier *** To investigate whether the deleterious impact of diabetes on the intestinal barrier is associated with increased IBD severity in a murine model of colitis in mice with and without diet-induced *** Mice were fed chow or a high-fat diet and subsequently received streptozotocin to induce diabetic-range *** weeks later,dextran sodium sulfate was given to induce *** select experiments,a subset of diabetic mice was treated with the antidiabetic drug dapagliflozin prior to colitis *** included both clinical and histological measures of colitis activity as well as histochemical markers of colonic epithelial barrier *** In mice given a high-fat diet,but not chow-fed animals,diabetes was associated with significantly increased clinical colitis activity and histopathologic markers of disease *** was also associated with a decrease in key components that regulate colonic epithelial barrier integrity(colonic mucin layer content and epithelial tight junction proteins)in diet-induced obese *** of these effects of diabetes in diet-induced obese mice was ameliorated by restoring *** In obese mice,diabetes worsened clinical and pathologic outcomes of colitis via mechanisms that are reversible with treatment of ***-induced intestinal barrier dysfunction offers a plausible mechanism linking diabetes to increased colitis *** findings suggest that effective diabetes management may decrease the clinical severity of IBD.

Oropharyngeal cancer accounts for approximately 2.8% of newly cancer cases. Although classically a tobacco related disease, most cases today are related to infection with human papilloma virus(HPV) and present with locally advanced tumors. HPV related tumors have been recognized as a molecularly distinct entity with higher response rates to therapy, l.w.r rates of relapse, and improved overall survival. Treatment of oropharyngeal cancer entails a multi-disciplinary approach with concomitant chemoradiation. The role of induction chemotherapy in locally advanced tumors continues to be controversial however large studies have demonstrated no difference in survival or time to treatment failure. Surgical approaches may be employed with l.w.volume oropharyngeal cancers and with development new endoscopic tools, more tumors are able to be resected via an endoscopic approach. Given advances in the understanding of HPV related oropharyngeal cancer, ongoing research is looking at ways to minimize toxicities via de-intensification of therapy. Unfortunately, some patients develop recurrent or metastatic disease. Novel therapeutics are currently being investigated for this patient population including immunotherapeutics. This review discusses the current understanding of the pathogenesis of oropharyngeal cancer and treatment. we also discuss emerging areas of research as it pertains to de-intensification as well novel therapeutics for the management of metastatic disease.

Sequence assembling is an important step for bioinformatics *** the help of next generation sequencing(NGS)technology,high throughput DNA fragment(reads)can be randomly sampled from DNA or RNA molecular ***,as the positions of reads being sampled are unknown,assembling process is required for combining overlapped reads to reconstruct the original DNA or RNA *** with traditional Sanger sequencing methods,although the throughput of NGS reads increases,the read length is shorter and the error rate is *** introduces several problems in ***,paired-end reads instead of single-end reads can be sampled which contain more *** existing assemblers cannot fully utilize this information and fails to assemble longer *** this article,we will revisit the major problems of assembling NGS reads on genomic,transcriptomic,metagenomic and metatranscriptomic *** will also describe our IDBA package for solving these *** package has adopted several novel ideas in assembling,including using multiple k,local assembling and progressive depth *** with existence assemblers,IDBA has better performance on many simulated and real sequencing datasets.

Rare earth elements have been used for 30 years in Chinese agriculture to improve growth and yield. Numerous scientific studies have shown improvements in physiology, mineral nutrition, and growth, though deleterious effects may also occur. Very few studies have been performed on woody species. we exponentially fertilized one-year old black walnut （Juglans nigra l.） seedlings with 0, 0.1, 1, 10, or 100 mg lanthanum （la） and 800 mg nitrogen （N） as NaNO3, （NH4）2SO4, NH4NO3, or no N. One month foll.w.ng final fertilization, growth, mineral nutrition, photosynthesis, chlorophyll, and nitrate reductase activity were assessed. Plants fertilized with the highest level of la had reduced fine root growth, concentrations of magnesium, calcium, nickel, and phosphorus, photosynthesis levels, and chlorophyll a content. Foliar la concentration showed an interaction effect, with three to four times greater concentration in plants fed at 100 mg la to those given 10 mg la for （NH4）2SO4 and NHaNO3 treatments. The results suggested no beneficial effects of la addition at levels used in this study and interactions between N source and la levels did not have an important impact on the growth, mineral nutrition, or physiology of black walnut seedlings.

Recent climate change is known to affect the distribution of a number of insect species,resulting in a modification of their range *** newly colonized areas,novel interactions become apparent between expanding and endemic species sharing the same *** pine processionary moth is a highly damaging pine defoliator,extending its range northwards and upwards in response to winter *** expansion in the Alps has resulted in an invasion into the range of the Spanish moon moth,a red listed species developing on Scots *** processionary moth larvae develop during winter,preceding those of the moon moth,which hatch in late *** pine trees planted in a clonal design,we experimentally tested the effect of previous winter defoliation by pine processionary moth larvae upon the survival and development of moon moth *** on foliage of heavily defoliated trees(>50%)resulted in a significant increase in the development time of moon moth larvae and a decrease in relative growth rate compared to feeding on foliage of undefoliated *** weight of pupae also decreased when larvae were fed with foliage of defoliated trees,and might,therefore,affect imago perfor***,l.w.r defoliation degrees did not result in significant differences in larval performances compared to the *** a high degree of defoliation by pine processionary moth is to be expected during the colonization phase,its arrival in subalpine pine stands might affect the populations of the endangered moon moth .
