Background Studies on Mass drug administration(MDA)in Ghana targeting various diseases,have mostly focused on factors that affect coverage and compliance to MDA with limited focus on evidence regarding awareness and community perception of the ***,this study sought to provide empirical evidence on the knowledge of onchocerciasis,and awareness of and participation in the MDA among community *** A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted from August to October 2019 in communities within the Atwima Nwabiagya North District,*** was collected from 2,008 *** and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to measure the associations between socio-demographics,having heard of onchocerciasis and its prevention,and levels of awareness of the MDA *** A total of 1268 respondents(63.2%)were aware of the MDA *** majority ofMost respondents(74.4%)were of the view that the information given about the program was not enough and 45.4%of the respondents had no idea about the relevance of the MDA *** who had ever heard about onchocerciasis prevention and persons who had previously participated in the MDA program were more likely to be aware of the MDA program during implementation(AOR=2.32;95%CI 1.79-3.01 and AOR=9.31;95%CI 7.06-12.26,respectively).Conclusions We observed a significant association between being aware of MDA campaigns and knowledge of onchocerciasis and its preventive methods,and participation in previous MDA *** recommend intensification and improvement of prevention campaigns regarding the onchocerciasis MDA program as key to ensuring increased MDA program participation.

Males as Partners in Family Planning Service Uptake in Ghana: A Descriptive Cross-Sectional Survey

Background: Family planning is an efficient and effective intervention that results in quick benefits for the whole family socio-economically. Differences exist in the rate of contraceptive use between male and female and male involvement of service uptake in Ghana. The objective of this study was to explore male direct involvement and or support to their partners in family planning service uptake. Methods: The study used a descriptive cross-sectional survey to sample 384 men of reproductive age (18 - 45 year) using cluster sampling to enlist participants from within the Suame Magazine light Industrial area in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Data was analyzed descriptively using SPSS version 16. Results: Men showed very high knowledge (90%) about what constitutes Family Planning, with moderate level of involvement both active and passive involvement (56%) though only a few (38.9%) were presently adopting or using modern contraceptive. The study rather found only 14% (55) males were willing to be solely responsible and actively involved in Family Planning service. Family Planning services did not adequately meet the needs of men with the services centers remaining unavailable in the study area. Conclusion: The extent of male involvement in family planning programmes is marginally above average. Males showed appreciable knowledge of family planning options though misconceptions continued to exist. A more couple-oriented approach to family planning is needed including recruiting males as family planning providers, offering more family planning counseling for couples, and promoting female-oriented methods with men and vice versa.

Background:Malaria is one of the most challenging public health concerns in the developing *** address its impact in endemic regions,several interventions are implemented by *** Affordable Medicine Facility-malaria(AMFm)is an example of such *** activities include communication interventions to enhance the knowledge of caregivers of children under five years,licensed chemical sellers(LCS)and prescribers on malaria management with artemisinin-based combination therapy(ACT).This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the AMFm activities on malaria among targeted groups in two rural communities in ***:A communication intervention study was conducted in the Asante-Akim North and South Districts of *** cross-sectional pre and post surveys were *** malaria messages were designed and used to develop the information,education and communication(IEC)tools for the *** the aid of posters and flipcharts developed by our study,community health workers(CHWs),prescribers,and licenced chemical sellers provided proper counselling to clients on malaria *** CHWs and community based volunteers educated caregivers of children under five years on malaria management at their homes and at public gatherings such as churches,mosques,***-square tests and logistic regression were run to determine associations and control for demographic differences ***:There was significantly high exposure to malaria/ACT interventions in the intervention district than in the comparison district(OR=16.02;95%CI=7.88–32.55)and same for malaria/ACT-related knowledge(OR=3.63;95%CI=2.52–5.23).The participants in the intervention district were also more knowledgeable about correct administration of dispersible drug for children<5 years than their counterparts in the unexposed ***:Our data show that targeted interventions improve malaria based competences in rural commun

Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Syphilis Prevalence and Risk Factors among Migrant Workers in Konongo, Ghana

Migrant workers, particularly gold mining workers, have been identified as a group at risk for HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STI). A cross-sectional study was undertaken on the correlates of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and syphilis infections in a sample of migrants (Ghanaian citizens [156] and non-Ghanaian citizens [8]) working in a gold mining centres in Konongo, Ghana. The study was conducted between the months of January 2013 to December 2013. Of a total of 600 eligible migrant workers, only 164 (27.33%;males 114, females 50) of the eligible migrants took part in the study. Subjects voluntarily completed a risk-factor questionnaire and provided blood specimen for testing for the presence of antibodies to HIV and Treponema pallidum, the causative agent of syphilis. These data were analyzed using both univariate and multivariate techniques. The median age of the participants was 29.0 years (range 18 - 62 years). Of the 164 migrant workers tested, HIV and syphilis seroprevalence were 6.7% and 3.7% respectively. On multivariate analysis, the independent determinants for HIV infection were being female [odds ratio (OR) 2.94;95% confidence interval (95% CI 0.86 - 10.0);unmarried (OR 10.13;95% CI 1.2 - 81.09);drug use (OR 3.76;95% CI 0.38 - 36.3);and blood transfusion (OR 2.45;95% CI 0.27 - 22.37). Similarly, on multivariate analysis, the independent determinants for syphilis infection were having concurrent sexual partners (OR 2.16;95% CI 0.38 - 12.12);and blood transfusion (OR 5.07;95% CI 0.51 - 50.37). Consistent with similar studies worldwide, our results suggest high prevalence of HIV and syphilis infections among migrant workers who work in gold mining centres in Ghana.

Family planning is known to prevent maternal deaths, but some social norms, limited supplies and inconsistent use makes this difficult to achieve in most low- and middle-income countries. In spite of the high fertility levels in most sub-Saharan African countries and the potential economic benefits of family planning, its patronage remains very low in the sub-region. This study was with the objective of identifying the levels of awareness, utilization, access to and perceptions about family planning and contraception. A cross-sectional study design was used for the study, with data collected from multiple sources using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Relevant findings included a marked disconnect between family planning/contraceptive knowledge and use. The pills and injectables were the most frequently used, but females in the study population poorly patronised emergency contraception. Supplies of most family planning methods were found to be health facility based, requiring clients to have to necessarily go there for services. Some respondents harboured perceptions that family planning was the responsibility of females alone and that it fuelled promiscuity among female users. Recommendations made include ensuring that health facilities had adequate staff and expertise to provide facility-based family planning services and also to disabuse the minds of community members of the negative perceptions towards family planning.
