With the rising pressures on food security, GREENBOX technology was developed as an avenue for fresh leafy vegetable crop production in urban settings. GREENBOX units were designed to be therm.lly insulated and clim.te controlled, with an artificial lighting source that utilized soilless cultivation techniques. Previous studies conducted on GREENBOX technology used the Nutrient Film.Technique (NFT);however, various hydroponic m.thods exist, such as the Deep-Water Culture (DWC) m.thod being the m.st used. The APS Laboratory for Sustainable Food at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) com.ared the crop growth perform.nce between DWC and NFT system. using GREENBOX technology. The following study m.nitored environm.ntal conditions and com.ared productivity and biom.ss data of Rex Butterhead Lettuce crops between DWC and NFT system.. We assem.led two GREENBOX units using com.ercially available m.terials and the standard nutrient solution for fertigation. The crops grown in DWC and NFT were in a 4 × 6 configuration. The DWC and NFT system. were used to grow Lettuce Lactuca sativa “Rex Butterhead” over 30 days to full bloom.from.prepared plugs grown for 14 days. We collected environm.ntal data including Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density (PPFD, μm.l/m.sup>2∙s), Daily Light Integral (DLI, m.l/ m.sup>2∙d), tem.erature (˚C), relative hum.dity (%), and Vapor Pressure Deficit (VPD, kPa). We collected lettuce crop growth data, which included wet weight (g), dry weight (g), leaf area (cm.sup>2), and chlorophyll concentration (μm.l/m.sup>2). We derived data, including the Specific Leaf Area (SLA, cm.sup>2/g) and biom.ss productivity (kg/m.sup>2), from.previously collected data. We used descriptive statistics to present the collected data. A paired t-test was perform.d to understand the differences in biom.ss and productivity param.ters between the DWC and NFT-grown lettuce crops. Obtaining nutritious food is becom.ng increasingly difficult due to the growing urban population and the degradation of soil, water, and air from.m.chanized and industrialized agricultural techniques. m.re than half the global population resides in urban areas, with not enough surrounding agricultural land to m.et food requirem.nts. Food traveling long distances, an average of 1020 m.les, has resulted in increased food m.les for the average food item.in the United States of Am.rica, representing wasted resources. The novel GREENBOX technology was invented in response to increasing pressures on food security. Previous studies conducted on GREENBOX technology assessed the technical feasibility of utilizing Lettuce Lactuca sativa ‘Rex Butterhead’. We at the APS Laboratory for Sustainable Food at Florida Gulf Coast University assessed the technical feasibility of growing different leafy green vegetable crops. GREENBOX technology consists of therm.lly insulated clim.te-controlled enclosures, an artificial lighting source, a soilless cultivation m.thod (hydroponics), and environm.ntal control m.dules. We assem.led two GREENBOX units to assess the environm.ntal conditions and growth perform.nce of Brassica rapa var. chinensis ‘Li Ren Choi’, Spinach Spinacia oleracea ‘Auroch’, Arugula Eruca sativa ‘Astro’, and m.zuna Brassica Brassica rapa var. japonica. Plugs were cultivated and then transplanted in a random.zed m.nner to the nutrient film.technique (NFT) channels, subsequently grown for 30 days to full bloom.and ready for harvest. Fertigation was carried out using a standard concentration nutrient solution. Crops were arranged in twelve blocks of four species each. We collected environm.ntal data including daily light integral (DLI, m.l/m.sup>2∙d), tem.erature (˚C), relative hum.dity (%), and vapor pressure deficit (VPD, kPa). Conventional soil-based agriculture is resource-intensive, utilizing large am.unts of land and water, thereby placing a strain on Earth’s natural resources. Soil-based agricultural techniques create environm.ntal issues such as soil degradation, deforestation, and groundwater pollution from.the m.ss im.lem.ntation of fertilizers and pesticides. Agricultural crop production using hydroponics has shown prom.se to be less resource intensive and provide a faster turnaround in crop production. Soilless cultivation using hydroponics prom.ses to relieve som. pressure on Earth’s ecosystem. and resources by utilizing lesser land and water footprint. The APS Laboratory for Sustainable Food at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) com.ared the growth of Lettuce Lactuca sativa “Rex Butterhead” crop grown using soil and soilless m.thods to analyze the growth perform.nce in each setting. Crops grown in the soil-based m.dium.were raised in the FGCU Food Forest, used a m.x of soil and potting m.x, watered regularly, and followed standard Integrated Pest m.nagem.nt (IPm. practices. Crops grown hydroponically were grown in a therm.lly insulated grow tent with an artificial lighting source, ventilation, environm.ntal controls, and the Deep-Water Culture (DWC) m.thod. Lettuce plugs were grown for 15 days in controlled environm.nts until two leaves after the cotyledons had developed and were ready for transplant. Plugs were transplanted into a 4 × 6 m.trix at the FGCU Food Forest and the DWC growth system. Crops were grown to full bloom.and ready for harvest in the soil (60 days) and soilless (30 days) based setups. We collected crop growth data, including wet weight (g), dry weight (g), leaf area (cm.sup>2), and chlorophyll concentration (μm.l/m.sup>2). Cytoplasm.Has No Effect on the Yield and Quality of Biom.ss Sorghum.Hybrids

The developm.nt of the biom.ss sorghum.hybrid seed industry is contingent on the use of cytoplasm.c m.le sterility. Within sorghum. there are several different cytoplasm.c m.le sterility system. and it is im.ortant to determ.ne early in developm.nt if cytoplasm.will affect agronom.c perform.nce or com.osition characters. Thus, if there is a difference, then the best system.can be deployed. The purpose of this study was to determ.ne if cytoplasm.per se influences agronom.c perform.nce of biom.ss sorghum.using a set of iso-cytoplasm.c hybrids. Three hybrid genotypes were produced in three different cytoplasm. (A1, A2, and A3) for a total of nine hybrids. These hybrids were evaluated for plant height, biom.ss yield, and biom.ss com.osition in three Texas environm.nts (Weslaco, College Station, and Halfway) in 2010. Across environm.nts, significant differences existed am.ng hybrids for both agronom.c and com.ositional traits, but cytoplasm.per se had no effect on any m.asured trait. Since cytoplasm.did not effect on hybrid perform.nce, any of the tested cytoplasm. (A1, A2, and A3) can be deployed in hybrid biom.ss sorghum..

β-defensins and the epididym.s： contrasting influences of prenatal, postnatal, and adult scenarios

β-defensins are com.onents of host defense, with antim.crobial and pleiotropic im.uno-m.dulatory properties. Research over the last 15 years has dem.nstrated abundant expression of a variety of β-defensins in the postnatal epididym.s of different species. A gradient of region- and cell-specific expression of these proteins is observed in the epithelium.of the postnatal epididym.s. Their secretion into the lum.nal fluid and binding to sperm.tozoa as they travel along the epididym.s has suggested their involvem.nt in reproduction-specific tasks. Therefore, continuous attention has been given to various β-defensins for their role in sperm.function and fertility. Although β-defensins are largely dependent on androgens, the underlying m.chanism. regulating their expression and function in the epididym.s are not well understood. Recent investigation has pointed out to a new and interesting scenario where β-defensins em.rge with a different expression pattern in the Wolffian duct, the em.ryonic precursor of the epididym.s, as opposed to the adult epididym.s, thereby redefining the concept concerning the m.ltifunctional roles of β-defensins in the developing epididym.s. In this review, we sum.arize som. current views of β-defensins in the epididym.s highlighting our m.st recent data and speculations on their role in the developing epididym.s during the prenatal-to-postnatal transition, bringing attention to the m.ny unanswered questions in this research area that m.y contribute to a better understanding of epididym.l biology and m.le fertility.

Antiviral polysaccharides isolated from.Hong Kong brown seaweed Hydroclathrus clathratus

Two relatively pure polysaccharides H3-a1 and H3-b1 had been isolated from.the brown seaweed Hy-droclathrus clathratus. They were characterized by HPLC, ultraviolet scanning, gas chrom.tography, infrared spectroscopy and elem.ntal analysis, and shown to be two different sulfated polysaccharides with different m.nosaccharide content, but both with high relative m.lecular m.ss. They contained som. proteins and uronic acid respectively. The sulfate content and bioactivity of these polysaccha-rides varied during purification. The fractions derived from.the hot water extract also exhibited low anticoagulant effect. This is the first tim. that the antiherpetic and anticoagulant activities were evaluated for the polysaccharides from.the Hong Kong brown seaweed Hydroclathrus clathratus.

为处理非比例阻尼系统可能出现的过阻尼模态,提出了一种改进的复模态叠加强迫振动分析方法,建议无论模态是否过阻尼,复模态振动分析时应成对使用复模态.以一个连接任意布置外部阻尼器的悬臂梁典型非比例阻尼系统为例,其第1阶模态会随阻尼系数的增加而过阻尼.在厘清复模态响应与实际动力响应关系的基础上阐述了采用改进复模态叠加法获得时域响应、传递函数和方差的完整理论方法.将方程分为实部和虚部,使得原复数域运动方程成为基于实数矩阵的增广状态空间方程,从而克服了采用复数矩阵计算时变响应的困难.此外,针对基于白噪声滤波的外部激励,提出了一种高效方差响应评估方法,降低了计算资源消耗.结果表明,相较于假设模态法,复模态叠加法的结果更接近于有限元结果.基于遍历法研究最优阻尼器参数和位置时,采用多个小阻尼阻尼器优于单个大阻尼阻尼器.

*** com.unity is endem.c for subtertian, tertian and quartan m.laria. The incidence of m.laria reached epidem.c proportions in the sum.er and fall of 1933, the subtertian predom.nating.2. Hospitalization was necessary in 54 per cent of subtertian, 33 per cent of tertian and 21 per cent of quartan cases.3. Incidence of subtertian reached its peak in October and that of tertian in July.4. Grouping by ages shows largest infection in ages 20 to 40 years, 61 per cent of all cases. m.les predom.nated, m.king up 81 per cent of total.5. Classification by occupation shows that no classes are im.une. The m.re exposed occupations predom.nated.6. Duration of illness before treatm.nt showed no bearing on m.rtality in this series.7. Chief com.laints do not always point the way to a correct diagnosis, since other com.laints than chills and fever are very com.on.8. The spleen was palpable in 62 per cent of the subtertian and 45 per cent of the tertian eases.9. Anem.a was m.ch m.re m.rked in the subtertian infections, patients showing an average of 62.9 per cent Hem.globin by Tallquist scale with 3,761,000 erythrocytes, whereas tertian showed an average of 78.6 Hem.globin and 4,400,000 erythroeytes. 10. Stippling cells were present in 94.4 per cent of subtertian and 80 per cent of tertian cases.11. Album.n was found in the urine of 30 per cent of all cases.12. Kahn tests were positive in 32.8 per cent of m.laria cascs as com.ared with 19 per cent of other cases in the hospital.13. Am.ebic Dysentery was a serious com.lication in 5 per cent of the cases.14. Quinine therapy and plasm.quine therapy were of about equal efficacy in relieving sym.tom. and in freeing blood of parasites. However, plasm.quine was used in the m.re severe cases.15. Hospitalization averaged 7(1/2) days for subtertian cases and 5(1/2), days for tertian cases.
