A Novel Automatic Classification System Based on Hybrid Unsupervised and Supervised Machine Learning for Electrospun Nanofibers

The manufacturing of nanomaterials by the electrospinning process requires accurate and meticulous inspection of related scanning electron microscope(SEM)images of the electrospun nanofiber,to ensure that no structural defects are *** presence of anomalies prevents practical application of the electrospun nanofibrous material in ***,the automatic monitoring and quality control of nanomaterials is a relevant challenge in the context of Industry *** this paper,a novel automatic classification system for homogenous(anomaly-free)and non-homogenous(with defects)nanofibers is *** inspection procedure aims at avoiding direct processing of the redundant full SEM ***,the image to be analyzed is first partitioned into subimages(nanopatches)that are then used as input to a hybrid unsupervised and supervised machine learning *** the first step,an autoencoder(AE)is trained with unsupervised learning to generate a code representing the input image with a vector of relevant ***,a multilayer perceptron(MLP),trained with supervised learning,uses the extracted features to classify non-homogenous nanofiber(NH-NF)and homogenous nanofiber(H-NF)*** resulting novel AE-MLP system is shown to outperform other standard machine learning models and other recent state-of-the-art techniques,reporting accuracy rate up to92.5%.In addition,the proposed approach leads to model complexity reduction with respect to other deep learning strategies such as convolutional neural networks(CNN).The encouraging performance achieved in this benchmark study can stimulate the application of the proposed scheme in other challenging industrial manufacturing tasks.

Advances in medical decision support systems for diagnosis of acute graft-versus-host disease: molecular and computational intelligence joint approaches

Acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) is a serious systemic complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stemcell transplantation (HSCT) causing considerable morbidity and mortality. Acute GVHD occurs when alloreactivedonor-derived T cells recognize host-recipient antigens as foreign. These trigger a complex multiphase process thatultimately results in apoptotic injury in target organs. The early events leading to GVHD seem to occur very soon,presumably within hours from the graft infusion. Therefore, when the first signs of aGVHD clinically manifest, thedisease has been ongoing for several days at the cellular level, and the inflammatory cytokine cascade is fully ***, it comes as no surprise that progress in treatment based on clinical diagnosis of aGVHD has been limited in the past30 years. It is likely that a pre-emptive strategy using systemic high-dose corticosteroids as early as possible couldimprove the outcome of aGVHD. Due to the deleterious effects of such treatment particularly in terms of infection riskposed by systemic steroid administration in a population that is already immune-suppressed, it is critical to identifybiomarker signatures for approaching this very complex task. Some research groups have begun addressing this issuethrough molecular and proteomic analyses, combining these approaches with computational intelligence techniques,with the specific aim of facilitating the identification of diagnostic biomarkers in aGVHD. In this review, we focus on theaGVHD scenario and on the more recent *** also attempt to give an overview of the classical and noveltechniques proposed as medical decision support system for the diagnosis of GVHD.

Absolute parameters of the three totally-eclipsing W UMa stars NSVS 2443858,NSVS 780649 and V1098 Her

We present the first photometric analysis of three totally-eclipsing W UMa binaries,NS VS2443858,NSVS 780649 and V1098 *** absolute astrophysical parameters of the stellar components were determined by means of Gaia distances and light curve *** results show that:(ⅰ)Two of the systems,NSVS 2443858 and V1098 Her,are of A subtype while the obtained temperature of the secondary component of NSVS 780649 indicates that it is a W-subtype system;(ⅱ)The estimated mass ratios approach the lower limit of the mass ratio assumed by researchers in recent years so our targets could be classified as extreme mass ratio binary(EMRB)systems;(ⅲ)All the systems have deep contact configurations,so they also are deep low mass ratio(DLMR)systems;(ⅳ)The components of our systems are stars of F and G spectral type and undergo total eclipses;(ⅴ)The sum 0.871 M⊙of the component masses of NSVS 780649 is below the mass limit of 1.0-1.2 M⊙assumed for the known contact binary stars.

DZ Lyn:a contact binary with components in poor thermal contact

CCD photometric observations of the short-period eclipsing binary DZ Lyn were obtained during seven nights in March-April 2008 in the B, V, Rc and Ic bands; these observations confirm the short-period （P = 0.378 d） of the system. The presented light curves are analyzed by means of the 2003 version of the Wilson-Devinney （WD） program. A grid of solutions for several fixed values of mass ratio was calculated. The best fitting possible is for a mass ratio of q -- 0.885, a degree of contact f = 0.18 and a low orbital inclination of i = 57.6°. The results show that DZ Lyn is an A-subtype W Ursae Majoris contact binary in poor thermal contact; in fact the difference between the mean temperatures of the components is about 1800 K. The star DZ Lyn seems to be another member of the class of poorly understood close binaries in or near geometrical contact but far from thermal contact. The absolute dimensions are estimated and its dynamical evolution is inferred.

Photometric study and preliminary elements of the low-mass ratio W UMa system ASAS 021209+2708.3

We present CCD B and V light curves,obtained in the year 2006,and a photometric solution of the low-mass ratio contact binary ASAS 021209＋2708.3. With our data we were able to determine six new times of minimum light and refine the orbital period of the system to 0.3181963 *** light curves are analyzed using the 2003 version of the Wilson-Devinney program and the analysis was performed with and without adding a spot on the surface of one star because the light curves appear to exhibit a typical O’Connell effect,with Maximum I brighter than Maximum *** results show that ASAS 021209＋2708.3 may be classified as an A-subtype W Ursae Majoris system with a small mass ratio q=0.1889,a large over-contact degree of f= 0.587,a very small difference between the component temperatures of Δ T=53 K and an orbital inclination of i=81°.It is known that deep（f50%） ,low-mass ratio（q0.25） overcontact binary stars are a very important resource for understanding the phenomena of Blue Straggler/FK Com-type *** formations of Blue Straggler stars and FK Com-type stars are unsolved problems in stellar *** of the possible explanations for their formation is from the coalescence of W UMa-type overcontact binary *** absolute dimensions of ASAS 021209＋2708.3 are estimated and its dynamical evolution is inferred.

Prospective evaluation of a new device for the treatment of anal fistulas

AIM: To evaluate the safety of the implantation of a new device for the treatment of anal fistulas. The short-term clinical efficacy was also assessed. METHODS: This study took place at a tertiary care university hospital. Patients with a complex anal fistula of cryptoglandular origin were enrolled in the study and were treated with insertion of the new device. All patients were evaluated by clinical and physical examination, including an endoanal ultrasound at the baseline, and then at the 2 wk and 1, 2, 3 and 6-mo follow-up visits. RESULTS: Morbidity, continence status, and success rate were the main outcome measures. Ten patients underwent the placement of the new device. The fistulas were transphincteric in eight patients and extrasphincteric in the remaining two. The median duration of the surgical procedure was 34.5(range, 27-42) min. Neither intra- nor postoperative complications occurred, and all patients were discharged the day after the procedure. At the 6-mo follow-up evaluation, the final success rate was 70%. Three failures were registered: a device expulsion(on the 10 th postoperative day), the persistence of inflammatory tissue around the fistula tract(at the 2-mo follow up), and the persistence of serum discharge(at the 6-mo follow up). No patient experienced any change incontinence, as assessed by the Cleveland Clinic Fecal Incontinence score. CONCLUSION: The technical procedure is simple and has low risk of perioperative morbidity. The pre- and post-operative continence status did not change in any of the patients. The initial results at the 6-mo follow up seem to be promising. However, a longer follow-up period and a larger sample size are needed to confirm these preliminary results.

Photometric light curve solutions of three ultra-short period eclipsing binaries

We present the results of our study of the eclipsing binary systems CSS J112237.1+395219,LINEAR 1286561 and LINEAR 2602707 based on new CCD B,V,Rcand Iccomplete light *** ultra-short period nature of these stars,as reported by Drake et al.,is confirmed and the system’s periods are *** light curves were modeled using the 2003 version of the Wilson-Devinney *** necessary,cool spots on the surface of the primary component were introduced to account for asymmetries in the light *** a result,we found that CSS J112237.1+395219 is a W UMa type contact binary system belonging to W subclass with a mass ratio of q=1.61 and a shallow degree of contact of 14.8%where the primary component is hotter than the secondary one by 500 *** 1286561 and LINEAR2602707 are detached binary systems with mass ratios q=3.467 and q=0.987 *** detached systems are low-mass M-type eclipsing binaries with similar *** marginal contact,fill-out factor and temperature difference between components of CSS J112237.1+395219 suggest that this system may be at a key evolutionary state predicted by thermal relaxation oscillation(TRO)*** the estimated absolute parameters,we conclude that our systems share common properties with other ultrashort period binaries.

Valorisation of industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) residues and cheese whey into volatile fatty acids for single cell protein production

The production of single cell protein(SCP)using lignocellulosic materials stands out as a promising route in the circular bioeconomy ***,multiple steps are necessary for lignocellulosics-to-SCP processes,involving chemical pretreatments and specific aerobic *** there are no studies that investigated the SCP production from lignocellulosics by using only biological processes and microbial biomass able to work both anaerobically and *** this view,the valorisation of industrial hemp(Cannabis sativa L.)biomass residues(HBRs),specifically hurds and a mix of leaves and inflorescences,combined with cheese whey(CW)was investigated through a semi-continuous acidogenic co-fermentation process(co-AF).The aim of this study was to maximise HBRs conversion into VFAs to be further used as carbon-rich substrates for SCP *** process conditions were tested by either removing CW or increasing the amount of HBRs in terms of VS(i.e.,two and four times)to evaluate the performance of the co-AF *** HBRs resulted in a proportional increase in VFA production up to 3115 mg HAc L^(-1),with experimental production nearly 40%higher than theoretical *** synergy between HBRs and CW was demonstrated,proving the latter as essential to improve the biodegradability of the *** produced VFAs were subsequently tested as substrates for SCP synthesis in batch aerobic tests.A biomass concentration of 2.43 g TSS L^(-1) was achieved with a C/N ratio of 5.0 and a pH of 9.0 after two days of aerobic fermentation,reaching a protein content of 42%(g protein per g TSS).These results demonstrate the overall feasibility of the VFA-mediated HBR-to-SCP valorisation process.
