Determination of estrogenic activity in the river Chienti(Marche Region, Italy) by using in vivo and in vitro bioassays

Environmental estrogen-like compounds（i.e. xenoestrogens） are a variety of pollutants,ranging from synthetic to natural occurring molecules, that are found in surface and waste waters over a wide range of concentrations. In aquatic environment, the overall estrogenic activity is often due to the presence of a mixture of chemicals and their degraded products which can induce synergistic effects. Current strategies for monitoring estrogen-like chemicals are based on the use of a battery of in vivo and in vitro ecotoxicological tests. In this regard, the aim of the present work was to carry out a bio-monitoring study for testing estrogenicity of the Chienti river（Marche Region, Italy） by using both an E-screen and a vitellogenin（Vtg） induction assay in juvenile goldfish. Three sites were used for analysis,localized at the mouth（sampling point 1）, in the middle（sampling point 2） and at the origin（sampling point 3） of Chienti river. For most of the water samples（i.e. samples collected at sampling points 2 and 3）, clear estrogenic activity was detected in the E-screen assay suggesting different proliferation activities in function of the collecting site. In contrast, the Vtg ELISA demonstrated that water samples collected from each sampling point were estrogenic. Overall, we showed for the first time that the estrogenic activities in water samples from the Chienti river were significant in both in vivo and in vitro; we also observed a different sensitivity between bioassays.

Highly selective sorting of semiconducting single wall carbon nanotubes exhibiting light emission at telecom wavelengths

Single wail carbon nanotubes （SWNTs） are known for their exceptional electronic properties. However, most of the synthesis methods lead to the production of a mixture of carbon nanotubes having different chiralities associated with metallic （m-SWNTs） and semiconducting （s-SWNTs） characteristics. For application purposes, effective methods for separating these species are highly desired. Here, we report a protocol for achieving a highly selective separation of s-SWNTs that exhibit a fundamental optical transition centered at 1,550 nm. We employ a polymer assisted sorting approach, and the influence of preparation methods on the optical and transport performances of the separated nanotubes is analyzed. As even traces of m-SWNTs can critically affect performances, we aim to produce samples that do not contain any detectable fraction of residual m-SWNTs.

History and evolution of the use of oral mucosa for urethral reconstruction

We report here the history and evolution of the use of oral mucosa in reconstructive urethral surgery since it was first used for urethroplasty in 1894.Since that time,many authors have contributed to develop,improve and popularize the use of oral mucosa as a substitute material.Paediatric urologists should be considered pioneers on the use of oral mucosa as they used it to repair primary and failed hypospadias.The use of oral mucosa to repair penile and bulbar urethral strictures was described,for the first time,in 1993.Important evolutions in the technique for harvesting oral mucosa from the cheek were reported in 1996.Today,oral mucosa is considered the gold standard material for any type of anterior urethroplasty in a one-or two-stage repair due to its biological and structural characteristics that make it a highly versatile that is adaptable to any environment required by the reconstructive urethral surgery.As the future approaches,tissue engineering techniques will provide patients with new materials originating from the oral epithelial mucosal cells,which are cultured and expanded into a scaffold.However,the path to reach this ambitious objective is still long and many difficulties must be overcome along the way.

Is there a real diagnostic impact of elastosonography and contrast-enhanced ultrasonography in the management of thyroid nodules?

Ultrasonography(US) and the new applications US elastography(USE) and contrast-enhanced US(CEUS) are used in the screening of thyroid nodules,for which fine-needle aspiration biopsy(FNAB) is the best single diagnostic test.The aim of the study was to compare the sensitivity,specificity,positive predictive value(PPV),and accuracy of the four examinations in nodules with cytological and histological diagnoses.The study used data from US,FNAB,USE(elasticity(ELX 2/1) index),and CEUS(Peak index and time to peak(TTP) index) evaluated in 73 thyroid nodules in 63 consecutive patients likely to undergo surgery.Cytological-histological correlation was available for 38 nodules.No correlation emerged between nodule size and cytological results.A significant(P=0.03) positive correlation between cumulative US findings and cytological results was found.In addition,significant correlations between cumulative US findings and cytology(P=0.02) and between cumulative US findings and histology(P<0.0001) were found.US showed the best specificity and PPV,and FNAB the best sensitivity.There was no significant difference in the ELX 2/1 index,Peak index,or TTP index among nodules subdivided according to cytological scores.No significant correlation was found between ELX 2/1 index,Peak index,and TTP index,on the one hand,and nodule size,US cumulative findings,cytology,and histology on the other hand.The sensitivity of the ELX 2/1 index was high,but its specificity was very low.The accuracy and PPV of USE were lower than those of the other procedures.Only the correlation between Peak index and cumulative US findings reached a value close to significance.Our ultimate aim is to minimise unnecessary thyroidectomy.US and FNAB continue to play a central diagnostic role.The use of a US score showed high specificity and PPV.The specificity of FNAB was low in this selected series because of the numbers of indeterminate cytological responses.USE and CEUS are innovative techniques that need to be standardized.The ELX 2/1 index,Peak index,and TTP inde

A stable and precise articulation of the distal tibiofibular syndesmosis maintains the tibiofibular relationship,and it is essential for normal motion of the ankle joint.The disruption of this joint is frequently accompanied by rotational ankle fracture,such as pronation-external rotation,and rarely occurs without ankle fracture.The diagnosis is not simple,and ideal management of the various presentations of syndesmotic injury remains controversial to this day.Anatomical restoration and stabilization of the disrupted tibiofibular syndesmosis is essential to improve functional outcomes.In such an injury,including inadequately treated,misdiagnosed and correctly diagnosed cases,a chronic pattern characterized by persistent ankle pain,function disability and early osteoarthritis can result.This paper reviews anatomical and biomechanical characteristics of this syndesmosis,the mechanism of its acute injury associated to fractures,radiological and arthroscopic diagnosis and surgical treatment.

Objective:The aim of the current review is to summarize the available evidence to aid clinicians in the surveillance,treatment and follow-up of the different primary tumors developed by patients diagnosed with von Hippel-Lindau(VHL)syndrome.Methods:A non-systematic narrative review of original articles,meta-analyses,and random-ized trials was conducted,including articles in the pre-clinical setting to support relevant find-ings.Results:VHL disease is the most common rare hereditary disorder associated with clear cell renal cell carcinoma.Affected individuals inherit a germline mutation in one VHL allele,and any somatic event that disrupt the other allele can trigger mutations,chromosomal rearrange-ments,or epigenetic regulations leading to oncogenesis.From a clinical perspective,patients continuously develop multiple primary tumors.Conclusion:Because VHL is considered a rare disease,very limited evidence is available for diagnosis,surveillance,active treatment with local or systemic therapy and follow-up.

Five-year longitudinal evaluation of quality of life in a cohort of patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma

Differentiated thyroid carcinoma(DTC) generally has a favorable outcome.Thyroid disease,treatments,stress,and comorbidity can compromise health-related quality of life(QoL) and indirectly weigh upon the outcome. From 2004 to 2008,we evaluated QoL longitudinally in 128 DTC subjects.During scheduled examinations,subjects were asked to undergo a semi-structured psychiatric interview and five rated inventories.The same examination was conducted in 219 subjects after surgery for benign thyroid pathology.Low scores represent a better QoL.DTC and control subjects were similar in terms of age,male/female ratio,concomitant psychopharmacological treatments,and frequency of psychiatric diseases.In DTC subjects,Billewicz scale(BS) scores showed an increasing trend over time,especially among females.The ad hoc thyroid questionnaire(TQ) scores were similar in both groups and did not change over time,but at the end of the study ad hoc TQ and BS were significantly related.Ad hoc TQ scores were also related to age on entry to the study.In both male and female DTC subjects,Hamilton's tests for anxiety(HAM-A) ,but not for depression(HAM-D),showed an improving trend.At the end of the study,HAM-A and HAM-D scores were comparable to those of the control group.HAM-A and HAM-D were both positively correlated with the stage of cancer and the time between diagnosis and treatment.Only HAM-D correlated with age on entry to the study.Kellner symptom questionnaire(KSQ) item scores were higher in DTC subjects than in controls.The change over time in the items including anxiety,somatization,depression,and hostility was significant.Somatization and hostility were more significantly reduced in DTC females than in DTC males.Hostility scores were significantly lower in DTC subjects than in controls at the end of the study.Somatization and depression were significantly related to staging on diagnosis and age on entry to the study.Our study confirms a wide variation of illness perception in DTC subjects,which is generally unrelated to the favorable c
