Three-dimensional(3D)particle focusing in microfluidics is a fundamental capability with a wide range of applications,such as on-chip flow cytometry,where high-throughput analysis at the single-cell level is ***,3D focusing is achieved mainly in devices with complex layouts,additional sheath fluids,and complex pumping *** this work,we present a compact microfluidic device capable of 3D particle focusing at high flow rates and with a small footprint,without the requirement of external fields or lateral sheath flows,but using only a single-inlet,single-outlet microfluidic sequence of straight channels and tightly curving vertical *** device exploits inertial fluidic effects that occur in a laminar regime at sufficiently high flow rates,manipulating the particle positions by the combination of inertial lift forces and Dean drag *** device is fabricated by femtosecond laser irradiation followed by chemical etching,which is a simple two-step process enabling the creation of 3D microfluidic networks in fused silica glass *** use of tightly curving three-dimensional microfluidic loops produces strong Dean drag forces along the whole loop but also induces an asymmetric Dean flow decay in the subsequent straight channel,thus producing rapid cross-sectional mixing flows that assist with 3D particle *** use of out-of-plane loops favors a compact parallelization of multiple focusing channels,allowing one to process large amounts of *** addition,the low fluidic resistance of the channel network is compatible with vacuum driven *** resulting device is quite interesting for high-throughput on-chip flow cytometry.

We measure and predict states of Activation and Happiness using a body sensing applicationconnected to smartwatches. Through the sensors of commercially available smartwatches we collectindividual mood states and correlate them with body sensing data such as acceleration, heart rate, lightlevel data, and location, through the GPS sensor built into the smartphone connected to the smartwatchWe polled users on the smartwatch for seven weeks four times per day asking for their mood state. Wefound that both Happiness and Activation are negatively correlated with heart beats and with the levelsof light. People tend to be happier when they are moving more intensely and are feeling less activatedduring weekends. We also found that people with a lower Conscientiousness and Neuroticism andhigher Agreeableness tend to be happy more frequently. In addition, more Activation can be predictedby lower Openness to experience and higher Agreeableness and Conscientiousness. Lastly, we find thattracking people＇s geographical coordinates might play an important role in predicting Happiness andActivation. The methodology we propose is a first step towards building an automated mood trackingsystem, to be used for better teamwork and in combination with social network analysis studies.

Effect of rifaximin on gut microbiota composition in advanced liver disease and its complications

Liver cirrhosis is a paradigm of intestinal dysbiosis. The qualitative and quantitative derangement of intestinal microbial community reported in cirrhotic patients seems to be strictly related with the impairment of liver function. A kind of gut microbial "fingerprint",characterized by the reduced ratio of "good" to "potentially pathogenic" bacteria has recently been outlined,and is associated with the increase in Model for End-Stage Liver Disease and Child Pugh scores. Moreover,in patients presenting with cirrhosis complications such as spontaneous bacterial peritonitis(SBP),hepatic encephalopathy(HE),and,portal hypertension intestinal microbiota modifications or the isolation of bacteria deriving from the gut are commonly reported. Rifaximin is a non-absorbable antibiotic used in the management of several gastrointestinal diseases. Beyond bactericidal/bacteriostatic,immune-modulating and anti-inflammatory activity,a little is known about its interaction with gut microbial environment. Rifaximin has been demonstrated to exert beneficial effects on cognitive function in patients with HE,and also to prevent the development of SBP,to reduce endotoxemia and to improve hemodynamics in cirrhotics. These results are linked to a shift in gut microbes functionality,triggering the production of favorable metabolites. The low incidence of drug-related adverse events due to the small amount of circulating drug makes rifaximin a relatively safe antibiotic for the modulation of gut microbiota in advanced liver disease.

In the last decades,progresses in medical oncology have ameliorated the treatment of patients and their ***,further improvements are still necessary,in particular for certain types of tumors such as pancreatic,gastric,and lung cancer as well as acute myeloid leukemia where early detection and monitoring of the disease are crucial for final patient *** biopsy represents a great advance in the field because it is less invasive,less time-consuming,and safer compared to classical biopsies and it can be useful to monitor the evolution of the disease as well as the response of patients to *** biopsy allows the detection of circulating tumor cells,nucleic acids,and exosomes not only in blood but also in different biological fluids:urine,saliva,pleural effusions,cerebrospinal fluid,and *** the potential biomarkers detectable in liquid biopsies,microRNAs(miRNAs)are gaining more and more attention,since they are easily detectable,quite stable in biological fluids,and show high *** data demonstrate that miRNAs alone or in combination with other biomarkers could improve the diagnostic and prognostic power for many different *** this,standardization of methods,sample preparation,and analysis remain challenging and a huge effort should be made to address these issues before miRNA biomarkers can enter the *** review summarizes the main findings in the field of circulating miRNAs in both solid and hematological tumors.
