Cooperating CoScheduling:A Coscheduling Proposal Aimed at Non-Dedicated Heterogeneous NOWs

Implicit coscheduling techniques applied to non-dedicated homogeneous Networks Of Workstations （NOWs） have shown they can perform well when many local users compete with a single parallel job. Implicit coscheduling deals with minimizing the communication waiting time of parallel processes by identifying the processes in need of coscheduling through gathering and analyzing implicit runtime information, basically communication events. Unfortunately, implicit coscheduling techniques do not guarantee the performance of local and parallel jobs, when the number of parallel jobs competing against each other is increased. Thus, a low efficiency use of the idle computational resources is achieved. In order to solve these problems, a new technique, named Cooperating CoScheduling （CCS）, is presented in this work. Unlike traditional implicit coscheduling techniques, under CCS, each node takes its scheduling decisions from the occurrence of local events, basically communication, memory, Input/Output and CPU, together with foreign events received from cooperating nodes. This allows CCS to provide a social contract based on reserving a percentage of CPU and memory resources to ensure the progress of parallel jobs without disturbing the local users, while coscheduling of communicating tasks is ensured. Besides, the CCS algorithm uses status information from the cooperating nodes to balance the resources across the cluster when necessary. Experimental results in a non-dedicated heterogeneous NOW reveal that CCS allows the idle resources to be exploited efficiently, thus obtaining a satisfactory speedup and provoking an overhead that is imperceptible to the local user.

A Secure Elliptic Curve-Based RFID Protocol

Nowadays, the use of Radio Frequency Identification （RFID） systems in industry and stores has increased Nevertheless, some of these systems present privacy problems that may discourage potential users. Hence, high confidence and efficient privacy protocols are urgently needed. Previous studies in the literature proposed schemes that are proven to be secure, but they have scalability problems. A feasible and scalable protocol to guarantee privacy is presented in this paper. The proposed protocol uses elliptic curve cryptography combined with a zero knowledge-based authentication scheme. An analysis to prove the system secure, and even forward secure is also provided.

Incipient sliding of adhesive contacts

A model is proposed herein to investigate the incipient sliding of contacts in the presence of both friction and adhesion,where the interfacial response is modeled based on traction-separation laws.A Maugis-like parameter is defined to characterize the response in the tangential direction.Subsequently,the model is used to investigate the contact between a smooth cylinder and a flat body,where adhesion-friction interactions are strong.A range of behaviors are observed when a tangential displacement is imposed:When the parameter is low,the contact pressure exhibits a relatively constant profile;when it is high,a pressure spike is observed at the edge of the contact.This difference is caused by a significant interface compliance in the former case,which limits the amount of slip.The results for the mid-range values of the Maugis-like parameter can qualitatively replicate various experiments performed using polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)balls.

Enhanced ablation efficiency for silicon by femtosecond laser microprocessing with GHz bursts in MHz bursts(BiBurst)

Ultrashort laser pulses confine material processing to the laser-irradiated area by suppressing heat diffusion,resulting in precise ablation in diverse materials.However,challenges occur when high speed material removal and higher ablation efficiencies are required.Ultrafast burst mode laser ablation has been proposed as a successful method to overcome these limitations.Following this approach,we studied the influence of combining GHz bursts in MHz bursts,known as Bi Burst mode,on ablation efficiency of silicon.Bi Burst mode used in this study consists of multiple bursts happening at a repetition rate of 64 MHz,each of which contains multiple pulses with a repetition rate of 5 GHz.The obtained results show differences between Bi Burst mode and conventional single pulse mode laser ablation,with a remarkable increase in ablation efficiency for the Bi Burst mode,which under optimal conditions can ablate a volume4.5 times larger than the single pulse mode ablation while delivering the same total energy in the process.

Phalloplasty following penectomy for penile cancer

Objective:Penile reconstruction or phalloplasty following penectomy can be offered where the functional penile length is inadequate for a man to void while standing or to have sexual intercourse.Phalloplasty is usually staged due to the complex surgical techniques required.This narrative review describes the technical concepts and summarises the contemporary outcomes following phalloplasty in this challenging cohort.Methods:A retrospective review of the English literature was performed between January 1946 till November 2021.The data were synthesised and complemented by the expert opinion of the authors with 20 years of experience in this field.The flaps are ideally designed with an integrated urethra or alternatively,a further free flap urethroplasty can be offered.Phallo-plasty is further complicated following penectomy by scarring from the previous surgery and the potential loss of structures that would normally be present at the recipient site.Results:There are limited published data with a total of 19 men recorded in the literature.Only the radial artery forearm free flap and anterolateral thigh flap have been described in this cohort of patients.Functional outcomes including standing micturition,sensation in the neo-phallus,and the ability to orgasm are good.Overall quality of life and satisfaction was also good despite the high risk for long-term complications of the neophallus and donor site.Conclusion:Phalloplasty following penectomy requires microsurgical transfer of a free flap or a pedicled flap to reconstruct a neophallus.An erectile device is inserted at a later stage to facilitate sexual intercourse,if desired.Surgical scarring from penectomy and the potential loss of vasculature that would normally be present at the recipient site may further complicate reconstruction.Surgical and functional outcomes are acceptable based on the limited published experience to date.

Heavy metals in a typical city-river-reservoir system of East China:Multi-phase distribution,microbial response and ecological risk

The rapid construction of artificial reservoirs in metropolises has promoted the emergence of city-river-reservoir systems worldwide.This study investigated the environmental behaviors and risks of heavy metals in the aquatic environment of a typical system composed of main watersheds in Suzhou and Jinze Reservoir in Shanghai.Results shown that Mn,Zn and Cu were the dominant metals detected in multiple phases.Cd,Mn and Zn were mainly presented in exchangeable fraction and exhibited high bioavailability.Great proportion and high mobility of metals were found in suspended particulate matter(SPM),suggesting that SPM can greatly affect metal multi-phase distribution process.Spatially,city system(Ci S)exhibited more serious metal pollution and higher ecological risk than river system(Ri S)and reservoir system(Re S)owing to the diverse emission sources.Ci S and Re S were regarded as critical pollution source and sink,respectively,while Ri S was a vital transportation aisle.Microbial community in sediments exhibited evident spatial variation and obviously modified by exchangeable metals and nutrients.In particular,Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes presented significant positive correlations with most exchangeable metals.Risk assessment implied that As,Sb and Ni in water may pose potential carcinogenic risk to human health.Nevertheless,Re S was in a fairly safe state.Hg was the main risk contributor in SPM,while Cu,Zn,Ni and Sb showed moderate risk in sediments.Overall,Hg,Sb and Ci S were screened out as priority metals and system,respectively.More attention should be paid to these priority issues to promote the sustainable development of the watershed.

The current financial education framework has an increasing need to introduce tools that facilitate the application of theoretical models to real-world data and contexts.However,only a limited number of free tools are available for this purpose.Given this lack of tools,the present study provides two approaches to facilitate the implementa-tion of an event study.The first approach consists of a set of MS Excel files based on the Fama–French five-factor model,which allows the application of the event study methodology in a semi-automatic manner.The second approach is an open-source R-programmed tool through which results can be obtained in the context of an event study without the need for programming knowledge.This tool widens the calculus possibilities provided by the first approach and offers the option to apply not only the Fama–French five-factor model but also other models that are common in the finan-cial literature.It is a user-friendly tool that enables reproducibility of the analysis and ensures that the calculations are free of manipulation errors.Both approaches are freely available and ready-to-use.

Nano-scale coating wear measurement by introducing Raman-sensing underlayer

For gaining fundamental insight into coating wear mechanisms and increasing operational efficiency and automation degree of equipment in important application fields of coating techniques,it is of great importance to developing novel wear measurement techniques enabling nanoscale studies of coating wear in the running process,but this remains a significant challenge.Here,a facile strategy is reported to achieve accurate coating thickness quantification at nanoscale level,which is based on a bilayer structure:a top target layer of a-C:H(hydrogenated amorphous carbon)film is considered as a light attenuating and anti-wear layer while underlayer of silicon serves as Raman-sensing layer.Through constructing the relationship between the thickness of a-C:H and Raman intensity of attenuated silicon signal,the coating thickness quantification method is established and successfully applied to quantify coating wear in the friction process.This approach can effectively avoid remarkable errors caused by tribo-induced effects in the interface regions,demonstrating its advantage in error tolerance.Details about these tribo-induced effects are also elucidated by a combination of Raman spectroscopy,optical profilometer,EELS,and TEM.In particular,the proposed approach enables the possibility of measuring coating wear with oil film on top,which breaks an important limitation of existed wear measurement methods,i.e.,incapable of applying in oil-lubricated conditions.This approach can be used to quantify the wear condition of diverse target coatings and has the potential of online wear monitoring when combining a compact laser excitation and detection system.

Ulcerative colitis(UC)is a chronic inflammatory disease with a high impact.In order to improve patient outcomes,the clinician-patient relationship in daily practice is critical.Clinical guidelines provide a framework for UC diagnosis and treatment.However,standard procedures and the medical content focused upon medical consultations in UC patients has not yet been defined.Moreover,UC is a complex disease,given that patient characteristics and patient needs have been proven to vary during clinical consultation since establishing the diagnosis and upon the course of the disease.In this article,we have discussed the key elements and specific objectives to consider in medical consultation,such as diagnosis,first visits,follow-up visits,active disease patients,patients on topical therapies,new treatment initiation,refractory patients,extra-intestinal manifestations,as well as challenging situations.The key elements have been mentioned to comprise effective communication techniques,motivational interviewing(MI),as well as information and educational aspects,or organizational issues.The key elements to be implemented in daily practice were reported to comprise several general principles like duly prepared consultations,in addition to honesty and empathy with patients,as well as effective communication techniques,MI,information and educational points,or organizational issues.The role of other healthcare professionals such as specialized nurses,psychologists,or the use of checklists was also discussed and commented on.
