Assessing the adequacy and sustainability performance of multi-family residential buildings in Anambra State,Nigeria

The proliferation of multi-family residential building in Anambra State of Nigeria due to increasing demand without recourse to performance has broughtconcerns about the adequacy and sustainability of this housing *** study therefore,assessed the adequacy and sustainability performance of multi-family residential buildings in urban areas of Anambra *** study sampled the opinions of 384 households living in multi-family residential buildings through a questionnaire *** conducted data analysis based on 214 responses that were useful for *** study found that internal and building component variables and supporting neigh-borhood variables were adequate,but the surrounding environment variables were inadequate based on Mean Score ***,based on Sustainability Performance Index,the occupant sperceived social sustainability performance of the buildings as satisfactory,while environmental and economic sustainability performance were perceived as fairly *** Pearson correlation coefficient result further established that adequacy of internal and building component variables was significantly and positively related to the residents'perceived social sustainability *** of the surrounding environmental variables was also found to be positively and significantly related to the residents'perceived environmental sustainability performance,whereas adequacy of supporting neighborhood facilities was found to be negatively and significantly related to the residents’perceived economic sustainability *** sug-gested that investors and owners of multi-family residential buildings should direct more efforts towards improving the surrounding environment to supplements other facilities and increase the economic benefit of the renters or occupiers with increasing economic sustainability performance in terms of value for money.

Progress towards the Sustainable Development Goal 7 and other related goals hinges on increased access to clean energy alternatives for all people irrespective of where they ***,most developing countries including Ghana still rely largely on traditional biomass as the main source of household energy as a result of a myriad of *** the foregoing,the present study uses the Ghana Living Standard Survey 7(GLSS 7)household data and the multinomial logit regression model to analyse the factors that determine the transition to cleaner cooking energy in *** analysis shows that the main determinants of household energy choice in Ghana are education,household dwelling type,household size,employment and income *** education,modern housing,paid employment and higher income increase the adoption of cleaner energy,a higher dependency ratio and employment in the informal sector increase the likelihood of using unclean *** access to education and the adoption of policies to improve housing conditions,employment and incomes are recommended to encourage the adoption of cleaner energy alternatives.

Optimum Threshold Estimation of Thorax CT Scan for COVID-19 Diagnosis in a Single Center in Cameroon

Objective: To evaluate the lung CT scan as a possible predictive diagnostic method for COVID-19 in the Cameroonian context. Methods: We designed a cross sectional study. Suspected cases of COVID-19 during the first wave at the national social insurance fund (NSIF) hospital were screened with both COVID-19 with lung CT scan and a PCR test. Univariate analysis was performed for sample description and multivariate analysis to assess the correlation between positive results for the PCR and other parameters. We estimated the optimum threshold of sensitivity/specificity, and area under curve using the empirical method and package. Results: A total of 62 suspected COVID-19 cases were recorded, predominantly males (Sex Ratio = 2.2) with a median age of 58.5 (IQR = 19.7). Among our 62 patients, 29 (46.8%) were confirmed COVID-19 cases with positive PCR results. All the patients had a thorax CT scan with a median impairment of 40% (IQR = 20%). The optimum threshold estimate for CT scan for COVID-19 infection diagnosis was 60% (95% CI = 25% - 80%). Overall, the sensitivity and specificity estimates were 0.30 (95% CI = 0.15 - 0.49) and 0.87 (95% CI = 0.70 - 0.96), respectively, leading to an Area Under Curve (AUC) estimate of 0.59 (95% CI = 0.46, 0.71). Conclusion: In this setting, lung CT scan was neither sensitive nor specific to predict COVID-19 disease.

Lactate reloaded–reevaluation of the importance of lactate monitoring in the management of adult sepsis in the emergency department

For about a quarter of a century,monitoring lactate levels and/or lactate clearance has been an unquestionable cornerstone in sepsis *** elevated lactate level appeared to be an independent predictor of mortality,and the consequent metabolic acidosis was thought to explain a number of pathophysiological changes seen in septic *** physiological and clinical findings seem to challenge the adverse role of lactic acidosis in *** suggests that lactate levels are not necessarily directly proportional to either tissue or cellular hypoxia,and conversely,despite high lactate levels,increased peripheral tissue oxygen pressure can be measured in adult patients with septic *** to the most recent understanding of in vitro and in vivo evidence,the elevated lactate level in sepsis might be a normal reaction due to adrenergic stress with potential beneficial/protective physiological effects,as *** the one hand,burning lactic may help fuel the body during critical illness,but on the other hand,with a slight drop in pH,the body may counteract certain deleterious changes during the dysregulated host response;reduce the chances of reperfusion myocardial injury,and improve tissue oxygenation by shifting the haemoglobin dissociation curve to the *** the pathophysiological process in sepsis resulting in elevated lactate levels may aid management in an emergency,medicine,and intensive care *** more in-depth physiological knowledge,physicians may inevitably surpass normalisation heuristics and deliver personalized rather than protocolised sepsis resuscitation.

Pristine mesoporous carbon hollow spheres as safe adjuvants induce excellent Th2-biased immune response

The development of a safe and effective adjuvant that amplifies the immune response to an antigen is important for vaccine delivery. In this study, we developed pristine mesoporous carbon hollow spheres as high-capacity vaccine protein nanocarriers and safe adjuvants for boosting the immune response. Mono-dispersed invaginated mesostructured hollow carbon spheres （IMHCSs） have an average particle size of -200 nm, large pore size of 15 rim, and high pore volume of 2.85 cmB.g-1. IMHCSs exhibited a very high loading capacity （1,040 ~tg-mg-1） towards ovalbumin （OVA, a model antigen）, controlled OVA release behavior, excellent safety profile to normal cells, and high antigen delivery efficacy towards macrophages. In vivo immunization studies in mice demonstrated that OVA-loaded IMHCSs induced a 3-fold higher IgG response compared to a traditional adjuvant QuilA used in veterinary vaccine research. OVA delivered by IMHCSs induced a higher IgG1 concentration than IgG2a, indicating a T-helper 2 （Th2）-polarized response. Interferon-y and interleukin-4 concentration analysis revealed both T-helper 1 （Thl） and Th2 immune responses induced by OVA- loaded IMHCSs. IMHCSs are safer adjuvants than QuilA. Our study revealed that pure IMHCSs without further functionalization can be used as a safe adjuvant for promoting Th2-biased immune responses for vaccine delivery.

Control of an Active Filter by Duty Cycle Modulation (DCM) for the Harmonic Decontamination of a Three-Phase Electrical Network

This paper presents the control of the active filter by Duty Cycle Modulation (DCM) for the harmonic pollution control of a three-phase electrical system. Several research works have preceded this work, but most of them deal with the control by pulse-width modulation and the differences lie around the THD reduction performance, the quality of the wave obtained, the simplicity of the scheme and the cost of the control. For this purpose, we propose a very innovative approach to active filter control which aims at reducing the current THD at a lower rate than pulse-width modulation techniques improving at the same time the wave quality with a more simplified control scheme. First we present the schematic diagram of the active filter, then we present the design of the control of this active filter based on the real and imaginary instantaneous power method which uses the algebraic “Clark” transformation. The Duty Cycle Modulation controller is used to obtain the required control commands to be injected to the inverter. We then developed a simulink model of the active filter to validate this study. The simulations were performed in the Matlab/Simulink environment. The results obtained show a significant improvement on the harmonic current control techniques for the THD of 1.02% which was 26.25%, the elimination of noise in the signal and the simplicity of the control with an easier implementation than the pulse width modulation (PWM) make the Duty Cycle Modulation (DCM) control a very promising tool.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)- Blood Interactions in Antiretroviral Drugs Environment—Surface Thermodynamics Approach

Hamaker coefficient approach was used as a surface thermodynamic tool in determining the HIV- blood interactions in the antiretroviral drug environment. The methodology involved the absorbance measurement using a digital Ultraviolet Visible MetaSpecAE1405031Pro Spectrophotometer of blood samples collected from ten HIV infected persons who had not commenced treatment with antiretroviral drugs (No ARV), ten HIV infected persons who had already commenced treatment with antiretroviral drugs (with ARV) and ten blood samples of uninfected persons all in each of five different antiretroviral drugs environment. The variables required for the computations with the Lifshiftz formula in the determination of Hamaker constants/coefficients were derived from the absorbance data. The values of the various Hamaker coefficients for each antiretroviral drug on both infected and uninfected blood samples were calculated. MATLAB software tools were employed in the computations. The absolute values for the combined Hamaker coefficient for the drugs ranged from -0.02481 × 10-21 Joule for drug 4 to -0.05845 × 10-21 Joule for drug 3. The negative senses of the absolute combined Hamaker coefficient imply net negative van der Waals forces indicating a possible repulsion between HIV and drug coated lymphocyte cells. For the virus interacting with blood samples not coated with the drugs, the Hamaker coefficients are positive indicating the vulnerability of the lymphocytes in the absence of the drugs. This effect suggests effective coating or binding of the lymphocytes with the drugs is needed for possible blocking of the virus from the surface of the lymphocyte cell. A thermodynamic criterion for HIV-drug interaction prediction was suggested and found to be a valuable tool in HIV-blood interaction study. The use of the findings of this work by pharmaceutical industries may be possible in the area of drug design.
