Portal hypertension caused by non-cirrhotic(and non neoplastic)splanchnic vein thrombosis(NC-SVT)is responsible for 5–10%of portal hypertension cases in the western world(1).Chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms(MPN)or systemic prothrombotic disorders are in cause in about 40%of subjects,while in about 30%a local condition,such as recent abdominal surgery or infection/inflammation triggers the *** local condition,however,can only be the precipitating cause,since a thorough screening allows identifying the co-occurrence of systemic thrombophilia in about 30%of such ***,screening is mandatory even in cases where the cause of NC-SVT seems ***,about 30%of cases of NC-SVT remains unexplained and defined idiopathic(1).

Novel soil quality indicators for the evaluation of agricultural management practices:a biological perspective

Developments in soil biology and in methodsto characterize soil organic carbon can potentially delivernovel soil quality indicators that can help identifymanagement practices able to sustain soil productivityand environmental resilience. This work aimed atsynthesizing results regarding the suitability of a range ofsoil biological and biochemical properties as novel soilquality indicators for agricultural management. The soilproperties, selected through a published literature review,comprised different labile organic carbon fractions [hydrophilicdissolved organic carbon, dissolved organic carbon,permanganate oxidizable carbon (POXC), hot waterextractable carbon and particulate organic matter carbon],soil disease suppressiveness measured using a Pythium-Lepidium bioassay, nematode communities characterizedby amplicon sequencing and qPCR, and microbialcommunity level physiological profiling measured withMicroResp™. Prior studies tested the sensitivity of each ofthe novel indicators to tillage and organic matter additionin ten European long-term field experiments (LTEs) andassessed their relationships with pre-existing soil qualityindicators of soil functioning. Here, the results of theseprevious studies are brought together and interpretedrelative to each other and to the broader body of literatureon soil quality assessment. Reduced tillage increasedcarbon availability, disease suppressiveness, nematoderichness and diversity, the stability and maturity of thefood web, and microbial activity and functional *** matter addition played a weaker role in enhancingsoil quality, possibly due to the range of composition of theorganic matter inputs used in the LTEs. POXC was theindicator that discriminated best between soil managementpractices, followed by nematode indices based on functionalcharacteristics. A new oral formulation for the release of sodium butyrate in the ileo-cecal region and colon

AiM： To develop a new formulation with hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose and Shellac coating for extended and selective delivery of butyrate in the ileo-caecal region and colon. METHODS： One-gram sodium butyrate coated tablets containing ^13C-butyrate were orally administered to 12 healbhy subjects and 12 Crohn＇s disease patients and the rate of ^13C-butyrate absorption was evaluated by t3co2 breath test analysis for eight hours. Tauroursodeoxycholic acid （500 rag） was co-administered as a biomarker of oro-ileal transit time to determine also the site of release and absorption of butyrate by the time of its serum maximum concentration. RESULTS： The coated formulation delayed the ^13C-butyrate release by 2-3 h with respect to the uncoated tablets. Sodium butyrate was delivered in the intestine of all subjects and a more variable transit time was found in Crohn＇s disease patients than in healthy subjects. The variability of the peak ^13co2 in the kinetic release of butyrate was explained by the inter-subject variability in transit time. However, the coating chosen ensured an efficient release of the active compound even in patients with a short transit time. coNCLUSiON： Simultaneous evaluation of breath ^13co2 and tauroursodeoxycholic acid concentrationtime curves has shown that the new oral formulation consistently releases sodium butyrate in the ileo-cecal region and colon both in healthy subjects and Crohn＇s disease patients with variable intestinal transit time. This formulation may be of therapeutic value in inflammatory bowel disease patients due to the appropriate release of the active compound.

Heart failure(HF)has been defined as global disease of pandemic proportions,since it affects around 26 million people worldwide.[1]According to a recent study,age is the most important factor influencing the prevalence of HF,as it is for most other chronic conditions.[2]This means that,with the predicted aging of the population(the proportion of the world’s population aged 60 years and over will nearly double from 2015 to 2050),[3]there will be a growth in the total burden of HF,and a rise in the number of comorbidities in HF *** to a recent study,almost 86%of adults with HF have two or more comorbid conditions.[4]comorbidity,defined as the co-existence of one or more additional conditions in individuals with a specified index medical condition,[5]adds to the complexity of treating elderly patients with HF.

Determining how animals respond to resource availability across spatial and temporal extents is crucial to understand ecological processes underpinning habitat ***,we used a multi-scale approach to study the year-round habitat selection of the Crested Tit(Lophophanes cristatus)in a semi-natural lowland woodland of northern italy,analysing different habitat features at each *** performed Crested Tit censuses at three different spatial *** the macrohabitat scale,we used geolocalized observations of individuals to compute Manly's habitat selection index,based on a detailed land-use map of the study *** the microhabitat scale,the trees features were compared between presence and absence *** the foraging habitat scale,individual foraging birds and their specific position on trees were recorded using focal animal *** were performed during both the breeding(March to May)and wintering(December to January)*** the macrohabitat scale,the Crested Tits significantly selected pure and mixed pine forests and avoided woods of alien plant species,farmlands and urban *** the microhabitat scale,old pine woods with dense cover were selected,with no significant difference in the features of tree selection between the two phenological *** the foraging habitat scale,the species was observed spending more time foraging in the canopies than in the understorey,using mostly the portion of Scots Pine(Pinus sylvestris)canopies closer to the trunk in winter,while during the breeding period,the whole canopy was ***,breeding and wintering habitats largely overlapped in the Crested *** on our findings,lowland Crested Tits can be well defined as true habitat specialists:they are strictly related to some specific coniferous woodland ***,compared to other tit species,which normally show generalist habits during winter,the Crested Tit behaves as a habitat specialist also out of the breeding ***

Apple(Malus)and pear(Pyrus)are economically important fruit crops well known for their unique textures,f lavours,and nutritional *** genera are characterised by a distinct pattern of secondary metabolites,which directly affect not only resistance to certain diseases,but also have significant impacts on the f lavour and nutritional value of the *** identical chromosome numbers,similar genome size,and their recent divergence date,together with DNA markers have shown that apple and pear genomes are highly *** study utilized comparative genomic approaches,including simple sequence repeats,high resolution single nucleotide polymorphism melting analysis,and single nucleotide polymorphism chip analysis to identify genetic differences among hybrids of Malus and Pyrus,and F2 *** research has demonstrated and validated that these three marker types,along with metabolomics analysis are very powerful tools to detect and confirm hybridity of progeny derived from crosses between apple and pear in both cross ***,this work analysed the genus-specific metabolite patterns and the resistance to fire blight(Erwinia amylovora)in *** findings of this work will enhance and accelerate the breeding of novel tree fruit crops that benefit producers and consumers,by enabling marker assisted selection of desired traits introgressed between pear and apple.

The energy and environmental impacts resulting from the buildings sector are one of the impending problems which address the international action. The main strategies implemented to answer to this problem are the energy efficiency improvement, the co2 emissions reduction and the renewable energy share increase in the energy mix. The key subject discussed in this paper is the ＂building energy impact＂, aimed to leading the building sector towards the energy efficiency improvement. The paper＇s aim is to show that an energy assessment is not able to give a consistent evaluation of building energy use, and it could be misleading. Therefore, the paper proposes the exergy assessment as complementary evaluation method, in order to achieve a complete description of the concept ＂building＇s energy impact on the environment＂. in the first section, we describe the parameters currently used for the building energy assessment, focusing on the primary energy index and the co2 emissions index. in the second section, we introduce the exergy as a complementary index. This index is a possible answer to the problems previously identified. Finally, in the third section, we present three test-cases, analyzed through transient simulation software TRNSYS. The purpose of the test-cases analysis is to show the difference between energy and exergy assessment.
