In contrast to mammals and birds,fish display an amazing diversity of genetic sex determination systems,with frequent changes during evolution possibly associated with the emergence of new sex chromosomes and sex-determining *** better understand the molecular and evolutionary mechanisms driving this diversity,several fish models are studied in *** the medaka(Oryzias latipes Temminck and Schlegel,1846)for which the master sex-determination gene has been identified,one of the most advanced models for studying sex determination is the Southern platyfish(Xiphophorus maculatus,Günther 1966).Xiphophorus maculatus belongs to the Poeciliids,a family of live-bearing freshwater fish,including platyfish,swordtails and guppies that perfectly illustrates the diversity of genetic sex-determination mechanisms observed in *** ***,bacterial artificial chro-mosome contigs covering the sex-determination region of the X and Y sex chromosomes have been *** molecular analysis demonstrated that the sex-determination region is very unstable and frequently undergoes duplications,deletions,inversions and other *** gene candidates linked to the master sex-determining gene have been identified,some of them corresponding to *** putative genes are present on both the X and the Y chromosomes,suggesting a poor degree of differentiation and a young evolutionary age for platyfish sex *** compared with other fish and tetrapod genomes,syntenies were detected only with *** observation supports an independent origin of sex chromosomes,not only in different vertebrate lineages but also between different fish species.

Alleviating vibrations along a harmonically driven nonuniform Euler-Bernoulli beam by imposing nodes

A passive approach is developed to quench excess vibration along a harmonically driven,arbitrarily supported,nonuniform Euler-Bernoulli beam with constant thickness(height)and varying *** suppression is achieved by attaching properly tuned vibration absorbers to enforce nodes,or points of zero vibration,along the *** efficient hybrid method is proposed whereby the finite element method is used to model the nonuniform beams,and a formulation based on the assumed modes method is used to determine the required attachment force supplied by each absorber to induce the desired *** the attachment forces needed to induce nodes,design plots are generated for the absorber parameters as a function of the tolerable vibration amplitude for each absorber *** the node locations are judiciously chosen,it is possible to dramatically suppress the vibration along a selected region of the *** such,sensitive instruments can be placed in this region and will remain nearly *** studies illustrate the application to several systems with various types of nonuniformity,boundary conditions,and attachment and node locations;these examples validate the proposed method to passively control excess vibration by inducing nodes on nonuniform beams subjected to harmonic excitations.

Peer-Support in Oncology: A Qualitative Study of Caregivers Perception in a Cancer Center

An extreme （weather and climate） event does not only mean that an extreme occurs at a location, but more generally it can impact a certainarea and last a certain period of time, which is defined as a regional extreme event （REE） with a certain impacted area and duration. The conceptof REE has been defined to allow mainly objective assessment of the events without a pre-determined boundary and duration. This paper reviewsthe studies on REEs published during the past 20 years, especially recent years. Mainly in view of methodology, these studies can be divided intothree types studies focusing on spatial simultaneity, studies focusing on temporal persistence, and studies identifying REEs. The methodsidentifying REEs include two kinds, e.g., type-I methods stressing REE＇s temporal persistence within a relatively certain area and type-IImethods focusing on catching a complete REE. Identification methods proposed in this paper could provide valuable information for variouspurposes, such as real-time monitoring, estimating long-term changes, mechanism diagnosis, forecasting study and even attribution *** on REEs is important for objectively defining extreme weather and climate events, which depends on the spatial and temporal scales ofinterest. Such an objective definition will support ongoing climate monitoring and improve the assessment of how regional extreme events havechanged over time.

Anomaly detection and Classification in Streaming PMU data in Smart Grids

The invention of Phasor Measurement Units(PMUs)produce synchronized phasor measurements with high resolution real time monitoring and control of power system in smart grids that make *** are used in transmitting data to Phasor data Concentrators(PdC)placed in control centers for monitoring purpose.A primary concern of system operators in control centers is maintaining safe and efficient operation of the power *** can be achieved by continuous monitoring of the PMU data that contains both normal and abnormal *** normal data indicates the normal behavior of the grid whereas the abnormal data indicates fault or abnormal conditions in power *** a result,detecting anomalies/abnormal conditions in the fast flowing PMU data that reflects the status of the power system is critical.A novel methodology for detecting and categorizing abnormalities in streaming PMU data is presented in this *** proposed method consists of three modules namely,offline Gaussian Mixture Model(GMM),online GMM for identifying anomalies and clustering ensemble model for classifying the *** significant features of the proposed method are detecting anomalies while taking into account of multivariate nature of the PMU dataset,adapting to concept drift in the flowing PMU data without retraining the existing model unnecessarily and classifying the *** proposed model is implemented in Python and the testing results prove that the proposed model is well suited for detection and classification of anomalies on the fly.
