Evaluation of forest ecosystem services is a hot topic,both in china and at abroad,but it has not yet obtained a consistency of evaluation indicator systems and evaluation *** the framework of evaluation criteria to be implemented for forest ecosystem services,years of consecutive observation data from Long Term Ecological research Stations affiliated to Chinese forest Ecosystem research Network(CFErN),forest resource inventory and public data were applied to carry out a detailed and dynamic evaluation on the physical quantity and value of ecosystem services of Chinese pine forests in *** results showed that the above services had the total value and unit value of 1144.9640 billion(1.1449640×10 12 )rMB and 52.074 thousand rMB per hectare per year,respectively during the 9th Five-year plan(1996―2000),and of 1190.5461 billion rMB and 52.101 thousand rMB per hectare per year,respectively,during the 10th Five-year plan(2001―2005).For Chinese pine forests,water conservation was 40.40 hundred million cubic meters annually,soil conservation was 67 million tons and C fixation 9 million tons annually,production of healthful negative ions was 1.96×10 20 , absorption of SO2 was 5.02 hundred million kilograms and dust-catching was 759.10 hundred million kilograms. Among the 15 provinces of china with Chinese pine forests,the biggest beneficiary from ecosystem services was Liaoning province;while Hunan province was the smallest beneficiary between the 9th Five-year plan.

A preliminary research on landscape ecology in desertification monitoring and assessment was reported. Also, this paper laid stress on the study of landscape diversity, dominance, evenness and Markov Matrix model and their respective landscape ecological meanings in the desertification monitoring and assessment. Concurrently, it took Shazhuyu Experimental Area, Qinghai province as a specific case study.

The Global Invasive Species Database, GISD, comprises 27 species of the most significant invasive alien insects in the world (through November, 2005), 6 of which are originally native to china, 11 are established in china, and 10 have a potential invasion threat to china. This paper discusses these species in terms of distribution, harmfulness and dispersal ways, and finds that: (i) Information re-garding invasive insects in the GISD remains inadequate. Such harmful invasive species as Opogona sacchari (Bojer), Oracella acuta (Lobdell), and Dendroctonus valens LeConte are not included. (ii) Ten species of invasive insects, particularly Lasius neglectus Van Loon and Linepithema humile (Mayr) which become established in areas near china, have the potential to become established in china. (iii) Special attention should be paid to species from Asia and the Americas because of their greater likeli-hood of becoming established in china. Finally, some management strategies including legislation, quarantine, early warning, prevention and control are suggested.

We studied the molecular mechanism of the quality traits of wood formation in *** used the immature latewood cells of two Japanese larch(Larix kaempferi)clones with significant differences in density and in microfibrillar angle(MFA)as materials to analyze their gene expression profiles.A total of 1735 differentially expressed genes were detected in immature latewood cells of the two clones,among which,971 were up-regulated and 764 were *** gene expression profiling analysis revealed that genes encoding transcription factor members NAC66 and r2r3-MYB4,microtubule-associated protein,actin-related protein,cell wall protein members,arabinogalactan protein,Fasciclin-like arabinogalactan protein and glycine-rich protein,and several cell-wall-synthesis genes affected wood density and MFA by regulating latewood formation at transcriptional *** study results represent a basis for selection of quality traits and genetic improvement of larch wood.

In recent years, many serious forest fires occurred in precious pinus pumila forests in Daxing'anling Mountains of Heilongjiang province and Inner Mongolia. But up to now, there is still a lack of proper understanding of fire occurrence environments in p. pumila forests. In present paper, we investigated and studied the fire occurrence environments. The results showed that fires in p. pumila forests had their own special fire environments. Abundant fuel, drought weather, dry thunder and high altitude terrain created the special fire occurrence environments in p. pumila forests in Daxing'anling

In china, pinus pumila is mainly distributed in Daxing’anling, while those growing in the eastern Daxing’anling are primarily covered under the jurisdiction of Huzhong forest Bureau. p. pumila is an evergreen shrub, 3-6 m high, and always grows vigorously. Its trunks creep along the ground, usually 10 m long or more. It is easily flammable because of the large amounts of resins and volatile oils in its body. Attacking forest fires is a dangerous work, especially in p. pumila scrubs. The fires in p. pumila scrubs are very different from those in other forest types, e.g. fierce combustion and heavy smoke. In this paper, the distribution characteristics of p. pumila scrubs were presented. Attacking techniques and safety precautions for attacking fires in p. pumila scrubs were also discussed.

A density-dependent matrix model and its applications in optimizing harvest schemes

The snow leopard （Uncia uncia） is a member of the Felidae subfamily pantherinae and on the basis of morphology and behavior it is placed alone in a separate *** leopards are classified as Endangered in the IUCN red List of Threatened Species since 1988 and have been included in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora （CITES） since *** leopard was found in 12 countries across Central Asia and china contains as much as 60% of the snow leopard's potential habitat with a population of 2,000-2,500 *** habitat was computed at as much as 1,824,316 km in china,making china,potentially at least,the single most important country with as much as 60% of all snew leopard ***,little has been known about this species in china,such as the hot spot,population size,population trends and Factors involved,snow leopard-prey relationships,*** leopard was classified as the Class （?） state-protected wildlife in china and occurred in six provinces or autonomous regions （Qinghai,Gansu, Sichuan,Yunnan,Xinjiang and Tibet）.We extensive consulted with stakeholders and identified some primary threats to long-term snow survival across their range in china,including the poaching snow leopards for trades in hides or bones,habitat degradation and fragmentation,reduction of natural prey due to competition with livestock,killing of snow leopards in retribution for livestock depredation,lack oF effective enforcement and human population growth or poverty,To protect this endangered species,some actions must be taken in china:（1） Special laws and policies For poaching of snow leopard,and their prey and their habitat arc enforced effective management;（2） promote the establishment on nature reserve and livestock grazing practices that reduce impacts on snow leopard and its prey species in conservation area and encourage livestock husbandry practices that reduce depredation by snow leopards and other predator;（

Based on temporal data collected from 36 re-measured plots, transition probabilities of trees from a diameter class to a higher class were analyzed for the broad-leaved-Korean pine forest in the Changbai Mountains. It was found that the transition probabilities were related not only to diameter size but also to the total basal area of trees with the diameter class. This paper demonstrates the development of a density-dependent matrix model, DM2, and a series of simulations with it for forest stands with different conditions under different harvest schemes. After validations with independent field data, this model proved a suitable tool for optimization analysis of harvest schemes on computers. The optimum harvest scheme(s) can be determined by referring to stand growth, total timbers harvested, and size diversity changes over time. Three user-friendly interfaces were built with a forest management decision support system forestAr?for easy operations of DM2 by forest managers. This paper also summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of DM2.

forests in the Changbai Mountains are important timber sources for economic development of the society and provide ecological services in northeast china. In order to strengthen forest resource management, this paper analyzed management-induced changes in forest structure, tree species composition and forest landscape pattern from 1987 to 2000 for Baihe forestry Bureau in Jilin province based on digitized forest parcel maps and forest survey data. The results suggested that the area of Mature, High-Stocking, and Close-Canopy forests decreased by 31.4%, 55.9% and 10.7% respectively; volume of Mixed forest, the native forest vegetation type, decreased by 17.8%;the number of patches increased tremendously but the mean patch density decreased sharply for Mature, High-Stocking, Close-Canopy, and Mixed forests. All the changes in forest structure, species composition, and landscape pattern indicated severe degradations going on with the forests in Baihe forestry Bureau. Because of the effect of degradation to forest services, restoring forest resources and protecting biodiversity has become urgently important. The strategies of sustainable forest management need to be worked out and implemented.
