Understanding aerosol-vegetation interactions is vital in ecosystems.However,the interactions remain elusive partly due to the lack of suitable plant growth chamber systems.Particularly,deposition of submicron particles on leaf surfaces is challenging due to its low deposition velocities compared to larger particles.In this work,we present a plant-growth chamber that was used to study the effect of sub-micron black carbon(BC)particles on the growth and photosynthesis of plants.The chamber system simultaneously enables the growth of multiple plants in pots and the deposition of submicron particles onto them.Two spraying methods assisted by ultrasonic and electrostatic forces were employed as aerosol generators to realize the particle deposition.The flow regime inside the chamber was numeri-cally calculated to predict the transportation of aerosol particles,suggesting the optimal operating conditions of the chamber.The gas-phase particle size distribution measurements showed that gener-ated BC particles were suspended in submicron diameter ranges.The aerosol generators were examined in the chamber using three conductor and insulator substrates as a model of plant leaves.Microscope observations and spectroscopic analysis ascertained that submicron BC particles generated from our generators were deposited on all substrate surfaces.Using the developed chamber system,systematic studies can be performed to advance the fundamental understanding of aerosol-vegetation interactions.

The rise of artifcial intelligence(AI)has brought breakthroughs in many areas of medicine.In ophthalmology,AI has delivered robust results in the screening and detection of diabetic retinopathy,age-related macular degeneration,glaucoma,and retinopathy of prematurity.Cataract management is another feld that can beneft from greater AI application.Cataract is the leading cause of reversible visual impairment with a rising global clinical burden.Improved diagnosis,monitoring,and surgical management are necessary to address this challenge.In addition,patients in large developing countries often sufer from limited access to tertiary care,a problem further exacerbated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.AI on the other hand,can help transform cataract management by improving automation,efcacy and overcoming geographical barriers.First,AI can be applied as a telediagnostic platform to screen and diagnose patients with cataract using slit-lamp and fundus photographs.This utilizes a deep-learning,convolutional neural network(CNN)to detect and classify referable cataracts appropriately.Second,some of the latest intraocular lens formulas have used AI to enhance prediction accuracy,achieving superior postoperative refractive results compared to traditional formulas.Third,AI can be used to augment cataract surgical skill training by identifying diferent phases of cataract surgery on video and to optimize operating theater workfows by accurately predicting the duration of surgical procedures.Fourth,some AI CNN models are able to efectively predict the progression of posterior capsule opacifcation and eventual need for YAG laser capsulotomy.These advances in AI could transform cataract management and enable delivery of efcient ophthalmic services.The key challenges include ethical management of data,ensuring data security and privacy,demonstrating clinically acceptable performance,improving the generalizability of AI models across heterogeneous populations,and improving the trust of end-users.

Cardiovascular health awareness,risk perception,behavioural intention and INTERHEART risk stratification among middle-aged adults in Malaysia

Objective:To investigate the interrelationship between cardiovascular health awareness,risk perception,behavioural intention,and INTERHEART risk stratification in a middle-aged adult population in Malaysia.Methods:A cross-sectional survey with convenience sampling was conducted during November 2022 and January 2023.Participants completed validated questionnaires assessing cardiovascular health awareness,risk perception of cardiovascular diseases,behavioural intention towards adopting healthy habits,and INTERHEART risk stratification score(IHRS)based on established risk factors.A total of 602 respondents were included in the final analysis.Data were analysed with independent t-test/one-way ANOVA or Mann-Whitney/Kruskal-Wallis to test the differences,Pearson correlation or linear regression test to analyze the association of independent and dependent variables.Results:There was a significant positive correlation between medical knowledge related to cardiovascular disease(CVD)and knowledge related to CVD risk prevention,risk perception,behavioural intention and IHRS(P<0.05,Pearson correlation).Notably,individuals with higher IHRS tended to have lower knowledge related to CVD and CVD risk prevention,risk perception,and behavioural intention.Males,laborers,active/former smokers,individuals with lower household income and educational levels,those involved in occupations not related to the healthcare sector,and those who did not receive the CVD health brochure or are unaware of health self-assessment tools are likely to have lower levels of knowledge,risk perception,and poorer behavioural intention regarding cardiovascular health(P<0.05,one-way ANOVA).While educational level,smoking status,awareness about CVD poster,self-assessment tools were repeatedly significantly associated with knowledge related to CVD and CVD risk prevention,risk perception,behavioral intention and/or IHRS(P<0.05,linear regression).Conclusions:These findings underscore the importance of promoting cardiovascular health awareness and risk perception

With a growing population,changes in consumerism behavior and trends in consumption in Indo-Pacific Asia,our seafood processing and consumption practices produce a large volume of waste products.There are several advantages in regulating and sustaining shellfish processing industries.The major advantage of waste management is that it leads to better conservation of natural resources in the long run.Shrimp shell waste contains useful biomaterials,which are still untapped due to inadequate waste disposal and solid waste management.Chitin,the major component of shell waste,can be extracted either chemically or biologically.The chemical extraction approaches,which use acids and alkali,could be an environmental burden.On the other hand,biological methods can be eco-friendly alternatives for shell waste management.In this review,recent trends in management of shellfish waste as sources of chitin,conversion of chitin into chitosan,economic aspects of waste treatment and application of chitosan will be discussed.

Outcomes of a non-randomised audit of single pigtail suture stents in urolithiasis management of Asian patients in Singapore

Objective:Double-J(DJ)ureteric stents are commonly placed perioperatively for semirigid or flexible ureteroscopic renal surgery.It is believed that lesser stent material within the bladder mitigates stent-related symptoms.This study aimed to evaluate the J-Fil ureteral stent,a single pigtail suture stent compared with conventional DJ stent in relation to stent symptoms in an Asian population undergoing ureterorenal intervention.Methods:Based on internal audit committee recommendation approval,the records of 50 patients retrieved,available data of 41 patients who were prospectively enrolled into two groups(Group 1[J-Fil stent group],n=21 and Group 2[DJ stent group],n=20)between August 2020 to January 2021,were analysed.Parameters compared were nature of procedure,stone location and size,ease of deployment or removal,and complications.A modified universal stent symptom questionnaire was used to assess morbidity of stent symptoms within 48 h of insertion and at removal.Results:Both groups had similar median age,distribution in male to female ratio,and stone size.The overall median universal stent symptom questionnaire score at insertion was similar for bladder pain,flank or loin pain,and quality of life between Group 1 and 2;however,at removal Group 1 fared significantly better than Group 2,especially for flank or loin pain and pain at voiding.Both groups had similar ease in insertion with no hospital readmissions.Conclusion:Our audit favoured the single pigtail suture stent in Asian ureters in mitigating stent-related issues.It showed a good safety profile with easy deployment and removal.It promises a new standard in stenting.

Kinetic Study for Adsorption of Heavy Metals on Zeolite

Heavy metals⁃polluted water has negative impact on the ecosystem.In Malaysia,minimum discharge limit for Cu^(2+)and Zn^(2+)are 1 mg/L and 2 mg/L,respectively.Zeolite is a highly porous adsorbent and its performance is affected by various factors,including contact time and pH.Thus,the objective of this study is to identify an ideal operating condition to treat Cu^(2+)and Zn^(2+)solutions up to the allowable discharge limit,by considering the pH and contact time factors.Six kinetic models were studied to identify the adsorption mechanism of the heavy metal removal process.Single solute batch adsorption experiment was conducted within pH 3-11 from 30 to 150 min.Results showed that hydration enthalpy(ΔHhyd)governed the selectivity of heavy metals,where a maximum of 90.87%Zn^(2+)(ΔH_(hyd)=-1955 kJ/mol)and 82.15%Cu^(2+)(ΔH_(hyd)=-2010 kJ/mol)removals were found at pH≥7.Without pH adjustment,selectivity towards Cu^(2+)was higher compared with Zn^(2+)due to the size of hydration radii,where Cu^(2+)is 0.11Åsmaller than Zn^(2+).By considering both pH and contact time factors,this study shows that by adjusting the pH of Zn^(2+)solutions to a minimum pH value of 7,the contact time required to achieve maximum Zn^(2+)removal rate was 90%,which can be achieved within 60 min.Meanwhile,zeolite performed better in Cu^(2+)removal without any pH adjustment where a maximum of 94%was achieved at 120 min.Final concentration of 0.523 mg/L Cu^(2+)and 0.981 mg/L Zn^(2+)were obtained in this study.Kinetic study showed that Ritchie’s equation predicted Cu^(2+)adsorption the best,while Zn^(2+)adsorption could be represented by Elovich model.This suggested that the adsorption on the activate site governed Cu^(2+)and Zn^(2+)removal process.Hence,future work should focus on modifying zeolite surface to improve the adsorptive performance.

With the advent of rapid automated in silico identification of biosynthetic gene clusters(BGCs),genomics pre-sents vast opportunities to accelerate natural product(NP)discovery.However,prolific NP producers,Strepto-myces,are exceptionally GC-rich(>80%)and highly repetitive within BGCs.These pose challenges in sequencing and high-quality genome assembly which are currently circumvented via intensive sequencing.Here,we outline a more cost-effective workflow using multiplex Illumina and Oxford Nanopore sequencing with hybrid long-short read assembly algorithms to generate high quality genomes.Our protocol involves subjecting long read-derived assemblies to up to 4 rounds of polishing with short reads to yield accurate BGC predictions.We successfully sequenced and assembled 8 GC-rich Streptomyces genomes whose lengths range from 7.1 to 12.1 Mb with a median N50 of 8.2 Mb.Taxonomic analysis revealed previous misrepresentation among these strains and allowed us to propose a potentially new species,Streptomyces sydneybrenneri.Further comprehensive characterization of their biosynthetic,pan-genomic and antibiotic resistance features especially for molecules derived from type I polyketide synthase(PKS)BGCs reflected their potential as alternative NP hosts.Thus,the genome assemblies and insights presented here are envisioned to serve as gateway for the scientific community to expand their avenues in NP discovery.

The rising production of produced water from oilfields had been proven to bring detrimental environmental effects.In this study,an efficient,recyclable,and environmental-friendly reduced graphene oxide immobilizedκ-Carrageenan hydrogel composite(κCaGO)was fabricated as an alternative sorbent for crude oil-in-water demulsification.Polyethyleneimine(PEI)was employed to form a stable hydrogel composite.The conditions for the immobilization of graphene oxide(GO)on PEI-modifiedκ-Carrageenan(κC)beads were optimized appropriately.An immobilization yield of 77%was attained at 2%PEI,2 h immobilization activation time,and pH 6.5.Moreover,the synthesizedκCaGO is capable of demulsification with an average demulsification efficiency of 70%.It was found that the demulsification efficiency increases with salinity andκCaGO dosage,and it deteriorates under alkaline condition.These phenomena can be attributed to the interfacial interactions betweenκCaGO and the emulsion.Furthermore,theκCaGO can be recycled to use for up to six cycles without significant leaching and degradation.As such,the synthesizedκCaGO could be further developed as a potential sorbent substitute for the separation of crude oil from produced water.

1 Background Nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC)arises from the epithelial cells that cover and line the nasopharynx.While it is considered a rare cancer globally,it is commonly observed in South China and a few other ethnically distinct racial groups.Due to its propensity to spread early through the submucosal tissue and the highly infiltrative nature of this disease,NPC spreads easily through areas of lesser resistance within the pharyngobasilar fascia with a tendency for neural infiltration[1-3].

Objective:To explore the anti-cancer activity of maslinic acid against colorectal cancer(CRC)cell lines and its possible mechanism.Methods:The inhibitory effect of maslinic acid was screened against five CRC cell lines(HT-29,HCT 116,SW480,SW48,and LS 174 T)via 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay.Apoptosis and cell cycle analyses were carried out using annexinⅤ-FITC/propidium iodide staining and propidium iodide staining,respectively and subjected to fluorescence-activated cell sorting analysis.Protein expression studies of inhibitor ofκB kinase-β(IKK-β),checkpoint kinase 1(Chk1)and cyclin D1 were conducted using the JESS system.Results:Maslinic acid exhibited growth inhibitory effect in a doseand time-dependent manner in HT-29 and HCT 116 cell lines.A more prominent apoptosis induced by maslinic acid was observed in HCT 116 cell line.However,in HT-29 cell line,maslinic acid induced cell cycle arrest by inhibiting the G1-S transition,which was accompanied by the downregulation of cyclin D1.The expression of unphosphorylated IKK-βprotein was increased in both(HT-29 and HCT 116)cell lines after maslinic acid treatment.Conclusions:Maslinic acid inhibits the growth of HT-29 and HCT 116 cells in a different manner,induces cell cycle arrest in HT-29 cells and causes apoptosis in HCT 116 cells partially via NF-κB pathway inhibition.
