The effects of Roundup WeatherMax® and EngameTM formulations of glyphosate were investigated on the cotyledons of glyphosate resistant (GR) and glyphosate sensitive (GS) isogenic cotton cultivars. EngameTM is a mixture of glyphosate and 1-aminomethanamide dihydrogen tetraoxosulfate (AMADS). Fully expanded cotton cotyledons treated with EngameTM or AMADS developed surface lesions within 2 hours after treatment whereas surfactant-treated control or WeatherMax®-treated tissues did not develop lesions. The EngameTM and AMADS damage appeared as depressions which were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. Light micrographs of cross sections through the depressions revealed collapsed and compressed epidermal and mesophyll cells with congealed cytoplasmic contents in the palisade and spongy mesophyll cells. Changes to photosynthetic electron transport were evident at 4 hours after treatment (HAT) in all treatments as revealed by chlorophyll A fluorescence. In order to prepare high toughness(Ti,Zr,Nb,Ta,Mo)C ceramics at low temperatures while maintaining high hardness,a liquid-phase sintering process combined with Co-based liquid-phase extrusion strategy was adopted in this *** densification temperature can be lowered to 1350℃,which is much lower than the solid-state sintering temperature(~2000℃)generally employed for high-entropy carbide *** sintered at 1550℃and 30 MPa applied pressure,part of the Co-based liquid-phase was squeezed out of the graphite mold,such that only~3.21 vol%of Co remained in the high-entropy *** to the Co-free solid-state sintered(Ti,Zr,Nb,Ta,Mo)C ceramics,prepared at 2000℃and 35 MPa,the hardness was slightly decreased from 25.06±0.32 to 24.11±0.75 GPa,but the toughness was increased from 2.25±0.22 to 4.07±0.13 MPa·m^(1/2).This work provides a new strategy for low-temperature densification of high-entropy carbides with both high hardness and high toughness.

Central nervous system (CNS) inj.ry initializes a reactive tissue response, which is characterized by a cascade of signals that result in inflammatory cytokine release and neuroinflammation. These signals are induced in part by activated microglia that migrates to the inj.ry site in an attempt to remove dead tissue and promote healing. The ability to control the reactive tissue response is of significant importance to a variety of applications, such as neuroprostheses, whose functional lifespan is limited by glial cell activation. A possible strategy to mitigate glial cell activation is to reduce the release of inflammatory cytokines following a brain inj.ry. One pathway that facilitates inflammatory cytokine release is the mitogen-activated protein kinase-activated protein kinase 2 (MK2) pathway, which increases cytokine mRNA synthesis, stability and translation following activation. Therefore, inhibiting MK2-mediated cytokine release can reduce microglial activationfollowing CNS inj.ry. Through?in vitro?studies, we demonstrate the ability of a cell-penetrating peptide inhibitor of MK2 (MK2i) to reduce MK2-mediated cytokine release in mixed cortical cultures.?Immunocytochemistry, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and cytotoxicity assays in 7- -10-day-old E17 Sprague-Dawley rat mixed cortical cultures showed that MK2i treatment significantly lowered inflammatory cytokine production and increased cortical cell viability following?glial cell activation with tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Results suggest that MK2i may reduce damage caused by activated glia in the inflamed CNS.

Aqueous synthesis is a green but challenging pathway to produce cadmium-free,bright,and near-infrared(NIR)emitting quantum dots(QDs).Herein,we develop a straightforward aqueous phase approach to prepare Zn-Cu-In-Se QDs with tunable emission from 630 to 800 nm through varying the molar ratio of Zn and *** ultrasmall nanoparticle size remains nearly fixed(~2.6 nm)when the QD composition is varied,allowing for the effects of composition on the optical properties of QDs to be decoupled from the impact of particle *** leveraging the off-stoichiometric effect on photoluminescence(PL),Zn-Cu-In-Se QDs with a Zn:Cu molar ratio of 1.0 show a long PL decay lifetime of 211 ns and an absolute photoluminescence quantum yield(PLQY)of 14.2%.The PLQY is further enhanced by overcoating a ZnS shell,reaching up to 25.8%.Based on the bright,biocompatible,and emission-tunable QDs,nanoprobes with targeting capability for multiple tumor markers are further constructed and employed to simultaneously ascertain targets in the cytoplasm and cell *** study provides a green and effective strategy for achieving bright and biocompatible NIR quantum dots for multiplexed biodetection applications.
