Prevalence of-and risk factors for work disability in Dutch patients with inflammatory bowel disease

AIM To determine the prevalence of work disability in inflammatory bowel disease(IBD), and to assess risk factors associated with work disability.METHODS For this retrospective cohort study, we retrieved clinical data from the Dutch IBD Biobank on July 2014, containing electronic patient records of 3388 IBD patients treated in the eight University Medical Centers in the Netherlands. Prevalence of work disability was assessed in 2794 IBD patients and compared with the general Dutch population. Multivariate analyses were performed for work disability(sick leave, partial and full disability) and long-term full work disability(> 80% work disability for > 2 years).RESULTS Prevalence of work disability was higher in Crohn's disease(CD)(29%) and ulcerative colitis(UC)(19%) patients compared to the general Dutch population(7%). In all IBD patients, female sex, a lower education level, and extra-intestinal manifestations, were associated with work disability. In CD patients, an age > 40 years at diagnosis, disease duration > 15 years,smoking, surgical interventions, and anti-TNFα use were associated with work disability. In UC patients, an age > 55 years, and immunomodulator use were associated with work disability. In CD patients, a lower education level(OR = 1.62, 95%CI: 1.02-2.58), and in UC patients, disease complications(OR = 3.39, 95%CI: 1.09-10.58) were associated with long-term full work disability.CONCLUSION The prevalence of work disability in IBD patients is higher than in the general Dutch population. Early assessment of risk factors for work disability is necessary, as work disability is substantial among IBD patients.

The landscape of safety management systems research: A scientometric analysis

Safety management systems(SMSs)are widely applied across many industrial sectors,and a large body of liter-ature has been published addressing their design,implementation,effectiveness,and associated challenges.This article presents a high-level analysis of the SMS research domain,guided by a set of questions addressing the contents,structure,and evolution the research domain,its dominant themes and focus topics,the key scientific domains and journals contributing to its development,and the key publications serving as an intellectual basis for SMS related research.The results show a rapidly increasing volume of research outputs and a shift from re-search based in North America and Europe to Asia and Australia.There is only a limited number of institutions enduringly contributing to the field,and there are relatively few stable research collaborations,with the number of Chinese institutions publishing SMS related research fast expanding in recent years.The domain is strongly interdisciplinary and embedded in applied domains of science,with industrial engineering the most contribut-ing category,as well as categories focusing on the industrial application domains.A temporal evolution of the research activity in different application domains is apparent,with an initial focus on occupational health and safety,followed by process safety,patient safety,food safety,and construction safety.SMS research has a strong relation to safety culture and safety climate research,and while safety and risk management concepts and theo-ries form an important knowledge base for most application domains,the dominant views on accident causation differ between these.Research on SMS in the food industry is relatively separated from the other application domains.Based on the findings,various future research directions are discussed.

Human salivary histatin 1(Hst1)exhibits a series of cell-activating properties,such as promoting cell spreading,migration,and metabolic activity.We recently have shown that fluorescently labeled Hst1(F-Hst1)targets and activates mitochondria,presenting an important molecular mechanism.However,its regulating signaling pathways remain to be elucidated.We investigated the influence of specific inhibitors of G protein-coupled receptors(GPCR),endocytosis pathways,extracellular signal-regulated kinases1/2(ERK1/2)signaling,p38 signaling,mitochondrial respiration and Na+/K+-ATPase activity on the uptake,mitochondria-targeting and-activating properties of F-Hst1.We performed a si RNA knockdown(KD)to assess the effect of Sigma-2 receptor(S2R)/Transmembrane Protein 97(TMEM97)—a recently identified target protein of Hst1.We also adopted live cell imaging to monitor the whole intracellular trafficking process of F-Hst1.Our results showed that the inhibition of cellular respiration hindered the internalization of F-Hst1.The inhibitors of GPCR,ERK1/2,phagocytosis,and clathrin-mediated endocytosis(CME)as well as siRNA KD of S2R/TMEM97 significantly reduced the uptake,which was accompanied by the nullification of the promoting effect of F-Hst1 on cell metabolic activity.Only the inhibitor of CME and KD of S2R/TMEM97 significantly compromised the mitochondria-targeting of Hst1.We further showed the intracellular trafficking and targeting process of F-Hst1,in which early endosome plays an important role.Overall,phagocytosis,CME,GPCR,ERK signaling,and S2R/TMEM97 are involved in the internalization of Hst1,while only CME and S2R/TMEM97 are critical for its subcellular targeting.The inhibition of either internalization or mitochondria-targeting of Hst1 could significantly compromise its mitochondria-activating property.

Collaboration networks evolution of Safety Science from 1976 to 2019

There is a recent interest to understand the nature of the safety science discipline and to obtain insights in its development patterns and research trends.This article analyzes the evolution of the prevalence and scale of collaborative publishing and the macro-level collaboration scale of the Safety Science research community.Additionally,an analysis of the evolution of influential research topics of the core researchers’collaboration networks provides insights in the domain’s high-level development trends.Both the prevalence and scale of scientific collaboration are found to have increased dramatically since the inception of Journal of Occupational Accidents,Safety Science’s predecessor.Research networks have grown significantly,and collaboration between core researchers has steadily increased.Even though this indicates that a core safety science research community has developed,it is also found that the journal continues to serve as a platform for many small and unconnected author clusters.In terms of influential research topics,there is a notable shift from technical aspects of work safety towards psychological and organizational mechanisms of safety.More recently,influential work of core research networks has additionally focused on safety and risk models and methods,the conceptual and theoretical foundations of the domain,and influential research clusters have formed around safety in specific industries.The focus topics of core researcher’s collaboration clusters furthermore highlight the variety of conceptual,theoretical,and methodological approaches co-existing within Safety Science.Various implications of the findings are discussed,where both possible benefits and drawbacks of increased collaboration are highlighted and future research avenues outlined.

t Social insects have evolved colony behavioral, physiological, and organiza. tional adaptations (social immunity) to reduce the risks of parasitization and/or disease transmission. The collection of resin from various plants and its use in the hive as propolis is a clear example of behavioral defense. For Apis mellifera, an increased propolis content in the hive may correspond to variations in the microbial load of the colony and to a downregulation of an individual bee's immune response. However, many aspects of such antimicrobial mechanism still need to be clarified. Assuming that bacterial and fungal infection mechanisms differ from the action of a parasite, we studied the resin collection dynamics in Varroa destructor-infested honeybee colonies. Comparative experiments involving hives with different mite infestation levels were conducted in order to assess the amount of resin collected and propolis quality within the hive, over a 2-year period (2014 and 2015). Our study demonstrates that when A. mellifera colonies are under stress because of Varroa infestation, an increase in the number of resin foragers is recorded, even if a general intensification of the foraging activity is not observed. A reduction in the total polyphenolic content in propolis produced in infested versus uninfested hives was also noticed. Considering that different propolis types show varying levels of inhibition against a variety of honey bee pathogens in vitro, it would be very important to study the effects against Varroa of two diverse types of propolis: from Varroa-free and from Varroa-infested hives.

Ensuring the removal of host cell proteins(HCPs) during downstream processing of recombinant proteins such as monoclonal antibodies(m Abs) remains a challenge.Since residual HCPs might affect product stability or safety,constant monitoring is required to demonstrate their removal to be below the regulatory accepted level of 100 ng/mg.The current standard analytical approach for this procedure is based on ELISA;however,this approach only measures the overall HCP content.Therefore,the use of orthogonal methods,such as liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry(LC-MS),has been established,as it facilitates the quantitation of total HCPs as well as the identification and quantitation of the individual HCPs present.In the present study,a workflow for HCP detection and quantitation using an automated magnetic bead-based sample preparation,in combination with a data-independent acquisition(DIA) LC-MS analysis,was established.Employing the same instrumental setup commonly used for peptide mapping analysis of m Abs allows for its quick and easy implementation into pre-existing workflows,avoiding the need for dedicated instrumentation or personnel.Thereby,quantitation of HCPs over a broad dynamic range was enabled to allow monitoring of problematic HCPs or to track changes upon altered bioprocessing conditions.

Integrating local knowledge and scientific information can aid in co-developing locally relevant approaches for climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction.Communities along the Mekong River have adapted to variability in temperature,rainfall,and flooding patterns over time.Rapid environmental change in the Mekong Basin presents a new set of challenges related to drought,altered seasonal rainfall,more frequent high-flow flood events,and water withdrawals for hydropower and irrigation.We present a multi-method approach to understand how local knowledge of the spatial and temporalpatterns of floods,droughts,and rainfall can be integrated with scientific information along a flood-prone section of the lower Mekong River in Kratie Province,Cambodia.Participatory hazard mapping of community members’knowledge of the movement of floodwaters through the landscape enabled interpretation of flood extent mapping using Synthetic Aperture Radar images from the Sentinel-1A satellite.Seasonal calendars of weather patterns and livelihood activities,together with local indicators of flooding,rainfall,and drought were compared with trends in 35 years of rainfall data,and highlighted"pressure points"at the beginning and end of the rainy season where agriculture may be particularly impacted by climate change.We discuss potential applications of our findings for adaptation and hazard planning.

Efficient and sustainable V-catalyzed oxidative desulfurization of fuels assisted by ionic liquids

Fuel desulfurization is an appealing topic for the chemical industry since severe environmental regulations regarding SO_2 emissions have been legislated in many countries. In order to reduce the amount of sulfur-containing compounds in fuels,responsible for high SO_x emission levels,a green chemistry approach is compulsory. In this paper,vanadium salen and salophen complexes were used in the oxidation of a model aromatic sulfide,such as dibenzothiophene( DBT),in the presence of H_2O_2 as green oxidant. The oxidative process was successfully coupled with the extraction of the oxidized compounds by ionic liquids. The system resulted highly selective for sulfide oxidation,showing poor reactivity toward the oxidation of alkenes and allowing a significant reduction of S content in a model benzine. To note,the use of microwave in place of standard heating allowed to obtain 98% of DBT oxidation and almost complete sulfur extraction in the model fuel in 1000 s. For these reasons,this system was considered an easy,rapid and clean process to achieve fuel desulfurization.

Numeric Solution of the Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov Equation

The solution of an n-dimensional stochastic differential equation driven by Gaussian white noises is a Markov vector. In this way, the transition joint probability density function (JPDF) of this vector is given by a deterministic parabolic partial differential equation, the so-called Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov (FPK) equation. There exist few exact solutions of this equation so that the analyst must resort to approximate or numerical procedures. The finite element method (FE) is among the latter, and is reviewed in this paper. Suitable computer codes are written for the two fundamental versions of the FE method, the Bubnov-Galerkin and the Petrov-Galerkin method. In order to reduce the computational effort, which is to reduce the number of nodal points, the following refinements to the method are proposed: 1) exponential (Gaussian) weighting functions different from the shape functions are tested;2) quadratic and cubic splines are used to interpolate the nodal values that are known in a limited number of points. In the applications, the transient state is studied for first order systems only, while for second order systems, the steady-state JPDF is determined, and it is compared with exact solutions or with simulative solutions: a very good agreement is found.

On the Effects of Different Interpretations of Stochastic Differential Equations

This paper addresses the problem of the interpretation of the stochastic differential equations (SDE). Even if from a theoretical point of view, there are infinite ways of interpreting them, in practice only Stratonovich’s and Itô’s interpretations and the kinetic form are important. Restricting the attention to the first two, they give rise to two different Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov equations for the transition probability density function (PDF) of the solution. According to Stratonovich’s interpretation, there is one more term in the drift, which is not present in the physical equation, the so-called spurious drift. This term is not present in Itô’s interpretation so that the transition PDF’s of the two interpretations are different. Several examples are shown in which the two solutions are strongly different. Thus, caution is needed when a physical phenomenon is modelled by a SDE. However, the meaning of the spurious drift remains unclear.
