The role of polysulfide-saturation in electrolytes for high power applications of real world Li-S pouch cells

The lithium-sulfur(Li-S)technology is the most promising candidate for next-generation batteries due to its high theoretical specific energy and steady progress for applications requiring lightweight batteries such as aviation or heavy electric *** these applications,however,the rate capability of Li-S cells requires significant *** electrolyte formulations in Li-S batteries enable new pathways for cell development and adjustment of all ***,their rate capability at pouch cell level is often neither evaluated nor compared to state of the art(SOTA)LiTFSI/dimethoxyethane/dioxolane(LITFSI:lithium-bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide)***,the combination of the sparingly polysulfide(PS)solvating hexylmethylether/1,2-dimethoxyethane(HME/DME)electrolyte and highly conductive carbon nanotube Buckypaper(CNT-BP)with low porosity was evaluated in both coin and pouch cells and compared to dimethoxyethane/dioxolane reference *** advanced sulfur transfer melt infiltration was employed for cathode production with *** Li+ion coordination in the HME/DME electrolyte was investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)and Raman ***,ionic conductivity and viscosity was investigated for the pristine electrolyte and a polysulfide-statured *** electrolytes,DME/DOL-1/1(DOL:1,3-dioxolane)and HME/DME-8/2,are then combined with CNT-BP and transferred to multi-layered pouch *** study reveals that the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte increases drastically over state of(dis)charge especially for DME/DOL electrolyte and lean electrolyte regime leading to a better rate capability for the sparingly polysulfide solvating *** evaluation in prototype cells is an important step towards bespoke adaption of Li-S batteries for practical applications.

Fluidized bed opposed jet mills are capable of meeting the continuously growing dema nd for contamination-free fine *** this type of jet mill,the solid material is entrained and accelerated by expanding gas jets that are focused onto a focal point in side a fluidized *** resulting particle collisions induce *** process is affected by the relative particle velocities and the number of particle-particle ***,both quantities are ***,to date,neither relative particle velocities nor collision frequencies in such units have been *** present work introduces an innovative method to assess the stressing conditions in jet mills *** this end,mixtures of glass and ductile metal microspheres were used,with the latter employed in small ***-particle collisions between the aluminum and glass spheres lead to the formation of dents on the *** size and number of these dents are associated with the individual collision velocities and overall collision *** correlation between dent size and collision velocity was obtained from finite element calculations based on empirical *** proposed approach was validated using particle image velocimetry during secondary gas injection into a fluidized bed *** this case the effect of the distance between two opposed nozzles was *** a lab-scaled fluidized bed opposed jet mill the effects of gas pressure and hold-up were *** particle velocities were found to be sign ificantly lower tha n the gas velocities,while the nu mber of contacts per particle was determined to be extremely high.

Neurotherapeutic potential of erythropoietin after ischemic injury of the central nervous system

Erythropoietin (EPO) is one of the most successful biopharmaceuticals in history and is used for treating anemia of different origins. However, it became clear that EPO could also work in a neuroprotective, antiapoptotic, antioxidative, angiogenetic and neurotropic way. It causes stimulation of cells to delay cell apoptosis, especially in the central nervous system. In rodent models of focal cerebral ischemia, EPO showed an impressive reduction of infarct size by 30% and improvement of neurobehavioral outcome by nearly 40%. A large animal model dealing with ischemia and reperfusion of the spinal cord showed that EPO could reduce the risk of spinal cord injury significantly. In addition, some clinical studies tested whether EPO works in real live clinical settings. One of the most promising studies showed the innocuousness and improvements in follow-up, outcome scales and in infarct size, of EPO-use in humans suffering from ischemic stroke. Another study ended unfortunately in a negative outcome and an increased overall death rate in the EPO group. The most possible reason was the involvement of patients undergoing simultaneously systemic thrombolysis with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator. An experimental study on rats demonstrated that administration of EPO might exacerbate tissue plasminogen activator-induced brain hemorrhage without reducing the ischemic brain damage. This case shows clearly how useful animal models can be to check negative side effects of a treatment before going into clinical trials. Other groups looked in human trials at the effects of EPO on the outcome after ischemic stroke, relation to circulating endothelial progerdtor cells, aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, traumatic brain injury, hemoglobin transfusion thresholds and elective first-time coronary artery bypass surgery. Forecasting the spatial and temporal charging demand of fully electrified urban private car transportation based on large-scale traffic simulation

To support power grid operators to detect and evaluate potential power grid congestions due to the electrification of urban private cars,accurate models are needed to determine the charging energy and power demand of battery electric vehicles(BEVs)with high spatial and temporal ***,e-mobility traffic simulations are used for this *** particular,activity-based mobility models are used because they individually model the activity and travel patterns of each person in the considered geographical *** addition to inaccuracies in determining the spatial distribution of BEV charging demand,one main limitation of the activity-based models proposed in the literature is that they rely on data describing traffic flow in the considered ***,these data are not available for most places in the ***,this paper proposes a novel approach to develop an activity-based model that overcomes the spatial limitations and does not require traffic flow data as an input ***,a route assignment procedure assigns a destination to each BEV trip based on the evaluation of all possible *** basis of this evaluation is the travel distance and speed between the origin of the trip and the destination,as well as the car-access attractiveness and the availability of parking spots at the *** applicability of this model is demonstrated for the urban area of Berlin,Germany,and its 448 *** each district in Berlin,both the required daily BEV charging energy demand and the power demand are *** addition,the load shifting potential is investigated for an exemplary *** results show that peak power demand can be reduced by up to 31.7%in comparison to uncontrolled charging.

In many animals,catabolic and anabolic periods are temporally *** birds alternate energy expenditure during flight with energy accumulation during *** size of the energy stores at stopover affects the decision to resume migration and thus the temporal organization of *** now provide data suggesting that it is not only the size of the energy stores per se that may influence migration scheduling,but also the physiological consequences of *** two subspecies of the northern wheatear Oenanthe oenanthe,a long-distance migrant,estimated energy stores at a stopover during autumn migration were positively related with both constitutive innate and acquired immune function,and negatively related with oxidative damage to *** other words,migrants'physiological condition was associated with their energetic *** time spent at stopover before sampling may have contributed to this relationship,our results suggest that migrants have to trade-off the depletion of energy stores during flight with incurring physiological *** will affect migrants'decisions when to start and when to terminate a migratory *** physiological costs associated with the depletion of energy stores may also help explaining why migrants often arrive at and depart from stopover sites with larger energy stores than *** propose that studies on the role of energy stores as drivers of the temporal organization of(avian)migration need to consider physiological condition,such as immunological and oxidative states.

The valve side of the converter in the high‐voltage direct current is subjected to mixed voltages such as composite AC&DC *** this study,the effects of the homo-geneity of electric field on breakdown voltage were investigated for different�DC component amplitudes of the composite *** field efficiency factor was calcu-lated using mean and maximum field strengths for all of *** of breakdown voltage of air was examined under the composite AC&DC voltage for different ratios�*** one result of the study,the breakdown occurs at the positive half‐wave of the AC voltage despite−DC voltage being applied due to positive corona discharge *** breakdown point is named as the polarity change *** breakdown voltage increases with the decrease of DC voltage component up to polarity change point in non‐uniform electric *** less uniform electric field,the AC breakdown voltage was measured slightly higher than the DC breakdown *** less uniform electric field,as the ratio of the applied AC voltage to DC voltage increases,the breakdown voltage gradually approaches the AC breakdown *** result is similar to the result ob-tained for the+DC component in non‐uniform electric field experiments.

Insect cuticular hydrocarbons(CHCs)serve as communication signals and protect against *** form complex blends of up to 150 different *** to differences in molecular packing,CHC classes differ in melting *** is especially important in social insects like ants,which use CHCs to communicate within the colony and to recognize *** recognition models often assume a homogenous colony odor,where CHCs are collected,mixed,and redistributed in the postpharyngeal gland(PPG).Via diffusion,recognition cues should evenly spread over the body ***,CHC composition should be similar across body parts and in the *** test this,we compared CHC composition among whole-body extracts,PPG,legs,thorax,and gaster,across 17 ant species from 3 *** CHC composition differed between body parts,with consistent patterns across species and CHC ***-melting CHC classes were most abundant in the *** contrast,whole body,gaster,thorax,and legs had increasing proportions of CHC classes with higher melting *** CHC variation was highest for rather solid,late-melting CHC classes,suggesting that CHCs differ in their diffusion rates across the body *** results show that body parts strongly differ in CHC composition,either being rich in rather solid,late-melting,or rather liquid,early-melting *** implies that recognition cues are not homogenously present across the insect ***,the unequal diffusion of different CHCs represents a biophysical mechanism that enables caste differences despite continuous CHC exchange among colony members.
