Unveiling the silent crisis:global burden of suicide‑related deaths among children aged 10–14 years

Background The rise in suicides among children aged 10–14 years demands urgent attention globally.This study aims to assess the global burden of suicide-related deaths in this age group from 1990 to 2019,considering factors such as sex,geography,and sociodemographics,to inform prevention strategies and interventions.Methods The data from Global Burden of Disease 2019,encompassing 204 countries and territories,were analyzed to investigate deaths and years of life lost(YLLs)due to suicide among children aged 10–14 years.Statistical analyses,including mortality rates,YLLs,and the sociodemographic index(SDI),were conducted using standardized tools.Results In 2019,a total of 8327[95%uncertainty interval(UI)=7073–9685]children aged 10–14 years died globally due to suicide,with a mortality rate of 1.30(95%UI=1.10–1.51)per 100,000.The rates varied across countries/territories ranging between 0.05(95%UI=0.02–0.10)in South Africa and 7.49(95%UI=5.13–10.57)in Greenland.The contribution of suicide-related deaths to all-cause mortality ranged from 0.07%(95%UI=0.04%–0.15%)in South Africa to 33.02%(95%UI=24.36%–41.53%)in Greenland.Worldwide,there were approximately 636,196(95%UI=540,383–740,009)YLLs due to suicide,with a rate of 99.07(95%UI=84.15–115.23)per 100,000.The association between SDI and suicide-related deaths was evident,with higher contributions observed in countries with higher SDI.Conclusions This study reveals a concerning global burden of suicide-related deaths among children aged 10–14 years.Despite progress in reducing mortality rates,suicide remains a significant issue.While overall rates have declined,the percentage of deaths caused by suicide in this age group is increasing.

The functional significance of residual yolk in lizards

Residual yolk is assumed to be an important source of energy and nutrients during early life in nonmammalian amniotes.Available data show that the mean size of residual yolk is far smaller in lizards than in turtles,snakes,crocodiles,and birds,raising a question of whether residual yolk is of functional significance in lizards.Here,we compared data from 26 lizard species with those from other nonmammalian amniotes to test the hypothesis that residual yolk is functionally less significant in species producing more fully developed offspring.In our sample,species mean offspring water contents ranged from 73%to 84%of body wet mass;species mean proportions of carcass dry mass,fat-body dry mass,and residual yolk dry mass to offspring dry mass ranged from 84%to 99%,0%to 5.0%,and 0%to 14.4%,respectively.Lizards are,on average,more fully developed at hatching or birth than snakes,as revealed by the fact that the mean proportion of carcass dry mass to body dry mass and offspring water contents were both higher in lizards than in snakes.We conclude that the functional significance of residual yolk during early life is generally less evident in lizards.Even in the lizards where residual yolk is of potential functional significance,this portion of yolk contributes little,if any,to postembryonic growth.Future work could usefully collect data across a wider spectrum of reptile taxa to establish a precocial-altricial continuum and test the hypothesis that species with a smaller amount of residual yolk are closer to the precocial end of the continuum.

Fortification Challenges and Needs

Experience in many parts of the developing world has shown that food fortification offers a cost_effective and sustainable solution to the problem of micronutrient malnutrition. Building on the advances in science and technology and backed by studies on the economic benefits of fortification programs, governments and industry are beginning to respond positively to the call of nutrition advocates to adopt fortification as a long_term strategy. On the other hand, formidable challenges still remain in many countries in Asia, constraining the widespread adoption of this strategy. The science and technology community needs to provide adequate scientific and technological information as basis for planning and decision making. The government faces the challenge of providing the enabling environment for all stakeholders to cooperate in the fortification effort. Industry faces the challenge of adapting its production system to the requirements of fortification in order that they can contribute to social objectives while pursuing their economic objectives. The international and bilateral aid agencies need to seek tried and innovative ways to support the multiple players of food fortification, as these players in turn face the challenges that confront them.

Sport participation and vigilance in children:Influence of different sport expertise

Purpose: The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between different types of sport expertise(externally-paced vs. self-paced sports) and vigilance performance in children by evaluating the cardiovascular fitness level of the participants.Methods: Three groups of children(11.0 § 0.2 years) differentiated in terms of their regular sport participation(football players, n = 20; track and field athletes, n = 20; non-athletic controls, n = 20) took part in the study. In one session, participants performed the Leger Multi-stage fitness test to estimate their aerobic fitness level. In another session, participants completed the Psychomotor Vigilance Task(PVT) to evaluate their vigilance performance under 2 conditions of velocity demands(normal vs. speed).Results: The results revealed that both groups of sport practitioners had higher cardiovascular fitness than non-athlete controls. In contrast, no significant differences in the performance PVT were found between track and field athletes and controls. Crucially, football players showed better performance in the PVT than track and field athletes and controls. These between-group differences were not modulated by the speed demands of the task.Conclusion: The major novel finding of this research points to a positive relationship between sport participation and vigilance performance during childhood. We discuss our results in terms of the different hypotheses put forward in the literature to explain the relationship between regular exercise and cognitive functioning: the "cardiovascular fitness" and the "cognitive component skills" hypotheses.

The movement dynamics of autotomized lizards and their tails reveal functional costs of caudal autotomy

Autotomy has evolved independently several times in different animal lineages.It frequently involves immediate functional costs,so regeneration evolved in many instances to restore the functionality of that body part.Caudal autotomy is a widespread antipredator strategy in lizards,although it may affect energy storage,locomotion dynamics,or survival in future encounters with predators.Here,we assessed the effect of tail loss on the locomotor performance of wall lizards(Podarcis muralis),as well as the recovery of locomotor functionality of lizards with regenerated tails,and the movement dynamics of shed tails that were either intact or having regenerated portions.Tail loss had no effect on locomotion over unhindered spaces,possibly due to compensation between a negative effect on the stride of front limbs,and a positive effect of losing mass and friction force.We found a clear negative impact of tail loss on locomotion in spaces with interspersed obstacles,in which tailed lizards jumped larger distances when leaving the obstacles.Besides,lizards that used the tail to push off the ground were able to approach the obstacles from further,so that the tail seemed to be useful when used during jumping.Regeneration fully restores lizard’s locomotor capacities,but tail antipredator value,as indicated by the intensity of post-autotomic movements,is only partially retrieved.From these results,we propose that,together with the recovery of post-autotomy antipredator capacities,the restoration of the organismal locomotor performance may have been an important,yet frequently neglected factor in the evolution of lizard’s regeneration ability.

Enhanced Ferromagnetism in ZnO Nanoribbons and Clusters Passivated with Sulfur

Inspired by recent experimental results,the electronic and magnetic properties of sulfur-passivated ZnO clusters and zigzag nanoribbons have been studied using fi rst principles calculations in the framework of the local spin density approximation.In the case of the ZnO nanoribbons,the sulfur atoms or thiol groups were attached in different ways to the zinc or oxygen atoms located at the edges,whereas in clusters,the sulfur atoms were set on the surface,mainly interacting with atoms with low-coordinate number.After an exhaustive atomic relaxation,we found that a magnetic moment emerges in zigzag nanoribbons both with and without sulfur-passivation on the edges.However,the magnitude of the magnetic moment is very sensitive to sulfur passivation.In particular,we found that when sulfur is attached to the zinc atoms in an alternating fashion along the ribbon edges,the magnetic moment is a maximum(1.4μB/unit cell).In the case of clusters,we found that the Zn_(15)O_(15) cluster exhibits a high spin moment of 5.5μB when capped with sulfur atoms.Our calculations indicate that sulfur-passivating of ZnO nanosystems could be responsible for recently observed ferromagnetic responses.

The liver is a complex organ that performs several functions to maintain homeostasis.These functions are modulated by calcium,a second messenger that regulates several intracellular events.In hepatocytes and cholangiocytes,which are the epithelial cell types in the liver,inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate(InsP3)receptors(ITPR)are the only intracellular calcium release channels.Three isoforms of the ITPR have been described,named type 1,type 2 and type 3.These ITPR isoforms are differentially expressed in liver cells where they regulate distinct physiological functions.Changes in the expression level of these receptors correlate with several liver diseases and hepatic dysfunctions.In this review,we highlight how the expression level,modulation,and localization of ITPR isoforms in hepatocytes and cholangiocytes play a role in hepatic homeostasis and liver pathology.

Parasites are globally widespread pathogenic organisms,which impose im portant selective forces upon their hosts.Thus,in accordance with the A djustm ent to parasite pressure hypothesis,it is expected that defenses among hosts vary relative to the selective pressure imposed by parasites.According to the latitudinal gradient in diversity,species richness and abundance of parasites peak near the equator.The uropygial gland is an im portant defensive exocrine gland against pathogens in birds.Size of the uropygial gland has been proposed to vary among species of birds because of divergent selection by pathogens on their hosts.Therefore,we should expect that bird species from the tropics should have relatively larger uropygial glands for their body size than species from higher latitudes.However,this hypothesis has not yet been explored.Here,we analyze the size of the uropygial gland of 1719 individual birds belonging to 36 bird species from 3 Neotropical(Peru)and 3 temperate areas(Spain).Relative uropygial gland volum e was 12.52%larger in bird species from the tropics than from temperate areas.This finding is consistent w ith the relative size of this defensive organ being driven by selective pressures imposed by parasites.We also explored the potential role of this gland as a means of avoiding haemosporidian infection,showing that species with large uropygial glands for their body size tend to have lower mean prevalence of haemosporidian infection,regardless o f their geographical origin.This result provides additional support for the assum ption that secretions from the uropygial gland reduce the likelihood of becoming infected with haemosporidians.
