multiple myeloma(mm)is a hematological malignancy characterized by the accumulation of immunoglobulin-secreting clonal plasma cells at the bone marrow(Bm).The interaction between mm cells and the Bm microenvironment,and specifically Bm mesenchymal stem cells(Bm-mSCs),has a key role in the pathophysiology of this *** data support the idea that Bm-mSCs not only enhance the proliferation and survival of mm cells but are also involved in the resistance of mm cells to certain drugs,aiding the progression of this hematological *** relation of mm cells with the resident Bm-mSCs is a two-way *** modulate the behavior of Bm-mSCs altering their expression profile,proliferation rate,osteogenic potential,and expression of senescence *** turn,modified Bm-mSCs can produce a set of cytokines that would modulate the Bm microenvironment to favor disease *** interaction between mm cells and Bm-mSCs can be mediated by the secretion of a variety of soluble factors and extracellular vesicles carrying microRNAs,long non-coding RNAs or other ***,the communication between these two types of cells could also involve a direct physical interaction through adhesion molecules or tunneling ***,understanding the way this communication works and developing strategies to interfere in the process,would preclude the expansion of the mm cells and might offer alternative treatments for this incurable disease.

Thermal and photoperiodic requirements of the seedling stage of three tropical forest species

Air temperature and photoperiod play an important role in the seedling development for tropical forest *** variables are sensitive to climate,and so evaluating thermal and photoperiodic effects on seedling development is fundamental,especially for climate change *** to quantify thermal time and the energy required for plants to reach a development stage include air temperature and cardinal *** photoperiod will also affect physiological reactions of a plant and thus its *** we evaluated the six thermal time methods widely used to compute thermal requirement,and identified the influence of the photoperiod from the 2015 and2016 growing seasons and 12 sowing dates in Itajubá,minas Gerais state,Brazil,on seedling development of three native tropical forest species psidium guajava L.(myrtaceae),Citharexylum myrianthum Cham.(Verbenaceae),and Bixa orellana L.(Bixaceae).The method used to quantify thermal time influenced the analytical results of seedling development;the one that considered three cardinal temperatures and compared them with the mean air temperature(method5)performed better in computing thermal *** influence of photoperiod on seedling development was inconclusive for the three species,but all three developed better in mild temperatures(between 13.3℃and 26.9℃)with a photoperiod shorter than 13 h.

Cytotoxic effect of Spirulina platensis extracts on human acute leukemia Kasumi-1 and chronic myelogenous leukemia K-562 cell lines

Objective: To evaluate the cytotoxic effects of Spirulina platensis extracts on acute leukemia Kasumi-1 and chronic leukemia K-562 cancer cell ***: Various concentrations of Spirulina platensis extracts(0.25–50.00 mg/m L)obtained with different solvents were used to treat cell lines for 72 h. For cytotoxic effect studies, cell viability test with trypan blue solution, mTT assay and microscopic cytomorphological assessment were ***: Spirulina extract obtained with 70% ethanol showed significant cytotoxicity in K562 and Kasumi-1 cell lines. With trypan blue solution, IC_(50) values were found to be4.64 mg/m L for K-562 and 3.68 mg/m L for Kusumi-1 cell lines. Spirulina aqueous extract also showed cytotoxicity with trypan blue method, at a slightly higher dose; where IC_(50) values were 12.68 mg/m L for K-562 and 2.13 mg/m L for Kusumi-1 cell lines. The IC_(50) values were found 0.40 mg/m L for K-562 and 0.31 mg/m L for Kusumi-1 cell lines for the 70% ethanol extract according to the mTT assay. Spirulina extract obtained with water also showed cytotoxicity but the dose was a little higher where IC_(50) values were15.77 mg/m L for K-562 and 9.44 mg/m L for Kusumi-1 cell lines. The effect of cytotoxicity with ethanol extract is quite comparable with that observed for cyclophosphamide, which is a chemical used as anticancer ***: The cytotoxicity exhibited by Spirulina extract to cancer cell lines might be due to the presence of phytopigments(carotenoids, chlorophyll, phycocyanin) as well as polysaccharides that were reported previously as constituents of the extract. So crude extracts of Spirulina can be used as a source to develop anticancer drugs.

Degradation of duloxetine: Identification of transformation products by UHpLC-ESI(+)-HRmS/mS,in silico toxicity and wastewater analysis

Duloxetine(DUL), an antidepressant drug, has been detected in surface water and wastewater effluents, however, there is little information on the formation of its transformation products(Tps). In this work, hydrolysis, photodegradation(UV irradiation) and chlorination experiments were performed on spiked distillated water, under controlled experimental conditions to simulate abiotic processes that can occur in the environment and wastewater treatment plants(WWTps). Eleven Tps, nine from reaction with UV light and two from chlorine contact, were formed and detected by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and nine of them had their chemical structures elucidated upon analyses of their fragmentation patterns in mS/mS spectra. The formation and degradation of the Tps were observed. The parent compound was completely degraded after30 min in photodegradation and after 24 hr in chlorination. Almost all Tps were completely degraded in the experiments. The ecotoxicity and mutagenicity of the Tps were predicted based on several in silico models and it was found that a few of these products presented more ecotoxicity than DUL itself and six Tps showed positive mutagenicity. Finally, wastewater samples were analyzed and DUL and one Tp, possibly formed by chlorination process, were detected in the effluent, which showed that WWTp not only did not remove DUL, but also formed a Tp.

Water induced decomposition of Cu3（BTC）2 （BTC= benzene-l,3,5-tricarboxylate） metal-organic framework （mOF） was studied using dynamic water vapour adsorption. Small-angle X-ray scattering, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry analyses revealed that the underlying mechanism of Cu3（BTC）2 mOF decomposition under humid streams is the interpenetration of water molecules into Cu-BTC coordination to displace organic linkers （BTC） from Cu centres.

Tree community composition,structure and diversity along an elevational gradient in an Andean forest of Northern Ecuador

The Andean forests of northern Ecuador are known for their high levels of plant diversity relative to the area they ***,these forests grow on steep slopes that lead to dramatic habitat gradients across short *** extreme habitat gradients make the Andean forest ecosystem an excellent natural laboratory for understanding the effect of elevation on forest community diversity,structure and *** established 31 plots(50 m×5 m)which are divided between two elevational transects in the cloud forest of the Siempre Verde Reserve in the western foothills of the Andes mountains of northern *** trees and tree ferns with a diameter at breast height(dbh)≥5 cm were measured and *** examined changes in community composition,structure,and diversity along and between the elevational transects and three elevational zones:low(2437–2700 m),middle(2756–3052 m),and high(3163–3334 m).We found four main trends associated with the elevational gradients at this site:(1)community composition differed between the two transects and among the three elevational zones according to N-mDS,ANOSIm,and percentage of shared species,with some species having limited distributions,(2)metrics of community structure showed opposite relationships with elevation,depending on the transect,with the only significant relationship(negative)found between basal area and elevation in the open trail transect,(3)alpha diversity,in general,peaked at mid-elevations,and(4)beta diversity consistently increased with distance between plots along *** complexity of changes in community composition,structure,and alpha diversity along elevation may be related to the heterogeneity of the environment on a local scale,such as topography,soil composition,and even human impact,or to dispersal limitation and should be investigated *** changes in community composition and the relatively high beta diversity found at this site exemplify the biological complexity of mon
