“Branched”structural transformation of the L1_(2)-Al_(3)Zr phase manipulated by Cu substitution/segregation in the Al-Cu-Zr alloy system

The effect of Cu on the evolution of the Al_(3)Zr phase in an Al-Cu-Zr cast alloy during solution treatment at 500℃has been thoroughly studied by combining atomic resolution high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy,energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and first-principles *** heat treatment initially produces a pure L1_(2)-Al_(3)Zr microstructure,allowing for about 13%Cu to be incorporated in the *** incorporation increases the energy barrier for anti-phase boundary(APB)activation,thus stabilizing the L1_(2)*** heating leads to a Cu-induced“branched”path for the L1_(2)structural transformation,with the latter process accelerated once the first APB has been *** atoms may either(i)be repelled by the APBs,promoting the transformation to a Cu-poor D0_(23) phase,or(ii)they may segregate at one Al-Zr layer adjacent to the APB,promoting a transformation to a new thermodynamically favored phase,Al4 CuZr,formed when these segregation layers are periodically *** studies suggest that the branching of the L1_(2)transformation path is linked to the speed at which an APB is created,with Cu attraction triggered by a comparatively slow *** unexpected transformation behavior of the L1_(2)-Al_(3)Zr phase opens a new path to un-derstanding,and potentially regulating the Al_(3)Zr dispersoid evolution for high temperature applications.

Safety and efficacy of Profermin~to induce remission in ulcerative colitis

AIM:To test the efficacy and safety of Profermin in inducing remission in patients with active ulcerative colitis(UC).METhODS:The study included 39 patients with mild to moderate UC defined as a Simple Clinical Colitis Activity Index(SCCAI)>4 andho were treated open-label with Profermintwice daily for 24 *** SCCAI was reported observer blinded via the ***:In an intention to treat(ITT)analysis,the mean reduction in SCCAI score was 56.5%.Of the 39 patients,24(62%)reached the primary endpoint,which was proportion of patients with≥50%reduction in *** secondary endpoint,the proportion of patients in remission defined as SCCAI≤2.5,was in ITT analysis reached in 18 of the 39 patients(46%).In a repeated-measure regression analysis,the estimated mean reduction in score was 5.0 points(95%CI:4.1-5.9,Phe estimated mean time taken to obtain half the reduction in score was 28 d(95%CI:26-30).There were no serious adverse events(AEs)or withdrawals due to *** was generally well ***:Profermin is safe and may be effective in inducing remission of active UC.

The adsorption of 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid(NDCA)molecules on the Ag(110),Cu(110),and Ag(111)surfaces at room temperature has been studied by means of scanning tunnelling microscopy(STM).Further supporting results were obtained using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy(XAS).On the Ag(110)support,which had an average terrace width of only 15 nm,the NDCA molecules form extended one-dimensional(1-D)assemblies,which are oriented perpendicular to the step edges and have lengths of several hundred *** shows that the assemblies have a large tolerance to monatomic surface steps on the Ag(110)*** observed behaviour is explained in terms of strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding and a strong surface-mediated directionality,assisted by a sufficient degree of molecular backbone *** contrast,the same kind of step-edge crossing is not observed when the molecules are adsorbed on the isotropic Ag(111)or more reactive Cu(110)*** Ag(111),similar 1-D assemblies are formed to those on Ag(110),but they are oriented along the step *** Cu(110),the carboxylic groups of NDCA are deprotonated and form covalent bonds to the surface,a situation which is also achieved on Ag(110)by annealing to 200°*** results show that the formation of particular self-assembled molecular nanostructures depends significantly on a subtle balance between the adsorbate-adsorbate and adsorbate-substrate interactions and that kinetic factors play an important role.

Type 2 diabetes is characterized by a decreased ability of insulin to facilitate glucose uptake into insulin sensitive tissue,i.e.,skeletal *** mechanism behind this is at the moment *** has been suggested that increased amount of lipids inside the skeletal muscle(intramuscular triglyceride,diacylglycerol and ceramides)will impair insulin action in skeletal muscle,but data are not consistent in the human *** has also been hypothesized that the impaired insulin sensitivity is due to a dysfunction in the mitochondria resulting in an impaired ability to oxidize lipids,but the majority of the literature is not supporting this *** it has been suggested that the production of reactive oxygen species play an essential role in skeletal muscle insulin *** is well accepted that physical activity(endurance,strength and high intensity training)improves insulin sensitivity in healthy humans and in patients with type 2 *** patients with type 2 diabetes have the same beneficial effects(same improvement)as control subjects,when it comes to regular physical activity in regard to mitochondrial function,is not established in the *** review will focus only on the effect of physical activity on skeletal muscle(mitochondrial function)in patients with type 2 diabetes.

STM Manipulation of Molecular Moulds on Metal Surfaces

Molecular Landers are a class of compounds containing an aromatic board as well as bulky side groups which upon adsorption of the molecule on a surface may lift the molecular board away from the *** molecular Landers have extensively been studied as model systems for nanomachines and the formation of molecular wires,as well as for their function as“molecular moulds”,i.e.,acting as templates by accommodating metal atoms underneath their aromatic ***,we investigate the adsorption of a novel Lander molecule 1,4-bis(4-(2,4-diaminotriazine)phenyl)-2,3,5,6-tetrakis(4-tert-butylphenyl)benzene(DAT,C_(64)h_(68)N_(10))on Cu(110)and Au(111)surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum(UhV)*** means of scanning tunneling microscopy(STM)imaging and manipulation,we characterize the morphology and binding geometries of DAT molecules at terraces and step *** the Cu(110)surface,various contact configurations of individual DAT Landers were formed at the step edges in a controlled manner,steered by STM manipulation,including lateral translation,rotation,and pushing molecules to an upper *** diffusion barrier of single DAT molecules on Au(111)is considerably smaller than on Cu(110).The DAT Lander is specially designed with diamino-triazine side groups making it suitable for future studies of molecular self-assembly by hydrogen-bonding *** results presented here are an important guide to the choice of substrate for future studies using this compound.

Effect of Chronic DL-Amphetamine Exposure on Brain Volume, Anxiogenic, Locomotor, and Social Behaviors in Male SD Rats

Research examining the long-term effects of drugs such as AdderallTM, a mixed DL-amphetamine, as a first-line treatment strategy for those diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADhD), is very much lacking. In order to address this, the present study sought to examine possible behavioral and neuroanatomical effects of chronic oral exposure to DL-amphetamine administered at a relatively low dose to the developing male Sprague Dawley rat. Animals were administered a mixture of chocolate drink and DL-amphetamine at a dose of 1.6 mg/kg for 36 days, beginning at PD 24 and ending at PD 60. Anxiety, a potential side effect of stimulant treatment, was assessed using three paradigms: The open field test (OF), the social interaction test (SI), and the elevated plus maze (EPM). The OF and SI were conducted using repeated testing over the course of five weeks. Testing occurred immediately after drug administration on a given day. The EPM was used only once on the penultimate day of treatment, before the drug was administered. Following drug treatment on PD 60, brain-to-body weight ratios were obtained. Results indicated that there were no group differences in brain-to-body weight ratios nor were differences in locomotor and social behaviors observed. however, rats treated with DL-amphetamine did show an anxiogenic response in the EPM. This was represented as a significant reduction in open arm entries. Overall our findings suggest that while chronic drug treatment fails to alter multiple measures of behavior, or reliable changes in brain volume, such treatment may impact a behavioral index of anxiety. Future research should seek to examine the implications of this heightened anxiogenic response in animals treated chronically with oral, low-dose DL-amphetamine.
