Effects of perinatal protein deprivation and recovery on esophageal myenteric plexus

AIm:To evaluate effects of preand postnatal protein deprivation and postnatal recovery on the myenteric plexus of the rat esophagus. mETHODS: Three groups of young Wistar rats (aged 42 d) were studied: normalfed (N42), proteindeprived (D42), and proteinrecovered (R42). The myenteric neurons of their esophagi were evaluated by histochemical reactions for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH), nitrergic neurons (NADPH)diaphorase and acetylcholinesterase (AChE), immunohistochemical reaction for vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), and ultrastructural analysis by transmission electron ***: The cytoplasms of large and medium neurons from the N42 and R42 groups were intensely reactive for NADH. Only a few large neurons from the D42 group exhibited this aspect. NADPH detected in the D42 group exhibited low reactivity. The AChE reactivity was diffuse in neurons from the D42 and R42 groups. The density of large and small varicosities detected by immunohistochemical staining of VIP was low in ganglia from the D42 group. In many neurons from the D42 group, the double membrane of the nuclear envelope and the perinuclear cisterna were not detectable. NADH and NADPH histochemistry revealed no group differences in the prof ile of nerve cell perikarya (ranging from 200 to 400 μm2).CONCLUSION: Protein deprivation causes a delay in neuronal maturation but postnatal recovery can almost completely restore the normal morphology of myenteric neurons.

Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)typically affects patients during their adolescent and young adult *** these are the reproductive years,patients and physicians often have concerns regarding the interaction between IBD,medications and surgery used to treat IBD,and reproduction,pregnancy outcomes,and neonatal *** have shown a lack of knowledge among both patients and physicians regarding reproductive issues in *** the literature is constantly expanding regarding these very issues,with this review,we provide a comprehensive,updated overview of the literature on the management of the IBD patient from conception to delivery,and provide action tips to help guide the clinician in the management of the IBD patient during pregnancy.

Google Earth(GE)has recently become the focus of increasing interest and popularity among available online virtual globes used in scientific research projects,due to the free and easily accessed satellite imagery provided with global ***,the uses of this service raises several research questions on the quality and uncertainty of spatial data(*** accuracy,precision,consistency),with implications for potential uses like data collection and *** paper aims to analyze the horizontal accuracy of very high resolution(VHR)GE images in the city of Rome(Italy)for the years 2007,2011,and *** evaluation was conducted by using both Global Positioning System ground truth data and cadastral photogrammetric vertex as independent check *** validation process includes the comparison of histograms,graph plots,tests of normality,azimuthal direction errors,and the calculation of standard statistical *** results show that GE VHR imageries of Rome have an overall positional accuracy close to 1 m,sufficient for deriving ground truth samples,measurements,and large-scale planimetric maps.

The GATK joint genotyping workflow is appropriate for calling variants in RNA-seq experiments

The Genome Analysis Toolkit(GATK) is a popular set of programs for discovering and genotyping variants from next-generation sequencing *** current GATK recommendation for RNA sequencing(RNA-seq) is to perform variant calling from individual samples,with the drawback that only variable positions are *** 3.0 and above of GATK offer the possibility of calling DNA variants on cohorts of samples using the HaplotypeCaller algorithm in Genomic Variant Call Format(GVCF) *** this approach,variants are called individually on each sample,generating one GVCF file per sample that lists genotype likelihoods and their genome *** a second step,variants are called from the GVCF files through a joint genotyping *** strategy is more flexible and reduces computational challenges in comparison to the traditional joint discovery *** a GVCF workflow for mining SNP in RNA-seq data provides substantial advantages,including reporting homozygous genotypes for the reference allele as well as missing *** advantage of RNA-seq data derived from primary macrophages isolated from 50 cows,the GATK joint genotyping method for calling variants on RNA-seq data was validated by comparing this approach to a so-called "per-sample" *** addition,pair-wise comparisons of the two methods were performed to evaluate their respective sensitivity,precision and accuracy using DNA genotypes from a companion study including the same 50 cows genotyped using either genotyping-by-sequencing or with the Bovine SNP50 Beadchip(imputed to the Bovine high density).Results indicate that both approaches are very close in their capacity of detecting reference variants and that the joint genotyping method is more sensitive than the per-sample *** that the joint genotyping method is more flexible and technically easier,we recommend this approach for variant calling in RNA-seq experiments.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic disorder affecting young adults in their reproductive years. many young women with IBD express concern about the effect their disease will have on fertility, pregnancy course and fetal development. This article presents an approach to management of IBD in the pregnant patient, including counseling and investigation, and summarizes existing data on the safety of medications used to treat IBD in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Population structuring of the ubiquitous stingless bee Tetragonisca angustula in southern Brazil as revealed by microsatellite and mitochondrial markers

Tetragonisca angustula is one of the most widespread stingless bees in the Neotropics. This species swarms frequently and is extremely successful in urban envi- ronments. In addition, it is one of the most popular stingless bee species for beekeeping in Latin America, so nest transportation and trading is common. Nest transportation can change the genetic structure of the host population, reducing inbreeding and increasing homogenization. Here, we evaluate the genetic structure of 17 geographic populations of T. angustula in southern Brazil to quantify the level of genetic differentiation between populations. Analyses were conducted on partially sequenced mitochondrial genes and 11 microsatellite loci of 1002 workers from 457 sites distributed on the mainland and on 3 islands. Our results show that T. angustula populations are highly differentiated as demon- strated by mitochondrial DNA （mtDNA） and microsatellite markers. Of 73 haplotypes, 67 were population-specific. mtDNA diversity was low in 9 populations but microsatellite diversity was moderate to high in all populations. microsatellite data suggest 10 genetic clusters and low level of gene flow throughout the studied area. However, physical barri- ers, such as rivers and mountain ranges, or the presence or absence of forest appear to be unrelated to population clusters. Factors such as low dispersal, different ecological con- ditions, and isolation by distance are most likely shaping the population structure of this species. Thus far, nest transportation has not influenced the general population structure in the studied area. However, due to the genetic structure we found, we recommend that nest transportation should only occur within and between populations that are genetically similar.

This work presents the preliminary results of the first field calibration campaign performed in the Atacama Desert,Chile,between the 18 and 22 August 2014,called the Atacama Field Campaign(ATAFIC 2014).In situ measurements were performed in order to spectrally characterize the surface reflectance spectra between 0.3 and 2.5μm,radiometric temperature(8.0–14.0μm)and atmospheric measurements.A soil sample was collected and analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and X-Ray Diffraction techniques to characterize the surface reflectance spectra and mineralogical composition,*** land surface emissivity in addition to GOES,mODIS and Landsat-8 land surface temperature(LST)were also *** showed that the spectral features of the Atacama soil and the characteristics of this geographical zone,which is featured as the most hyper-arid and cloudless place in the world,make this area a potential target for surface reflectance *** and night LST comparison between field and remote sensing data are lower than 2 K and the Root mean Square Error for land surface emissivity is close to 2%.This work opens the possibilities to consider the Atacama Desert as a reference target for calibration and validation activities for earth observation missions’purposes.

Angioedema associated with Crohn's disease:Response to biologics

A 46-year-old female patient with terminal ileum Crohn’s disease and ankylosing spondylitis presented with recurrent angioedema and urticaria. Investigations ruled out hereditary angioedema, and environmental or food allergen triggers. She was diagnosed with chronic idiopathic urticaria with angioedema, and was treated with a trial of intravenous immunoglobulin immunotherapy, danazol, prednisone and hydroxyzine. Due to ongoing bowel and arthritic complaints, she was started on infliximab infusions and within 2 treatments, she had complete resolution of the angioedema and urticaria, as well as of the bowel and arthritic symptoms. Unfortunately she developed allergic reactions to the infliximab and was switched to another anti-tumor necrosis factor （TNF）-a agent, adalimumab. Since then, she has had no further angioedema or urticaria, and her Crohn’s disease has been quiescent. This is the first known case report of chronic idiopathic urticaria with angioedema coexistent with Crohn’s disease that was successfully treated with anti-TNF-α agents.
