Epidemiology of work-related hand and wrist injuries in a referral center: A descriptive study

BACKGROUnD Occupational hand and wrist injuries(OHWIs)account for 25%of work-related accidents in low-and middle-income *** Colombia,more than 500000 occupational accidents occurred in 2021,and although the rate declined to less than 5%in 2020 and 2021,at least one in four accidents involved a hand or wrist *** To describe the OHWIs in workers seen at the emergency room at a second-level hospital in *** An observational study was performed using data from workers who experienced OHWIs and attended a second-level hospital,between June,2020 and May,*** overall frequency of OHWIs,as well as their distribution by sociodemo-graphic,clinical,and occupational variables,are ***,association patterns between sex,anatomical area(fingers,hand,wrist),and type of job were analyzed by correspondence analysis(CA).RESULTS There were 2.101 workers treated for occupational accidents,423(20.3%)were cases of OHWIs,which mainly affected men(93.9%)with a median age of 31 years and who worked mainly in mining(75.9%).OHWIs were more common in the right upper extremity(55.3%)and comprised different types of injuries,such as contusion(42.1%),laceration(27.9%),fracture(18.7%),and crush injury(15.6%).They primarily affected the phalanges(95.2%),especially those of the first finger(25.7%).The CAs showed associations between the injured anatomical area and the worker’s job that differed in men and women(explained variance>90%).COnCLUSIOn One out of five workers who suffered occupational accidents in Cundinamarca,Columbia had an OHWI,affecting mainly males employed in *** occupational profile is likely to lead to prolonged rehabilitation,and permanent functional *** results might be useful for adjusting preventive measures in cluster risk groups.

Unsteady Double Wake Model for the Simulation of Stalled Airfoils

In the present work, the recent developed Unsteady Double Wake Model, USDWM, is used to simulate separated flows past a wind turbine airfoil at high angles of attack. The solver is basically an unsteady two-dimensional panel method which uses the unsteady double wake technique to model flow separation and its dynamics. In this paper, the calculated integral forces have been successfully validated against wind tunnel measurements for the FFA-W3-211 airfoil. Furthermore, the computed highly unsteady flow field is analyzed in detail for a set of angles of attack ranging from light to deep stall conditions.

Effect of Combined Use of Brackish Water and nitrogen Fertilizer on Biomass and Sugar Yield of Sweet Sorghum

Soil salinization and non-point source pollution are among the most important and widespread environmental problems in European Mediterranean regions. Sweet sorghum （Sorghum bicolor （L.） Moench var. saccharatum） is a moderate to high salinity tolerant crop with low water and nutrient needs, seen as an alternative to grow in the water scarce regions. A three-year multifactorial study was conducted in southern Portugal to evaluate the combined effects of saline water and nitrogen application on the dry biomass （total, stems, and leaves）, sugar content （total reducing sugars and sucrose eontents） and sugar yield （here defined as the product of total reducing sugars and stems dry biomass） functions of sweet sorghum. Sorghum dry biomass and sugar yield showed diminishing returns for each incremental change of nitrogen. The use of saline irrigation waters also led to yield reduction. Exception was sucrose content which increased with increasing levels of sodium in the soil. nitrogen need decreased as the amount of sodium applied increased. Stem dry biomass, sucrose content, and sugar yield progressively increased with progress in the experiment. The effect could be attributed to the increase of the amount of irrigation applied throughout the years, thus increasing the leaching fraction which promoted salt leaching from the root zone, reduced the salinity stress, increased plant transpiration, nitrogen uptake and biomass yield.

Modelling the probability of erroneous negative lymph node staging in patients with colon cancer

Background:Patients in who with insufficient number of analysed lymph nodes(Lns)are more likely to receive an incorrect Ln *** ability to calculate the overall probability of undiagnosed Ln involvement errors in these patients could be very useful for approximating the real patient prognosis and for giving possible indications for adjuvant *** objective of this work was to establish the predictive capacity and prognostic discriminative ability of the final error probability(FEP)among patients with colon cancer and with a potentially incorrectly-staged Ln-negative ***:This was a retrospective multicentric population study carried out between January 2004 and December *** used a mathematical model based on Bayes’theorem to calculate the probability of Ln involvement given a FEP test *** sum graphs were used to calculate risk groups and the survival rates were calculated,by month,using the Kaplan-Meier ***:A total of 548 patients were analysed and classified into three risk groups according to their FEP score:low-risk(FEPntermediate-risk(FEP 2%-15%),and high-risk(FEP>15%).Patients with Ln involvement had the lowest overall survival rate when compared to the three risk *** difference was statistically significant for the low-and intermediate-risk groups(P=0.002 and P=0.004,respectively),but high-risk group presented similar survival curves to pn+group(P=0.505).In terms of disease-free survival,the high-risk group presented similar curves to the intermediate-risk group until approximately 60 months’follow-up(P=0.906).After 80 months’follow-up,the curve of high-risk group coincided with that of the pn+group(P=0.172).Finally,we summarized the FEP according to the number of analysed Lns and accompanied by a contour plot which represents its calculation ***:The application of Bayes’theorem in the calculation of FEP is useful to delimit risk subgroups from among patients without Ln i

Haloacetamides（HAMs） are cytotoxic, genotoxic, and mutagenic byproducts of drinking water disinfection. They are soft electrophilic compounds that form covalent bonds with the free thiol/thiolate in cysteine residues through an S_n2 reaction *** of the monohalogenated HAMs（iodoacetamide, IAM; bromoacetamide, BAM;or chloroacetamide, CAM） varied depending on the halogen substituent. The aim of this research was to investigate how the halogen atom affects the reactivity and toxicological properties of HAMs, measured as induction of oxidative/electrophilic stress response and genotoxicity. Additionally, we wanted to determine how well in silico estimates of electrophilic softness matched thiol/thiolate reactivity and in vitro toxicological *** of the HAMs significantly induced nuclear Rad51 accumulation and ARE signaling activity compared to a negative control. The rank order of effect was IAM 〉 BAM 〉 CAM for Rad51, and BAM ≈ IAM 〉 CAM for ARE. In general, electrophilic softness and in chemico thiol/thiolate reactivity provided a qualitative indicator of toxicity, as the softer electrophiles IAM and BAM were more thiol/thiolate reactive and were more toxic than CAM.

Method for Segmenting Tomato Plants in Uncontrolled Environments

Segmenting vegetation in color images is a complex task, especially when the background and lighting conditions of the environment are uncontrolled. This paper proposes a vegetation segmentation algorithm that combines a supervised and an unsupervised learning method to segment healthy and diseased plant images from the background. During the training stage, a Self-Organizing Map (SOM) neural network is applied to create different color groups from a set of images containing vegetation, acquired from a tomato greenhouse. The color groups are labeled as vegetation and non-vegetation and then used to create two color histogram models corresponding to vegetation and non-vegetation. In the online mode, input images are segmented by a Bayesian classifier using the two histogram models. This algorithm has provided a qualitatively better segmentation rate of images containing plants’ foliage in uncontrolled environments than the segmentation rate obtained by a color index technique, resulting in the elimination of the background and the preservation of important color information. This segmentation method will be applied in disease diagnosis of tomato plants in greenhouses as future work.

Gully erosion is a worldwide problem of land degradation and water quality,and it is also frequent in ***,anthropic influence is the major driver of gully *** study and monitor gullies it is necessary to use specific instruments and methods to obtain accurate *** objective of this study was to use Terrestrial Laser Scanning(TLS) to create digital elevation model(DEM) accurately and define morphometric variables that characterize gullies in a mountainous *** different interpolations were evaluated using the Topogrid and GridSurfaceCreate algorithms to elaborate *** profile for gullies was used to assess modeling *** DEM of the Gully 1(G1) from the Topogrid algorithm estimated soil loss of 49%,whereas the GridSurfaceCreate algorithm estimated a soil loss of97%,in a period of 1 *** estimated soil loss for the Gully 2(G2) was 14% from the Topogrid,and 8%from the GridSurfaceCreate *** GridSurfaceCreate algorithm underestimated the volume to area ratio for G2 due to a failure on interpolating a region of low point *** Topogrid algorithm represented better the terrain irregularities,as observed through the topographic profiles traced in three regions of G1 and *** analysis showed that the GridSurfaceCreate algorithm presented lower accuracy in estimating *** underestimation trend of this algorithm was also observed in *** gullies showed considerable soil losses,which may reduce the areas suitable for agricultural activities,and silting up of water *** Topogrid algorithm presented satisfactory results,denoting great potential to produce morphometric data of gullies.
