Breeding phase and outcome determine space use in European rollers Coracias garrulus prior to migration

The breeding period is a demanding and time-constrained phase for migratory bird species.Breeding outcome and duration can interact with the extent and duration of post-breeding movements,resulting in individual differences in space use ultimately influencing later stages of the annual cycle.We present space-use and home range estimates during the breeding season for 21 European rollers Coracias garrulus tracked between 2018 and 2022,in Italy and Croatia.Using high-resolution spatial GPS data coupled with regular nest-box monitoring,we analyzed dif-ferences in space use during the incubation/nestling period versus post-breeding period prior to migration,accounting for the breeding outcome(successful vs.failure).We found that adult movements were strongly reduced during the first phase,whereas increased in the post-breeding phase,especially for failed breeders.Successful breeders remained in the surroundings of the nest site,whereas unsuccessful ones tended to abandon the nest and visit distant areas(up to 500 km)for long periods(60.5±6.2 days).Breeding outcome did not influence the departure date of autumn migration,suggesting that failed breeders used this period for exploratory movements but not for advancing the onset of migra-tion.Such exploratory movements may be functional to prospect and inform settlement decisions in failed breeders in search of new breeding opportunities and may be particularly important in migratory species,which generally have a limited period to gather information prior to autumn migration.The study demonstrates the need to investigate seasonal movements in different populations and the potential importance of pros-pectingpost-breeding movements for long-distance migratory species.

Nest box selection and reproduction of European Rollers in Central Italy: a 7-year study

Background: Changes and increased mechanisation of agricultural practices have influenced the biodiversity composition of farmland habitats and caused a decline of bird communities in many European countries. The removal of shrubs and large trees rich in natural cavities, has also led to a drastic decrease in nest site availability for cavity-nesting bird species. Nest-boxes are a common conservation tool used to improve nest-site availability, and have helped to reverse declines in many endangered bird populations. Nonetheless to maximize the results of such interventions it is crucial to know where nest-boxes should be sited. The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the nest-box program for the European Roller (Coracias garrulus) population of Lazio region (Central Italy). More specifically, we focused on what landscape features were preferred (or avoided) in the process of nest box selection and how they influenced population’s breeding parameters. Particular attention was paid to identifying potential limitations and to provide management recommendations for future interventions. Methods: Using data from 70 nest boxes sited on power lines monitored over a 7-year period (representing 140 breeding attempts), we developed probability functions to evaluate if nest box location, in terms of distance from habitat resources and habitat composition and structure, had an effect on nest box occupancy and on the main reproductive parameters. Results: Nest boxes were more likely to be occupied if they were located near arable fields and in areas characterized by a higher amount of incoming solar radiation. Higher fledging success was associated with fallow fields and with a moderate/low habitat structural complexity. Higher breeding success was associated with solar radiation and with greater distance from urban areas. Impact characterization on thin structures using machine learning approaches

Machine learning algorithms are trained and compared to identify and to characterise the impact on typical aerospace panels of different geometry.Experimental activities are conducted to build a proper impacts’dataset.Polynomial regression algorithm and artificial neural network are applied and optimised to panels without stringer to test their capability to identify the impacts.Subsequently,the algorithms are applied to panels reinforced with stringers that represent a significant increase of complexity in terms of dynamic features of the system to test:the focus is not only on the impact position’s detection but also on the event’s severity.After the identification of the best algorithm,the corresponding machine learning model is deployed on an ARM processor minicomputer,implementing an impact detection system,able to be installed on board an aerial vehicle,making it a smart aircraft equipped with an artificial intelligence decision-making system.

Treatment for paraganglioma with stereotactic radiotherapy

BACKGROUND Paragangliomas(PG)are rare neoplasms of neuroendocrine origin that tend to be highly vascularized,slow-growing,and usually sporadic.To date,common treatment options are surgical resection(SR),with or without radiation therapy(RT),and a watch-and-wait approach.AIM To evaluate the local control and effectiveness of exclusive fractionated stereotactic RT(FSRT)treatment in unresectable PG(uPG).METHODS We retrospectively evaluated patients with uPG(medically inoperable or refused SR)treated with FSRT with a Cyberknife System(Accuray Incorporated,Sunnyvale,California).Toxicity and initial efficacy were evaluated.RESULTS From May 2009 to January 2023,6 patients with a median age of 68(range 20-84)were treated with FSRT.The median delivered dose was 21 Gy(range 20-30 Gy)at a median isodose line of 75.5%(range 70%-76%)in 4 fractions(range 3-5 fractions).The median volume was 13.6 mL(range 12.4-65.24 mL).The median cumulative biological effective dose and equivalent dose in 2-Gy fractions were 70 Gy and 37.10 Gy respectively.Site of origin involved were the timpa-nojugular glomus(4/6),temporal bone,and cervical spine.In 1 of the 6 patients,the follow-up was insufficient;5 of 6 patients showed a 5-year overall survival and 5-year progression-free survival of 100%.We observed negligible toxicities during and after RT.The majority of patients showed stable symptoms during follow-up.Only 1 patient developed spine metastases.CONCLUSION Our preliminary results on this small cohort of patients suggest that FSRT could be an effective and safe alternative to SR.

Two is better than one: combinatorial receptor targeting enhances hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) therapeutic response

Finding effective therapies for hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is an ongoing challenge for both researchers and clinicians.Enthusiasm for new treatment options emerging from in vitro,preclinical,and clinical studies is often tempered by limited patient benefits and associated side effects,tolerated in some cases due to the lack of alternatives.The complexity of identifying effective treatment options resides in several features of HCC,notably the extraordinary heterogeneity in molecular alterations among different patients(1-3),the lack of consistent alterations associated with oncogene addictions(4),and a so-called“non-oncogene addiction”by which tumorigenicity results from the action of non-mutated genes(5,6).This complex configuration also prevents identification of unequivocal alterations used to design therapies,as for some other cancer types.Current HCC treatments are based on the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer(BCLC)guidelines according to the stage of lesions among other parameters.For HCC at early stages(30-40%of HCC patients),treatments include lesion resection,liver transplantation,radiofrequency ablation(RFA)and microwave ablation(MWA),achieving a median overall survival(OS)of more than 60 months.For HCC at intermediate stages(~20%of HCC patients),the advised treatment is generally transarterial chemoembolization(TACE),achieving an OS of 20 months.For HCC at advanced stages(~40%of HCC patients),targeted therapies are the most frequent treatments,leading to an OS of 11 months with most targeted monotherapies.For HCC at terminal stages,only palliative care is provided(~10%of HCC patients),with less than 3 months OS(7,8).

Introduction Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)stands as a significant contributor to cancer-related mortality,ranking as the fifth leading cause of cancer-related death(1).In 80%of cases,HCC arises from an underlying liver disease(2).Despite screening programs for at-risk patients,the prognosis for HCC remains even dismal because of late diagnosis.The only curative options currently available are liver resection for selected cases,and liver transplantation.However,the high rate of recurrence after surgery makes the prognosis bleak.In fact,following curative intent resection,the 5-year recurrence is approximately 60%(3),with 5-year survival after recurrence of 35%(4).

Cholangiocarcinoma(CCA)is a rare and very aggressive malignancy arising from the biliary tract.Based on the location of the tumor,CCA can be divided in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma(iCCA),perihilar cholangiocarcinoma(pCCA)and distal cholangiocarcinoma(dCCA).Many other characteristics differentiate these groups,including pathological features,oncological approach and surgical techniques,which in turn influences patient outcomes.

Development of waste-to-energy through integrated sustainable waste management:the case of ABREN WtERT Brazil towards changing status quo in Brazil

In the context of circular economy,it is known that once waste is generated,it should be subject to proper treatment for recovering material or energy before being disposed.Many countries worldwide,especially developing countries such as Brazil,have been struggling to effectively apply sustainable waste management in municipalities and still rely on dumpsites and unsuitable landfills.Misinformation,a weak legal framework,lack of financial resources and poor infra-structure as well as pressure from organizations profiting from the expansion of landfills are some factors contributing to the preservation of the negative status quo:the“landfill culture”.Material recovery,i.e.,recycling and composting,is applied to less than 5%of Brazilian municipal waste,while 95%is disposed of in landfills or dumpsites.In this context,ABREN WtERT(Waste-to-Energy Research and Technology Council)Brazil was created in 2019 as the first permanent organization formed to promote the development of energy and material recovery from waste focused on the waste-to-energy(WTE)market.In this paper,the strategy proposed and implemented by the organization towards changing the status quo in Brazil through an integrated sustainable waste management approach is described.The proposed strategy integrates the concepts of Sustainability and Circular Economy for minimizing landfill disposal(avoiding methane emissions)and maximizing material/energy recovery.Among others,the approach focuses on changing the public opinion regarding thermal treatment facilities,mainly incinerators,which has been wrongly linked to pollution,excessive public expenditures and considered a harm to the recycling industry.The activities performed by ABREN include engaging public and private institutions,enhancing education,leading the publication of research and business studies,gathering industry members and academy experts,as well as creating strategic alliances with players around the globe.As a result,within a few years,major outcomes were achieved in Brazil,such as:(i)chan

A computer vision system for early detection of anthracnose in sugar mango(Mangifera indica)based on UV-A illumination

The present work describes the development of a computer vision system for the early detection of anthracnose in sugar mango based on Ultraviolet A illumination(UV-A).Anthracnose,a disease caused by the fungus Colletotrichum sp,is commonly found in the fruit of sugar mango(Mangifera indica).It manifests as surface defects including black spots and is responsible for reducing the quality of the fruit.Consequently,it decreases its commercial value.In more detail,this study poses a system that begins with image acquisition under white and ultraviolet illumination.Furthermore,it proposes to analyze the Red,Green and Blue color information(R,G,B)of the pixels under two types of illumination,using four different methods:RGB-threshold,RGB-Linear Discriminant Analysis(RGBLDA),UV-LDA,and UV-threshold.This analysis produces an early semantic segmentation of healthy and diseased areas of the mango image.The results showed that the combination of the linear discriminant analysis(LDA)and UV-A light(called UV-LDA method)in sugar mango images allows early detection of anthracnose.Particularly,this method achieves the identification of the disease one day earlier than by an expert with respect to the scale of anthracnose severity implemented in this work.

BACKGROUND Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome(IC/BPS)is an at least 6-mo noninfectious bladder inflammation of unknown origin characterized by chronic suprapubic,abdominal,and/or pelvic pain.Although the term cystitis suggests an inflammatory or infectious origin,no definite cause has been identified.It occurs in both sexes,but women are twice as much affected.AIM To systematically review evidence of psychiatric/psychological changes in persons with IC/BPS.METHODS Hypothesizing that particular psychological characteristics could underpin IC/BPS,we investigated in three databases the presence of psychiatric symptoms and/or disorders and/or psychological characteristics in patients with IC/BPS using the following strategy:("interstitial cystitis"OR"bladder pain syndrome")AND("mood disorder"OR depressive OR antidepressant OR depression OR depressed OR hyperthymic OR mania OR manic OR rapid cyclasterisk OR dysthymiasterisk OR dysphoriasterisk).RESULTS On September 27,2023,the PubMed search produced 223 articles,CINAHL 62,and the combined PsycLIT/PsycARTICLES/PsycINFO/Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection search 36.Search on ClinicalTrials.gov produced 14 studies,of which none had available data.Eligible were peer-reviewed articles reporting psychiatric/psychological symptoms in patients with IC/BPS,i.e.63 articles spanning from 2000 to October 2023.These studies identified depression and anxiety problems in the IC/BPS population,along with sleep problems and the tendency to catastrophizing.CONCLUSION Psychotherapies targeting catastrophizing and life stress emotional awareness and expression reduced perceived pain in women with IC/BPS.Such concepts should be considered when implementing treatments aimed at reducing IC/BPS-related pain.
