Development of waste-to-energy through integrated sustainable waste management:the case of ABREN WtERT Brazil towards changing status quo in Brazil

In the context of circular economy,it is known that once waste is generated,it should be subject to proper treatment for recovering material or energy before being *** countries worldwide,especially developing countries such as Brazil,have been struggling to effectively apply sustainable waste management in municipalities and still rely on dumpsites and unsuitable ***,a weak legal framework,lack of financial resources and poor infra-structure as well as pressure from organizations profiting from the expansion of landfills are some factors contributing to the preservation of the negative status quo:the“landfill culture”.Material recovery,i.e.,recycling and composting,is applied to less than 5%of Brazilian municipal waste,while 95%is disposed of in landfills or *** this context,ABREN WtERT(Waste-to-Energy Research and Technology Council)Brazil was created in 2019 as the first permanent organization formed to promote the development of energy and material recovery from waste focused on the waste-to-energy(WTE)*** this paper,the strategy proposed and implemented by the organization towards changing the status quo in Brazil through an integrated sustainable waste management approach is *** proposed strategy integrates the concepts of Sustainability and Circular Economy for minimizing landfill disposal(avoiding methane emissions)and maximizing material/energy *** others,the approach focuses on changing the public opinion regarding thermal treatment facilities,mainly incinerators,which has been wrongly linked to pollution,excessive public expenditures and considered a harm to the recycling *** activities performed by ABREN include engaging public and private institutions,enhancing education,leading the publication of research and business studies,gathering industry members and academy experts,as well as creating strategic alliances with players around the *** a result,within a few years,major

Clinical events and healthcare resource utilization associated with neutropenia and leukopenia among adult kidney transplant recipients receiving valganciclovir

BACKGROUND Cytomegalovirus(CMV)prophylaxis with valganciclovir and ganciclovir is associated with elevated neutropenia and leukopenia risk in kidney transplant recipients,although the impact of these events on healthcare resource utilization(HCRU)and clinical outcomes is *** To quantify clinical events and HCRU associated with neutropenia and leukope-nia among adults receiving valganciclovir and/or ganciclovir post-kidney *** Adult kidney transplant recipients receiving valganciclovir and/or ganciclovir prophylaxis were identified in the TriNetX database from 2012 to *** characteristics were evaluated in the 1-year period pre-first *** and adjusted event rates per person-year were evaluated in follow-up year 1 and years 2-5 after first kidney transplantation among cohorts with vs without neutropenia and/or *** Of 15398 identified patients,the average age was 52.39 years and 58.70%were *** with neutropenia and/or leukopenia had greater risk of clinical events for CMV-related events,opportunistic infections,use of granulocyte colony stimulating factor,and hospitalizations(relative risk>1 in year 1 and years 2-5).Patients with vs without neutropenia and/or leukopenia had higher HCRU in year 1 and years 2-5 post kidney transplantation,including the mean number of inpatient admissions(year 1:3.47 vs 2.76;years 2-5:2.70 vs 2.29)and outpatient visits(48.97 vs 34.42;31.73 vs 15.59,respectively),as well as the mean number of labs(1654.55 vs 1182.27;622.37 vs 327.89).CONCLUSION Adults receiving valganciclovir and/or ganciclovir prophylaxis post-kidney transplantation had greater risk of neutropenia and/or leukopenia,which were associated with higher clinical event rates and HCRU up to 5 years *** findings suggest the need for alternative prophylaxis options with lower myelosup-pressive effects to improve patient outcomes.

Provisioning of Inter-Domain QoS-Aware Services

Cooperation among service providers, network providers, and access providers in the Internet allows the creation of new services to offer to customers that are in other domains, thus increasing revenue. However, the Internet heterogeneous environment, where each provider has its own policies, infrastructure and business goals, hinders the deployment of more advanced communication services. This paper presents a Quality of Service （QoS） for Inter-Domain Services （QIDS） model that allows inter-domain QoS-aware services to be defined, configured, and adapted in a dynamic and on-demand fashion, among service providers. This is accomplished by： 1） the use of a common communication channel （business layer） where service providers publish and search for services, and interact with each other to contract and manage these services; 2） the templates to specify the business and technical characteristics of the services; 3） the automatic composition of services using service dements （smaller services） a^cording to performance and service-specific QoS parameters; and 4） the creation and enforcement of configuration rules for the underlying infrastructure. A prototype was implemented to validate QIDS and performance tests were conducted on an inter-domain Border Gateway Protocol （BGP）/Multiprotocol Label Switching （MPLS） Virtual Private Network （VPN） scenario.

Punching of reinforced concrete slab without shear reinforcement: Standard models and new proposal

Ultrastructural features of the hypopharyngeal glands in the social wasp Polistes versicolor （Hymenoptera： Vespidae）

The wasps of the genus Polistes have been considered the key to understanding the evolution of social behavior in Hymenoptera. Several studies have shown that the development of organized insect societies was accompanied by the evolution of structures like exocrine glands, which became specialized to perform specific functions. This article investigates the ultrastructural and cytochemical features of the hypopharyngeal glands of Polistes versicolor. These glands have been studied in depth in social bees, where they occur only in nurses and produce the royal jelly. Our results＇ revealed that these glands basically did not vary among individuals or between sexes. They are constituted by spherical cells, each with a large nucleus and well-developed rough endoplasmic reticulum. Secretion vesicles are abundant, but lipid droplets were not observed, indicating that these glands may not have a role in pheromone synthesis. Acid phosphatase was detected in lysosomes, and also flee in the cytosol, but did not seem to be related with cell death. Thus, our results suggest that the hypopharyngeal glands ofP. versicolor may not have a specialized social role, but could produce digestive enzymes.

A brief description of the windmills from the second millennium BC to the Renaissance is presented. This survey is a part of several studies conducted by the authors on technology in the ancient world. The windmills are the first motor, other than human muscles, and are the ancestors of the modem wind turbines. Some authors＇ virtual reconstructions of old windmills are also presented. The paper shows that the operating principle of many modem machines had already been conceived in the ancient times by using a technology that was more advanced than expected, but with two main differences, as follows： Similar tasks were accomplished by using much less energy; and the environmental impact was nil or very low. Modem designers should sometimes consider simplicity rather than the use of a large amount of energy.

Google Earth(GE)has recently become the focus of increasing interest and popularity among available online virtual globes used in scientific research projects,due to the free and easily accessed satellite imagery provided with global ***,the uses of this service raises several research questions on the quality and uncertainty of spatial data(*** accuracy,precision,consistency),with implications for potential uses like data collection and *** paper aims to analyze the horizontal accuracy of very high resolution(VHR)GE images in the city of Rome(Italy)for the years 2007,2011,and *** evaluation was conducted by using both Global Positioning System ground truth data and cadastral photogrammetric vertex as independent check *** validation process includes the comparison of histograms,graph plots,tests of normality,azimuthal direction errors,and the calculation of standard statistical *** results show that GE VHR imageries of Rome have an overall positional accuracy close to 1 m,sufficient for deriving ground truth samples,measurements,and large-scale planimetric maps.
