Improving wood volume predictions in dry tropical forest in the semi-arid Brazil

The volumetric variability of dry tropical forests in Brazil and the scarcity of studies on the subject show the need for the development of techniques that make it possible to obtain adequate and accurate wood volume *** this study,we analyzed a database of thinning trees from a forest management plan in the Contendas de SincoráNational forest,southwestern Bahia State,*** data set included a total of 300 trees with a trunk diameter ranging from 5 to 52 ***,validation and statistical selection of four volumetric models were *** to the difference in height values for the same diameter and the low correlation between both variables,we do not suggest models which only use the diameter at breast height(DBH)variable as a predictor because they accommodate the largest estimation *** comparing the best single entry model(Hohenald-Krenn)with the Spurr model(best fit model),it is noted that the exclusion of height as a predictor causes the values of 136.44 and 0.93 for Akaike information criterion(AIC)and adjusted determination coefficient(R2 adj),which are poorer than the second best model(Schumacher-Hall).Regarding the minimum sample size,errors in estimation(root mean square error(RMSE)and bias)of the best model decrease as the sample size increases,especially when a larger number of trees with DBH≥15.0 cm are randomly *** sampling by diameter class produces smaller volume prediction errors than random sampling,especially when considering all *** summary,the Spurr and Schumacher-Hall models perform *** models suggest that the total variance explained in the estimates is not less than 95%,producing reliable forecasts of the total volume with *** estimates indicate that the bias around the average is not greater than 7%.Our results support the decision to use regression methods to build models and estimate their parameters,seeking stratification strategies in diameter classes for the sample trees.

α,β-amyrin, a natural triterpenoid ameliorates L-arginine-induced acute pancreatitis in rats

AIM: To study the benef icial effects of triterpene α,β-amyrin and the underlying mechanisms in an experimental pancreatitis model. METHODS: Acute pancreatitis was induced in five groups of rats (n = 8) by L-arginine (2 × 2.5 g/kg, intraperitoneal, 1 h apart) and 1 h later, they received a single oral dose of α,β-amyrin (10, 30 and 100 mg/kg),methylprednisolone (30 mg/kg) and vehicle (3% Tween 80). A saline (0.9% NaCl) treated group served as a normal control. Efficacy was assessed at 24 h by determination of serum levels of amylase, lipase and proinflammatory cytokines [tumor necrosis factor (TNf)-α and interleukin (IL)-6], pancreatic myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, lipid peroxidation [thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS)], nitrate/nitrite levels, and the wet weight/body weight ratio. Tissue histology and the immunoreactivity for TNf-α and inducible nitric oxide synthetase (iNOS) were performed. RESULTS: α,β-amyrin and methylprednisolone treatments significantly (P decreased the serum levels of amylase and lipase, and TNf-α and IL-6, as compared to the vehicle control. Also, pancreatic levels of MPO activity, TBARS, and nitrate/nitrite were signifi cantly lower. Histological f indings and TNf-α and iNOS immunostaining further confirmed the amelioration of pancreatic injury by α,β-amyrin. CONCLUSION: α,β-amyrin has the potential to combat acute pancreatitis by acting as an anti-in? ammatory and antioxidant agent.

One Pr（Ⅲ） lanthanide ion complex was initially synthesized and characterized by TGA-DSC in air atmosphere, as well as characterized by CHN elemental analysis, defining the stoichiometric ratio as Pr（DMBz）3. The gaseous products evolved during the thermal decomposition were also monitored in N2 atmosphere employing TGA/fT-IR system. A crystal structure is obtained by state-of-the-art powder X-rays diffraction methods measured in conventional laboratory equipment and refined by the Rietveld method, which defined it as a monoclinic system of the space group P21/C with a polymeric crystal structure, [Pr（DMBZ）3]n. fT-IR theoretical spectrum and time-dependent density functional theory（TD-DfT） were calculated from TGA-DSC and crystalline system data. The experimental and theoretical fT-IR spectra present a high correlation degree when the main stretching bands are compared, while the energy transfer（HOMO - LUMO） in their neighborhoods suggests the main contributions of the light-emitting states.

Thermal and salinity effects on locomotor performance of Thoropa taophora tadpoles(Anura,Cycloramphidae)

It is well known that environmental temperature influences several biological functions of ectotherms,notably in *** high permeability of anuran skin,associated with the effect of elevated environmental temperature,potentiates the dehydration process and this combination may restrict locomotor ***pa taophora is an endemic species from the Atlantic Rainforest whose tadpoles are semiterrestrial and predominantly diurnal,and are found in rocky seashores where they are exposed to sea spray and high *** this study we investigated how temperature and salinity conditions affect the locomotor performance in Thoropa taophora *** also assessed how different osmotic concentrations affect the activity of the metabolic pathways that support muscle *** measured the sprint speed of tadpoles of various sizes at different temperatures and salinities in the *** also measured the activity of the enzymes pyruvate kinase(PK),lactate dehydrogenase(LDH)and citrate synthase(CS)in different temperatures and osmotic concentrations,and calculated the thermal sensitivity and the activity constants for each *** results showed that,in general,sprint speed decreased with increasing temperature and ***,whereas the effect of increased salinity was similar in smaller and larger tadpoles,increased temperature had a higher negative impact on sprint speed of larger tadpoles,thus indicating low thermal sensitivity of small *** and LDH thermal sensitivities and LDH constant of activity decreased as the osmolality *** conclusion,the locomotor capacity of tadpoles was decreased by temperature and salinity,which may be related to a decrease in anaerobic metabolism both in terms of sensitivity and total energy turnover through enzymatic *** discuss the ecological consequences,including the potential impacts on predator escape behavior promoted by changes in metabolism and locomotor performance

Urethane Modified Hydrophobic Compact Wood Pulp Paper for Oil Spill Cleanup: A Preliminary Study

Oil spills and oil/water wastewater are among the great concerns regarding oil *** technologies face many limitations and in some cases are responsible for causing secondary pollution,therefore there is as seek for environmental friendly ***,from which celluloses are highlighted,are being employed for oil/water separation or oil absorbents ***,these membranes are obtained by freeze drying of CNf(cellulose nano-fibrils)suspensions followed by chemical modification for hydrophobization,which involves expensive process as chemical vapor deposition and expensive reactants as sylanes,turning these processes hardly ***,we produced a natural porous structure paper from eucalyptus pulp fibers modified by a dipping and heating process in a blocked diisocyanate *** the surface treatment,contact angle with water reached 144°and water absorption reduced seven times,keeping the good oil *** chemical modification process is simple to be performed and use a very low quantity of reactant estimated to be less than 0.1 wt%based on *** good mechanical properties of the material allows its use in non usual conditions which can be of great importance depending on the environmental conditions.

Hepatic encephalopathy(HE)is a cognitive disturbance characterized by neuropsychiatric *** occurs in acute and chronic hepatic disease and also in patients with portosystemic *** presence of these portosystemic shunts allows the passage of nitrogenous substances from the intestines through systemic veins without liver ***,the embolization of these shunts has been performed tocontrol HE manifestations,but the presence of portal vein thrombosis is considered a *** this presentation we show a cirrhotic patient with severe HE and portal vein thrombosis who was submitted to embolization of a large portosystemic *** report:a 57 years-old cirrhotic patient who had been hospitalized many times for persistent HE and hepatic coma,even without precipitant *** had a wide portosystemic shunt and also portal vein *** abdominal angiography confirmed the splenorenal shunt and showed other *** larger shunt was embolized through placement of microcoils,and the patient had no recurrence of overt *** was a little increase of esophageal and gastric varices,but no endoscopic treatment was *** portosystemic shunts are frequent causes of recurrent HE in cirrhotic patients,portal vein thrombosis should be considered a relative contraindication to perform a shunt ***,in particular cases with many shunts and severe HE,we found that one of these shunts can be safely embolized and this procedure can be sufficient to obtain a good HE *** conclusion,we reported a case of persistent HE due to a wide portosystemic shunt associated with portal vein *** the patient had other shunts,she was successfully treated by embolization of the larger shunt.

Transpiration and growth responses by Eucalyptus species to progressive soil drying

The regulation of plant transpiration is a key factor affecting transpiration efficiency, growth and adaptation of Eucalyptus species to limited water availability in tropical and subtropical environments. However, few studies have related this trait to the performance of Eucalyptus seedlings and none have investigated the influence of vapor pressure deficit (VPD) on transpiration rates and growth. In this study, the transpiration and growth responses of seedlings of Eucalyptus urophylla (S.T. Blake) and Eucalyptus cloeziana (f. Muell.) to progressive soil water deficits were evaluated under semi-controlled conditions using the fraction of transpirable soil water (fTSW) method. In addition, the influence of VPD on seedling transpiration, development and growth was also investigated. The fTSW threshold ranged from 0.40 to 0.99 for the transpiration rate and from 0.32 to 0.97 for the development and growth variables. Little or no changes in the fTSW threshold were detected in response to changes in atmospheric VPD. Both Eucalyptus species presented a conservation strategy under drought stress. In addition, water-conserving mechanisms during the seedling phase were related to rapid stomatal closure, reduced leaf area, and number of leaves.
