Lagos State Hospital Waste Management Practices: A Descriptive Overview with Stakeholders’ Role and Key Recommendations

Background: Waste generation and its disposal is an essential issue in the sustainability of the environment and the planet’s future. Waste management is essential across sectors, likewise the health sector. Therefore, there is a need to employ extra care and attention to handling waste generated from healthcare facilities to avoid the dangers of poor biomedical waste management. We carried out this study to examine the waste management practice in healthcare facilities in Lagos State. Methods: The study was a descriptive survey carried out in one-thousand two hundred and fifty-six (1256) healthcare facilities in Lagos State. Nine hundred sixty-nine (969) of these facilities are located in urban areas, while two hundred and eighty-seven (287) are rural. The facilities studied are government/public health facilities (15.45%), private-for-profit facilities (82.88%), NGOs, Mission/Faith-Based medical facilities (1.67%). The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Specifically, we utilized bar charts, frequency, and percentage. Result: The result shows that 98.4% (1236) of the studied facilities are registered with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), while 1.6% (20) are not registered. 98.5% (191) of the 194 government-owned facilities, 98.5% (1025) of the 1041 private-for-profit facilities, and 98.2% (20) of the 21 NGOs/faith-based health facilities are registered with Lagos State Waste Management Authority. The result also shows that 94% of the healthcare facilities studied in Lagos State use color-coded waste bags to segregate waste at the point of origin. 58.7% of the facilities use red-colored bags, 33.3% use yellow-colored bags, 10.7% use black-colored bags, and 1.3% use brown biohazard bags for segregating Infectious waste. Also, 34.2% of the health facilities in Lagos state use red-colored bags, 36.9% use yellow-colored bags, 11% use black-colored bags, and 4.1% use brown-colored bags to segregate their hazardous waste. β-Islet cell regeneration potential of Mirabilis jalapa in hyperglycemic rats

Objective:To investigate the role of Mirabilis jalapa root extracts in restoration of glucose homeostasis in alloxan-induced hyperglycemic Wistar albino ***:Experimental hyperglycemic rats were treated daily with 200 and 400 mg/kg of Mirabilis jalapa extracts after initial fasting for 6 ***-hour postprandial glucose and changes in body weight were monitored during *** 14 d,the rats were sacrificed and blood was collected for biochemical assessment of serum glucose and insulin levels,lipid profile,and oxidative stress *** examinations of harvested pancreas were also carried ***:Mirabilis jalapa root extracts at 200 and 400 mg/kg increased the body weight of hyperglycemic *** glucose levels of the extract-treated hyperglycemic groups progressively declined during treatment compared with the untreated hyperglycemic control group(P<0.05).The lipid profile indices of the untreated negative control group were significantly elevated(P<0.05),which were reversed by treatment with Mirabilis jalapa *** remarkable increases in antioxidant enzyme activities and a significant decrease in malondialdehyde levels were observed in the hyperglycemic group treated with Mirabilis jalapa *** jalapa extracts also significantly increased serum insulin levels(P<0.05).In addition,histopathological examinations of the pancreas revealed a significant cell population within the islet nests of the extract-treated hyperglycemic ***:Mirabilis jalapa extract can restore glucose homeostasis and show hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects in hyperglycemic *** studies are needed to verify the active components of the plant and the underlying mechanism of action in the future.

Assessment of Vegetation Productivity in the Northern Part of Nigeria

Climate change is one of the greatest threats facing the global community and has been mainly induced by increasing atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases resulting from fossil fuel energy use and change in vegetation cover. This study used modelling techniques to determine how changes in climate could affect vegetation productivity in the northern part of Nigeria. Climatic parameters (Rainfall, Minimum and Maximum Temperatures) as well as coarse Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data for the growing seasons of 1981-2009 were utilised. Because of the relationship between climatic parameters and vegetation, Spatial method of data interpolation was tested. Results from the prediction elevation values ranged from -3e-9 to 2e-9. It was observed from prediction variance map that the values were higher in the upper portion of the study area which comprised Gusau (GS), Jos (JS), Katsina (KT), Minna (MN) and Zaria (ZR) and lower in the middle and lower parts of the study area which comprised mainly Funtua, Kano, Maiduguri and Sokoto. Further studies are encouraged with high resolution imageries and more meteorological data to cover the montane and forest zone of the country to determine the level of climatic impacts particularly on vegetation productivity in general.

Spatio-Temporal Assessment of Vegetation Resource Dynamics in Nigeria from SPOT Satellite Imageries

Vegetation resources in Nigeria are of vital importance for the sustainable development of the country. However, this essential resource is in danger due to the effect of anthropogenic and climate induced impacts. Currently desert encroachment which cuts across the Sahel is affecting most of the states in the northern part of the country particularly the eleven states considered by the Federal Ministry of Environment in Nigeria as the frontline states. Several studies on the Nigerian environment have shown that there are serious threats to the general environment particularly vegetation. Due to population growth and the need for housing as well as the expansion of the over-utilised farmlands across these states, places considered as reserved areas across the country are being exploited to the detriment of the vegetal resources particularly the forest and rangeland areas. This study utilized Idrisi TerrSet (version 18) raster-based remote sensing and GIS software to analyse seventy two (72) dekadal Normalised Vegetation Index (NDVI) imageries from SPOT satellite covering Nigeria in order to assess the anthropogenic and likely climatic impacts on the vegetal resources using the forward t-mode Principal Component Analysis (PCA) with standardised principal components. Results indicated that Component 1 which explains about 69% of the 72 time-series NDVI imageries shows typical vegetation cover over the study area within the time period under study. While component two indicated a cyclic trend differentiating the ENSO events of 1999 and 2009;component three indicated positive anomaly pattern of vegetation NDVI mostly within Sokoto, Kebbi, Kano, Jigawa and the northern parts of Bauchi, Yobe and Borno states. However, Component four imagery indicated a likely link to the 2009 flood that affected Kainji dam and rivers Niger and Benue. Background: Behind every great system is an organized team;this is especially true in the healthcare industry, where a dedicated human resources team can effectively recruit employees, train staff, and implement safety measures in the workplace. The importance of human resources in the healthcare industry cannot be overstated, with benefits ranging from providing an orderly and effectively run facility to equipping staff with the most accurate and up-to-date training. Proper human resources management is critical in providing high-quality health care. A refocus on human resources management in healthcare requires more research to develop new policies. Effective human resources management strategies are greatly needed to achieve better outcomes and access to health care worldwide. Methods: This study leveraged NOI Polls census data on Health Facility Assessment for Lagos State. One thousand two hundred fifty-six health care facilities were assessed in Lagos State;numbers of Health workers were documented alongside their area of specialization. Also, demographic characterizations of the facilities, such as LGA, Ownership type, Facility Level Care, and Category of the facility, were also documented. Descriptive statistics alongside cross tabulation was done to present the various area of specialization of the health workers. Multiple response analysis was done to understand the distribution of human resources across the health facilities. At the same time, Chi-square and correlation tests were conducted to test the independence of various categories recorded while understanding the relationships among selected specialties. Results: The study revealed that Nurses were the most common health specialist in the Lagos State health facilities. At the same time, Gynecologists and General surgeons are the two medical specialists mostly common in health facilities. One-Pot Synthesis of Aldol Adduct Catalyzed by Immobilized Picolylamine on Zirconia

Direct aldol reactions have been successfully performed using aromatic aldehyde and cyclic ketone in nonpolar solvent by using immobilized picolylamine on zirconia as a catalyst, in a double walled batch reactor. The prepared catalyst was characterized by SEM, XRD and FT-IR. FT-IR peaks reveal the presence of picolylamine on the surface of zirconia. The catalyst shows excellent catalytic activity in aldol reaction of cyclohexanone with benzaldehyde in cyclohexane giving 2-hydroxyphenylmethylcyclohexanone (55.7% yield) in 4 hr at 80?C. Furthermore, the catalyst is recoverable by simple filtration and could be used several times without significant loss in activity.

MCNP Simulation of Physics Parameters of Dispersion Fuels for Conversion of NIRR-1 to LEU

The Nigeria Research Reactor-1 (NIRR-1) is one of the Commercial Miniature Neutron Source Reactors (MNSRs) sited outside China and scheduled for conversion under the auspices of Reduced Enrichment for Research and Test Reactors (RERTR) program. Since 2006, the reduction in the fuel enrichment of MSNR facilities from greater than 90% HEU cores to less than 20% LEU cores has been embarked upon. Consequently in this work, the physics parameters of three dispersion LEU fuels, which include U3Si, U3Si2, and U9Mo enriched to 19.75% were determined by the MCNP code to investigate their suitability for the conversion of NIRR-1 to LEU. The following reactor core physics parameters were computed for the LEU fuel options: clean cold core excess reactivity (ρex), control rod (CR) worth, shut down margin (SDM), neutron flux distributions in the irradiation channels and kinetics data (i.e. effective delayed neutron fraction, βeff?and prompt neutron lifetime, lf). Results are compared with experimental and calculated data of the current HEU core and indicate that it would be feasible to use any of the LEU options for the conversion of commercial MNSR in general and NIRR-1 in particular from HEU to LEU.

Efficacy and safety of generic daclatasvir +sofosbuvir ± ribavirin in treatment of genotype 3infected hepatitis C patients - a real life experience from Pakistan

Aim: Genotype 3 is the most prevalent genotype in Pakistan. Despite a revolution in the treatment of Hepatitis C, genotype 3 is still thought to be difficult to treat genotype. The price of patent direct acting antivirals was thought to a great limiting factor especially for low income countries. In Pakistan low cost generics of daclatasvir and sofosbuvir are easily available for treatment. The aim of our study is to provide real life local data to determine their efficacy and safety. Methods: This open-label, non-randomized, uncontrolled study was carried out at Center for Liver and Digestive Diseases, Holyfamily Hospital, Rawalpindi. We enrolled patients from March 2016 through March 2018 who were 18 years or older having chronic hepatitis C infection with detectable polymerase chain reaction (PCR), regardless of whether they were treatment na?ve or have experienced Interferon in the past. The patients were offered generic sofosbuvir 400 mg and daclatasvir 60 mg once daily with or without ribavirin for a period of 12 to 24 weeks. Follow-up PCRs were performed at 4th week of treatment, end of treatment and 12 weeks post treatment. All those patients were included in the study that had at least one follow-up PCR during or after the course of treatment. Results: A total of 102 patients were enrolled in the study with a mean age of 48.11 ± 12.70 including 63% males and 37% females. All patients were genotype 3. On 4th week follow up, 31/36 (86.11%) patients had quantitative PCR negative. Out of 102 patients 78 patients had follow up PCR at the completion of therapy with an end of treatment response of about 96.1%. Thirty patients had a follow up at 12 weeks post treatment with a SVR12 of 83.33% (25/30) amongst which treatment Na?ve had a response rate of 84% (21/25), treatment experience 80%(4/5), non-cirrhotics 85.71% (12/14), cirrhotics 81.25% (13/16) and decompensated chronic liver disease patients have a SVR12 of about 83.33% (10/12) respectively. The Occurence of Gastrointestinal Helminths in Slaughtered Cattle in Azare, North-East Nigeria

A Cross-sectional Study was carried out to determine the prevalence of gastrointestinal(G.I.)helminths parasites in slaughtered cattle at Azare abattoir,Katagum Local Government Area,Bauchi State,North-Eastern *** hundred and twenty faecal samples were examined using the floatation and sedimentation *** of the total samples tested,*** infections were detected in 62 samples tested,giving an overall prevalence of 51.6%.Class nematodes are the most diverse class(56.5%),followed by trematodes(35.5%),while cestodes are the least prevalent(8.1%).There was a statistically significant difference in ***’prevalence among different classes(p0.05).The Red Bororo breeds had the highest prevalence of 75%,while the least was recorded in White Fulani and Sokoto Gudali,40%*** was a statistically significant difference in G.I helminth infection’s prevalence rate to breed(p<0.05).This study revealed that Fasciola spp.(15%)is the most prevalent *** parasites detected,followed by Oesophagostomum spp(11.7%);Haemonchus spp.(9.2%);Strongyloides spp.(8.3%),Schistosoma spp.(3.3%);and Moniezia spp.(1.67%).Our findings from the present study revealed a high prevalence of *** species affecting cattle in Azare,North-East ***,there is a great need for proper advocacy on appropriate management,regular deworming practices,and improved cattle hygiene to boost animal *** will help in curbing significant loss to Nigeria’s economy and the world in general.

Flares of joint inflammation and resistance to currently available biologic therapeutics in rheumatoid arthritis(RA)patients could reflect activation of innate immune ***,we show that a TLR7 GU-rich endogenous ligand,miR-Let7b,potentiates synovitis by amplifying RA monocyte and fibroblast(FLS)***-Let7b ligation to TLR7 in macrophages(MΦs)and FLSs expanded the synovial inflammatory ***,secretion of M1 monokines triggered by miR-Let7b enhanced Th1/Th17 cell *** showed that IRAK4 inhibitor(i)therapy attenuated RA disease activity by blocking TLR7-induced M1 MΦor FLS activation,as well as monokine-modulated Th1/Th17 cell ***4i therapy also disrupted RA osteoclastogenesis,which was amplified by miR-Let7b ligation to joint myeloid ***,the effectiveness of IRAK4i was compared with that of a TNF inhibitor(i)or anti-IL-6R treatment in collagen-induced arthritis(CIA)and miR-Let7b-mediated *** found that TNF or IL-6R blocking therapies mitigated CIA by reducing the infiltration of joint F480+iNOS+MΦs,the expression of certain monokines,and Th1 cell ***,these biologic therapies were unable to alleviate miR-Let7b-induced *** superior efficacy of IRAK4i over anti-TNF or anti-IL-6R therapy in miR-Let7b-induced arthritis or CIA was due to the ability of IRAK4i therapy to restrain the migration of joint F480+iNOS+MΦs,vimentin+fibroblasts,and CD3+T cells,in addition to negating the expression of a wide range of monokines,including IL-12,MIP2,and IRF5 and Th1/Th17 *** conclusion,IRAK4i therapy may provide a promising strategy for RA therapy by disconnecting critical links between inflammatory joint cells.
