Vertical stratification of ichneumonid wasp communities： the effects of forest structure and life-history traits

Parasitoid wasp communities of the canopy of temperate forests are still largely unexplored. Very little is known about the community composition ofparasitoids between canopy and understory and how much of this difference is related to forest structure or parasitoid biological strategies. In this study we investigated upon the difference in the community composition of the parasitic wasps Ichneumonidae between canopy and understory in a lowland temperate forest in northern Italy. We used general linear models to test whether parasitic strategy modifies species vertical stratification and the effect of forest structure. We also tested differences in β-diversity between canopy and understory traps and over time within single forest layers. We found that stand basal area was positively related to species richness, suggesting that the presence of mature trees can influence local wasp diversity, providing a higher number of microhabitats and hosts. The ichneumonid community of the canopy was different from that of the understory, and theβ-diversity analysis showed higher values for the canopy, due to a higher degree of species turnover between traps. In our analyses, the vertical stratification was different between groups of ichneumonids sharing different parasitic strategies. Idiobiont parasitoids of weakly or deeply concealed hosts were more diverse in the understory than in the canopy while parasitoids of spiders were equally distributed between the two layers. Even though the ichneumonid community was not particularly species-rich in the canopy of the temperate forests, the extension of sampling to that habitat significantly increased the number of species recorded.

Beeswax is the substance that forms the structure of a honeycomb; the bees secrete wax to build the honeycombs where to store *** to its rich hydrophobic protective properties,the beeswax is in fact present within cosmetics and body ***,beeswax is used in the food industry:as a film to wrap cheese for maturing or as a food additive(E901) to give shine to the *** as the honey which it contains,beeswax is also characterized by several therapeutic properties of great interest to us; it is thought to be particularly effective in healing bruises,inflammation and ***,the interest of researchers has moved even on antimicrobial properties of beeswax although there are still few studies in the literature focused only on the action of *** few studies showed an anitimicrobic effectiveness of beeswax against overall Staphylococcus aureus,Salmonella enterica,Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger; these inhibitory effects are enhanced synergistically with other natural products such as honey or olive *** minireview aims to be a collection of major scientific works that have considered the antimicrobial activity of beeswax alone or in combination with other natural products in recent years.

Porous asphalts have supplementary surface and volumetric properties(e.g., acoustic absorption, drain ability, texture, and friction). These properties are linked to intrinsic factors(e.g., gradation and bitumen content) and extrinsic factors(e.g., traffic load), while their evolution over time depends on complex phenomena and processes that cause their deterioration and therefore affect safety, noise, and budget. Despite the decay of so many and complex properties over time, there is a lack of criteria to synergistically optimize the pavement system. Consequently, the objective of this study is to set up and validate a design method that synergistically addresses the most relevant properties of friction courses as a part of a pavement structure. The abovementioned method is based on indepth analyses of the literature and on laboratory and on-site tests carried for several years in order to evaluate the decay over time of the main surface and volumetric *** show that (1) the level of fulfilment of single requirements varies over time and among the characteristics;(2) a sound optimization of the design of the mix in order to balance the different characteristics is needed;(3) further studies are needed because of uncertainty in predicting the main surface properties.

Uncertainties of landslide susceptibility prediction considering different landslide types

Most literature related to landslide susceptibility prediction only considers a single type of landslide,such as colluvial landslide,rock fall or debris flow,rather than different landslide types,which greatly affects susceptibility prediction *** construct efficient susceptibility prediction considering different landslide types,Huichang County in China is taken as ***,105 rock falls,350 colluvial landslides and 11 related environmental factors are *** four machine learning models,namely logistic regression,multi-layer perception,support vector machine and C5.0 decision tree are applied for susceptibility modeling of rock fall and colluvial ***,three different landslide susceptibility prediction(LSP)models considering landslide types based on C5.0 decision tree with excellent performance are constructed to generate final landslide susceptibility:(i)united method,which combines all landslide types directly;(ii)probability statistical method,which couples analyses of susceptibility indices under different landslide types based on probability formula;and(iii)maximum comparison method,which selects the maximum susceptibility index through comparing the predicted susceptibility indices under different types of ***,uncertainties of landslide susceptibility are assessed by prediction accuracy,mean value and standard *** is concluded that LSP results of the three coupled models considering landslide types basically conform to the spatial occurrence patterns of landslides in Huichang *** united method has the best susceptibility prediction performance,followed by the probability method and maximum susceptibility *** cases are needed to verify this result *** considering different landslide types is superior to that taking only a single type of landslide into account.

The effectiveness of using acupuncture for dry eye disease(DED)is ***,this systematic review investigated the effectiveness and feasibility of using acupuncture for DED in accordance with the 2020 PRISMA *** outcomes of interests were(1)to evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture in improving the ocular surface disease index(OSDI),Schirmer I test score,and tear breakup time from baseline to the last follow-up;(2)to determine possible complications of using acupuncture;and(3)to investigate the superiority of acupuncture over other commonly used treatments for *** from 394 patients were *** showed that acupuncture significantly prolonged the tear breakup time(P<0.0001),significantly increased the Schirmer I test score(P<0.0001),and significantly reduced the OSDI(P<0.0001)from baseline to the last *** with the control group,the acupuncture group had significantly greater Schirmer I test score(P<0.0001),significantly longer tear breakup time(P=0.0004),and significantly lower OSDI(P=0.002).These results suggest that acupuncture is effective and feasible in improving symptoms and signs of *** severe adverse effects of acupuncture were observed.

The accuracy of landslide susceptibility prediction(LSP)mainly depends on the precision of the landslide spatial ***,the spatial position error of landslide survey is inevitable,resulting in considerable uncertainties in LSP *** overcome this drawback,this study explores the influence of positional errors of landslide spatial position on LSP uncertainties,and then innovatively proposes a semi-supervised machine learning model to reduce the landslide spatial position *** paper collected 16 environmental factors and 337 landslides with accurate spatial positions taking Shangyou County of China as an *** 30e110 m error-based multilayer perceptron(MLP)and random forest(RF)models for LSP are established by randomly offsetting the original landslide by 30,50,70,90 and 110 *** LSP uncertainties are analyzed by the LSP accuracy and distribution ***,a semi-supervised model is proposed to relieve the LSP *** show that:(1)The LSP accuracies of error-based RF/MLP models decrease with the increase of landslide position errors,and are lower than those of original data-based models;(2)70 m error-based models can still reflect the overall distribution characteristics of landslide susceptibility indices,thus original landslides with certain position errors are acceptable for LSP;(3)Semi-supervised machine learning model can efficiently reduce the landslide position errors and thus improve the LSP accuracies.

Forest health is currently assessed in Europe （ICP Forests monitoring program）. Crown defoliation and dieback, tree mortality, and pathogenic damage are the main aspects considered in tree health assessment. The worsening of environmental conditions （i.e., increase of temperature and drought events） may cause large-spatial scale tree mortality and forest decline. However, the role of stand features, including tree species assemblage and diversity as factors that modify environmental impacts, is poorly considered. The present contribution reanalyses the historical dataset of crown conditions in Italian forests from ] 997 to 2014 to identify ecological and structural factors that influence tree crown defoliation, highlighting in a special manner the role of tree diversity. The effects of tree diversity were explored using the entire data set through multivariate cluster analyses and on individual trees, analysing the influence of the neighbouring tree diversity and identity at the local （neighbour） level. Preliminary results suggest that each tree species shows a specific behaviour in relation to crown defoliation, and the distribution of crown defoliation across Italian forests reflects the distribution of the main forest types and their ecological equilibrium with the environment. The potentiality and the problems connected to the possible extension of this analysis at a more general level （European and North American） were discussed.
