Comparative analysis of experimental testing procedures for the elicitation of rescue actions in ants

Rescue behavior is observed when 1 individual provides help to another individual in danger.Most reports of rescue behavior concern ants(Formicidae),in which workers rescue each other from various types of entrapment.Many of these entrapment situations can be simulated in the laboratory using an entrapment bioassay,in which ants confront a single endangered nest mate entrapped on a sandy arena by means of an artificial snare.Here,we compared numerous characteristics of rescue actions(contact between individuals,digging around the entrapped individual,pulling at its body parts,transport of the sand covering it,and biting the snare entrapping it)in Formica cinerea ants.We performed entrapment tests in the field and in the laboratory,with the latter under varying conditions in terms of the number of ants potentially engaged in rescue actions and the arena substrate(marked or unmarked by ants'pheromones).Rescue actions were more probable and pronounced in the field than in the laboratory,regardless of the type of test.Moreover,different test types in the laboratory yielded inconsistent results and showed noteworthy variability depending on the tested characteristic of rescue.Our results illustrate the specifics of ant rescue actions elicited in the natural setting,which is especially important considering the scarcity of field data.Furthermore,our results underline the challenges related to the comparison of results from different types of entrapment tests reported in the available literature.Additionally,our study shows how animal behavior differs in differing experimental setups used to answer the same questions.

Intestinal health is critically important for the digestion and absorption of nutrients and thus is a key factor in determining performance.Intestinal health issues are very common in high performing poultry lines due to the high feed intake,which puts pressure on the physiology of the digestive system.Excess nutrients which are not digested and absorbed in the small intestine may trigger dysbiosis,i.e.a shift in the microbiota composition in the intestinal tract.Dysbiosis as well as other stressors elicit an inflammatory response and loss of integrity of the tight junctions between the epithelial cells,leading to gut leakage.In this paper,key factors determining intestinal health and the most important nutritional tools which are available to support intestinal health are reviewed.

As we cycle between the states of wakefulness and sleep,a bilateral cholinergic nucleus in the pontine brain stem,the laterodorsal tegmentum(LDT),plays a critical role in controlling salience processing,attention,behavioral arousal,and electrophysiological signatures of the sub-and microstates of sleep.Disorders involving abnormal alterations in behavioral and motivated states,such as drug dependence,likely involve dysfunctions in LDT signaling.In addition,as the LDT exhibits connectivity with the thalamus and mesocortical circuits,as well as receives direct,excitatory input from the prefrontal cortex,a role for the LDT in cognitive symptoms characterizing attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder(ADHD)including impulsivity,inflexibility,and dysfunctions of attention is suggested.Prenatal nicotine exposure(PNE)is associated with a higher risk for later life development of drug dependence and ADHD,suggesting alteration in development of brain regions involved in these behaviors.PNE has been shown to alter glutamate and cholinergic signaling within the LDT.As glutamate and acetylcholine are major excitatory mediators,these alterations would likely alter excitatory output to target regions in limbic motivational circuits and to thalamic and cortical networks mediating executive control.Further,PNE alters neuronal development and transmission within prefrontal cortex and limbic areas that send input to the LDT,which would compound effects of differential processing within the PNE LDT.When taken together,alterations in signaling in the LDT are likely to play a role in negative behavioral outcomes seen in PNE individuals,including a heightened risk of drug dependence and ADHD behaviors.

Purpose:We aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the effects of training to muscle failure or non-failure on muscular strength and hypertrophy.Methods:Meta-analyses of effect sizes(ESs)explored the effects of training to failure vs.non-failure on strength and hypertrophy.Subgroup meta-analyses explored potential moderating effects of variables such as training status(trained vs.untrained),training volume(volume equated vs.volume non-equated),body region(upper vs.lower),exercise selection(multi-vs.single-joint exercises(only for strength)),and study design(independent vs.dependent groups).Results:Fifteen studies were included in the review.All studies included young adults as participants.Meta-analysis indicated no significant difference between the training conditions for muscular strength(ES=-0.09,95%confidence interval(95%CI):-0.22 to 0.05)and for hypertrophy(ES=0.22,95%CI:-0.11 to 0.55).Subgroup analyses that stratified the studies according to body region,exercise selection,or study design showed no significant differences between training conditions.In studies that did not equate training volume between the groups,the analysis showed significant favoring of non-failure training on strength gains(ES=-0.32,95%CI:-0.57 to-0.07).In the subgroup analysis for resistance-trained individuals,the analysis showed a significant effect of training to failure for muscle hypertrophy(ES=0.15,95%CI:0.03-0.26).Conclusion:Training to muscle failure does not seem to be required for gains in strength and muscle size.However,training in this manner does not seem to have detrimental effects on these adaptations,either.More studies should be conducted among older adults and highly trained individuals to improve the generalizability of these findings.

In the paper we discuss and compare two commonly used methods of finding the shortest paths in networks,namely Dijkstra’s and A*algorithms.We compare their effectiveness in terms of traversing road network in circumstances that require swift decision making in the event of dynamically changing road conditions on the basis of studies conducted for evacuation plans.To build a proper model of such a network,a method of appropriate edge-weighting is introduced,based on empirical data collected by other researchers.Then,we use the basics of the theory of quasimetric spaces to introduce a heuristic to such graphs,which is easy to calculate metric.The heuristic we obtain is both admissible and consistent,which allows us to use it efficiently in A*search algorithms.The developed application can be used in studies into evacuation from hazardous areas.In this case,optimum calculative efficiency is achievable with a simultaneous reduction of calculation time(when compared to Dijkstra’s algorithm).Our application can be applied during the first stage,i.e.,prior to the occurrence of a disaster,since this is an appropriate time for preparation by planning,drilling,early warning,and designating the rescue services that are to participate in the following stages.

Present work focuses on analysis of the stress and strain fields inside and around the individual {10–12} twin in magnesium alloy. The 3D crystal plasticity model represents twin as an ellipsoidal inclusion surrounded by the matrix. Five different twin thicknesses and three different lateral twin lengths are used for stress/strain analysis. The simulations are complemented with experimental observations using high-resolution electron backscattered diffraction. The simulations and experiments show a similar distribution of the shear stress and the spatial activity of individual slip systems(basal, prismatic, pyramidal). Plasticity induced inside the twin is dominantly caused by the prismatic dislocations slip and does not influence twin back stress which is identical to pure elastic twin. The twin with larger lateral dimension requires lower equilibrium stress which suggests anisotropic twin propagation and increased thickness of such twins. The lateral twin propagation is mostly influenced by prismatic and pyramidal slip in the twin vicinity. The twin thickness can reach a maximal level that is driven by the critical resolved shear stress values for dislocation slip with the significant influence of basal slip.

Membrane microdomains or lipid rafts are known to be highly dynamic and to act as selective signal transduction mediators that facilitate interactions between the cell's external and internal environments.Lipid rafts play an important mediating role in the biology of cancer:they have been found in almost all existing experimental cancer models,including colorectal cancer (CRC),and play key regulatory roles in cell migration,metastasis,cell survival and tumor progression.This paper explores the current state of knowledge in this field by highlighting some of the pioneering and recent lipid raft studies performed on different CRC cell lines and human tissue samples.From this literature review,it becomes clear that membrane microdomains appear to be implicated in all key intracellular signaling pathways for lipid metabolism,drug resistance,cell adhesion,cell death,cell proliferation and many other processes in CRC.All signal transduction pathways seem to originate directly from those peculiar lipid islands,thereby orchestrating the colon cancer cells' state and fate.As confirmed by recent animal and preclinical studies in different CRC models,continuing to unravel the structure and function of lipid rafts-including their associated complex signaling pathways-will likely bring us one step closer to better monitoring and treating of colon cancer patients.

Eye tracking can facilitate understanding irrational decision-making in contexts such as financial risk-taking.For this purpose,we develop an experimental framework in which participants trade a risky asset in a simulated bubble market to maximize individual returns while their eye movements are recorded.Returns are sensitive to eye movement dynamics,depending on the presented visual stimuli.Using eye-tracking data,we investigated the effects of arousal,attention,and disengagement on individual payoffs using linear and nonlinear approaches.By estimating a nonlinear model using attention as a threshold variable,our results suggest that arousal positively influences trading returns,but its effect becomes smaller when attention exceeds a certain threshold,whereas disengagement has a higher negative impact on reduced attention levels and becomes almost irrelevant when attention increases.Hence,we provide a neurobehavioral metric as a function of attention that predicts financial gains in boomand-bust scenarios.This study serves as a proof-of-concept for developing future psychometric measures to enhance decision-making.

BACKGROUND The prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD)is increasing worldwide,and at the same time it is associated with increased mortality and reduced quality of life.Efforts to build sustainable rehabilitation approaches to COPD treatment and prevention are crucial.The system of long-term pulmonary rehabilitation care is insufficient.The main reasons for the absence of these outpatient programs are the lack of experience,the lack of interest of insurance companies in secondary prevention programs,and the lack of healthcare facilities in large geographical areas.The possibility of at-home pulmonary rehabilitation models(telemonitoring and telecoaching)could solve this problem.CASE SUMMARY A 71-year-old man with severe COPD,Global Initiative for Obstructive Lung Diseases stage 3 underwent an 8-wk remotely monitored inspiratory muscle training with a device based on the test of incremental respiratory endurance method.Spirometry,body plethysmography,test of incremental respiratory endurance examination,6-min walking test,body mass index,airflow obstruction,dyspnea,exercise capacity index,and subjective perception of dyspnea were performed as part of the initial and final examination.The patient performed training at home,and the physiotherapist monitored the patient remotely through a web application that allowed the physiotherapist to evaluate all training parameters in real-time and respond to any problems.After 8 wk of home training,there was a significant increase in all monitored values:maximal inspiratory pressure,a novel parameter sustained maximal inspiratory pressure,forced expiratory volume in 1 s,total lung capacity,forced vital capacity,peak expiratory flow,and inspiratory capacity.There was also an improvement in the perception of dyspnea according to the COPD Assessment Test and a modified Medical Research Council Breathlessness Scale,an increase in exercise tolerance according to the 6-min walking test,and a decrease in the exercise capacity index as a predictor of prognosis.CONCL
