Mathematical modeling of malaria transmission dynamics in humans with mobility and control states

Malaria importation is one of the hypothetical drivers of malaria transmission dynamics across the *** studies on malaria importation focused on the effect of the use of conventional malaria control strategies as approved by the World Health Organization(WHO)on malaria transmission dynamics but did not capture the effect of the use of traditional malaria control strategies by vigilant *** order to handle the aforementioned situation,a novel system of Ordinary Differential Equations(ODEs)was developed comprising the human and the malaria vector *** of the system was carried out to assess its quantitative *** novel computational algorithm used to solve the developed system of ODEs was implemented and benchmarked with the existing Runge-Kutta numerical solution ***,simulations of different vigilant conditions useful to control malaria were carried *** novel system of malaria models was well-posed and epidemiologically meaningful based on its quantitative *** novel algorithm performed relatively better in terms of model simulation accuracy than *** the best model-fit condition of 98%vigilance to the use of conventional and traditional malaria control strategies,this study revealed that malaria importation has a persistent impact on malaria transmission *** lieu of this,this study opined that total vigilance to the use of the WHO-approved and traditional malaria management tools would be the most effective control strategy against malaria importation.

Background:The greater cane rat(GCR),reputed to be African's second largest rodent,is a precocial hystricomorph with an uncommon phenotype and life *** and socio-economic interests in the GCR have led to heightened research efforts targeted towards a better understanding of its biology and exploration of its economic and translational ***:Records of all online scientific publications on the GCR from Google,Google Scholar,PubMed,***,Ebscohost and Worldwide science,with the exception of research theses,proceedings,unpublished projects and abstracts,were collated and analyzed using descriptive ***:A total of 146 published scholarly articles spanning about six decades were retrieved,with 98%of the GCR publications originating from African *** boasts the highest number of publications(58.22%)followed by Ghana(21.23%)and South Africa(5.48%)while Senegal contributed the least(0.69%).Publications were sorted into ten field *** field with the highest number of articles(41.78%)was animal breeding and management recording,closely followed by anatomy(37.67%).Lesser contributions were made by parasitology(5.48%),biochemistry/hematology(4.8%),pharmacology/toxicology(4.11%),pathology(2.06%),and surgery/anesthesia and physiology(1.37%apiece).The fields with fewest contributions were microbiology and developmental biology(0.69%each).Conclusion:This study chronicles the spectrum of knowledge available on the GCR,highlighting the knowledge gap that still exists in various fields in order to provide advocacy for new frontiers in research efforts on this *** suggest the need for a clearly defined and well integrated national/regional policy aimed at establishing Africa's foremost micro-livestock rodent,the greater cane rat,on the world's scientific radar.

Effect of Water Deficit Imposed during the Early Developmental Phase on Photosynthesis of Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.)

A greenhouse study was carried out at Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria, Ibadan to study the effect of water stress on the four popular cocoa genotypes at the institute. F3 Amazon, T1, T7 and Amelonado were raised under different water regimes (daily, 3-day interval, 5-day interval and 7-day interval) at 100%, 50% and 25% field capacities. Data were collected on the height, leaf area, root length, stomata conductance, photosynthetic rate and water use efficiency of the plants. Results showed that plant performances showed genotypic variation in their response to water stress. Generally, there were linear and positive relationships between water level and values in both physiological and morphological responses of cocoa genotypes.

Extraction of Chemical Constituents of Bitumen Using a Mixed Solvent System

Several solvents had been used to extract the SARA (Saturate, Aromatic, Resin and Asphaltene) constituents of bitumen. The quantification of such extracts also abounds in open literature but in this work an attempt was made to determine the quality of extraction as a feed stock for processing bitumen using a mixed solvent system. A mixture of heptane and toluene was used to compare with the standard method using heptane. The components were analysed for functional groups of compound types presented in them using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometry technique (FTIR). The quality of bitumen component extract was not significantly affected by the method of extraction as recommended by the ASTM. The components are mixture of different class of hydrocarbons such as saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons which conformed to what had earlier been reported by other researchers.

Tear and serum electrolyte concentrations as a biomarker in primary glaucoma subjects

Glaucoma progresses with stealth and late presentation is not *** study explored the relationship between tear and serum ions concentration and *** concentration of sodium,potassium and chloride in tear and serum of 50 glaucoma patients and 50 age and sex-matched controls were *** and control groups had a mean age of 55.98±11.91 and 52.24±13.17 years *** difference in their age was not statistically *** sodium,potassium and chloride concentrations(mmol/L)in tear of test subjects were 133.74±4.30,17.13±1.74 and 125.54±5.56 respectively while for control subjects,the values were 131.06±6.39,21.40±1.57 and 122.86±7.12 respectively.A paired comparison of mean between the 2 groups was statistically significant for potassium and sodium.A higher chloride ion concentration in test subjects was not statistically *** mean concentrations of sodium,potassium and chloride ions in the serum test subjects were 135.42±3.84,4.07±0.66 and 101.00±2.82 respectively while the mean concentrations in control subjects were 135.56±3.84,4.14±0.69 and 101.58±3.25 *** comparison of means was not statistically *** did not significantly influence any of the measured variables but increasing age was related to decreasing potassium ion concentration in tear of glaucoma subjects in a statistically significant *** a tear potassium concentration of 20 mmol/L as the lower limit of normal,the calculated sensitivity and specificity for making a diagnosis of glaucoma was 94%and 88%*** potassium ion concentration in tear of glaucoma subjects could be a useful biomarker in the disease but further research is *** effective glaucoma screening test can hold at-risk individuals from a greater distance of irreversible glaucoma blindness.

Nutritional Quality of Tomato (<i>Lycopersicon lycopersicum</i>L.) Varieties as Influenced by Combined Application of Human Urine and Rock Phosphate

There has been increasing interest in the quality of food produced in the sub-Saharan Africa and organic fertilizers can be used as palliative for eradicating malnutrition and improving the livelihood of the populace. A study was conducted in two phases, 4 × 5 × 2 and 2 × 4 factorial experiments in a completely randomized design with three replicates at the Department of Agronomy screenhouse, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. In the first experiment, five N levels (0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 kgN/ha) were combined with two P levels (0 and 20 kgP/ha) using urea and single superphosphate, respectively and four varieties (Roma VF, UC82B, Rio grande and Roma savana) of tomatoes were used. In the second experiment, optimum rates (60 kgN and 20 kgP/ha) from the first experiment formed the basis for the application of urea + SSP, urine + ORP, urea + SSP + urine + ORP and control. The best-performing varieties (Rio grande and Roma savana) in the first experiment were used. Data were subjected to analysis of variance. Combined application of N and P had higher N use efficiency and nutrient uptake than sole application of N or P. Urine + ORP based fertilizer mixtures were best for nutrient uptake and crop utilization of N and P. Increasing N levels led to decrease in nutrient use efficiency. Application of urine + ORP and urea + SSP gave better fruit qualities. The descending order of varietal superiority with respect to nutrient uptake, utilization and quality was: Rio grande > Roma savana > Roma VF > UC82B. Thus, urine + ORP based fertilizer mixtures have great potentials as substitutes for urea + SSP in the production of tomatoes.

Chronic Empyema: Aetiopathology and Management Challenges in the Developing World

Objectives: Chronic empyema thoracis (CET) is common worldwide despite widespread use of highly effective antibiotics. Also, newer technological armamentaria are available for its diagnosis and treatment. This research was performed to study the aetiopathological profile and the management challenges of CET in view of the background information stated above. Methods: It is a prospective study spanning a period of 62 months in Lagos, Nigeria. Patients’ bio-data, aetiological factors, salient clinical features, management modalities and complications of care were documented and analysed. We excluded patients who were not fit for surgery and those who could not afford surgery. Patients that were initially registered as chronic empyema patients but who later became positive for malignancy were also excluded. Results: There were 93 patients (61 males and 31 females). Age range was 4-72 years but the range 20-49 years constituted 71.0% of the studied population. Poorly treated acute chest infections was the aetiological factor in 49.5% of patients. Tuberculosis was established in 37 patients (39.8%) who were especially in social classes I and II. Decortication and pneumonectomy were done for 52.7% and 16.1% of the patients respectively. Average hospitalisation was prolonged for pneumonectomy because some patients had pneumonectomy space infections. Discusion: CET remains a worldwide problem despite widespread use of potent antibiotics. There are newer diagnostic and therapeutic armamentaria that are not readily available in developing world thereby posing major challenges to practicing surgeons.

Antidiabetic potential of methanol extracts from leaves of Piper umbellatum L. and Persea americana Mill.

Objective: To determine inhibitory activity of methanolic leaf extract of Piper umbellatum and Persea americana(P. americana)(traditionally used in Cameroon against diabetes) on β-glucosidase, β-glucosidase, maltase-glucoamylase, aldose reductase and aldehyde reductase activities, enzymes involved in starch digestion or diabetic complications. Methods: The methanol extracts from Piper umbellatum and P. americana were prepared by maceration. To assess relative efficacy of these extracts, the determination of concentrations that were needed to inhibit 50% of enzyme activity was done, whereas, gas chromatography-mass spectrum was used to identify components from extracts that may be responsible for the activities. Results:The tested extracts strongly inhibited β-glucosidase, maltase-glucoamylase, aldose reductase and aldehyde reductase activities with IC50 ranging from(1.07 ± 0.03) to(31.77 ± 1.17) μg/*** the tested extracts, P. americana was the most active against sensitive enzymes(IC50 of1.07 ± 0.03 to 15.63 ± 1.23). But, none of the extracts showed interesting inhibitory effect against β-glucosidase as their percentage inhibitions were less than 16%. From gas chromatographymass spectrum analysis, 10 and 8 compounds were identified in Piper umbellatum and *** extracts respectively, using NIST library 2014. Conclusions: Results of this study provide the scientific credential for a prospective usage of these plants to treat diabetes.

The Use of Greenhouse Gases as Climate Proxy Data in Interpreting Climatic Variability

Greenhouse gas data were utilized as proxy data in interpreting climate variability. These greenhouse gases were related to temperature records using standard deviation (SD) as the transfer function based on observed correlations between them and global warming records. The annual SD used as warming index for the concentrations of these greenhouse gases for the period 1996 to 2005 at the various stations considered showed good correlation with 1998 as the warmest for these stations.

Non-template [2 + 2] condensation of benzene-1,4-dicarboxaldehyde with two diamines: ethane-1,2-diamine and propane-1,2-diamine was carried out to give Ligands 1 and 2. Additionally, template [1 + 2] condensation of benzene-1,4-dicarboxaldehyde with ethane-1,2-diamine and propane-1,2-diamine were also carried out to give Ligands 3 and 4. These were characterized using 1H and 13C NMR, UV-Vis and infra-red spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Coordination compounds of each ligand were further synthesized using Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions. They were characterized by Uv-vis, infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, magnetic susceptibility and energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy EDX. The ligands and complexes were further analyzed for their antimicrobial activities and extraction efficiency. The results obtained suggested that tetraaza macrocyclic and linear compounds were
