The field experiment was conducted in the Department of Botany, University of Ibadan, Nigeria between September to December 2012. Four accessions of pepper (Capsicum spp.), obtained from Moor plantation in Ibadan and LUTH (Lagos University Teaching Hospital) vegetable garden, Idi-Araba Lagos were evaluated to investigate the morpho-agronomic variability and interaction of accession × treatment × days after transplant in treatment combinations of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (Glomus clarum) and cowdung. The experiment was a 4 × 4 factorial arrangement laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The combined analysis of variance showed significant accession, treatment, days after transplant, and accession × treatment interactive effect for most of the growth characters at P 0.01 and P 0.05. The result also showed significant difference in yield related traits of fruits for pepper accessions. The number of leaves per plant was significant and positively associated with plant height (r = 0.516;P 0.05), and highly significant and positively correlated with the number of branches (r = 0.836;P 0.01), but negative and non-significantly related with stem girth. Glomus clarum treated plants responded significantly with higher growth and yield. It suggested that G. clarum treatment had higher potential in influencing crop yield compared to cowdung and untreated plants. This study further explored the relationship between G.

Prevalence and Factors Associated with Hypertension among People Living with HIV Receiving Care in Three Large HIV Clinics in Nasarawa State, Nigeria

In the last decade, the long-term survival among people living with HIV (PLHIV) has significantly improved. This is accompanied by an increased burden of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension due to the combined effect of the aging population and the metabolic effect of the Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV) virion and antiretroviral therapy. This study aims to assess the prevalence and factors associated with hypertension among people living with HIV in three large health facilities in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional study employed a multistage sampling technique to select 309 adults with HIV, 18 years and above, receiving HIV care in three large health facilities in Nasarawa State. The outcome variable was the participants’ self-reported history of hypertension, confirmed through a positive history of hypertension treatment. Exposure variables included the participant’s socio-demographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, and HIV care and treatment history. Data were presented using frequency tables. Factors associated with hypertension were assessed using binary logistic regression at a 0.05 level of statistical significance. A total of 309 adults living with HIV were sampled. A larger percentage of the participants were married 228 (73.8%), female, 191 (61.8%), within the age group 41 - 50 years, 141 (45.6%). Most of the participants had no family history of hypertension, 188 (60.8%). The prevalence of self-reported hypertension was 11.0% (34/309). Factors associated with hypertension at the bivariate level were age group 21 - 30 years, 41 - 50 years, being widow/widower, divorced, retired from employment or with family history of hypertension. Only participants age group 31 - 40 years [Adjusted Odd Ratio (AOR): 0.18, 95%CI: 0.04 - 0.91, p = 0.04] and family history of hypertension [(AOR): 83.44, 95%CI: 15.75 - 442.11, p < 0.01] were found to predict hypertension among the study participants after adjusting for confounders. Lead, Zinc and Iron Pollutants Load Assessment in Selected Rivers in Southern Nigeria: Implications for Domestic Uses

The aim of the study is to comparatively assess the concentrations of lead, zinc and iron in Rivers Ase, Warri and Ethiope, in Nigeria. Monthly water samples were collected from six randomly selected sites along the rivers course. 72 water samples were collected from each river at 0 - 15 cm depths. Samples were analysed based on the standard methods recommended by the WHO for testing lead, zinc and iron. The assessment of the water quality was done using the Water Quality Index (WQI) of the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME-WQI). While hypotheses were tested using ANOVA. Findings indicated that CCME-WQI values were 47.3, 66.52 and 78.7. This meant that the water quality of River Ase is impaired and departed from desirable levels, while that of Warri and Ethiope were considered to occasionally be impaired and depart from desirable levels. The ANOVA model showed that there is a significant variation in heavy metal load in the selected rivers at P < 0.05. River water was put to domestic uses such as drinking (20.5%) preparing food (17.8%), bathing (19.8%), washing clothes and dishes (21.3%), brushing teeth (13.3%), and catering for domestic animals (7.5%). Poverty (49.5%) was the major reason for the use of river water for domestic purposes. The locals highlighted that they usually suffer from cholera (26.8%), diarrhoea (25.8%), dysentery (24%) and typhoid (23.5%) as a result of using the river water. The study recommended routine monitoring of anthropogenic and geologic activities, testing of the water regularly amongst others.

Nigerian antimalarial plants and their anticancer potential:A review

Cancer is a leading cause of death globally, while malaria is the leading cause of death from parasitic diseases in Nigeria. Historically, plant remedies have been used to manage both cancer and ***, the possibility of treating cancer with antimalarial remedies has long been reported, even though the two diseases appear to have little in common. However, a body of research has indicated the potential anticancer activity of both synthetic and nature-derived antimalarials. In Nigeria, over 100 plants are used for the management of malaria, but little is known for their potential role in combatting cancer. Therefore, this review is to highlight the documented anticancer activities of plants used to treat malaria in Nigeria, with the goal of supporting anticancer drug discovery. Scientific databases were used to search for antimalarial plants using selected keywords. Of over 100 plants used to treat malaria in Nigeria, 56 have documented anticancer properties, containing alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, terpenes,terpenoids, quinones, anthraquinones, saponins, steroids, sterols, organosulfur compounds and other polyphenols as the major bioactive components. The major mechanisms of anticancer activity include induction of apoptosis and autophagy, arrest of cell growth, generation of reactive oxygen species and inhibition of angiogenesis. However, mechanistic and clinical investigations of the anticancer properties of most of these plants are still lacking. Notwithstanding, the huge anticancer potential uncovered by the in vitro or in vivo studies and a few clinical studies, Nigerian antimalarial plants may provide a valuable resource, ready to be harnessed for anticancer drug development.

Stability Assessment of Some West African Okra （Abelmoschus caillel~ Genotypes in Nigerian Genebank

Stability among 50 accessions of West African okra （Abelmoschus caillei） was assessed under three diverse ecological environments at Abeokuta, Ibadan and Mokwa in Nigeria during 2005 and 2006 cropping season. The accessions were grown in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications; data were collected on 5-10 randomly selected plants from each plot. Only 20 accessions were subjected to stability analysis on the basis of yield across the three environments. The joint regression analysis, deviation means square were computed using Eberhart and Russell method and complemented with Francis and Kannenberg method. The regression coefficients of accessions mean yields on the environmental index resulted in regression coefficients ranging in values from 0.5549 to 1.6667. OAA/96/175-5328, NGAE-96-011 and NGAE-96-0060 were among the superior genotypes with high yield performance. The large variation in regression values indicated large differences in genotype response to different environments. It suggests that stability concept of Ebelhart and Russell could be modified to use any yield components that has strong correlation with yield for stability analysis. The two promising accessions ofA. caillei （NGAE-96-011 and NGAE-96-0060） needed to be further tested on farmers＇ field to obtain on-farm data, alter which it should be recommended for official registration and released by the National Committee on Naming, Registration and Release of Crop varieties in Nigeria.

In wearable electronics,significant research has gone into imparting stretchability and flexibility to otherwise rigid electronic components while maintaining their electrical *** far,this has been achieved through various geometric modifications of the rigid conductive components themselves,such as with microcracked,buckled,or planar meander ***,strategic placement of these resulting components within the overall devices,such as embedding them at the neutral plane,has been found to further enhance mechanical stability under ***,these strategies are still limited in performance,failing to achieve fully strain-insensitive electrical performance under biaxial stretching,twisting,and mixed strain ***,we developed a new platform for wearable,motion artifact-free sensors using a graphene-based multiaxially stretchable kirigami-patterned mesh *** normalized resistance change of the electrodes and graphene embedded in the structure is smaller than 0.5%and 0.23%under 180°torsion and 100%biaxial strain,***,the resistance change is limited to 5%under repeated stretching-releasing cycles from 0%to 100%biaxial *** addition,we investigated the deformation mechanisms of the structure with finite element *** on the simulation results,we derived a dimensionless geometric parameter that enables prediction of stretchability of the structure with high ***,as a proof-of-concept,we demonstrated a biaxially-stretchable graphene-based sensor array capable of monitoring of temperature and glucose level with minimized motion-artifacts.

Proximate Composition Determination and Sensory Evaluation of ＂Donkwa＂ Produced from a Blend of Tigernuts and Groundnut

The effect of preparing ＂donkwa＂ from a blend of tigernut and groundnut at different proportion （90：10, 80：20, 70：30 and 50：50 （tigernut：groundnut）） was evaluated on the proximate composition and sensory qualities. This was compared with a sample of ＂donkwa＂ prepared by the popular method from a blend of maize and groundnut. The results revealed the protein content range of 21.84%-23.67% with tigernut based ＂donkwa＂, while the protein content of maize based ＂donkwa＂ was 21.60% at 50：50 （maize：groundnut） ratio. The highest value was also recorded for fiber content with maize based ＂donkwa＂（50：50） which was 3.63% with no significant difference from the value obtained from tigernut based ＂donkwa＂ at 90：10 （tigernut：groundnut） ratio which was 3.25%. The sensory qualities revealed that the tigernut based ＂donkwa＂ compared favourably with the maize based ＂donkwa＂ with indication that there was no significant difference in terms of colour among the samples. There was significant difference among the samples in terms of taste, texture, flavour and general acceptability with the maize based ＂donkwa＂ most preffered in terms texture and general acceptability. In conclusion, the results obtained show the possibility of preparing ＂donkwa＂ from tigernut to give a nutritious and highly acceptable product.

Evaluation of methyl ester sulphonate spacer fluid additive for efficient wellbore clean-up

Oil-based drilling fluid(OBDF)is used to drill through high permeable pay zone to prevent possible damage to the ***,the oil based drilling fluid leaves behind filter cake residue and oilwet surfaces which hinder cement *** fluid is usually introduced to clean up the wellbore prior to cementing *** work presents a spacer fluid designed with environment-friendly anionic methyl ester sulphonate(MES)surfactant and evaluated through a series of experimental tests to ascertain its effectiveness to clean *** of methyl ester sulphonate to confected waterbased drilling fluid at high amount(0.15 g and 0.20 g)showed good rheological properties,compatibility with OBDF and cement and low contact angle on steel and sandstone in the range of 21.9°-34.7°.Furthermore,results show that it requires less amount of MES spacer fluid to revert oil-wet OBDF aqueous phase to water external continuous phase,validating the low contact angle *** efficiencies for two best performing MES spacer fluids achieved 83.27%and 94.3%*** bond strength were measured to be 1.3 MPa and 1.05 MPa for steel and sandstone respectively,above the minimum allowable shear bond strength for oil well ***,MES spacer fluid can be used to clean up wellbores in high permeable formations and in well completion,where strong cement bonding is required.
