近年来,钢管混凝土节点在桥梁工程中的应用越来越广泛。因此需要对这些节点在疲劳荷载作用下的可靠性进行研究,以避免可能突然发生的灾难。对由具有方形中空截面(SHS)的弦杆和支撑构成的中空截面T形节点进行了分析。具有中空截面的弦杆中填充了混凝土,因此形成了焊接组合管状T形节点。对此类节点进行的静力加载试验,校验了应变状态,以确定容易产生裂纹的热点区的应力集中系数。同时也对平面内弯曲循环荷载作用下的支撑的焊接组合节点进行了疲劳试验,以得到应力范围-循环次数(S-N)关系曲线的数据。在焊接的组合管状T形节点的热点区得到的应力集中系数最大值远远小于无任何填充的中空截面T形节点中的应力集中系数最大值。无论是弦杆还是支撑,其中的焊接组合管状T形节点中的疲劳破坏,都是在构件的焊趾处形成初始裂纹以及裂纹的发展过程中产生的。大量的试验也表明,破坏往往是先在弦杆的焊趾处产生第一道裂纹。研究同时发现,填充的焊接组合管状T形节点也比无填充的中空T形节点具有更好的抗疲劳强度。通过运用热点区应力方法进行的疲劳分析,提出了应用于填充混凝土弦杆的中空T形节点的设计方法。

Background The debate over the overall benefits of self-monitoring of blood glucose in type 2 diabetes patients is still *** aimed to assess the difference in glycaemic control and coronary heart disease （CHD） risk levels of experimental type 2 diabetes patients provided with facilities for self-monitoring blood glucose and their counterparts without such *** Sixty-one patients who had no prior experience in using glucometers were studied as intervention （n=30） and control （n=31） *** intervention group was trained in self-monitoring of blood glucose and *** blood glucose and fasting blood glucose were measured and the intervention patients were provided with glucometers and advised to self-monitor their fasting and postprandial blood glucose over six *** 10-year CHD risk levels were determined with the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study-derived risk engine *** The age and diabetes duration were similar in the two groups （P 〉0.05）.The majority of the patients were unemployed or retired females with only a primary level *** 3 months,the haemogolbin A1c （HbA1c） levels of the control patients remained unchanged （（7.8±0.3）% vs.（7.9±0.4）%,P 〉0.05） whereas the HbA1c levels of the intervention patients were significantly reduced from the baseline at three （（9.6±0.3）% vs.（7.8±0.3）%,P 〈0.001） and six （（9.2±0.4）% vs.（7.5±0.3）%,P 〈0.001） ***,while the 10-year CHD risk level of the control group remained unchanged after three months,that of the intervention group was remarkably reduced at three and six months from the baseline level （（7.4±1.3）% vs.（4.5±0.9）%,P=0.056）.Conclusion Self-monitoring of blood glucose in type 2 diabetes patients significantly improved glycaemic control and the CHD risk profile,suggesting that type 2 diabetes patients will potentially benefit from inclusion of glucose meters and testing strips in their health-care package.

The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of okra pectin from two genotypes (asha and agbagoma) on the physicochemical, sensory and microbial quality of yoghurt. Okra pectin concentrations (w/w pectin to milk powder ratios) of 0.2%, 0.4% and 0.6% were used in the yoghurt preparation and its water holding capacity, titratable acidity and pH were analyzed against a control (0.0% pectin) weekly for a month. Consumer acceptability tests for the yoghurt samples were carried out using 50 untrained panellists on a 7-point hedonic scale. Total aerobic microorganisms present in the most preferred samples were enumerated over a four-week period. Results indicated that samples containing 0.2% asha pectin were most preferred by panelists. Water holding capacity varied significantly with those containing asha pectin higher than agbagoma counterparts and the control. There was a decline in pH with increasing pectin concentration and over the storage period

Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) is one of the major pests currently affecting world fruit production. In Argentina’s northern Citrus-producing regions, C. capitata is actively multiplying in large exotic host fruits, such as Citrus paradisi Macfadyen (grapefruit), Citrus aurantium L. (sour orange) and Citrus sinensis L. (Osbeck) (sweet orange). Faced with this situation, the use of parasitoids as biocontrol agents is currently receiving renewed attention as a new biological tool for controlling pestiferous fruit flies within the Argentinean National Fruit Fly Control and Eradication Program (ProCEM). Consequently, a viable approach to controlling C. capitata involves the use of exotic parasitoids such as Diachasmimorpha tryoni (Cameron). In this study, the effectiveness of D. tryoni females to find and successfully parasitize C. capitata larvae infesting all Citrus species mentioned earlier was assessed. Parasitoids were allowed to forage for 8 h on grapefruits and oranges artificially infested with laboratory-reared C. capitata larvae under natural environmental conditions (field cage). Parasitoid emergence, parasitism, overall effectiveness, and sex ratio of parasitoid offspring were estimated as response variables. The higher effectiveness of D. tryoni females recorded from C. sinensis would be mainly a result of both increased host density per unit of fruit surface area and fruit physical features. The study provides evidence that D. tryoni contributed to C. capitata mortality in all Citrus species assessed. However, the mortality values recorded from C. sinensis, C. aurantium, and C. paradisi did not exceed 10%, 1.5%, and 1.7%, respectively. Nonetheless, D. tryoni might be selected to forage under both high and low host density conditions.

The use of Urban Solid Waste (USW) as sources of energy has acquired rising importance in current discussions of alternative energy supplies, in particular in Brazil. This paper brings to these discussions an examination of the concept of solid wastes, including their historic origins and formation, taking their social, economic and cultural characteristics into account, including point view of waste production liturgy. Consequently, a spendthrift society slanted towards the decreasing marginal utility of assets must make efficient use of its USW in order to reduce excessive output. Besides that, this document presents the Brazilian potential of urban solid waste to produce electric power.

Objective: To evaluate the antibacterial activity and neuroprotective capacity of the ethanolic and aqueous extracts of Tarenaya spinosa(T. spinosa) as well as to determine and quantify some of its polyphenols by high performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection(HPLC-DAD). Methods: The bacterial Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains, grown in Heart Agar Infusion, were tested. The drugs gentamicin, norfloxacin and imipenem were used to evaluate the modulating or antagonistic capacity of the T. spinosa extracts. The extract was analysed by HPLC-DAD to determine the main phenolic compounds. For the cell viability tests, individual heads of the Nauphoeta cinerea arthropod model were removed, homogenized in Trifluoromethyl ketone and centrifuged afterwards. Subsequently, 20 μL of NaN O2 were added to the biological material, except in the control group, to evaluate the protection capacity of the extracts. The homogenate of the insect heads was incubated for 2 h in tubes containing tetrazolium bromide. Results: HPLC-DAD demonstrated that the ethanolic extract of T. spinosa presented caffeic acid as the major compound. The ethanolic extract also showed neuroprotective effects at concentrations ≥ 10 μg/mL, while aqueous extract was shown to have a protective effect only at the concentration of 100 μg/mL. The aqueous extract demonstrated a clinically relevant antibacterial activity against the Staphylococcus aureus multidrug resistant strain-MDR, with MIC 512 μg/m L. However, when the extracts were associated with gentamicin and imipenem, a synergism was detected against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli MDR strains. Conclusions: Although it does not present an antibacterial action, the extracts of T. spinosa can be used in the pharmaceutical industries since its extracts show modulating action of drugs. Besides, these natural products have neuroprotective capacity.

Assessment of Knowledge and Practices of Community Health Nurses on Data Quality in the Ho Municipality of Ghana

Background: High data quality provides correct and up-to-date information which is critical to ensure, not only for the maintenance of health care at an optimal level, but also for the provision of high-quality clinical care, continuing health care, clinical and health service research, and planning and management of health systems. For the attainment of achievable improvements in the health sector, good data is core. Aim/Objective: To assess the level of knowledge and practices of Community Health Nurses on data quality in the Ho municipality, Ghana. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was employed for the study, using a standard Likert scale questionnaire. A census was used to collect 77 Community Health Nurses’ information. The statistical software, Epi-Data 3.1 was used to enter the data and exported to STATA 12.0 for the analyses. Chi-square and logistic analyses were performed to establish associations between categorical variables and a p-value of less than 0.05 at 95% significance interval was considered statistically significant. Results: Out of the 77 Community Health Nurses studied, 49 (63.64%) had good knowledge on data accuracy, 51 (66.23%) out of the 77 Community Health Nurses studied had poor knowledge on data completeness, and 64 (83.12%) had poor knowledge on data timeliness out of the 77 studied. Also, 16 (20.78%) and 33 (42.86%) of the 77 Community Health Nurses responded there was no designated staff for data quality review and no feedback from the health directorate respectively. Out of the 16 health facilities studied for data quality practices, half (8, 50.00%) had missing values on copies of their previous months’ report forms. More so, 10 (62.50%) had no reminders (monthly data submission itineraries) at the facility level. Conclusion: Overall, the general level of knowledge of Community Health Nurses on data quality was poor and their practices for improving data quality at the facility level were woefully inadequate. The study evaluates the factors confronting the present-day construction practices in South-East Nigeria. Being a survey research, questionnaires containing information relating to factors/challenges affecting construction practices were randomly administered to selected construction practitioners in South-Eastern States of Nigeria. Accordingly, a total of 240 questionnaires were administered to the selected respondents while 160 copies were completed, returned and found useful. Thus, giving a response rate of 66.67%. Data collected were analysed and presented using percentages, mean scores, principal and factor analysis, z-test and tables. The study found that the core factors that constrain present-day construction in the study area are issues related to inadequate/dearth of technical and managerial expertise, corruption and poor project planning and control;which significantly affect operational effectiveness of the construction industry in the study area. Therefore, the study concluded by recommending that thorough capacity building through training or retraining programme which should centre on areas of the issues identified should be religiously pursued in the study area.
