Gastrointestinal tuberculosis:An autopsy-based study

Background:Tuberculosis is a disease of great relevance since it is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide.Gastrointestinal tuberculosis is an unusual presentation.It is defined as the involvement of any segment of the digestive tract,associated viscera,and peritoneum.The study’s main objective is to collect information from autopsies of patients diagnosed with gastrointestinal tuberculosis in a Pathology reference center in Colombia.Methods:This is a retrospective and descriptive study of autopsy reports.A total of 4,500 autopsies were performed between January 2004 and December 2020.The inclusion criteria were authorization of a family member following local law regulations and a final autopsy diagnosis of gastrointestinal tuberculosis using microscopic visualization.Results:Forty-eight patients with gastrointestinal tuberculosis autopsies were included in our study.Most of the patients were male(n=35,72.9%)with a median age of 40.5 years old.Human immunodeficiency virus infection history was reported in 28 cases(58.33%).The most affected gastrointestinal tract site was the terminal ileum.Ulcers and thickened epithelium were common autopsies macroscopic findings.Tuberculosis multiorgan compromise was a relevant finding in patients with gastrointestinal tuberculosis.Conclusions:Gastrointestinal tuberculosis is a disease of great importance,being its diagnosis a clinical challenge.Underdiagnosis can be reported in a high percentage of cases,so autopsy diagnosis can help reveal more accurate data about this condition.

Ethnoedaphology as an Integrating Process between Academy and Peasant Knowledge in the Productive System of Coffee (Coffea arabica L.) of Southwestern Colombia

Community knowledge about agricultural land and its management constitutes a complex system of wisdom, with universal principles and categories similar or complementary to those used by modern soil science. However, soil management is only recognized from the point of view of agronomy and academia, covering problems in rural areas at the time of adopting agricultural alternatives. For this reason, peasant knowledge was characterized and related to scientific knowledge, in the valuation of land properties in the coffee (Coffea arabica L.) production system. The study was carried out in four villages in the municipality of Buesaco (Nari?o, Colombia), with humid pre-mountain forest conditions, an average temperature of 18?C, annual rainfall of 1400 mm, and an altitude of 1959 m. The study was carried out in the municipality of Buesaco (Nari?o, Colombia). Through field visits, priority was given to farms with coffee production systems under different types of shade. A semi-structured survey was applied to learn about the social, environmental, productive, ancestral, and cultural components, with the application of participatory methodologies allowed to learn about traditional management and practices in the soil component. The results allowed us to identify four types of production systems from coffee without shade to coffee in association with different multipurpose woody perennials and mosses. Diverse dynamics of crop and land management are presented. Several references were found to differentiate land types such as color, texture, production and fertility, being characteristics that are associated to classify soil quality and make management decisions and type of fertilization. Through the perception of the farmers, six land classes with different characteristics were identified, relating the characterization with what was obtained in the chemical analysis of lands. Majorana Neutrino Oscillations in Vacuum

In the context of a type I seesaw scenario which leads to get light left-handed and heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos, we obtain expressions for the transition probability densities between two flavor neutrinos in the cases of left-handed and right-handed neutrinos. We obtain these expressions in the context of an approach developed in the canonical formalism of Quantum Field Theory for neutrinos which are considered as superpositions of mass-eigenstate plane waves with specific momenta. The expressions obtained for the left-handed neutrino case after the ultra-relativistic limit is taking lead to the standard probability densities which describe light neutrino oscillations. For the right-handed neutrino case, the expressions describing heavy neutrino oscillations in the non-relativistic limit are different respect to the ones of the standard neutrino oscillations. However, the right-handed neutrino oscillations are phenomenologically restricted as is shown when the propagation of heavy neutrinos is considered as superpositions of mass-eigenstate wave packets.

The petrology of coal,as determined by the microscopic analysis of organic and inorganic elemental constituents of coal,provides information on its nature and characteristics.Coal is used worldwide in the production of thermal energy and coke.In the case of high-quality Colombian coals,only limited studies have been carried out.The present study presents the geochemical,mineralogical,and petrological characteristics of coal samples collected from Puerto Drummond in Cienaga,Colombia,to predict their potential uses.Therefore,the ultimate,proximate,petrographic,gross calorific value(GCV),ash fusion temperature,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),X-ray diffraction(XRD),X-ray fluorescence(XRF),and Thermogravimetric(TG)analyses were employed in this study.The petrological analysis reveals that Colombian coals are naturally more abundant in vitrinite(72%)than inertinite(14e23%)macerals.Silicates and aluminosilicate are the main minerals present as fine particles mixed with macerals.The XRD and FTIR analyses show that the most common and dominant minerals are quartz,while gypsum,hematite,calcite and mica occur in lesser amounts.The oxide composition of the coal ashes consists of 51e58%SiO2 and 18e25%Al2O3 as determined by XRF analysis.In correlation and regression analysis,the moisture content shows a reverse correlation with GCV(Regression value of R2¼0.68).This study helps researchers to comprehend the importance of Colombian coals and presents various techniques for characterisation of coals.

A Post-Mastectomy Radiation Therapy Dose Distribution Study

Purpose: For post-mastectomy radiation therapy, skin dose must be accurately estimated to assess skin reactions, such as: erythema, desquamation, and necrosis. Even with advanced algorithms, planning systems do not always provide accurate dosimetry for target volumes distal to skin. Methods and Materials: In this study, a female anthropomorphic (ART) phantom and the newest generation of optically stimulated luminescence dosimeters (OSLD) (nanoDots, Landauer Inc.) were deployed to measure chest wall dose distribution. Since actual dose to patients’ lung and heart cannot be measured using in-vivo dosimetry, film was also used to verify the dose distribution to the left lung and heart. The treatment planning was performed using tolerance limits of 95% to 107% of prescription dose. The ART phantom was irradiated according to 3 three-dimensional (3D) conformal radiotherapy plans for 200 cGy dose per fraction using 6 MV medial and lateral tangential photon beams. The dose distribution provided by treatment planning was studied using nanoDots and film. Results: Results show that the largest surface dose difference between nanoDots measurement and prescribed dose for medial and lateral tangential beams, are 3.8% and 9.8%, respectively. This difference may be due to higher effective point of measurement and angular dependence of the nanoDots. The maximum differences in measured dose compared with prescribed dose, using film for heart and the left lung, were 6.2% and 7.5% respectively. Conclusions: Both nanoDots and film provided reasonable estimation of dose distribution in post-mastectomy radiation therapy.

Development of a Module for Measuring Electrical Variables in Power Transformers Based in IoT,to Manage and Monitoring by Telemetry Mechanism

This work shows the development of a module that performs measurements of electrical variables in a low voltage power transformer.These variables are sent by means of the IEEE802.11 standard,connecting to a database stored in the cloud;associating with the meter IoT concepts,this to allow a client to perform an analysis,monitoring and management of their electrical network.For the construction of this module,non-invasive current sensors connected to a three-phase meter are used and a communication card is used that allows data to be extracted from the meter and sent to the cloud database.This module,to convert a conventional electrical power transformer into a smart electrical power transformer,making it a Smart Object and thus extract information from it telemetrically in real time.
