Molecular Determinants of Antibiotic Resistance in the Costa Rican Pseudomonas aeruginosa AG1 by a Multi-omics Approach:A Review of 10 Years of Study

Pseudomonas aeruginosa AG1(PaeAG1)is a Costa Rican strain that was isolated in 2010 in a major *** strain has resistance to multiple antibiotics such asβ-lactams(including carbapenems),aminoglycosides,and ***1 is considered critical(Priority 1)due to its resistance to carbapenems,and it was the first report of a *** isolate carrying both VIM-2 and IMP-18 genes encoding for metallo-β-lactamases(MBL)enzymes(both with carbapenemase activity).Owing to these traits,we have studied this model for 10 years using diverse approaches including *** this review,we summarize the main points of the different steps that we have studied in PaeAG1:preliminary analyses of this strain at the genomic and phenomic levels revealed that this microorganism has particular features of antibiotic *** the multi-omics approach,the genome assembly was the initial step to identify the genomic determinants of this strain,includ-ing virulence factors,antibiotic resistance genes,as well as a complex accessory ***,a comparative genomic approach was implemented to define and update the phylogenetic relationship among complete *** genomes,the genomic island content in other strains,and the architecture of the two MBL-carrying ***,the proteomic profile of PaeAG1 was studied after exposure to antibiotics using 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis(2D-GE).Fourth,to study the central response to multiple perturbations in ***,i.e.,the core perturbome,a machine learning approach was *** analysis revealed biological functions and determinants that are shared by different ***,to evaluate the effects of ciprofloxacin(CIP)on PaeAG1,a growth curve comparison,differential expression analysis(RNA-Seq),and network analysis were *** the results of the core perturbome(pathways that also were found in this perturbation with CIP),it was possible to identify the“exclusive”response and determina

Use of agents stimulating erythropoiesis in digestive diseases

Anemia is the most common complication of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Control and inadequate treatment leads to a worse quality of life and increased morbidity and hospitalization. Blood loss, and to a lesser extent, malabsorption of iron are the main causes of iron def iciency in IBD. There is also a variable component of anemia related to chronic inflammation. The anemia of chronic renal failure has been treated for many years with recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO), which significantly improves quality of life and survival. Subsequently, rHuEPO has been used progressively in other conditions that occur with anemia of chronic processes such as cancer, rheumatoid arthritis or IBD, and anemia associated with the treatment of hepatitis C virus. Erythropoietic agents complete the range of available therapeutic options for treatment of anemia associated with IBD, which begins by treating the basis of the inflammatory disease, along with intravenous iron therapy as f irst choice. In cases of resistance to treatment with iron, combined therapy with erythropoietic agents aims to achieve near-normal levels of hemoglobin/hematocrit (11-12 g/dL). New formulations of intravenous iron (iron carboxymaltose) and the new generation of erythropoietic agents (darbepoetin and continuous erythropoietin receptor activator) will allow better dosing with the same eff icacy and safety.

Cloud forest ecosystems of the Latin American tropics are highly threatened by changes in land-use such as expanding croplands and livestock pastures that promote shifts in the structure and composition of plant communities in these ***,shade coffee plantations represent a forest management alternative that has been shown to maintain biodiversity in these *** this study,we evaluated changes in the composition,diversity,and structure of Mexican cloud-forest woody species for three land use categories:cattle pastures,shade coffee plantations and advanced succession *** each category,fifteen 0.28-ha plots were established and the composition and diversity of vegetation was *** of species was analyzed using ordination methods,and alpha diversity was compared using Hill ***-seven woody species belonging to 40 families were *** richness and diversity was high in both the advanced successional forest and coffee plantations compared to cattle *** composition and structure was similar between late succession forests and coffee plantations with both land uses also being more structurally complex than cattle *** results show how shade coffee cultivation is a land-use activity that maintains woody plant communities in a manner that aligns with biodiversity conservation.

This research aimed to evaluate the efficiency of eucalyptus(E)and bamboo(B)residual biomass biochars as filter materials for drinking water *** efficiencies of these two biochars in the rapid filtration process were evaluated using water(raw,flocculated and settled)at the rate of 120 m^(3)/m^(2)/*** that bamboo biochar manufactured under a slow pyrolysis process"b"(Bb)had the best ***,Bb was evaluated with three different granulometries,and it was found that the effective size with the best performance was the finest(0.6-1.18 mm).Subsequently,this biochar was compared with conventional filter materials such as gravel,sand and anthracite,using different types of water(raw,flocculated and settled)and at different filtration rates(120 and 240 m^(3)/m^(2)/d),and it was found that the filter material with the best performance was precisely biochar,with average removal efficiencies of 64.37%turbidity and 45.08%colour for raw water;93.9%turbidity and 90.75%colour for flocculated water,and 80.79%turbidity and 69.03%colour for settled *** efficiency using simple beds of sand,biochar,anthracite and gravel at the rate of 180 m^(3)/m^(2)/d was 75.9%copper,90.72%aluminium,95.7%iron,10.9%nitrates,94.3%total coliforms and 88.9%fecal *** efficiencies achieved by biochar were higher compared to those of conventional filter *** was also found that biochar contributes to improving the performance of sand and anthracite in mixed ***,it was possible to demonstrate that the volume of washing water required for the biochar is lower compared to the other filter ***,it is recommended to carry out more tests for the purification of water with biochars from rural areas affected by the mining and oil exploitation,as well as the purification of seawater with biochars from coastal areas with residues from dry forests and organic residues from municipalities.

Performance of Phragmites Australis and Cyperus Papyrus in the treatment of municipal wastewater by vertical flow subsurface constructed wetlands

The use of constructed wetlands to treat municipal wastewater reduces energy consumption and therefore economic costs,as well as reduces environmental *** purpose of this study was to compare the purification capacity of domestic wastewater using two species of plants sown in subsurface constructed wetlands with vertical flow built on a small scale that received municipal wastewater with primary *** species used were Phragmites Australis and Cyperus *** this purpose,a constant flow of 0.6 m3 day-1 was fed from the primary lagoon to each of the two wetlands built on a pilot scale with continuous *** unit was filled with granite gravel in the lower part and with silicic sand in the upper part of different granulometry,the porosity of the medium was 0.34,with a retention time of 1.12 days and a hydraulic load rate of 0.2 m *** analyze the purification capacity of wastewater,physical,chemical and biological parameters were monitored during three *** were taken at the entrance and exit in each experimental *** results obtained in the experimental tests for the two species of plants,indicated that the Cyperus Papyrus presented a greater capacity of pollutants removal as biochemical oxygen demand (80.69%),chemical oxygen demand (69.87%),ammoniacal nitrogen (69.69%),total phosphorus (50%),total coliforms (98.08%) and fecal coliforms (95.61%).In the case of Phragmites Australis retains more *** species with greater efficiency in the treatment of municipal wastewater for this study was Cyperus Papyrus.

Aims Mechanisms of plant drought resistance include both tolerance and *** vulnerability to embolism and turgor loss point are considered traits that confer tolerance,while leaf abscission and deciduousness characterizes the avoidance *** these mechanisms are thought to trade-off expressing a continuum among species,little is known on how variation in the timing and duration of leaf shedding in response to drought affect the relationship between xylem and leaf *** the present study,we explored the extent to which drought tolerance differs between two oak(Quercus)species that exhibit different leaf shedding ***,we predicted that *** Trel.,which loses leaves at the end of the dry season(late-deciduous)and is thus exposed to a greater risk of cavitation,would be more drought tolerant and more conservative in its water use than *** Liebm.,which loses its leaves for only a short period of time in the middle of the dry season(brevideciduous).Methods The study was conducted in central Mexico in a single population of each of the two oak species,separated from each other by a distance of 1.58 km,and by an altitudinal difference of 191 *** deserticola(late deciduous)is more frequent down slope,while ***(brevideciduous)tends to occur at higher elevations along the *** assessed seasonal differences(rainy versus dry season)in native stem hydraulic conductivity,and tested for variation in xylem vulnerability to cavitation,leaf water use and leaf turgor loss point between the two *** Findings The two oak species did not differ in traits conferring drought tolerance,including xylem vulnerability to embolism,leaf turgor loss point,or stomatal ***,both species had different performance during the dry season;the brevideciduous species had lower negative impact in the xylem function than the late-deciduous ***,seasonal changes in plant physiological performance

The <I>G</I>-functions Series Method Adapted to the Numerical Integration of Parabolic PDE

The Method Of Lines (MOL) and Scheifele’s G-functions in the design of algorithms adapted for the numeric integration of parabolic Partial Differential Equations (PDE) in one space dimension are applied. The semi-discrete system of ordinary differential equations in the time direction, obtained by applying the MOL to PDE, is solved with the use of a method of Adapted Series, based on Scheifele’s G-functions. This method integrates exactly unperturbed linear systems of ordinary differential equations, with only one G-function. An implementation of this algorithm is used to approximate the solution of two test problems proposed by various authors. The results obtained by the Dufort-Frankel, Crank-Nicholson and the methods of Adapted Series versus the analytical solution, show the results of mistakes made.

Statistical Tests of the Validation of TCO Satellite Measurements, Recorded Simultaneously by TOMS-OMI (2005) and OMI-OMPS (2012-2018)

Two statistical validation methods were used to evaluate the confidence level of the Total Column Ozone (TCO) measurements recorded by satellite systems measuring simultaneously, one using the normal distribution and another using the Mann-Whitney test. First, the reliability of the TCO measurements was studied hemispherically. While similar coincidences and levels of significance > 0.05 were found with the two statistical tests, an enormous variability in the levels of significance throughout the year was also exposed. Then, using the same statistical comparison methods, a latitudinal study was carried out in order to elucidate the geographical distribution that gave rise to this variability. Our study reveals that between the TOMS and OMI measurements in 2005 there was only a coincidence in 50% of the latitudes, which explained the variability. This implies that for 2005, the TOMS measurements are not completely reliable, except between the -50° and -15° latitude band in the southern hemisphere and between +15° and +50° latitude band in the northern hemisphere. In the case of OMI-OMPS, we observe that between 2011 and 2016 the measurements of both satellite systems are reasonably similar with a confidence level higher than 95%. However, in 2017 a band with a width of 20° latitude centered on the equator appeared, in which the significance levels were much less than 0.05, indicating that one of the measurement systems had begun to fail. In 2018, the fault was not only located in the equator, but was also replicated in various bands in the Southern Hemisphere. We interpret this as evidence of irreversible failure in one of the measurement systems.
