In general, female fitness is greatly increased in gift-giving insects. In katydids, this nuptial gift consists of a gelatinous mass produced by accessory glands： the spermato- phylax, which is attached to the ampulla. During mating, males of the neotropical katydid Conocephalus ictus transfer a spermatophylax that is ingested by the females. Fecundity, egg-laying rate and longevity were higher in females that consumed the spermatophylax than in those that did not. Also, female receptivity turned off after mating. Females actively rejected other males by hitting them with their forelegs and moving away. Their refractory period lasted as long as 17 d. Only a few females accepted a 2nd mating and died a few days later. In C. ictus, spermatophylax consumption can be beneficial for both males and females. On one hand, the compounds in the spermatophylax or the ejaculate could prevent or delay females from copulating with rivals, thus avoiding sperm competition. On the other hand, such compounds can improve the females＇ opportunity to increase their lifespan and fecundity. Moreover, a rise in egg-laying rate may lower the risk of female prereproductive death caused by rapid oviposition. In any case, the boost in female egg laying might also be beneficial for males because their number of offspring increases.

The effect of the consolidation process on the morphodynamics and fine sediment dynamics of the Río de la Plata estuary is explored through a circulation-wave-sediment transport model. The consolidation model is calibrated based on settling column experimental data. Different simulations are done in order to initialize the mud layer distribution and to investigate the impact of different erosion parameter assumptions on the modeled sediment dynamics. Finally a two-year simulation is done with and without the consolidation process and realistic hydrodynamic forcings. Considering the consolidation process, the model correctly reproduces measured vertical density profiles in the Montevideo Bay access channel. The simulated suspended sediment dynamics behavior in Montevideo Bay with the consolidation process provides a more realistic deposition pattern in regard to the dredging activities.

Pulsed electric field (PEF) processing involves the application of pulses of voltage for less than one second to fluid foods placed between two electrodes. Lactobacillus acidophilus is an important probiotic bacterium used for the production of fermented dairy products. Acid tolerance is an important probiotic characteristic. The influence of PEF on acid tolerance of Lactobacillus acidophilus is not known. Objective of this study was to elucidate the influence of certain PEF conditions on the acid tolerance of Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-K. Freshly thawed Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-K was suspended in sterile peptone 0.1% w/v distilled water and treated in a pilot plant PEF system. The treatments were pulse width (3, 6 and 9 μs), pulse period (10,000;20,000 and 30,000 μs) and voltage (5, 15 and 25 kV/cm). Control was run through PEF system at 60 mL/min without receiving any pulsed electric field condition. Data were analyzed using the PROC GLM of the Statistical Analysis Systems (SAS). Differences of least square means were used to determine significant differences at P Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-K lowered by increasing pulse widths and voltages but lowering pulse periods.

Lactobacillus acidophilus has several health benefits and is used as an adjunct bacterium in the manufacture of cultured dairy foods. Bile tolerance is an important probiotic characteristic. Pulsed electric field (PEF) processing is non-thermal, hurdle technology which comprises of passing fluid foods between two electrodes and subjecting them to pulses of voltage for less than one second. Whether certain mild PEF conditions can enhance bile tolerance of Lactobacillus acidophilus is not known. The objective was to study the influence of certain PEF conditions on the, bile tolerance of Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-K. Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-K suspended in sterile peptone 0.1% w/v distilled water was treated with pulse widths of 3, 6 and 9 μs, pulse periods of 10,000;20,000 and 30,000 μs and electric field strengths of 5, 15 and 25 kV/cm. The control did not receive any pulsed electric field condition. Bile tolerance was determined hourly for 16 hours. PROC GLM of the Statistical Analysis Systems (SAS) was used for data analysis. Significant differences were determined at P p p p Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-K subjected to 5 kV/cm were signifycantly the highest while the bile tolerance when subjected to 25 kV/cm was significantly the lowest.

This study had the purpose of testingtwo methods for teaching grammar in Englishasa Foreign Language(EFL)class:the deductive and inductive approaches in terms of effectiveness and *** research was conducted in a public high school in *** students enrolled in the second year of senior high school *** in-service teacher taught the EFL classes during the process of intervention(10 weeks),and two EFL teachers observed all of these classes and recorded the information by filling in observation *** students were administered grammar pretests and post-tests in order to assess their grammar *** results of the tests showed a significant difference in the scores in favor of the inductive *** the statistical analysis of the data obtained from the tests and observation sheets,we concluded that the inductive approach is more effective for teaching grammar in the EFL classroom in terms of instruction and rapport.

The Puyango River Basin covers approximately an area of 4400 km2, it is located in Southern of Ecuador, with Calera and Amarillo rivers as tributaries. In this region, one of the main activities is small scale gold and silver mining. Currently there are 110 processing plants on the bank of Calera and Amarillo rivers, causing a significant degradation of natural resources. A seasonal comparison of metal concentrations in surface water, sediments and particulate matter from the Puyango River and its effluents is made. It was done a differentiation between natural contaminations with the anthropogenic one generated by mining activity. Samples were taken during dry season (2004) and rainy season (2006), and analyzed physicochemical parameters, anions and cations and the concentrations of heavy metals. The results show a clear influence of gold mining in Puyango River contamination, starting with its tributaries, Calera and Amarillo rivers, which have the highest concentrations of heavy metals from the basin, corresponding with the location of the mineral processing plants.
