1,3-Propanediol,traditionally obtained from fossils,has numerous industrial applications,including use in the production of high performance *** microbial production of 1,3-propanediol presents several opportunities,and the final purity grade determines its price and commercial *** development of novel separation technology could improve the economic viability of the bioproduction of 1,***,we investigated salting-out extraction as a novel process for 1,3-propanediol recovery from fermentation ***,a screening for the best salt/solvent combination was conducted and then optimized using the response surface *** solvents studied were methanol,ethanol,isopropanol and acetone,and the salts examined were K_2HPO_4,Na_2CO_3,K_2CO_3,(NH_4)_2SO_4,NaHPO_4,K_3PO_4 and C_6H_5NaO_*** optimal extraction system consisted of 34 wt%K_3PO_4,28 wt% ethanol,and 38 wt% fermentation broth containing 23.0 g·l^(-1)1,3-propanediol,which gave the highest partition coefficient of 33 and recovery yield of 97%.The results demonstrated that salting-out extraction was a promising method for 1,3-propanediol recovery from fermentation broth.

Schistosomiasis mansoni is a neglected disease and key public health problem,mainly due to its high prevalence,the scarcity of public policies,and the severity of some clinical *** fibrosis(PPF)is the commonest complication of chronic schistosomiasis mansoni and its diagnosis requires different *** though wedge biopsy of the liver is considered the gold standard,it is not justified in non-surgical patients,and percutaneous liver biopsy may be informative but does not have sufficient *** PPF tests mostly include biological(serum biomarkers or combined scores)or physical assessments(imaging assessment of fibrosis pattern or tissue stiffness).Moreover,imaging techniques,such as ultrasound,computed tomography,magnetic resonance imaging,and elastography are applied not only to support the diagnosis of schistosomiasis,but also to assess and detect signs of portal hypertension and organ damage due to chronic schistosomiasis.A combination between a comprehensive history and physical examination with biomarkers for liver fibrosis and imaging methods seems to offer the best approach for evaluating these *** addition,understanding their strengths and limitations will allow a more accurate interpretation in the clinical context and can lead to greater accuracy in estimating the degree of fibrosis in patients with Schistosomiasis mansoni(***)*** review will discuss the different noninvasive methods that are currently available for the evaluation of PPF in *** infection,and their application,advantages,and limitations in clinical practice.

Aims Among terrestrial ecosystems,coastal sandy dunes are particularly prone to alien plant *** studies related the invasion of dune habitats to anthropic causes,but less is known about the role of soil properties and plant traits in plant *** this study,we tested the relationships between soil features and alien plant invasion in dune systems,focusing on the interplay between soil nutrients,soil salinity and plant functional *** Study sites were sandy barrier islands of the Marano and Grado lagoon(northern Adriatic Sea).One hundred plots(4 m×4 m)were selected within 10 areas according to the main habitats occurring along the ecological gradient of dune system(foredune,backdune and saltmarsh).In each plot,we recorded all plant species occurrence and abundance and we collected a soil *** each soil sample,soil texture,conductivity(as proxy of soil salinity),organic carbon and nitrogen content were analyzed and related to the species number and cover of native and alien *** of main reproductive and vegetative functional traits among habitats was also analyzed for both alien and native *** Findings Soil properties were strongly related to overall plant diversity,by differently affecting alien and native species *** backdune,the most invaded habitat,a high soil conductivity limited the number of alien species,whereas the content of soil organic carbon increased along with alien plant abundance,suggesting also the occurrence of potential feedback processes between plant invasion and *** found a significant convergence between native and alien plant functional trait spectra only in backdune habitat,where environmental conditions ameliorate and plant competition *** findings suggest that in harsh conditions only native specialized plants can thrive while at intermediate conditions,soil properties gradient acts in synergy with plant traits to curb/facilitate alien plant richness.

AIM:To evaluate the main factors associated with mortality in patients undergoing surgery for perforated peptic ulcer referred to an academic department of general surgery in a large southern Italian city. METHODS:One hundred and forty-nine consecutive patients (M:F ratio=110:39,mean age 52 yrs,range 16-95) with peptic ulcer disease were investigated for clinical history (including age,sex,previous history of peptic ulcer,associated diseases,delayed abdominal surgery,ulcer site,operation type,shock on admission,postoperative general complications, and intra-abdominal and/or wound infections),serum analyses and radiological findings. RESUlTS:The overall mortality rate was 4.0%.Among all factors,an age above 65 years,one or more associated diseases,delayed abdominal surgery,shock on admission, postoperative abdominal complications and/or wound infections,were significantly associated (x^2) with increased mortality in patients undergoing surgery (0.0001lUSION:Factors such as concomitant diseases,shock on admission,delayed surgery,and postoperative abdominal and wound infections are significantly associated with fatal outcomes and need careful evaluation within the general workup of patients admitted for perforated peptic ulcer.

BACKGROUND(-)-Fenchone is a bicyclic monoterpene present in essential oils of plant species,such as Foeniculum vulgare and Peumus boldus,used to treatment of gastrointestinal *** studies report its anti-inflammatory,antioxidant,and antinociceptive *** To investigate antidiarrheal activity related to gastrointestinal motility,intestinal secretion and antimicrobial *** A castor oil-induced diarrhea model was used to evaluate antidiarrheal *** transit and gastric emptying protocols were used to assess a possible antimotility *** receptors,presynaptic α2-adrenergic and tissue adrenergic receptors,KATP channels,nitric oxide were investigated to uncover antimotility mechanisms of action and castor oil-induced enteropooling to elucidate antisecretory *** antimicrobial activity was evaluated in the minimum inhibitory concentration model,the fractional inhibitory concentration index using the(-)-fenchone association method with standard antifungal ***(-)-Fenchone(75,150 and 300 mg/kg)showed antidiarrheal activity,with a significant decrease in the evacuation *** activity is possibly related to a percentage of reduced intestinal transit(75,150 and 300 mg/kg).The antimotility effect of(-)-fenchone decreased in the presence of pilocarpine,yohimbine,propranolol,l-NG-nitroarginine methyl ester or *** the enteropooling model,no reduction in intestinal fluid weight was observed.(-)-Fenchone did not show antibacterial activity;on the other hand,inhibits the growth of strains of fungi with a minimum fungicide concentration of 32μg/***,when it was associated with amphotericin B,no synergism was *** The antidiarrheal effect of(-)-fenchone in this study involves antimotility effect and not involve antisecretory mechanisms.(-)-Fenchone presents antifungal activity;however,it did not show antibacterial activity.

Unraveling oral psoriasis and its relationship with geographic tongue: A literature review

Differentiating between oral psoriasis and geographic tongue is difficult and controversial because some patients with geographic tongue do not necessarily have psoriasis. Furthermore, the number of clinical studies, reporting histopathological and genetic evidence for the definitive diagnosis of oral psoriasis, is limited. The aim of this literature review was to obtain data for supporting the diagnosis of oral psoriasis with particular emphasis on the relationship between psoriasis and geographic tongue. Based on the current data, it can be concluded that geographic tongue is the most common oral lesion in psoriasis, and histopathological, immunohistochemical, and genetic similarities have been observed between the two diseases. This review also emphasizes the importance of conducting oral examinations in patients with psoriasis and skin examinations in patients with geographic tongue.

Experimental Design as a Tool for the Development of Citric Acid Production by Yarrowia lipolytica Using Glycerol as a Feedstock

Due to the scarcity of fossil fuels in the world, there is increasing interest in the commercial production of biodiesel, which leads to obtaining large amounts of glycerol as a byproduct. If not disposed of properly, glycerol can generate environmental impact. One of the promises, the application of the crude glycerol is the production of citric acid by microbial fermentation. Citric acid is industrially produced by a submerged fermentation process with Aspergillus niger, using sucrose as carbon source, but due to increased demand for citric acid, alternative processes using renewable sources or waste materials as substrates and the cultivation of yeast strains are being studied. The aim of the study was to determine the best culture condition for maximum citric acid synthesis and lower isocitric acid production from crude glycerol through experimental design tool. For this purpose, the yeast strain Yarrowia lipolytica IMUFRJ-50682 was cultivated in nitrogen-limited glycerol-based media. Therefore, glycerol and yeast extract concentrations and agitation speed were evaluated as independent variables. With pure glycerol, the highest citric acid production achieved was 16.5 g/l with an isocitric acid production of 7.7% （in relation to citric acid）. With crude glycerol, citric acid production reduced to 6.7 g/l because of higher biomass yield. Therefore, an increase in the initial carbon to nitrogen molar ratio from 714 to 1,561 was necessary to increase citric acid production to 9.2 g/l, reducing isocitric acid production and to achieve a yield of 0.41 g of citric acid per glycerol consumed. In this condition, less nitrogen source was used, reducing production costs.
