Despite scientific advances in the Oncology field,cancer remains a leading cause of death *** and cellular heterogeneity of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma(HNsCC)is a significant contributor to the unpredictability of the clinical response and failure in cancer *** stem cells(CsCs)are recognized as a subpopulation of tumor cells that can drive and maintain tumorigenesis and metastasis,leading to poor prognosis in different types of *** exhibit a high level of plasticity,quickly adapting to the tumor microenvironment changes,and are intrinsically resistant to current chemo and *** mechanisms of CsC-mediated therapy resistance are not fully ***,they include different strategies used by CsCs to overcome challenges imposed by treatment,such as activation of DNA repair system,anti-apoptotic mechanisms,acquisition of quiescent state and Epithelial-mesenchymal transition,increased drug efflux capacity,hypoxic environment,protection by the CsC niche,overexpression of stemness related genes,and immune *** elimination of CsCs seems to be the main target for achieving tumor control and improving overall survival for cancer *** review will focus on the multi-factorial mechanisms by which CsCs are resistant to radiotherapy and chemotherapy in HNsCC,supporting the use of possible strategies to overcome therapy failure.

Antimicrobial Efficacy of Curcumin Formulations byPhotodynamic Therapy

URTI （upper respiratory tract infections） are caused by acute, chronic or recurrent infections including pharyngitis andtonsillitis. The etiologic agents involved are bacteria, virus, and fungi. The standard treatment for bacterial infections is the use ofantibiotics. The antibiotic resistance, side effects of drugs and URTI complications indicate the importance of new therapies. PDT（photodynamic therapy） is a treatment option with a fast onset of action, low side effects, and easy administration of Ps（photosensitizer） based on this study. The main aim of this study was to develop a new modality for the treatment of infectiouspharyngotonsillitis by photodynamic therapy. In addition, this study aims to evaluate components of the therapy as the Ps, curcumin,in two formulations and irradiation conditions in the effectiveness of treatment. The procedure consists of two steps： oraladministration of CFs （curcumin formulations） containing a Ps and illumination （450 nm and 0-60 J/cm2）. Bacterial isolates wereobtained from patients in a routine clinical pratice. The new methodology has been developed from the principle ofPI （photodynamicinactivation）. The strain identification number of colony forming units determined the efficacy of PI using each component, lightingand Ps. The use of curcumin formulations in PI presented microbial reduction of 5 log.

A Dynamic Planner as a sustainable Planning Way： A Bridge between the Law, Technical Knowledge and the Local Population

The social and environmental demands in Brazilian cities are usually neglected by the local municipal powers due to a heavy bias toward speculative capital. The main issue is a public administration that benefits the private initiative instead of popular and environmental values and needs. Despite federal efforts at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21 st century, water resources and urban reform policies are not able to ensure a connection between these two issues in the urban environment. Aiming at showing a new approach of citizenship and environmental rights in a developing country, Bauru, a Brazilian city located in the state of s^o Paulo, was used as a study case. In this scenario, the research is based on the action research method, in which a dynamic profile of the researchers was adopted in order to solidify environmental and social issues in the urban planning process. This article shows the advantages in using the river basin as an urban planning territory in the city master plan, and providing continuous technique support to the citizen, through the role played by the researcher-planner between government and population, as a way to possibly reach social and environmental interests. The territorial perception of the river basin by citizens brings effective environmental and social results.

Chondrogenic potential of mesenchymal stem cells from horses using a magnetic 3D cell culture system

Computed tomography-guided percutaneous core needle biopsy in pancreatic tumor diagnosis

AIM: To evaluate the techniques, results, and complications related to computed tomography(CT)-guided percutaneous core needle biopsies of solid pancreatic ***: CT-guided percutaneous biopsies of solid pancreatic lesions performed at a cancer reference center between January 2012 and september 2013 were retrospectively analyzed. Biopsy material was collected with a 16-20 G Tru-Core needle(10-15 cm; Angiotech, Vancouver, CA) using a coaxial system and automatic biopsy gun. When direct access to the lesion was not possible, indirect(transgastric or transhepatic) access or hydrodissection and/or pneumodissection maneuvers were used. Characteristics of the patients, lesions, procedures, and histologic results were recorded using a standardized form. REsULTs: A total of 103 procedures included in the study were performed on patients with a mean age of 64.8 year(range: 39-94 year). The mean size of the pancreatic lesions was 45.5 mm(range: 15-195 mm). Most(75/103, 72.8%) procedures were performed via direct access, though hydrodissection and/or pneumodissection were used in 22.2%(23/103) of cases and indirect transhepatic or transgastric access was used in 4.8%(5/103) of cases. Histologic analysis was performed on all biopsies, and diagnoses were conclusive in 98.1%(101/103) of cases, confirming3.9%(4/103) of tumors were benign and 94.2%(97/103) were malignant; results were atypical in 1.9%(2/103) of cases, requiring a repeat biopsy to diagnose a neuroendocrine tumor, and surgical resection to confirm a primary adenocarcinoma. Only mild/moderate complications were observed in 9/103 patients(8.7%),and they were more commonly associated with biopsies of lesions located in the head/uncinate process(n =8), than of those located in the body/tail(n = 1) of the pancreas, but this difference was not ***: CT-guided biopsy of a pancreatic lesion is a safe procedure with a high success rate, and is an excellent option for minimally invasive diagnosis.

Williams-Beuren syndrome （WBs） is a genetic disease characterized by distinct facial features, short stature, hypotonia, mental retardation, overfriendly and hyper-social behavior, congenital heart disease, infantile hypercalcemia, arterial hypertension and other variable clinical manifestations in organs and systems such as the kidneys, eyes, gastrointestinal and osteoarticular systems （Morris and Mervis, 2000）. This mental retardation syndrome occurs in 1/20,000 live births （Meyer- Lindenberg et al., 2006）. It is caused by a 1.55-1.84 Mb microdeletion in 7q 11.23, a region containing approximately 28 genes. Depending on the genes deleted, the phenotypes of WBs patients range from isolated supravalvular aortic stenosis （sVAs） to full expression of the WBs characteristics. Most cases are sooradic （Ewart et al.. 1993： Perez Jurado et al.. 1996）.

A Promising strategy for the Treatment of Onychomycosis with Curcumin and Photodynamic Therapy

Onychomycosis is a disease of high incidence in the nail plate and responsible for approximately half of the cases of nail infections. Conventionally, dermatologists prescribe antibiotics and antifungals for long periods for its treatment. The high incidence of this type of infection and the increase of microbial strains resistant to the available drugs have justified the importance of the development of new technologies and treatments. This paper presents the photodynamic therapy as an alternative treatment of onychomycosis. New strategies for the use of curcumin as a photosensitizer and its therapeutic response were investigated in different formulations （gel and emulsion）. Photodynamic therapy is a promising technique by which microorganisms are eliminated by a photosensitizing compound, light and oxygen. It was evaluated in two patients who had developed lesions in the fmgernails caused by onychomycosis for approximately 10 years. The lesions were treated by photodynamic therapy with curcumin. The therapeutic efficacy was observed after a maximum of six photodynamic therapy sessions without any other adjuvant therapy. Curcumin has become more promising than the therapeutic standard as it is a natural and versatible drug for incorporation in different formulations, at low cost and low probability of side effects.

Characterization of an Early Berry Development Grapevine somatic Variant (Vitis labrusca L. cv. Isabel Precoce)

Over the past 10 years significant advances have been made towards the description of genetics and molecular mechanisms controlling grapevine berry growth. Regardless of this, many aspects of early fruit morphogenesis and its development control remain to be elucidated. In an attempt to understand gene expression patterns associated with the berry growth development, the contrasting phenotype between the cv. Isabel (Vitis labrusca L.) and its early berry development mutant “Isabel Precoce” has been explored by a candidate gene approach. “Isabel Precoce” (Vitis labrusca L.) was confirmed as an EDV (Essentially Derived Variety) of Isabel, with a 30-35-day reduction in the berry growth phase when compared to the wild type and thus, it constitutes an informative model to investigate many aspects of fruit growth and development. Phenotypic analysis showed that “Isabel Precoce” develops fruits that are smaller in diameter and volume despite of following similar development kinetics. The expression of many genes associated with plant growth and development (MIKCC-type MADs box genes), sugar transport and with the control of flavonoid biosynthetic pathway have been evaluated. The majority of the genes presented a remarkably similar transcription profile. However, a higher induction of transcript accumulation for some genes has been observed in the “Isabel Precoce” genetic background.
