Digital intubation was discovered as one of the first methods to face a difficult airway without direct laryngoscopy. From the very beginning, this technique has been surrounded by much controversy, mainly because it required to be performed by an expert. Nowadays, it remains a useful technique when treating patients with difficult airways, so it is of utmost importance all personnel involved with airway management must know and perfect this technique when scenarios where conventional laryngoscopy or rescue devices for difficult airway are not available or contraindicated. The present work’s main objective is to suggest digital intubation as a safe and effective technique for the management of patients with difficult airways when there are no other devices available. The authors present a successful case of digital intubation on a patient with a difficult airway, demonstrating this technique is useful when performed by expert practitioners and when there is no other equipment available.

Contextualization: Emptying the bladder is a challenging problem for the urological community. Intermittent catheterization is the most widely used method to restore bladder emptying mechanism. However, this procedure can have a negative impact on self-image and result in a decline in the quality of life of patients. In this context, the use of a bladder emptying device (SVCATH3D) proposes to be effective and have a positive impact on the quality of life of different patients. Objective: The objective of the study was to evaluate the functionality of a new device for both intermittent and controlled emptying of the bladder in both sexes and ages. materials and methods: A randomized clinical trial was conducted with 251 patients, with different bladder problems, from march 2013 to January 2023. After randomization, the patients were divided into two groups: Group I (SVCATH3D) and Group II (Clean Intermittent Catheterization). The primary outcome was defined as the impact on quality of life. Data on episodes of urinary tract infection, adverse effects, number of diaper use and treatment costs were analyzed. Results: The apposition of the SVCATH3D was performed on an outpatient basis, with no complications during the procedures. The patients were followed up for 10 years. There was a significant improvement in quality of life when comparing the moments before and after the use of SVCATH3D (p Conclusion: The study using SVCATH3D showed promising results in relation to functionality, showing improvement in quality of life with a reduction in episodes of urinary infection and amount of diapers/day. This allows us to conclude that SVCATH3D can represent an important step in the treatment of patients suffering from various bladder problems both incontinence and affecting emptying mechanism.

Pulmonary function studies in obese individuals have alerted the pathophysiological changes due to weight gain. However, these changes are not fully explained yet. Objective: To evaluate and analyze the pulmonary function of obese adults in the city of manaus (Am, Brazil) and to correlate the parameters of spirometry with weight and BmI. method: A descriptive cross-sectional study, in which pulmonary function of 22 adults with grade III obesity was evaluated pre and post bronchodilator administration, performed at the Adriano Jorge Hospital Foundation—FHAJ. Results: Of the 22 patients evaluated, 6 were male and 16 were female;mean age was 37.1 ± 7.4 years, with a weight of 134.2 ± 28.6 kg and a BmI of 51.1 ± 9.4 kg/m2, corresponding to grade III obesity. Spirometry showed a reduction in values obtained from Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), Forced Expiratory Volume in the first second (FEV1) and Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) in relation to those predicted, with 23% of restrictive disorders. There were negative correlations between BmI and PEF, weight and FVC, weight and PEF. The P value for correlation of weight and FEV1 is not statistically significant. Conclusion: Restrictive and obstructive disorders are prevalent in the population with grade III obesity. Correlations between pulmonary function and BmI/weight were negative for this specific population.

Background: Experimental studies have shown that cyclo-oxygenase-2 (Cox2) is related to the development and progression of tumors, since this enzyme is induced and expressed by cells such as macrophages, osteoblasts, “activated” endothelial cells, and tumor cells. The activity in tumors includes proliferation, cell transformation, tumor growth, invasion and metastasis and may play an important role in carcinogenesis of the canine osteosarcoma, since it has high expression in tissue fragments. The combination of selective Cox2 inhibitors and other treatment modalities is the basis for a new anti-cancer therapy strategy. This in vitro study exposed primary cells of five different canine osteosarcoma cultures to selective Cox2 inhibitor at increasing concentrations and times. Results: For Cox2 negative cultures, despite the absence of differences, greater sensitivity of cells to treatment was observed. For Cox2 positive cultures, a higher number of necrotic cells were observed (P ≤ 0.05), when compared with negative cultures. For exposure times with Celecoxib doses, no difference (P > 0.05) was found between the three times analyzed for living, apoptotic and apoptotic/necrotic cells. There are similarities in the values of 24 h and 48 h, with slight reduction of living cells, increasing those undergoing apoptosis and apoptosis/necrosis. There was significance for necrosis (P ≤ 0.05). In 72 hours, a significant difference was observed between the other two previous values (P ≤ 0.05). It was found for the group of 100 μmL-1, that there was a numerically greater signaling for apoptosis and lower (P = 0.08) for necrosis, and this point was the onset of the pharmacodynamic phenomenon, with drop in the values for living cells and increased number of necrotic cells, with a tendency (P = 0.08) for reducing the percentage of necrotic cells for the group of 100 μmL-1 when compared to that of 10 μmL-1. AIm:To evaluate the suitability of reference genes in gastric tissue samples and cell ***:The suitability of genes ACTB,B2m,GAPDH,RPL29,and 18S rRNA was assessed in21 matched pairs of neoplastic and adjacent nonneoplastic gastric tissues from patients with gastric adenocarcinoma,27 normal gastric tissues from patients without cancer,and 4 cell lines using reverse transcription quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction(RT-qPCR).The ranking of the best single and combination of reference genes was determined by NormFinder,geNorm,BestKeeper,and *** addition,GenEx software was used to determine the optimal number of reference *** validate the results,the mRNA expression of a target gene,DNmT1,was quantified using the different reference gene combinations suggested by the various software packages for ***:ACTB was the best reference gene for all gastric tissues,cell lines and all gastric tissues plus cell ***+B2m or ACTB+B2m was the best combination of reference genes for all the gastric *** the other hand,ACTB+B2m was the best combination for all the cell lines tested and was also the best combination for analyses involving all the gastric tissues plus cell *** to the GenEx software,2 or 3 genes were the optimal number of references genes for all the gastric *** relative quantification of DNmT1 showed similar patterns when normalized by each combination of reference *** level of expression of DNmT1 in neoplastic,adjacent non-neoplastic and normal gastric tissues did not differ when these samples were normalized using GAPDH+B2m(P=0.32),ACTB+B2m(P=0.61),or GAPDH+B2m+ACTB(P=0.44).CONCLUSION:GAPDH+B2m or ACTB+B2m is the best combination of reference gene for all the gastric tissues,and ACTB+B2m is the best combination for the cell lines tested.

Antimicrobial Activity of Essential Oil of <i>Zingiber officinale</i>Roscoe (Zingiberaceae)

Zingiber officinale, commonly known as ginger, is a species native of tropical Asia. It is grown and used in tropical countries of America, including mexico, where it is used for the treatment of throat infections. The aim of this study was to determine the chemical composition of essential oil of Z. officinale rhizome and evaluate their antimicrobial activity. The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation, and the chemical composition of the oil was determined by GC-mS. To determine the antimicrobial activity diffusion, agar dilution and radial growth inhibition methods were employed. microbial growth curves were performed on the strains most susceptible. It was identified 28 compounds in the essential oil, the most abundant were eudesmol (8.19%), γ-terpinene (7.88 %), a-curcumene (7.28%), alloaromadendrene (6.56%), zingiberene (6.06 %), α-pinene (5.76 %), δ-cadinene (3.84%), elemol (3.39%), farnesal (3.45%), E-β-farnesene (3.57%), neril acetate (2.8%) and β-myrcene (2.94%). In antimicrobial activity, the essential oil inhibited the growth of 15 bacterial strains, 3 of yeast fungi and 4 of mycelia fungi. The most susceptible strains were S. aureus FES-I (mIC = 0.25 mg/mL) S. epidemidis FES-C (mIC = 0.5 mg/mL), E. faecalis ATCC 14506 (mIC = 1.0 mg/mL), C. tropicalis (CmI = 0.125 mg/mL) and T. mentagrophytes (CF50 = 0.08 mg/mL). In the microbial growth curves the essential oil showed bactericidal effect on S. aureus FES-I and S. marcescens ATCC 14756 from the first hour of exposure of the strains to oil, eliminating 99.9% of CFU in concentrations of 0.5 and 0.75 mg/mL respectively. The results validate the medicinal use of Z. officinale in the treatment of diseases of possible infectious origin.
