In spite of advances in surgical care and rehabilitation, the consequences of spinal cord injury （SCI） are still challenging. Several experimental therapeutic strategies have been studied in the SCI field, and recent advances have led to the development of therapies that may act on the inhibitory microenvironment. Assorted lineages of stem cells are considered a good treatment for SCI. This study investigated the effect of systemic transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells （MSCs） in a compressive SCI model. Here we present results of the intraperitoneal route, which has not been used previously for MSC administration after compressive SCI. We used adult female C57BL/6 mice that underwent laminectomy at the T9 level, followed by spinal cord compression for 1 minute with a 30-g vascular clip. The animals were divided into five groups： sham （anesthesia and laminectomy but without compression injury induction）, MSC i.p. （intraperitoneal injection of 8×10^5 MSCs in 500 μL of DMEM at 7 days after SCI）, MSC i.v. （intravenous injection of 8 × 10^5 MSCs in 500μL of DMEM at 7 days after SCI）, DMEM i.p. （intraperitoneal injection of 500μL of DMEM at 7 days after SCI）, DMEM i.v. （intravenous injection of 500 μL of DMEM at 7 days after SCI）. The effects of MSCs transplantation in white matter sparing were analyzed by luxol fast blue staining. The number of preserved fibers was counted in semithin sections stained with toluidine blue and the presence of trophic factors was analyzed by immunohistochemistry. In addition, we analyzed the locomotor performance with Basso Mouse Scale and Global Mobility Test. Our results showed white matter preservation and a larger number of preserved fibers in the MSC groups than in the DMEM groups. Furthermore, the MSC groups had higher levels of trophic factors （brain-derived neurotrophic factor, nerve growth factor, neurotrophin-3 and neurotrophin-4） in the spinal cord and improved locomotor performance. Suicide Attempts in a General Hospital: A case-Control

Objective: This study aims is to conduct a comparative analysis of the clinical and sociodemographic profiles of individuals referred to Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry (CLP) at a tertiary general hospital, specifically focusing on those seeking assistance due to suicide attempts (TS) versus CLP requests for other reasons (non-TS) between the years 2010 and 2020. Additionally, we aim to assess factors associated with suicide attempts. Method: This retrospective controlled study involves a thorough examination of medical records encompassing 3913 patients who received CLP services at the Hospital de Base (HB) and the Children and Maternity Hospital (HCM) of São José do Rio Preto Medical School Foundation (Funfarme) from June 2010 to June 2020. The patient cohort is categorized into two groups: those with requests for SA (n = 677) and those with requests for other reasons. Results: In the SA group, as opposed to the non SA group, statistically significant differences were observed for gender (predominantly female), employment status (employed), marital status (single), and age (younger). Notably, a higher prevalence of psychiatric antecedents (88.7%, n = 555 vs. 73.6% n = 2018) was found in the SA group, indicating a significant association. The frequency of SA requests remained stable over the years. Among the SA group, mood disorders were the most prevalent (39%, n = 372), followed by disorders related to substance use (21.2%, n = 202), and personality disorders (16%, n = 152). A history of previous suicide attempts emerged as a crucial factor for the recurrence of SA (p-value ≤ 0.001). Exogenous intoxication emerged as the most frequently employed method in attempts (79.6%, n = 539), particularly prevalent among patients diagnosed with mood disorders (41%, n = 314). The Representation(s) of “The Other”in Passage to India by David Lean

This work presents a critical approach to Passage to India, a film directed by David Lean (1984), based on the novel written by Edward Morgan Foster in 1924, focusing attention on micro representations of Indian society under British imperial power. To structure the work, the ideas of two prominent thinkers whose critical approaches are grounded on the concept of Representation and its implication in relation to perceptions of the “Other” were we selected as theoretical framework, namely Herrieta Lidchi and Stuart Hall. In this way, the work aims at highlighting the power of visual images, represented by the film, in the construction of ethnocentric images created by Imperial power(s) and their importance for the development of critical thinking in relation to residual marks of such representations in post-colonial era.

Synergistic Antioxidant Activity in Brazilian Propolis Extract Blends: An in Vitro Study

A simplex-lattice mixture design with response surface methodology was used to evaluate in vitro synergistic antioxidant activity of red, green, and brown Brazilian propolis extract blends. The in vitro antioxidant capacity of propolis extract blends was measured using the fluorine method of oxygen radical absorption capacity assay (ORAC assay). A synergistic antioxidant interaction was identified between green and brown propolis extracts, and the predictive model accused a binary mixture composed of 59% green and 41% brown propolis extracts with increased antioxidant activity of about 54%. Our findings suggest a possible reduction in the dosages of these natural antioxidants in their various potential applications, including health and food, thereby proving to be a highly promising alternative for the rational use and valorization of propolis.

Glyphosate is a herbicide that has been widely used worldwide and is used in agricultural areas to control weeds and unwanted *** sensors developed from different nanomaterials have high efficiency,excellent cost-benefit,and fast analysis time for detecting traces of environmental *** study aimed to produce an electrochemical sensor with disposable screen-printed electrodes based on carbon black modified with niobium nanoparticles to determine glyphosate in aqueous *** morphology,structure and electrochemical performance of the sensor were characterized by scanning electron microscopy,energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy,X-ray diffraction and cyclic *** pulse voltammetry in BR buffer solution at pH 5.0 allowed the generation of a method to quantify glyphosate concentration in a linear range of 5.90-172.30μmol/L(1.00-29.13μg/mL),with a limit of detection calculated at 3.07μmol/L(0.52μg/mL).The method efficiently quantified glyphosate in real water samples and showed no interference from K^(+),Na^(+),ca^(2+),Mg^(2+)ions or thiamethoxam,imidacloprid and carbendazim pesticides.

Objective: To evaluate anti-candida and anti-Cryptococcus activities of 15 nonalkaloidal compounds from Pterogyne nitens Tulasne(Leguminosae), a South American medicinal ***: Compounds were submitted to antifungal assays, using microdilution method described by Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute document, with minor modifications. Five species of candida and two species of Cryptococcus, including clinical isolates were screened. Antifungal activity was expressed by minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC). Amphotericin B and fluconazole were used as standard antifungal ***: Among tested compounds, six substances presented fungal growth inhibition(MIC candida glabrata ATCC 90030, Cryptococcus gattii 118 and fluconazole-resistant clinical isolate of Cryptococcus neoformans var. grubii. Pedalin(2) and nitensoside B(3), two glycosylated flavone derivatives, were active against Cryptococcus neoformans ATCC 90012(MIC = 7.80 mg/m L).Conclusions: Flavone derivatives from Pterogyne nitens can serve as prototypes for the design and development of innovative anti-candida and anti-Cryptococcus hits.
