Critical bone defects are considered one of the major clinical challenges in reconstructive bone *** combination of 3D printed conductive scaffolds and exogenous electrical stimulation(Es)is a potential favorable approach for bone tissue *** this study,3D conductive scaffolds made with biocompatible and biodegradable polycaprolactone(PCL)and multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs)were produced using the extrusion-based additive manufacturing to treat large calvary bone defects in *** results show that the use of PCL/MWCNTs scaffolds and Es contributes to thicker and increased bone tissue formation within the bone *** and mineralization are also significantly promoted using high concentration of MWCNTs(3 wt%)and ***,scaffolds favor the tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase(TRAP)positive cell formation,while the addition of MWCNTs seems to inhibit the osteoclastogenesis but present limited effects on the osteoclast functionalities(receptor activator of nuclear factor κβ ligand(RANKL)and osteoprotegerin(OPG)expressions).The use of Es promotes the osteoclastogenesis and RANKL expressions,showing a dominant effect in the bone remodeling *** results indicate that the combination of 3D printed conductive PCL/MWCNTs scaffold and Es is a promising strategy to treat critical bone defects and provide a cue to establish an optimal protocol to use conductive scaffolds and Es for bone tissue engineering.

The scale of forest and landscape restoration is expected to increase during the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and its contribution to the provision of critical ecosystem services to *** models of forest restoration may improve ecosystem services,including soil organic carbon(sOC)storage.A review was carried out to access:(1)the variability of sOC storage between worldwide forest restoration models and,(2)the effects of climate,soil class,soil texture,and vegetation type on sOC *** reviewed 119 primary studies with information on sOC and soil texture for different forest restoration *** restoration models were grouped into four categories:natural regeneration,monocultures,agroforestry,and mixed *** data was extracted from these four restoration models,other land uses(cropland,bare land,grassland,and natural forest),climate regimes,and soil *** sOC storage in the forest restoration models and other land uses at a global scale ranged between 0.1 to 514 Mg ha^(-1).The overall mean value for sOC storage was higher for natural regeneration(112 Mg ha^(-1)),followed by agroforestry(74 Mg ha^(-1)),mixed forest(73 Mg ha^(-1)),and monocultures(68 Mg ha^(-1)).However,the average sOC storage was similar among the four restoration models in the moist warm climate *** sOC storage mean value in the moist cool zone was 23%higher than the dry cool zone(81 and 62 Mg ha^(-1),respectively),and 50%higher for the moist warm zone when compared to the dry warm climatic zone(74 and 38 Mg ha^(-1),respectively).The sOC storage of the restoration models was positively related to soil depth(0.59;pstand age(0.17;ps of sOC storage were 26,66,and 139 Mg ha^(-1) at zero-10,zero-30,and zero-100 cm depths,*** addition,sandy soils showed smaller mean values of sOC storage than medium to clay soils,especially in deeper soil ***,sOC storage was positively re

Injuries to the spinal cord result in permanent disabilities that limit daily life *** main reasons for these poor outcomes are the limited regenerative capacity of central neurons and the inhibitory milieu that is established upon traumatic *** decades of research,there is still no efficient treatment for spinal cord *** strategies are tested in preclinical studies that focus on ameliorating the functional outcomes after spinal cord *** these,molecular compounds are currently being used for neurological recovery,with promising *** molecules target the axon collapsed growth cone,the inhibitory microenvironment,the survival of neurons and glial cells,and the re-establishment of lost *** this review we focused on molecules that are being used,either in preclinical or clinical studies,to treat spinal cord injuries,such as drugs,growth and neurotrophic factors,enzymes,and *** mechanisms of action of these molecules are discussed,considering traumatic spinal cord injury in rodents and humans.

Many plants pollinated by nectar-foraging animals have to maintain a balance between legitimate visitor attraction strategies and mechanisms that minimize illegitimate *** study investigated how floral display and neighboring species composition influences nectar robbing by hummingbirds in the tropical ornithophilous herb Heliconia *** tested the role of inflorescence display,flower abundance,and neighboring species in the reduction of nectar robbing in *** results indicate that nectar robbing hummingbird activity was higher in moderately large inflorescence displays and that the frequency of nectar robbing in *** decreases with increased flower abundance and the presence of neighboring plant *** non-ornithophilous plants decreased the frequency of nectar robbing in *** flowers to a greater extent than ornithophilous *** results suggest that nectar robbing hummingbirds are attracted to similar conditions that attract legitimate visitors and that spatial aggregation and mixed-species displays may represent a mechanism to dilute nectar robbing effects at an individual level.

Current aspects of therapeutic reduction mammaplasty for immediate early breast cancer management: An update

Breast-conservation surgery(BCs) is established as a safe surgical treatment for most patients with early breast cancer. Recently, advances in oncoplastic techniques are capable of preserving the breast form and quality of life. Although most BCs defects can be managed with primary closure, the aesthetic outcome may be unpredictable. Among technical options, therapeutic reduction mammaplasty(TRM) remains a useful procedure since the BCs defect can be repaired and the preoperative appearance can be improved, resulting in more proportional breasts. As a consequence of rich breast tissue vascularization, the greater part of reduction techniques have based their planning on preserving the pedicle of the nipple-areola complex after tumor removal. Reliable circulation and improvement of a conical shape to the breast are commonly described in TRM reconstructions. With an immediate approach, the surgical process is smooth since both procedures can be carried out in one operative setting. Additionally,it permits wider excision of the tumor, with a superior mean volume of the specimen and potentially reduces the incidence of margin involvement. Regardless of the fact that there is no consensus concerning the best TRM technique, the criteria is determined by the surgeon's experience, the extent/location of glandular tissue resection and the size of the defect in relation to the size of the remaining breast. The main advantages of the technique utilized should include reproducibility, low interference with the oncological treatment and long-term results. The success of the procedure depends on patient selection, coordinated planning and careful intra-operative management.

OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the systemic action of electroacupuncture and laserpuncture in the repair of excisional cutaneous injuries on the back of adult female Wistar ***:Ninety animals were divided into three experimental groups:C-control;E-treated with electroacupuncture[acupoints:Feishu(BL13),Geshu(BL17),Zusanli(sT36)];L-treated with laserpuncture(same acupoints)and euthanized on the 7 th,14 th and 21 st days for tissue removal and preparation for histomorphometric and biochemical(dosages,zymography and Western blotting)***:The number of fibroblasts in the E and L groups presented higher values than the C on the14 th and 21 st *** number of granulocytes was lower than C on the 21 st day in groups E and *** total number of newly formed vessels increased on the 21 st day and was higher in both treatments when compared to *** birefringent collagen fibers detected on the 21 st day was lower in groups E and L than group *** glycosaminoglycans and hydroxyproline amount was similar among groups throughout the experimental *** active isoform of matrixmetallo proteinase(MMP)-2 and the latent isoform of MMP-9 did not show any differences among all groups and experimental *** amount of collagenⅠpresented higher values in the L group on the 14 th day and in the E and L groups on the 21 st *** typeⅢcollagen,groups E and L presented values lower than C in all experimental *** amount of transforming growth factor-β1 in the E and L groups showed higher amounts than C on the 7 th day and lower on the 14 th and 21 st *** vascular endothelial growth factor,E and L groups presented similar and lower values than C on the 7 th and 14 th days,respectively,and similar on the 21 st ***:The therapies evaluated in this article stimulated fibroblast proliferation,neoangiogenesis and altered the reorganization of collagen fibers in the repair of excisional injuries in female adult rats.

Can rainfall seasonality trigger soil water repellency in a tropical riparian forest?

Though riparian areas generally have a shallow water table and higher soil moisture compared to up slope areas,climatic seasonality may trigger water repellency in tropical riparian forests,which,if persistent,could negatively affect essential ecosystem functions related to water resources protection such as reduced overland-flow,sediment transport,and nutrient *** objective of this study was to answer the following:can tropical riparian forests develop water repellency?If so,does water repellency affect infiltration on a seasonal basis?For this,water repellency and infiltration were measured in a grid of 72points during a dry and a wet month of a tropical riparian forest with a shallow water table in a region with highly marked climatic *** repellency and infiltration were significantly different between the wet and dry *** repellency affected negatively infiltration in the dry month,its effect in the wet month was *** a result,a higher infiltration capacity was observed over the wet *** research has claimed that the development and persistence of repellency in soils could promote other hydrological processes such as overland *** findings shown here demonstrate that such phenomenon does not persist longer than the dry season.

Cerrado soils are acidic and nutrient-poor,with high content of solubilized Al 3+.Plants growing in these conditions may display adaptations to cope with high aluminum concentrations especially during early developmental *** investigated leaf nutritional status,and photosynthetic and growth characteristics during the initial establishment of Handroanthus impetiginosus(*** Dc.)Mattos,a secondary tree species distributed in the Brazilian *** goal was to understand leaf-level traits related to diff erent aluminum *** plants were cultivated in four diff erent aluminum sulfate concentrations:0,1,2,and 4 mM Al,for 40 *** performed analyses of growth,leaf gas exchange,chloroplast pigment content,and leaf mineral *** observed a linear increase of Al leaf content as a function of Al concentration in the nutrient *** grown in 1 mM Al showed a remarkable increase of K leaf content,net photosynthesis,stomatal conductance,and transpiration,while in 4 mM Al there were reductions of N,P,and K contents,gas exchange characteristics,and *** did not have mechanisms of avoidance,compartmentalization,or resistance to high Al ***,this species showed a hormetic response,with low Al concentrations stimulating and high Al concentrations inhibiting plant responses.
